Hands-on with Skylanders Trap Team Tablet edition

Activision have just announced Skylanders Trap Team Tablet edition and we got to play with it.

CDW Skylanders Trap Team tablet - 5

Children (and some adults) love Skylanders, that’s a fact, but the biggest problem has been needing to be at home with the console to play it. Well all that changes now with the introduction of the tablet edition of Skylanders Trap Team.

It comes in a starter pack that includes a Bluetooth Portal of Power, a controller, Food Fight and Snap Shot, two traps and a tray to keep it all one. The controller and the portal of power connect to the tablet (either an iOS, Android or FireOS device) using the Bluetooth low energy standard, which means longer lasting playtime. Both devices take AAA batteries (the controller takes 2 and the portal takes 3). Pairing the devices to your tablet is simple – just open the game and press the button on the device – simple as that!

CDW Skylanders Trap Team tablet - 12

The controller is stored on the underside of the portal of power making it very easy to transport. The controller itself is smaller than an usual console controller as it has been designed for smaller hands. It is however easy and comfortable to use and is Skylanders branded.

CDW Skylanders Trap Team tablet - 13

If you want to play the game in co-op mode then you can either use another controller or you can use another supported controller or gamepad.

The game itself appears on your tablet and you can either play it holding your tablet or you can slot it into the side of the portal of power, effectively making your own little gaming setup.

CDW Skylanders Trap Team tablet - 4

The portal supports tablets up to 12” in size so you should be ok for most tablets today.

You don’t have to play the game using the controller if you don’t want to. Just switch it off and you can use the touch screen controls on the tablet, and they work surprisingly well! The game detects if you are using the controller, or not, and changes the game for you.

CDW Skylanders Trap Team tablet - 3

You may be thinking that there will be times that you can’t use the portal as you might be in the car, or on a train, well don’t worry as you can actually play the game without using it! If the portal is not connected then the game switches automatically to using “on the go characters” which are digital versions of the toys, in this case Instant Snap Shot and Instant Food Fight. These are separate characters with their own skill trees, but they are essentially the same as the toys, just without having to carry them!

And talking of the toys, all of the previous toys are also supported with the tablet edition too!

The game itself is a free download, you only need to buy the starter pack to get the portal, controller and toys. However you can actually play the game without buying the starter pack! It’s not the full game obviously, but it will be a special introductory adventure that is being created just for this purpose. The idea being that if you like it you can buy the starter pack, and then all the toys!

The game itself is around 1GB for the initial download so you will want to be on a wireless connection when you first download it, and all later levels are actually streamed for you in the background ready for you to play. At this point I don’t know how large those levels will be and if it would be possible to stream them using a data connection (if you were on a train or in a car for example), but that will become clear soon.

I was very impressed with the whole thing, it was easy to setup and the game looks and plays exactly the same as the console version and throwing everything you need into the starter park, including a controller is a great move. I think that a lot of parents are going to find this keeps their children quiet for hours and hours on those long trips.

STT_Gen_TabletPack_Front of Box_1407773116

So the starter pack, which includes the portal of power, two toys, two traps, the controller and a tray will cost £64.99 and will be available at the same time as Skylanders Trap Team on the consoles, which is October 10th in Europe.

Introducing Skylanders Trap Team Tablet edition

0

Skylanders is redefining the Toys-to-Life phenomenon with yet another ground-breaking innovation, Skylanders Trap Team. With Skylanders Trap Team, players can take characters out of the game and place them into physical “Traps” that kids can take with them, effectively bringing Life to Toys.

STT_Tablet_and_Portal_FINAL_HiRes_1407773098

Now, for the first time in franchise history, Activision Publishing, Inc. is bringing the full AAA console experience of a Skylanders game to tablet devices with the  Skylanders Trap Team Tablet Starter Pack. Launching day-and-date with the console version, the Skylanders Trap Team Tablet Starter Pack will include a Bluetooth version of the Traptanium Portal, a new ring of magical energy which reverses the magic of the Toys-to-Life category by letting players bring digital characters into the physical world. The new portal gives players the freedom to dock their tablet, providing a hands-free gaming experience. The Skylanders Trap Team Tablet Starter Pack will also include a Bluetooth-enabled controller for the best possible play experience; a built-in tablet stand; two Skylanders characters; two Traps; and a display tray that lets Portal Masters keep track of the Traps they’ve collected and which villains they have trapped.

Like the console version of the game, all 175 existing Skylanders toys will be forward compatible and playable across all platforms, truly allowing Portal Masters to play wherever and whenever they want. Delivering another meaningful technological leap to the Skylanders franchise, the launch of Skylanders Trap Team on tablet underscores Activision’s continued commitment to bringing significant innovation to the Toys-to-Life category that the company firmly established in 2011.

STT_Gen_TabletPack_Front of Box_1407773116

The game introduces more than 50 new playable Skylanders heroes and more than 40 villains in an all-new adventure, delivering a diverse and dynamic story-driven gameplay experience filled with adventure, combat, puzzles, mini games, activities and platforming, all set within a variety of lush, compelling environments.

KEY FEATURES:
•    Unprecedented Tablet Innovation – Skylanders Trap Team on tablet represents a huge technological leap for the Toys-to-Life category as one of the first AAA experiences of its kind on the platform. The team is delivering a feat of development innovation with a game that was built alongside the console versions, driving an unparalleled level of performance from the tablet devices that it supports.
•    Complete Toys-to-Life, Life to Toys Tablet Experience – The Skylanders Trap Team Tablet Starter Pack gives fans everything they need for a rich gameplay experience wherever and whenever they want to play. Tablet players will experience the Skylanders Trap Team innovation through a Bluetooth© version of the Traptanium Portal and Bluetooth© controller. They can also play the full game on their tablets using touch controls and two digital Skylanders characters and two digital Traps.

•    Two Ways to Play – Once players purchase the tablet Starter Pack and download the game via their tablet’s app store, the game will recognize the Traptanium Portal and unlock the full experience. Players will experience the same AAA content they come to expect from Skylanders console games, but with two ways to play:

•    “Controller” –– Fans can play the game just like the console version using the tablet-specific Traptanium Portal and toys with the custom Bluetooth Skylanders game controller included in the Starter Pack.
•     “Touch Controls” – For players who prefer to use touch controls instead of a controller, fans  have the option to play the game just using on-screen touch controls.

•    Innovative Gameplay – In Skylanders Trap Team, you can play as a Skylander or capture Skylands’ most wanted foes and unleash them for good. It’s up to Portal Masters to find these villains and capture them inside the new Traps that transport the villains into the real world via the Traptanium Portal. Once trapped, players can return the villain to Skylands as a playable character. This exciting new play pattern gives fans the option to switch between playing as a Skylander hero or a villain at any time, creating fun and unique “tag team” gameplay.

Review : Ultra Street Fighter IV

0

Now that the retail boxed version of Ultra Street Fighter IV has arrived it is now the complete edition. Within the boxed title comes everything that was available from the digital upgrade a couple of months prior but with all the alternative costumes that were purchasable over the years. Players like myself who held off from buying the online upgrade that required the Arcade edition before hand have also had the chance to pick up additional costumes through pre ordering the game at selected shops. Doing so and awaiting for the boxed version now means you’ve got everything that Capcom has to offer. This is biggest update to a Street Fighter game to date even though Seth Killian originally planned for the previous title to be the last.

USFIV Review Screens - 10_1401717874

Over the past few years we’ve seen 2 updates, the first being Super Street Fighter that added 10 new characters, then Super Street Fighter Arcade Edition which brought 4 more characters, and now Ultra Street Fighter IV which adds 5 more characters. 3 of the 5 characters you might have already played or come across from 2012’s Street Fighter X Tekken game. Poison, Hugo and Rolento, all from Street Fighter X Tekken have their same moves with some tweaks and are joined by 2 additional characters, Elena and Decapre. Elena is a female Capoeira fighter seen in previous Street Fighters with the unique ability to heal as her ultra move. Fighting only using her feet as Capoeira fighters do, Elena is the only additional character that offers a unique fighting style and is also very quick and accessible to learn. Decapre was the last character to be announced and also debuts in Ultra Street Fighter IV. She has a similar look to Cammy but has her own unique move set and is armed with a claw and some moves which resembles Cammy’s.

USFIV 10_1398876069

With the added characters there sadly isn’t the option to take them into the Trial mode to challenge yourself to furthering your training. Being a feature I only tend to use when I fancy trying out a new character I can’t fault this but there will be some fans out there who’ll miss the 24 stages of trials. Perhaps this is something that could be rectified by an update as opposed to a paid microtransaction.

USFIV Review Screens - 02_1401717873

There’s an additional 6 stages to battle it out on for even more visual variety. Pitstop 109, Mad Gear Hideout, Cosmic Elevator, Blast Furnace, Half Pipe and Jurassic Era Research Facility make their way across from Street Fighter X Tekken which I enjoyed as they were dynamic in that game and some of the background animations have made it over too.

USFIV Review Screens - 05_1401717873

There are a few other additional cool tricks you can now pull off within the matches. From delaying your standing up after being knocked down to throw off your opponent’s timing if they’re anticipating you getting back up, to the new Red Focus move which absorbs multiple attacks in exchange for some of your super bar. But my favourite feature is having the option to having both of your ultra moves. For anyone that doesn’t know, your ultra move is only powered up if you’re taking quite the beating, previously named the Revenge bar which makes sense. Now this ultra bar allows you to do 1 of 2 moves chosen by you whilst selecting your character and can’t be changed mid fight. With the addition of Ultra Combo Double you can now have the option to do either move at the cost of reduced damage to keep it fair. Now players like myself who use a character with an ultra offensive move and an ultra counter move can have game changing options right at our finger tips.

USFIV Review Screens - 11_1401717874

This version of the game has added a lot more than it says on the tin and with almost no faults it’s the best upgrade to the current Street Fighter series. The only crime is that if you’ve moved onto the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 you’ll be missing out as this title is only for the 360 and PS3, for now.

Toy Soldiers-War Chest Announced for PS4, PC, Xbox One

0

Ubisoft and Signal Studios announced Toy Soldiers: War Chest, the next iteration in the Toy Soldiers series. Leaving the battlefields of past eras behind, players face off against rival toy armies to determine who rules the battlefield. Toy Soldiers: War Chest will be available for download on Xbox One, PlayStation4 and Windows PC in early 2015.

toy soldiers war chest

”Partnering with Ubisoft presented an opportunity to create the Toy Soldiers game we had always envisioned,” said D.R. Albright III, the Founder of Signal Studios. “Gamers of all ages can play as and face-off against toys familiar to them from their childhood to recreate the battles of their imaginations. Fans will have a great time learning how each army plays, and the individual strengths of their troops and weapons.”

Four diverse armies will be available at launch. The proud and disciplined Kaiser returns to lead his German Empire forces and defend their reign with new troops, weapons and turrets. New to the franchise is the Star Power army, led by the whimsical but dangerous heroine, Starbright. Her army of unicorn steeds, ferocious pixies, flying Pegasus and laser-shooting teddy bears has come to rain hearts and rainbows of destruction onto the battlefield. Each army defends with their own unique base turrets, combat and aerial attack vehicles and army units, making each gameplay experience distinct. Two additional armies in Toy Soldiers: War Chest will be revealed closer to launch.

With more heroes, missions and playable armies than any previous iteration of Toy Soldiers, Toy Soldiers: War Chest is the most expansive title to date. Additional features in the game include more turrets and turret upgrades, more barrages, new game modes and expanded multiplayer and cooperative gameplay.

Toy Soldiers has always been a top digital arcade title on XBLA and we are very proud to bring the new opus of this well-known franchise on next-gen. We strongly believe the universe of Toy Soldiers will offer a unique and intense gaming experience and we hope that fans will enjoy the deep game mechanics” said Thomas Painçon, EMEA Digital Publishing Director at Ubisoft. “Toy Soldiers is a unique blend of tower defense and strategy, and Toy Soldiers: War Chest makes the toy box eternal, letting gamers face off against rival toys and friends to determine which army will reign victorious.”

Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Multiplayer revealed

1

Today in Cologne, Activision and Sledgehammer Games revealed Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Multiplayer, and we were there.

CoD AW_Biolab_EM1_1407753665

It all starts with the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare exoskeleton and the fundamental way it changes player movement delivering a new level of tactical combat. Speed, strength, agility, and verticality transform how you play. New abilities, movements, perks, equipment and weapon classes offer fans the most personalized, customizable and reward-based Call of Duty multiplayer. It all comes together to make each player feel like a tier one soldier of the future.

CoD AW_Riot_Slam Dunk_1407753674

ADVANCED EXOSKELETON MOVEMENT: With the addition of the exoskeleton movements, the speed of the game increases dramatically. Boost Jump makes higher sightlines easily reachable and offers a new level of vertically. Boost Dodge delivers enhanced maneuverability, while Boost Dash provides mid-air evasive manoeuvrability. And Boost Slam empowers a new air-to-ground melee attack. It comes to life when players combine and chain these new mechanics to move through the map and engage with the enemy unlike anything ever in Call of Duty.

The exoskeleton offers new opportunities for specific exo abilities as detailed below. With the introduction of the variable grenade, the tactical slot in the create-a-class is now open for players to choose an exoskeleton ability.

CoD AW_Riot_Jailbreak_1407753672

SUPPLY DROPS: In Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare customization begins with Supply Drops, which is loot Call of Duty style, bringing a new reward system of more than 1,000 rewards into multiplayer. Supply Drops reward you with items, including Custom Weapons, Character Gear and Reinforcements. And these rewards come in three rarities – Enlisted, Professional, and Elite. In addition, to ranking through XP, Supply Drops will be rewarded through play time and in game challenges.

Custom Weapons: Attribute and cosmetic modifications on base weapons make up the nearly 350 custom weapon options that you can get from supply drops. These new modifications allow a greater range of customization to find the perfect weapon for individual play styles in addition to having a great look.
Gear: Supply drops can also feature gear that allows you to customize your operator for the virtual lobby and in-game. The wide variety of cosmetic customization that players can get through gear will allow everyone on the field to know who you are.
Reinforcements: Players can also be rewarded with one-time-use items that are activated during the match at pre-determined intervals, including perks and low-level scorestreaks. These are great for a one-time trial and burst of added excitement in match. And, like all Supply Drop rewards, Reinforcements come in the three rarity classes – Enlisted, Profession, and Elite.

CoD AW_Riot_Gun Blazing_1407753670

WEAPONS: In Advanced Warfare, players have unprecedented options to find the weapon that best suits their needs. Each weapon features 10 custom options, where cosmetics and attributes vary, which ultimately deliver nearly 350 custom weapons out of the box. On top that, each weapon delivers a spectrum of attachment options, including tried and true attachments as well as all new ones to augment your weapon.

A NEW WEAPON CLASS: The high tech nature of 2054 is coming to multiplayer and there is no better example than the directed energy weapons. The new Heavy Weapons class includes directed energy weapons like the EM1 and EMPm2. These new weapons use the power of weaponized energy to overcome enemies. This class of weapon doesn’t rely on reloads, but instead they are known to overheat after too much activity.

CoD AW_Defender_Under the Bridge_1407753668

PICK 13: The much loved Pick 10 create-a-class format is back with even more customizable options than before. You can now choose which scorestreaks will be included with your class. This addition to the beloved create-a-class format provides more depth to player strategy and play style. In addition to combining scorestreaks with your class, players can customize scorestreaks to make them more powerful, for a cost. For example, players can customize a Remote Turret into a Rocket Turret Module. In addition to customizable scorestreaks, the game introduces Co-Op Scorestreaks, which for the first time, two players can now join up a scorestreak and work together. This is the perfect example of teamwork for those players that rack up score, with those that may not always get the chance to experience the high-end scorestreaks. Teaming up on a Warbird is a perfect way to gain the advantage on the battlefield.

CoD AW_Defender_Bridge the Gap_1407753666

EXO ABILITIES: Brand new to Advanced Warfare, you now have the opportunity to augment your exo through additional exo abilities. Unlike the exo movements that every player has, exo abilities are selectable within Pick 13. For a slot, of course. These new exo abilities are activated by the player during the match, and used until the Exo Battery is depleted.
Exo Shield – A quick-deploy shield attached to your exo’s arm
Exo Overclock – Increased footspeed
Exo Stim – Temporary health regeneration beyond normal levels
Exo Cloak – Short duration visual concealment
Exo Hover – Short duration hovering in place
Exo Ping – Shows enemy movement and weapon fire in the HUD
Exo Trophy System – Destroys incoming grenades and rockets for a limited period of time

EXO PERKS: A slate of new perks impact exo abilities like a perk that suppresses boost so that it’s quieter and as a result a player’s thrusters don’t give away your location on the mini map. Another is the gung-ho perk, which allows players to re-load while sprinting, and shoot while sliding. There’s also exo overcharge, which gives players more energy for their exo battery. Exo Perks take up slots and depend on how players choose to approach their class, but within all customization, there is plenty of flexibility to make your soldier as powerful as you think he can be in the situations you’re playing in.

CoD AW_Biolab_3 on 1_1407753662

VIRTUAL FIRING RANGE: An all-new feature, and a first for Call of Duty. From the Create-a-Class menu or between matches, players can instantly hit the Virtual Firing Range to try out a new item with just a press of the button. No map load, no having to blindly go into a match with a new loadout. Now, players can get an immediate feel for things like the sights, attachments, bullet spread, recoil, and more before the next match even starts. It’s a great way to test-drive a new weapon before heading into battle.

CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION: Take your Call of Duty character to a new level by selecting the heads, eyewear, helmets, shirts, vest kits, gloves, pants, knee guards, boots and even the exoskeleton itself. The possible combinations, including selecting male or female characters, are nearly limitless.

VIRTUAL LOBBY: Advanced Warfare transforms the lobby experience for the first time in Call of Duty, providing the personalized true, virtual showcase called the Virtual Lobby. This is where all of a player’s hard work, both XP Progression and Supply Drop rewards are paid-off for all to see. In the Virtual Lobby you can quickly and easily see everyone’s character in all its glory. Just slide over and look at each character in detail. With their loadouts. With their customization options. With their rare Supply Drop custom weapons, gear and reinforcements as well as weapons, loadouts and all the gear from your character customization, the Virtual Lobby is the best way to show off to friends, or get a peek at something cool that someone else has earned, and to let your accomplishments speak for themselves.

GAME MODES: Advanced Warfare includes fan favorites Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Hardpoint, Search & Destroy, Domination and Team Domination, and more – all delivering new exoskeleton gameplay abilities, as well as:
Uplink – Uplink has been built with teamwork in mind, and to promote fast and frantic competitive gameplay. Both teams fight for control of a satellite drone, and must race – with it in hand – to the opponent’s uplink.
Momentum – Based on the War game mode originally found in Call of Duty®: World at War, Momentum is the Call of Duty version of tug of war. Five consecutive capture points exist on the map, but only one is active at a time. The more kills and captures your team gets, the faster you are able to capture additional points. Once the other team captures on you, the momentum meter gets reset, so your team needs to be at its best the whole game.

MAPS:
Biolab – Part of a snowy secret base, this map features both close quarters indoor combat along with long range outdoor terrain with added verticality for quick and fast-paced action. Use your Exo boost to take the action to the rooftops.

Riot – Set in a bombed out prison after a devastating riot, this penitentiary still has some defense mechanisms active. Crafted to utilize a classic 3-lane approach, this map offers two large open areas on both sides of the map along with a large cell block right in the center for an all-comers shoot-out that thrusts players right into the action.

Ascend – Taking place in a futuristic Space Elevator terminal, this location features a map-based score streak that allows players to call in the turret defenses. Ascend also was designed with clean 3-Lane format and a verticality that is tailor made for exoskeleton abilities.

Defender – In the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge, an abandoned bunker that’s features open gameplay and is a perfect showcase for the new exoskeleton abilities. An added aspect to this map is the dynamic event. A tsunami hits with strategic regularity and changes a good portion of the map.
