Review: Rise and Shine

The moment you see that the world a game is based on is called Gamerearth, you can already tell where the theme is heading. Combine that with the knowledge that the game comes from Adult Swim and you can be forgiven for expecting a rather tongue in cheek funny adult themed game and this is where Rise and Shine almost loses its way in trying to define exactly what it is supposed to be as an experience for players.

Rise and Shine puts the player in the role of Rise, a young boy living on Gamerearth, a place inhabited by heroes who have more than just a passing resemblance to certain classic video game characters. The world is suddenly invaded by a evil army of space marines and whilst running to protection inside a local shopping mall, Rise comes across a Legendary Warrior, who falls in battle and gives Rise his gun in order to fight back and save the world. The gun is a legendary pistol called Shine, who can speak and offers to help Rise in his fight.

The game itself on the surface is a standard 2D side scrolling shooter but soon starts to throw in gameplay styles from other well known game series. Soon the game injects a cover based system those familiar with Gears of War will recognize, an addition which in the early stages does work well. Rise and Shine also uses a twin stick shooter system to make it stand out from conventional side scroller shooters. So what we have is a game that has been influenced and inspired by the gameplay styles of other titles, trying to blend them together in a way that is refreshing but sadly, only succeeds in making the gameplay messy.

The gameplay starts off fairly routine but quickly escalates to almost silly levels that frustrate and constrain the gameplay. Shine soon unlocks the ability to use different forms of ammo from remote controlled bullets to elemental bullets. The levels introduce puzzles in order to progress further which will require using the special ammo to unlock doors or turn off security systems. I actually liked this element; it gave the levels an extra challenge outside of the action and complimented the level design well. But the gameplay does start to trip up on itself sadly and this is the main fault of Rise and Shine.

At points of the game, the difficulty will spike at points, turning Rise and Shine into more of a bullet hell style game which the player will have to try and avoid a shower of bullets from the enemy. When this happens, the control system becomes increasingly unhelpful and cheap deaths will halt progression. The cover based system falters under the relentless amount of bullets or enemies on screen and soon the player can be overwhelmed by the action. It felt as though the game was attempting to make up for its very short length, between two and two and half hours to complete, by making sections overly difficult to force repeating sections or boss encounters. Now other games use this style very effectively, but here it simply feels unfair leaving a trial and error system to rinse and repeat certain sections. It regretfully sullies the experience and sours the cocktail of gaming styles Rise and Shine tries to bring together which can work in parts but ultimately breaks itself far too much.

Visually the hand drawn art style is striking and gives it a real comic book visual style I really liked. The soundtrack and audio to the game is equally fun but just as the gameplay lets itself down, the hard work in the visuals and audio then falls down in terms of the story. It is a relatively simply story in Rise and Shine, hero must rise to save his world from an enemy but it relies on parody far too much which at first is kind of cute but soon becomes tiresome. The Legendary Warrior who gives Rise the pistol Shine, bears more than a passing resemblance to a certain Nintendo hero, and the parodying continues into other well known game series, these are not subtle and end up feeling forced into the story though but considering the setting of the world is expected.

Overall Rise and Shine is a game trying to do a lot of things but ultimately over complicates the fundamentals. By being a jack of all trades it relies far too much on simply making it difficult to the player but in a way that is not rewarding or satisfying enough for the player to feel like they were challenged more than simply surviving cheap AI tactics. The visual style is wasted by such a short game and the humour quickly evaporates which considering the two hour length is a disappointment. Fans of side scroller shooters will get more out of this than a casual player but when the controls and mechanics start to unravel you simply end up thinking it is a shame they did not focus more on just making the game a bit longer and rewarding.

Spoiler Free Two Minute Review: Jack Reacher Never Go Back

With Jack Reacher Never Go Back released on DVD and Blu-ray, here is our spoiler free two minute review.

Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) returns to enforce his bold brand of justice in the action-packed sequel based on author Lee Child’s best-selling series. When Army Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders) is framed for treason, Reacher discovers she’s the target of a massive government conspiracy. With help from Turner and a mysterious new ally, Reacher risks everything to take down a powerful organization that will stop at nothing to protect its secrets.

This is the second Jack Reacher movie to be released, and as a big fan of the books I was looking forward to seeing what they would do with this movie.

The film begins with Reacher sitting in a dinner after an altercation with a few guys, and following a conversation with Major Susan Turner, he decides to make his way to meet her for dinner. The problem is once he gets there, he finds she’s been taken into custody and he’s framed for murder! From that point on it’s pretty much non stop with both the Army and the bad guys chasing Reacher and Turner, and a girl they have with them, and trying to  uncover what’s going on and clear their names.

I enjoyed the movie, it had a little more story to it than the first Jack Reacher movie. Fans of the books will always feel a little disappointed though – there just isn’t time to do Reacher justice in a movie, especially when there are over 20 Reacher books now. With a lot of material to choose from I was surprised they went with this one, but that said, it’s still an enjoyable movie and worth a watch.

If you are after an action movie with a bit of a story then check out Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. And whilst you are at it, why not pick up some of the books, you won’t be disappointed.

JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK is available now on Digital Download, Blu-ray and DVD.

Review: Musaic MP5 streaming audio player

As we all know there is alot of streaming audio players out there, at the heart of the Musaic MP5 (Amazon £279.95) is a beautiful sounding amp more on this later on in the review, which in the MP5’s case outputs 18W per side into two full-range 55mm front-firing drive units made from doped paper cones with dust caps.

A rear grab handle also acts as a discreet bass port, to further aide lower frequency reproduction and both models feature a custom-tuned version of HDSX signal processing, claimed to expand the listening position’s sweet-spot.

10 touch sensitive panel buttons

With 10 touch-sensitive top-panel buttons emulating smartphone icons that include power, volume and mute in the right bank and play controls to the left, which also double up as memory recall buttons. There’s also a heart-shaped ‘like’ icon and light bulb symbol, revealing how the Musaics are also designed to work with streaming services and smart home lighting systems.

3.5mm input/USB charge socket, Ethernet port

Physical inputs are limited to a rear-panel 3.5mm analogue input, a USB-A charge socket for smartphones and the like and an Ethernet port. The system’s real talent, however, lies in its streaming support, and to access everything it has to offer, you need to download the free Musaic app (for Android and iOS). Setting up a wi-fi connection is plain sailing.

Sound

The way how the MP5 glues the various instruments within the track together in a cohesive manner, allowing all of its elements to combine and build the music’s overriding atmospheric, to hook me in.

At the bottom of the screen is a row of music source icons to access music stored on my phone, internet radio stations, music libraries on my network (including my NAS drive), plus a range of third-party streaming services.

For the latter, seamless integration is provided for Spotify Connect, and you’ll need Spotify’s Premium package to access this. There’s also support for AUPEO!, Murfie, Napster, Qualcomm AllPlay,, including Tidal.

Hitting the home icon takes you to the ‘Rooms’ menu, which lists each Musaic player on your network, allowing you to stream music to each individually, or group them to play simultaneously, with one acting as a ‘master’ allowing it to relay music on, such as when streaming via Bluetooth.

With the Musaic MP5 has the range of file types is supported including MP3/AAC/ALAC/FLAC/AIFF and WAV up to 24-bit/192kHz, alongside aptX Bluetooth.

While listening to the MP5, while was listening to it I positioned myself about 2m in front of the MP5, to test the quality of sound from the device, with listening to my test tracks, the instruments are placed precisely where they should be with the guitars at the centre of the mix, complemented by horns and tambourines at the edges, alongside layers of percussion deeper still. Moving left or right of this position and the musical image remains the same, continuing to sound whole and well-rounded, with less drop off or over attention on areas of the frequency band than I’d expected. As I continue to move away from my listening position, the music gives a good impression of following me around the room without getting too lost or blurred.

Conclusion

The outset from the M5 has been engineered for maximum sound quality from the compact cases, meaning your office or kitchen need not suffer from audio that’s overly compromised. And while the Musaics’ onboard controls are intentionally limited, thankfully the accompanying app is very user-friendly, allowing you to jump across each device in the moment. Also Musaic can be connected to smart lighting systems and IFTTT to create a smart home that’s equally simple to set up.

If you looking for a good streaming speaker system then your ears will love you for it.

Rogue Trooper is back in Rogue Trooper Redux

0

The most feared soldier on Nu Earth is back in business! ROGUE TROOPER REDUX will bring 2000 AD’s blue-skinned GI to Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Back in 2006, the original ROGUE TROOPER set the benchmark for video game adaptations of comic books. Developed by Rebellion, the studio behind Sniper Elite 4 and owners of British comic book powerhouse 2000 AD, it was widely acclaimed for bringing the cult sci-fi strip to life in an authentic, tactical, cover-based third-person shooter that debuted before the genre became the gaming staple it is today.

ROGUE TROOPER REDUX will remaster the Rebellion classic for a new generation of players, taking them to the chem-blasted battlefields of Nu Earth. Rogue, a bio-engineered Genetic Infantryman (or “GI”) immune to the planet’s poisonous atmosphere, is the last soldier standing against the colonial Nort regime. Carrying three fallen comrades as biochips in his equipment, Rogue is a one-unit squad of death and destruction, and he only has one thing on his mind – REVENGE.

ROGUE TROOPER REDUX is being developed in partnership with experienced UK studio TickTock Games, making it the first 2000 AD game developed outside of Rebellion.

Nintendo Switch announces the first Indie titles coming to eShop

0

With the Nintendo Switch console launches this Friday on 3rd March, and people can expect an exciting line-up of games on Nintendo eShop for day one and beyond. Nintendo has been working closely with independent publishers and developers to deliver a steady flow of unique and original experiences to Nintendo eShop.

More than 60 quality indie games are confirmed for Nintendo Switch this year alone, and many games take advantage of unique Nintendo Switch features, including multiple play modes (TV mode, handheld mode, tabletop mode), flexible control options, local and online multiplayer, and innovative Joy-Con functionality like HD rumble. In a Nintendo Switch Nindies Showcase video, Nintendo highlighted some of these games that are in development.

  • Runner3 from Choice Provisions: Runner3 continues the joyous adventures of CommanderVideo from BIT.TRIP RUNNER and Runner2. Players will encounter quests, branching paths, item shops, new Retro Challenges, new character moves, new dance moves, and a roster of characters that somehow manages to rival the strangeness of Runner2. The game is scheduled to launch exclusively for Nintendo Switch this autumn.
  • SteamWorld Dig 2 from Image & Form Games: In the sequel to the award-winning original you must dig deep, gain riches and explore an underworld riddled with danger. The game is scheduled to launch this summer.
  • Yooka-Laylee from Team17 and Playtonic Games: Explore huge, beautiful worlds, meet an unforgettable cast of characters and horde a vault-load of shiny collectibles as buddy-duo Yooka (the green one) and Laylee (the wisecracking bat with the big nose). The buddy-duo platformer is coming to Nintendo Switch soon, with multiplayer functionality perfect for the system.
  • Blaster Master Zero from Inti Creates: The same elements that made the original Blaster Master a hit are back, including side-scrolling vehicular combat, top-down adventuring and a huge sci-fi landscape, in addition to a host of new and improved gameplay systems. The game includes a two-player mode and will have numerous character cameos coming soon. Blaster Master Zero launches exclusively on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS family systems on 9th March.
  • Pocket Rumble from Chucklefish Games and Cardboard Robot Games: This deep 2D fighter makes players want to throw down, anywhere, anytime. The battles get even more intense with the inclusion of HD rumble: when players get hit by a weak attack, it’ll feel very different from getting rocked by a strong one. The game is scheduled to launch as a console exclusive for Nintendo Switch in March.
  • Flipping Death from Zoink Games: Welcome to Flatwood Peaks, a small whimsical town with a problem – Death is on vacation. Play as Penny and help the ghosts with their peculiar problems on The Otherside. This puzzling adventure game is scheduled to come to Nintendo Switch later this year.
  • Mr. Shifty from tinyBuild and Team Shifty: Shift through bullets, and master lightning-fast takedowns in a new kind of action game. Mr. Shifty follows a teleportation-fuelled heist to break into the world’s most secure facility. Shift through walls, through bullets, cover huge distances and be everywhere at once. One shot kills. Survive on skills. HD rumble allows players to feel every punch, shot and crash. The game is scheduled to launch first on Nintendo Switch this April.
  • WarGroove from Chucklefish Games: This turn-based strategy game offers local and online matches for one to four players. The game is scheduled to launch later this year.
  • Stardew Valley from Chucklefish Games and ConcernedApe: Nintendo Switch will be the first console to support the game’s new multiplayer feature. The open-ended, country-life RPG is scheduled to launch this summer.
  • Shakedown Hawaii from vBlank: This 16-bit spiritual successor to Retro City Rampage aims to be twice as good with twice the bits. From the boardroom to the streets, Shakedown Hawaii parodies big business and the white collar crimes that go alongside. Build your empire, monopolize the markets and collaterally re-zone the island’s destructible sandbox. It’s scheduled to launch first on Nintendo Switch this April.
  • Graceful Explosion Machine from Vertex Pop: Skilfully pilot the advanced Graceful Explosion Machine (GEM) fighter while blasting swarms of crystalline enemies with your ludicrously overpowered quad-weapon array. This side-scrolling arcade shooter features HD rumble support, which means players will really be able to feel those machines explode. The game is scheduled to launch this April.
  • Tumbleseed from aeiowu: A small seed heads up a mountain to save his home in this physics-based puzzle game. More than 30 unique upgrades help the seed overcome challenges and enemies. HD rumble means players will feel seeds traversing across the screen. The game is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch this spring.
  • Overcooked: Special Edition from Team17 and Ghost Town Games: In Overcooked, players must journey through a variety of cruel and unusual kitchens on their quest to become master chefs capable of conquering an ancient edible evil which plagues the land. Play solo or engage in classic, chaotic couch co-op for up to four players in both co-operative and competitive challenge modes. The special edition features the original game, plus all of the DLC. HD rumble integration means players can feel every chop through a tomato and the slosh of soup in a pot. Overcooked: Special Edition is coming later this year.
  • The Escapists 2 from Team17: The sequel to the hugely popular prison escape series supports drop-in/drop-out co-op for up to four players. Players can tie together knotted sheets and use them to climb down high windows in new multi-level prisons and find other new ways to make a break for freedom. The Escapists 2 is coming later this year.
  • GoNNER from Raw Fury and Art In Heart: GoNNER is a score-based, procedurally generated platformer with roguelike elements. GoNNER is also a story about friendship between Ikk, Death and a space whale named Sally. The console version of the game launches first on Nintendo Switch with additional content tailor-made for the console later this year.
  • Kingdom: Two Crowns from Raw Fury and Noio: In Kingdom: Two Crowns, attend to your domain, border to border, or venture into the wild to discover its wonders and threats. First revealed today, two players can come together in co-op mode to rule a kingdom. Their choices bring hope or despair to their subjects. The game is scheduled to launch later this year.
  • Dandara from Raw Fury and Long Hat House: Dandara has awoken to reshape the world. In this strange world of quirky characters, nothing is as it seems. In this bizarre, gravity- bending world with hidden beauty, it’s up to Dandara, jumping from surface to surface, to restore order and direct a directionless world. The game is scheduled to launch on Nintendo Switch this summer with exclusive features and functionality, including HD rumble support.

To access Nintendo eShop, a system update that will be available on launch day is required. The system update downloads in the background, is designed to install quickly and doesn’t disrupt gameplay.

Xbox One to get its own style of Netflix for Games

0

The new Xbox One gaming subscription service is called Xbox Game Pass, which gives you unlimited access to over 100 Xbox One and Xbox 360 backward compatible games on Xbox One for £7.99 a month. Xbox Game Pass started rolling out to select members of the Xbox Insider Program at 2pm GMT today (28th Feb), and will launch to the broader community later this spring.

Xbox Insider Program:
• As is common with new features and programs going into preview, Xbox Game Pass will be an early build with some feature limitations and will not be on par with the final experience that will be available later this spring.
• Most notable for users in the Xbox Insider Program will be a limited catalogue (i.e. approximately 20 titles in preview, many of them arcade) and potentially some slight tweaks to the user interface. Most AAA titles in the Xbox Game Pass catalogue will begin appearing in when the program launches to the broader Xbox community later this spring.
• You can expect to run into bugs while in the Xbox Insider Program. Note that the main focus of Preview is to test features and report bugs so the team can refine the experience before it launches broadly.
• Xbox Game Pass will initially launch to the Xbox Insider Program without full localisation, meaning the product description and channel names will appear in English. When the program launches to the broader Xbox community later this spring, the product description and channel names will be localised appropriately.
Some of the great titles coming later this spring when Xbox Game Pass launches to the broader Xbox community include: “Halo 5: Guardians,” “Saints Row IV Re-Elected,” “NBA 2K16,” “Mad Max,” “LEGO Batman,” “Mega Man Legacy Collection,” “Terraria,” “Payday 2,” “Gears of War: Ultimate Edition,” “Fable III,” “SoulCalibur II” and “Tekken Tag 2.” Note that these titles will not be part of the Xbox Insider Program.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War coming this August PC/PS4/PS4 Pro/ Xbox One and Project Scorpio

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has today announced Middle-earth: Shadow of Wa, the sequel to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Developed by Monolith Productions, Middle-earth: Shadow of War features an original story with the return of Talion and Celebrimbor, who must go behind enemy lines to forge an army and turn all of Mordor against the Dark Lord, Sauron.

In Middle-earth: Shadow of War, players wield a new Ring of Power and confront the deadliest of enemies, including Sauron and his Nazgul, in a monumental battle for Middle-earth. The open-world action-adventure game is brought to life through the expansion of the award-winning Nemesis System. The robust personalization from the first game is now applied to the entire world where the environments and characters are all shaped by player actions and decisions, creating a personal world unique to every gameplay experience.    Middle-earth: Shadow of War will be available for Xbox One, Project Scorpio, Windows 10 PC (Windows Store and Steam), PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro beginning 25th August, 2017.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War will be available as an Xbox Play Anywhere title.  “Monolith Productions continues to innovate by introducing deeper, more personalised gameplay experiences, coupled with authentic storytelling,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “Middle-earth: Shadow of War truly drives the genre forward by taking the Nemesis System to new heights and allowing players to create their own personal journey within Middle-earth.”   “Following the amazing reception to Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, we massively expanded every dimension of the game, including the world, the story, the RPG systems, the core gameplay and of course the personal player stories of the Nemesis System,” said Michael de Plater, Vice President, Creative, Monolith Productions. “As lifelong fans of Middle-earth, we are so grateful to have the privilege to bring to life the most incredible fantasy world ever created in a new way, for a new generation.

With Middle-earth: Shadow of War, we can’t wait to see the amazing stories players are going to create and share.”   The innovative Nemesis System created unique personal stories through procedurally-generated enemies who remember every encounter and are differentiated by their personality, strengths and weaknesses.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War expands this innovation with the introduction of Followers who bring about entirely new stories of loyalty, betrayal and revenge. The Nemesis System is also expanded to create a unique personal world through Nemesis Fortresses, which allows players to utilize different strategies to conquer dynamic strongholds and create personalized worlds with their unique Orc army.

Set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, Middle-earth: Shadow of War continues the original narrative of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Players will be engrossed in a richer, more personal and expansive world full of epic heroes and villains, iconic locations, original enemy types, even more personalities and a new cast of characters with untold stories.

As an Xbox Play Anywhere title, players can purchase a digital version of Middle-earth: Shadow of War once and play it on both Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. Gamers can pick up where they left off on another Xbox One or Windows 10 PC, bringing all the saves, game add-ons and achievements with them at no additional cost.
