Review: Aragami

When the announcement trailer for Aragami was released I was captivated by it. The art style was impactful and vibrant and the atmospheric musical score was elegant and delicate. But looking and sounding amazing do not alone make a decent video game, but with a great setting and promise of an exciting stealth game, I was eager to try it out.

Aragami at its core is a challenging third person stealth game. The player takes the role of Aragami, a vengeful spirit who has been summoned by Yamiko, the only surviving member of a clan that was wiped out by a rival clan, the Kaiho. Yamiko used a ritual to being Aragami to life with just one goal, to exact revenge upon the Kaiho. Aragami is a ninja, but a ninja with supernatural powers that enable him to use the shadows to his advantage by harnessing it to fuel his dark abilities that only grow stronger as the story progresses.

From the very start however, Aragami has a rather constrictive opening to the game where he is literally born into the world but has to learn about who and what he is and that includes his abilities and powers. So the early stages ultimately focus on the stealth nature of the game as the player not only learns how to use Aragami’s powers but restricted to what powers can be used. Each mission essentially is about getting from the beginning point A to the exit at point B, by going as undetected as possible through each area. Enemy guards are patrolling each area, with patrol routes and guard points and the player has to navigate around them to reach the goal or exit.

The way in which shadows play a part in the stealth is great fun. Shadows not only allow Aragami to do his Ninja stuff but they also serve as the source of his powers. The basic abilities include the ability to teleport between shadows and to create shadows to allow the use of his powers in areas without shadows. More abilities can be unlocked which will aid in more stealthy killing and to track enemies so you can plan your path accordingly. Defensive and offensive skills are unlocked later in the game that open up more options for the player but for the early chapters you are stuck only using the basic shadow abilities and this is where I found Aragami to be rather harsh.

aragami-1

It uses all the now standard stealth gameplay techniques you would expect but it rarely allows you to break from being stealthy. It wants the player to be a true shadow and remain undetected but will put obstacles in your way such as enemies that will tempt you to engage them. Whilst you can perform stealth kills, being more action orientated can be punishing as the enemies, if they see you within melee range, can instantly kill you with their attacks. If guards are alerted to something being wrong, such as discovering a body or if the player is seen, then every guard is alerted and will begin a search for you until you either leave the area or can remain undetected during their search. Not only are the guards highly reactive to any mistake you make but the layout of the environments have plenty of light sources such as fires or candle lanterns which not only make Aragami highly visible, but they will also drain his shadow power and prevent their use.

All together this can lead to some very frustrating encounters in the opening chapters as the player is learning how to use the shadow abilities but also just to navigate the environment. Moving from cover to cover without the abilities is possible but make a mistake near a guard or two and the game will punish the player with a straight death leading to a checkpoint restart, undoing minutes of gameplay. On controller I found that using Shadow Leap to teleport between shadows could be very clumsy especially when trying to use it to jump to higher vantage points with the camera being unforgiving when trying to find a point to leap to. Taking out guards with a stealth kill is satisfying with beautifully animated executions and this side of the game becomes more enjoyable as more offensive techniques are unlocked to allow more range attacks as well as traps to take out guards to help clear a path through a section.

Completing a chapter will have the performance of the player scored according to how they approached it. Be truly stealthy and remain undetected either by avoiding combat altogether or by killing all the guards and you will score a high rating. Being detected or having the guards alerted too many times and the score will be docked. The game really wants the player to perfect the art of stealth, forcing the player to really learn how to play without the stronger shadow abilities and techniques first before making life a little easier with them. For some players who enjoy such a challenge Aragami delivers it on a plate but for players perhaps not that familiar with other stealth based games, it does have a steep learning curve early on which could be off putting.

aragami-2

The story is told via interaction between Aragami and Yamiko in dialogue scenes as Aragami is really like a new born in that he does not know the world around him or his abilities and so relies on Yamiko to help him understand not only what has happened and why he was summoned but also in understanding his powers. Cut-scenes help tell the story as Aragami begins to experience the memories of Yamiko and of what happened to her, a side effect of the ritual used to summon him. It is a wonderfully told story but one which never moves beyond that of simply seeking vengeance.

The soothing musical score really suits the style of stealth being experienced with its quiet and calming melodies that lift the experience during play. It really is one of the best written and performed soundtracks to a game I have played this year and compliments the stunning visual cell shaded style of the game. The little details such as Aragami almost turning to shadow when shrouded in darkness is a nice touch just as being near light robs him of that cloak of invisibility. You can even see via the tunic Aragami wears, when his shadow abilities are fueled by shadow as it will glow with energy when in shadow but the player can see it draining away when in lighted areas. The environments are well designed to offer different routes to the exit made possible by utilising the shadow abilities such as Shadow Leap. It really is a beautiful world to experience through the game.

Fans of stealth games will find that Aragami can be a really satisfying and fulfilling gaming experience. Though it can be unforgiving early on, persistence opens up more and more ways in which the player can tackle each chapter with each new technique cleverly giving the player the option of a tutorial to understand how to use it before trying it in the game world. It also has a clever co-op play via the multiplayer option where you can team up with another player to share the experience is a great touch as well. I often found myself simply at the menu screen listening and absorbing its sublime music and its one of the most striking looking game I have enjoyed this year. But Aragami is a stealth game and by sticking to that rigid gameplay style and a harsh learning curve might make this one for die-hard stealth fans only, which would be a shame as it has so many aspects that elevate it to possibly being something very special indeed among all the heavy hitter blockbuster releases hitting the store each week.

Aragami is a game which wants the player to stay in the shadows but it is a game that deserves to have a light shone upon it as it needs to be seen….and played.

Preview: Dishonored 2

0

I loved the first Dishonored, from its world to its visual art style and amazing music. Sadly I was unable to attend EGX this year and so missed out on the chance to be one of the first to get hands on with the Dishonored 2 playable demo. Thankfully the lovely folk over at Bethesda UK held a special community event after EGX which they kindly invited us over to their offices to try out an extended gameplay demo.

*This hands-on preview was played on a demo build of Dishonored 2 and not the full release version*

The demo featured the fourth mission in the full game, Clockwork Mansion and we could play as either returning hero Corvo Attano or new to the series, the former Empress Emily Kaldwin. The level has two objectives that must be completed to end the level. First is to find and rescue the captured Anton Sokolov and then find and deal with his captor, Kirin Jindosh.

I first chose to play as new character Emily, trained by Corvo and with similar supernatural abilities as him, I was very curious to see how her gameplay differed from Corvo’s. However I was immediately distracted by the level environment of the Clockwork Mansion itself and I took several minutes simply enjoying being back in the Dishonored universe. Visually it is looking amazing, continuing the Victorian industrial vibe from the first game. Lighting is very much improved now with the jump to current consoles and it really helps to bring a vibrant look to the environment and buildings. Stepping into the Clockwork Mansion and it very soon lives up to its name in one of the most stunning surprises possible. Upon entering the mansion you discover a lever and after pulling it, the entire room begins to change as walls begin to move and an elaborate gear system starts to transform the very room and layout of the mansion before your eyes.

dishonored-2-1

I found Emily to be very quick in both movement and fighting, and within minutes of play found playing as her to be very different to how I remember being Corvo in the first game. The key difference however between Emily and Corvo lies within her powers with three distinct new abilities that stand out. First we have her version of Corvo’s Blink move, Far Reach which feels more like a grapple hook style teleport than the sure footing teleport of Corvo. It can also be used to pull enemies towards Emily from a distance, something that will come in very handy both in high and low chaos runs. Domino is a very intriguing and amply named ability which allows Emily to link a chain of enemies and by taking out one, all in the chain will also be affected making this one very lethal ability once leveled up.

But by far my favourite ability Emily can utilise and something I found to be a great help whilst trying a non lethal and low chaos run for this mission was Shadow Walk. This ability reminded me of the Darkness games and with it Emily can turn herself into a creature of shadow, able to move almost undetected and take out enemies either non lethal or lethal. The animation of this power is so impactful and I loved the detail of the reaction to enemy guards when they see Emily in Shadow Walk as they are scared and startled by this creature. As a supernatural ability it greatly increases Emily’s stealth techniques and is great for sneaking up on guards or moving around without being seen. It is going to be great fun playing as Emily and both learning how to play as her from the start and how to improve her abilities to tailor your approach to the missions.

Tackling both objectives really plays to the strengths that I found so compelling about the first Dishonored. The environment and level layout allows different ways to move around which is very useful when trying to go for a non lethal path through it. The transforming rooms via the levers allow you to configure the whole mansion to either help you navigate it and to change the guard positions. You can also tackle the objectives whichever way you feel is best so you can either try to rescue Anton or you can go right for Jindosh. The player choice to play how you want is something that stood out in the original game and the developers have really taken that to the next level with this sequel. This was an incredibly fun mission to play and it gives me such hope for the rest of the game with all the lovely surprises it has for players.

Emily is tremendous fun to play as, her abilities are so well suited to either low or high chaos runs. I was happy with just how different her style is to Corvo, enough that you really do feel that playing the game as either character will offer a different experience including the dialogue exchanges with other characters. I found it challenging to go for a non lethal low chaos run but as Emily it was very enjoyable learning to use her abilities to best suit this gameplay and this level proved to be a great playground for her.

To end this preview session I switched to Corvo and decided to go for a full on high chaos run with him. Stepping back into Corvo’s mask after playing as Emily, did feel a little strange. His powers from the first game are back and the satisfaction of using his full combat strengths both in his own powers and in using weapons made going full on badass a joy with this level. The sounds from the sword fighting to the execution animations really brought the game to life as only Dishonored can do. It excels in both offering a rewarding experience for either a low chaos to high chaos style of playing. Corvo is brutal and even more dangerous than before.

dishonored-2-3

I was extremely impressed with this preview demo and spending a good couple of hours trying out both Emily and Corvo and their abilities in the Clockwork Mansion showed me just how amazing Dishonored 2 could be. It played brilliantly with enough retention of what made the first game so iconic but refreshes it so much that the jump to current consoles has most certainly been worth the wait. Fans of the first game are in for a real treat when Dishonored 2 releases in November.

IMAX and Odeon & UCI Cinemas to Launch First IMAX VR Centre In Europe

Today IMAX has announced an agreement with leading European exhibitor, ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group, to install the first pilot IMAX VR centre in Europe at its Printworks multiplex location in Manchester in the UK.

The centre, which the parties are planning to open by the end of 2016, will deliver guests immersive, multi-dimensional VR experiences, including entertainment content and games.

imaxvr-logo-full-color

The IMAX VR Experience features a unique combination of premium technology that lets users see, feel, move and play in new worlds in a powerfully immersive and realistic way, much like IMAX theatres offer moviegoers a differentiated and best-in-class film experience. IMAX is working with Acer and Starbreeze AB to incorporate next-generation headset-mounted display (HMD) technology that offers industry-leading resolution and an extra-wide peripheral field of view.

IMAX will provide the centre an ongoing array of new, premium interactive content experiences that are expected to range between 5 and 15 minutes in length each. The Company is in advanced stages with several content developers, including Hollywood studios and gaming publishers, to produce and distribute high-quality VR experiences to its centres. IMAX also plans to eventually incorporate premium content resulting from the cinema-grade virtual reality camera that it is currently developing in partnership with Google.

“For nearly 50 years, IMAX’s mission has been to give audiences – of all ages and across generations — a reason to get off their couches and leave the comfort of home to go out to the cinema. Today’s agreement with ODEON marks an important milestone in our continued effort to deliver differentiated entertainment experiences – now through location-based VR,” said IMAX Corp. CEO Richard L. Gelfond. “We are extremely pleased with the significant progress we’ve made on this initiative in this short period of time and believe this commitment from such a significant European exhibitor is a testament to the interest and potential of this offering. ODEON is a longtime partner that shares our vision in delivering guests the ultimate in premium experiences and we look forward to ushering in the next evolution of immersive entertainment with this test centre.”

The centre will employ a new modular design – proprietary to IMAX – that will consist of several “pods” to allow multiple players to enjoy interactive, exciting, moveable VR experiences. The pods, which are designed to optimize user mobility and interaction in virtual environments, can be adapted for specific content experiences – whether single or multi-user.

“We’re always looking for new ways to give our guests an even more immersive experience, so are very excited to be hosting Europe’s first IMAX VR centre at ODEON Printworks” said Paul Donovan, CEO of ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group. “We have a longstanding close relationship with IMAX which creates unforgettable experiences in many of our cinemas across Europe, so we are delighted to be alongside them again, at the cutting edge of innovation, to introduce and pilot awesome new technology which will delight our guests.”

IMAX is in the process of launching its first showroom and pilot IMAX VR centre in Los Angeles and is targeting to open additional test facilities in China, Japan, the U.S., the Middle East and Western Europe in the coming months. The Company plans to use these pilot locations to test several factors including the overall customer experience, pricing models and the types of content featured. If successful, the intent is to roll out the concept globally to select multiplexes as well as commercial locations such as shopping centers and tourist destinations.
