Review: R-Type Delta: HD Boosted

R-Type Delta: HD Boosted hits the shelves approximately 27 years after the original wowed audiences. Accordingly, many fans of shmups will be revelling in this news. The original broke many barriers and set high standards for a much-loved genre. Furthermore, it was the first title in the series to use 3D polygon graphics instead of the traditional 2D approach.

This shoot ’em up was developed by CITY CONNECTION and TAKExOFF and published by Clear River Games AB. It is a single-player experience that is fast-paced, cruel, and great to look at. Furthermore, this polished release features new music to add to the intense atmosphere. This may disappoint purists, but I adore the new soundtrack and the wonderful sci-fi edge.

R-Type Delta: HD Boosted tells a devastating tale.

Epic battles and a risk to humanity go hand-in-hand. If you then add in lightning-fast spaceships, aliens, projectiles, and huge bosses, you get an epic tale. This is exactly what happens in R-Type Delta: HD Boosted! The year is 2163, and a spaceship returns to Earth after it destroys the Bydo Empire. A year passes, and strange objects begin to fall from the sky. Additionally, the Moritz-G falls from the sky. This unstoppable behemoth destroys a city and requires a prototype ship to resolve the matter.

The story shouldn’t matter, but it’s wonderfully told during each chapter. Although it isn’t always obvious, minimalist layers and an ever-changing environment create a fantasy, dark atmosphere that is tough to ignore. The subtle elements are not easy to spot, and much of the fast-paced madness makes it tough to focus on the little things.

Familiar action.

If you’ve played the original, R-Type Delta: HD Boosted will be familiar. You may select 3 unique vessels to complete your mission. Each ship has special skills and abilities that must be mastered. Moreover, the action is quite cruel, as you must have lightning-fast reactions, a photographic memory, and plenty of patience as you try to tackle every stage.

As you ramp up the difficulty, things really get out of hand. Consequently, I chickened out and kept things simple. However, if you mastered the original or you are a veteran of the genre, you will want to make things harder to keep everything challenging and fun.

R-Type Delta: HD Boosted looks amazing.

The 1998 version looked amazing at the time. As such, R-Type Delta: HD Boosted delivers a brilliant visual spectacle. The sharp imagery, simple backdrops, and wonderful colour palette are great to look at. Additionally, it runs with no issues. I didn’t check the frame rate, but I had witnessed no latency or lagging. Additionally, it had no bugs or screen tears.

The audio is truly spectacular! The crazy soundtrack is filled with drama and darkness. Moreover, it is so high energy that you’ll struggle to stay calm when you are surrounded by death and madness. The sound effects are great, and the sci-fi noises work perfectly with the futuristic action.

Brilliant controls.

This genre kicks my ass repeatedly. As such, if the controls are terrible, I’m instantly turned off. Thankfully, R-Type Delta: HD Boosted has exceptional and responsive controls. Mastering your special weapons and moving across each side-scrolling stage was a joy. Moreover, a little trial and error goes a long way as you begin each lengthy playthrough.

This is a nostalgic and well-polished shmup that’ll keep you playing repeatedly. Its action is a perfect reminder of what makes this genre so good. Moreover, it is easy to pick up, but tough to defeat. Therefore, it drives you mad but pushes you to keep coming back for more.

R-Type Delta: HD Boosted is a well-polished and addictive game.

R-Type Delta: HD Boosted is unbelievably addictive. Testing your skills and flying each ship was challenging. Additionally, getting to the last stage and surviving is no mean feat! I remember the original like it was yesterday. Subsequently, this was a phenomenal trip down memory lane. Not only does it look and sound great, but it is a joy to play. Accordingly, I love it and recommend buying it here! Can you become a hero and save the day? Pick your ship, memorise each stage, and pray for a little luck.

Review: WL1 AI lighting

I adore RGB lighting and AI technology. As such, when I was offered another product from Lepro to review, I couldn’t resist! The WL1 AI lighting is an easy way to add flair, colour, and a wow factor to your man/woman cave, office, bar, or bedroom. Alternatively, maybe you want to add a little something to your TV. Well, with this easy-to-use product, you’ll make everyone’s head turn.

These spectacular lights are remarkably easy to use. Yes, you’ll have to read the user manual to get it set up, but that’s just common sense. Once you have the lights installed, you can use Alexa, Google Assistant, or the Lepro app to create a digital home system that brings your world to life.

What’s in the box of the WL1 AI lighting?

  • The box has a vibrant vibe that is great to look at. Furthermore, it is loaded with key information, and it can be recycled.

Technical aspects.

Setting the right mood for your evening is a must. If you are feeling energetic, sad, sombre, or you want to be surprised, the WL1 AI lighting has you covered. If you use the Lepro App, you can tell it how you are feeling, and it’ll get to work. Alternatively, maybe you are playing a violent FPS or a calm visual novel. It would be weird to use juxtaposing lighting to ruin the mood. Luckily, these lights can get things just right and improve your entertainment space.

I spent a while getting into the “digital home” space. Lepro has helped me make the transition, as I own many of their products. My middle daughter, in particular, has a fondness for their products, and her room is lit up like a Christmas tree. Thankfully, the use of Alexa or the Lepro App allows me to switch off lights, adjust settings, and play with the mood with the touch of a button. This is impressive, especially if you are out of the house.

This feature is also great if you are away on holiday. Security is a must, and you can ensure that your lights go on and off when no one is home. I used this whenever I was camping out on family vacations. Although it was a waste of electricity, I appreciated the peace of mind.

Build quality.

Lepro doesn’t produce poor-quality products. Instead, you know that every item is built to last. The WL1 AI lighting is no different. The plastic connectors, wall mounts, and individual pieces are incredibly durable. Moreover, I love the fact that you can create unique patterns and expand the base set by ordering an additional set. 

The plastic connectors are a little tricky at first, and opening the box can be somewhat daunting. However, each element is hard-wearing, and a little guidance helps you to put everything together with ease. I tested multiple shapes before arriving at my final design. As such, assembling and disassembling it does not impact the durability of any of the key components.

Usability.

I’ve mentioned the Lepro app and many of its key elements. However, I haven’t mentioned the scheduling feature, the music sync element, or the DIY lighting design. Although some of these elements won’t interest you, I was impressed by how easy everything was to play with. Moreover, some of the features are extremely useful, even if you don’t realise it.

The scheduling ties in with the security elements. Users can select when they want the device to switch on. Moreover, you can select a gradual dim or lighting effect to wake you up in a gentle fashion. The music sync will appeal to gamers and lovers of cinematography. As loud noises, music, and key moments unfold, the WL1 AI lighting will react. This generates a spectacular visual display that will blow away anyone who watches.

Finally, the custom lighting is unnecessary but fun. Creating different patterns or letting your kids go crazy was a joy to watch. You can create a simple pattern that appears on your light. Moreover, you can add special effects to make the device pulse, wave, flow, and so forth. This creates an impressive light display that brings vibrancy to each room.

Is the WL1 AI lighting worth it?

RGB lighting is just one element of the WL1 AI lighting from Lepro. If that isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy every key feature. Furthermore, you can make your house feel more secure, and you can wake up or go to sleep with the gradual lighting effect. On top of this, I love the app, the incredible build quality, and how versatile this particular lighting product is. Accordingly, these lights are fantastic and I recommend buying them here!

Review: PD200W hybrid microphone

The PD200W hybrid microphone is the perfect option for gamers, content creators, and pros. Moreover, it is versatile, easy to use, and it combines a smooth professional black livery with stylish RGB. The result is a device that pops during streaming and content creation.

Alongside this, the microphone captures incredible voice recordings. I used it for my YouTube audio, and I was impressed by the crisp and clean recording. Furthermore, I used it during PC gaming, and my teammates loved the clarity of my voice and the lack of static or interference.

If you desire versatility, this microphone from Maono should be on your radar. It utilises 3 connectivity options and a plug-and-play design. A USB-C cable, wireless dongle, or XLR connection can be selected. I tested each for this review, and was impressed by each option.

What’s in the box of the PD200W hybrid microphone?

  • The packaging is alluring and interesting. Furthermore, it’s robust and recyclable. 
  • The PD200W hybrid microphone is nicely balanced. It has some simple buttons and easy-to-access ports and switches. 
  • A USB-C cable helps you connect and charge the device. 
  • The wireless USB-C dongle is compact and lightweight. 
  • A stand and base can be used instead of a boom arm. 
  • Learn the fundamentals with the user manual.

Technical aspects. 

This dynamic microphone has a massive 60m range. Now, I didn’t test this distance as my house isn’t big enough. However, I was able to push around 10m, and the microphone worked perfectly. There was no distortion, and the connection was stable with no interference. I’d argue that 60m could be extreme if you consider poor weather, solid obstacles, and other environmental challenges.

I do not podcast or interview, as such I didn’t take advantage of the ability to separate multiple voice recordings. This feature speeds up editing and will be a lifesaver if you have rowdy groups talking over one another.

Build quality. 

This is the first Maono product I’ve reviewed. Accordingly, I didn’t know what to expect. It was refreshing to have an affordable product that has high-quality materials. Furthermore, the tactile switches and ports are well-positioned and sturdy. 

The PD200W hybrid microphone has a built-in pop filter and a removable metal stand. The stand can be adjusted, and this improves posture and the accuracy of each recording. I tested this with the stand and my boom arm, and it was a joy to use. The stand is well balanced, and the hinges and locking points ensure that the boom arm is easy to adjust.

This microphone only comes in black. The RGB lighting complements this professional edge. If you wish to switch that off, you can. As such, this is as vibrant or as stealthy as you like.

Review: EARTH VS MARS

The Martians have attacked our beautiful planet and Earthlings are tasked with protecting our home. So the battle between Earth and Mars begins.

STORY OF EARTH VS MARS

The premise is pretty self explanatory if you read the title of the game. Earth is at war as the Martians invade. It’s a tale told many a time where humanity struggles to come to terms with the technology of their intelligent enemies.

That’s where the Splice-O-Tron comes in. For story and gameplay, this splicing ability benefits the game. Humans have discovered how to meld humans with creatures, such as a cheetah, to give a super soldier the elite speed a cheetah would possess or even a rhino for its prowess of strength. As you splice your infantry, they become stronger and more specialised in what they can excel at. These super soldiers can be mixed and matched, so a leg may belong to a cheetah, but the arm above belongs to the DNA of a fly. Maybe not ideal for the soldier, but it sure makes them more interesting to play as.

The style is slickly presented and well voice acted to boot. Characters tend to be a bit too talkative, but it’s a forgivable trait as it does enforce a bit of humour that the otherwise serious story would entail.

GAMEPLAY THAT ISN’T OUT OF THIS WORLD

Turn-based strategy games aren’t for everyone due to the slow process and thoughtful decision-making needed. And this won’t appeal to gamers who don’t dabble in the genre. The combat is basic. I wish there was more to say. High terrain doesn’t gain any advantage; attacking from behind makes no difference or bonus. Mostly the goal is to just attack first. Which feels like it takes away from the actual strategy element. Every time you attack, there is a little cutscene of your soldiers or tanks fighting the Martians. The first few times it’s fine, although after a while it just feels like a time waster when there are so many infantry to take down.

Upgrading does improve combat and changes the gameplay enough to not be a replica of the battle before, however, it never changed it enough for me to be really invested or to get the player thinking.

Unfortunately, EARTH VS MARS hasn’t got off to the best start. With low numbers as of review, the multiplayer is poorly populated. Which is a shame, as other players would pose a fun challenge compared to the story missions.

One of the best implementations is the level builder. It’s easy and simple to use, which is all you can ask for when designing a map of your choice.

CONCLUSION

EARTH VS MARS is a solid strategy game. But that’s mostly it. It doesn’t add any interesting characteristics that we haven’t seen before, and it takes few risks with its gameplay. After a while, I did find myself wanting to play a different strategy game, one that really makes me think and one that doesn’t take an absurd amount of time to show the damage being committed to enemy combatants. In the end, Earth VS MARS doesn’t do much wrong; on a different side of the same coin, it doesn’t do too much great either to separate itself from an ever-competitive genre.

Princess of the Water Lilies is an adorable experience that will not punish you. Instead, you’ll enjoy a captivating world that is filled with cute animals, fun puzzles, and some interesting platforming moments. The result is a modern title that has a delightful old-school edge. Additionally, although the story is a little unusual, you’ll fall for its colourful and wholesome charms.

This crisp 2D platformer was developed by Whyknot Studio and published by Red Dunes Games. It is a single-player affair, and it has a semi-open world to explore. However, the core action is reasonably linear. This wasn’t a complaint, as I like the guidance and the lack of Metroidvania gameplay.

Princess of the Water Lilies tells a bizarre plot.

You play the role of a brave kitten. This furry beast washed up in a box and was rescued by a family of frogs. As the kitten grows, it becomes a guardian for its frog family. Moreover, it is gifted with a magic collar that helps it execute some interesting special abilities.

Like its peers, Princess of the Water Lilies has some familiar core mechanics. The protagonist must leap chasms, overcome traps, and avoid monsters. However, it is the magical collar that makes this stand out from the pack. As the kitten purrs, they can make creatures move, vines grow, and mushrooms follow them. On top of this, the kitten can breathe underwater thanks to a magical diving helmet. In short, this platform game has a nice, outlandish fantasy edge.

Short levels.

The action traverses many biomes. Each area has its obstacles, puzzles, and monsters to overcome. Additionally, you’ll use the magical collar to empower different creatures. Although there was limited variety in each area, there was enough to keep you entertained throughout.

Alongside this, there are some interesting, but occasionally clunky boss encounters. The developer has created a tethering element for each boss. I understand why this design choice was incorporated, but it creates a horribly clunky and restrictive approach to each main battle. If you can cope with this bizarre design choice, the boss battles are fun and tricky while adding some fresh ideas to the well-trodden gameplay.

Princess of the Water Lilies looks amazing.

Despite the familiar and clunky elements, Princess of the Water Lilies looks fantastic. The developer has created an unbelievably crisp game with clean characters, vibrant assets, and interesting backdrops. Moreover, it has a smooth and consistent frame rate with limited visual issues. Consequently, it is a joy to play.

The audio is a delightful mixture of drama and energy. The upbeat elements are uplifting and thrilling, whereas the dramatic sounds are reserved for the cruellest of moments. This deliberate choice helps to break up the repetitive action. The result is an interesting game that keeps you going.

Simple controls.

If you’ve played any game from this genre, you’ll master it in no time. The control layout is simple to understand, and you can play with a keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. I picked the latter, and the action, controls, and story flowed smoothly.

If you’re a completionist, Princess of the Water Lilies will keep you busy for hours. However, if you like to rush through the action, you’ll invest around 5 hours. I sat somewhere in the middle as I searched for every hidden location and golden orb. Subsequently, I invested around 8 hours to see the final credits roll.

Princess of the Water Lilies is a good indie experience.

Princess of the Water Lilies doesn’t break the mould. However, it offers some fresh ideas in a well-trodden genre. I loved the protagonist, the frog family, and the sense of drama. Additionally, the lack of Metroidvania elements was a great choice. Accordingly, I think it’s good and I recommend buying it here! Can you help your frog family? The Ear-Clip Pro earbuds from Acefast are a revolutionary product. Not only do they offer a secure over-ear fitment, but they also deliver impressive audio. Unlike some of its peers, this product offers immersive sound and full situational awareness. Accordingly, they are great for audiophiles and athletes.

The unusual clip-over-ear design won’t be for everyone. However, I enjoyed its strong and rugged nature. Alongside this, the battery life is impressive, and the earbuds are built to last. Created with versatility in mind, the Ear-Clip Pro earbuds are ideal for music lovers and those who need to chat on the move. As such, they have appealing functionality.

Technical aspects. 

The Ear-Clip Pro earbuds use Bluetooth 5.4 functionality for a stable connection. Delivering 10 metres of range, these earbuds are perfect for those who like to walk and talk. Alongside this, there is a low power draw to maximise the battery potential. 

If you have your music set at 50%, you’ll enjoy 7 hours of your favourite songs per charge. Alternatively, 5 hours of talk time can be enjoyed. If you run out of juice, the supplied case can get you up and running in around an hour. This charging case provides an additional 28 hours of power. Therefore, you’ll enjoy up to 35 hours of power. 

Alongside this, the Ear-Clip Pro earbuds utilise AI noise reduction. This may not appeal to everyone, but I enjoyed crisper and quieter phone calls as environmental sounds are reduced. 

Sound quality. 

Phone calls were not my priority, but the aforementioned AI noise reduction worked extremely well. Although it wasn’t perfect in high traffic areas, every phone call was clean, crisp, and easy to listen to. This makes these earbuds ideal for anyone who needs to take calls on the move. 

Phone calls to one side, the music quality is fantastic! The upgraded AELC 2.0 generates a solid soundscape. The bass is strong, balanced, and pleasant to hear. Furthermore, the range of tones is extremely easy to pick out. It didn’t stumble or falter if I cranked up the volume. The overall audio quality was warm, balanced, and pleasant to listen to. No matter the scenario or location, this device never let me down. Accordingly, the Ear-Clip Pro earbuds are ideal for music-lovers, walkers, and athletes.

Build quality.

Water-resistant status is a must. Thankfully, these earbuds have an IP54 rating. This is ideal for walkers and sports lovers. The case withstands heavy showers, sweat, and dust. Furthermore, they can be wiped clean with ease. 

The clip design is a little unusual. Hooking them behind your ear takes a little practice, but they are ridiculously comfortable once they are fitted. Unlike other earbuds, this has no moving parts. Consequently, they are durable and built to last. 

Finally, the charging case is compact yet sturdy. The hinges are robust, and the case feels pleasant to hold. Each earbud sits snugly in the case, and the charging port is well-positioned. 

Are the Ear-Clip Pro earbuds worth it?

Acefast has done a great job with its latest product. The Ear-Clip Pro earbuds deliver balanced audio, exceptional microphone pick up, and durable build quality. Moreover, the battery life is good, and they are reassuringly comfortable to wear. Accordingly, I love them and recommend buying them here!

Review: VORON: Raven’s Story

VORON: Raven’s Story is a game, shockingly, all about birds. That means I, once again, get to spew random bird related anecdotes before getting into the actual review. Just scroll until you see the first header. Anyway, my actual favourite bird is the Pied Wagtail. Little bobbing fellas, that I used to see out of the window at my first job. I worked as a document scanner, so was just feeding papers into a machine from nine to five. They kept me sane.

If I had to pick a family of birds as a favourite, though, it would be corvidae. And I’m not just saying that to desperately bring it back around to VORON. They look cool, for one. Especially if you’re into goth chic. They’re also pretty smart, and can remember faces, which is cool and slightly unnerving. They also filter though mythology a lot, particularly Norse, and have a lot of dark omens about them. Crows aren’t called ‘Carrion Crows’ for nothing. VORON embraces a lot of this stuff, though it gets a bit too lost in it at times.

VORON

Raven Mad

I promise I’ll talk about the game now. VORON: Raven’s Story follows a family of ravens. You start off as a little chick, just barely able to walk, before learning to fly and growing into a fine adult. Once you’re all grown up, your family decides to fly to the World of the Gods. We’re in Norse mythology here, and Odin has a love for ravens. Unfortunately, the world serpent Jormungandr has other ideas, and blasts the family apart. Our little raven picks himself up, and learns to fly again with the help of a special feather. He sets off to locate his family’s souls, and make his way to the World of the Gods.

When playing as a bird, the first question is going to be: how are the flying controls? VORON does well in this aspect. We fly where the camera is pointing, so going up and down feels smooth. We can accelerate and decelerate easily and, crucially, we can hover for a little while, so it’s possible to actually see things. Simply gliding forward over the landscape feels great. Landing is a bit of a faff though, as sometimes our little bird will refuse to stop. Half the time, it was quicker just to smack into things, causing the raven to ragdoll to the ground. Not as majestic, but quite funny to watch.

VORON

On The Wing

VORON‘s main gameplay loop is split between flying around the overworld, and completing puzzle sections. The puzzles do well at wringing out the flying mechanics. They start off with simple switch puzzles, but later on we need to fly through gates and hit targets in time limits. The nice flying mechanics make them fun, but they’re a bit limited. The only brain-scratchers come at the very start, whereas the gate puzzles feel strangely easy. Flying is limited by a stamina bar, but we can extend this with some easy-to-find secrets, so the bottom drops out of things a bit.

The overworld suffers from a similar problem: a nice central idea that’s left unexplored. Essentially, to find our family, we need to collect and save lost souls. These take the form of side-quests, scattered around a series of small overworlds. They have a lot of potential. One has you following the soul of a man slowly remembering how he lost his family. That was quite heartfelt stuff. But the first island is the only one with multiple actual quests. The last one just has a bunch of blue people that you fly into to collect. There was a lot of potential to breathe life into the world, but it was sadly underutilised.

VORON

VORON – Gorgeous Yet Limited

Lastly, if the screenshots didn’t convey it, VORON is beautiful. Right after booting it up, you’re assaulted by a wave of bright colours. It’s almost too much. If you go and stick your beak right into the textures, you might notice some limitations (like grass that magically disappears), but when you’re in the air? It’s like flying through a painting. I love it. Each region is visually distinct too. Given that we spend a lot time flapping from place-to-place, beautiful scenery was a necessity.

There’s also this underlying current of Norse mythology that weaves everything together. It’s mostly told through text dumps, but we get to fight Jorgumandr at the end, which is nice. Still, it’s worth mentioning that VORON is rather short, clocking in at three hours. I enjoyed my time with it, though. The nice flying controls, and pleasant graphics and atmosphere kept me engaged. While I don’t think it pushes its world as far as it could have done, VORON is an experience that feels pleasant and heartfelt.
