Microsoft has announced that they are rolling MIX into other events starting in 2012.  Here is the blog post:

Thinking About Developer Events

At the beginning of each year, many of us assess how we (and our developer community) might want to invest our respective time and resources for the year ahead, and we’ve devoted some of that energy in the past few months toward thinking about the various developer conferences we host.

As part of that reflection, we have decided to merge MIX, our spring web conference for developers and designers, into our next major developer conference, which we will host sometime in the coming year. I know a number of folks were wondering about MIX, given the time of year, so we wanted to make sure there’s no ambiguity, and be very clear… there will be no MIX 2012.

For context, the idea to create MIX was conceived in the fall of 2005, literally as the PDC05 main stage was being disassembled after the final keynote. While we reflected on that PDC, there was a lot of discussion around our engagement with the web community, and how we needed a more focused effort around our upcoming plans for Internet Explorer, the roadmap for our web platform, the work we were starting on web standards (we were shipping IE6 at the time), and so on. MIX06 was held about four months later in Las Vegas, and has been there ever since. A lot of great things subsequently happened in and around MIX in the six years that followed, but there have been a couple of slow and steady trends that have brought us to this point.

Firstly, the notion that the “web community” is somehow separate and distinct from the community of developers we care about no longer makes any sense. Some had even called out the existence of a separate web event as proof that we don’t “get” the web… it’s a fair point… when we get developers together to talk about what we’re doing in the platform, the web discussion should be part and parcel to everything we talk about.

Secondly, we got a lot of feedback. Developers were confused, and asking us about which event to go to. Reporters, analysts and tech bloggers were trying to manage “event fatigue”, and asked us the same question. And something that was more behind the scenes but very relevant to the time management aspect relates to our engineering teams. If you’ve gone to a Microsoft developer event, you know that a non-trivial percentage of speakers and participants are from engineering. They take time out from shipping to prepare for and travel to these events and connect with developers, and their time is one of the most valuable resources we have in the company. We want to be more efficient with that resource, as the engineering/community interaction is what brings developers to our events.

So what happens going forward? As we look ahead to 2012 and beyond, the goal is to ensure that global Microsoft developer events are of the caliber that many of you experienced at BUILD last September, in addition to the thousands of online and local developer events we host around the world to support communities and connect directly with developers. We will share more details of our next developer event later this year. In the meantime, know that we are we are hard at work and will look forward to seeing many of you there.

Microsoft Talks About Windows 8 Sensors

In the next articles on Building Windows 8, Microsoft talk about sensors and the ability for Windows 8 to react to a variety of different changes.

windows 8 sensors

This is the introduction to the article:

Recent advances in sensor technology are catalysts for the acceleration and evolution of user experiences on PCs. The ability to react to changes in ambient light, motion, human proximity, and location are becoming common and essential elements of the computing experience. Even something simple—like an ambient light sensor to adjust display brightness in a room with changing light—is potentially a basic scenario for desktop PCs. Of course, we also want to make sure you have full control over the use of these peripherals, since we know that different sensors leave open opportunities for risk or abuse that some folks might not be comfortable with. This post looks at the details of supporting sensors in Windows 8 and was authored by Gavin Gear, a PM on the Device Connectivity team.

The NSZ-GP9 should be hitting the UK later this year!

NSZ-GS7 Network Media Player

There was also the NSZ-GS7 network media player, which also has the same remote control.

TV’s

One thing Sony were not showing at CES were any new TV’s powered by Google TV. Whether that is because they are not going to produce anymore or that they just were not ready is up for debate. I say this because Google announced at CES that Sony was one of their partners for Google TV and they would have new kit later in 2012.

CES 2012 – Windows Phones Everywhere

One of the things you couldn’t miss at CES 2012 was Windows Phones, and Microsoft were letting you play with them!

Boxee 1.5 Rolls Out and Boxee Live TV Dongle Available Now

Boxee have started rolling out the Boxee 1.5 update and their Live TV Dongle is now available to buy.

LiveTV-Dongle-1-500x269

The Boxee Live TV Dongle is shipping for under $50, however there is no news about a UK or European version at this time. Hopefully there will be one very soon!

This is what Boxee posted:

With the addition of Live TV, the Boxee Box holds the distinction of being the only mainstream set top box that blends both over the air (OTA) broadcast TV with Internet content (over the top or OTT). We believe the OTT+OTA combo is the best way to get the most entertainment while paying only for the stuff you want to watch.

If you missed our earlier posts on Live TV / Cutting the Cord, and our Facebook integration – the gist goes something like this: the way we want to watch video has drastically changed over the last 10 years. We want to devour seasons all at once. We want to watch the same video on our TV, tablet, phone, and treadmill. We want to be able to watch in our homes, on an airplane, in our offices, and wherever else we might end up. We want to bookmark things for later. We want mainstream shows along with stuff from the web like TED, WSJ, and FunnyOrDie.

The web has given us this freedom. Cable TV has not. The web has made it easy and affordable to find what you’re looking for and enjoy it wherever you’d like. Meanwhile cable’s pushing the same boring interface and charging you even more for it ($75 / month on average) while you’re really only watching 14% of the channels you’re paying for. There’s a percentage of the population that’s realized this and decided to cut the cord and get rid of cable.

Boxee Live TV is a perfect alternative to cable for them.

Live TV Features

Way better than just plugging an antenna into the back of your TV, Boxee Live TV kicks it up a notch with:

  • Social Channel Listings – We’ll show you what’s on, what your friends are watching, and how many people total are watching a show as you flip through channels.
  • Sharing – Share the traditional Boxee way on Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr AND you can now passively share to Facebook using our Live TV Timeline App – turn sharing on and whatever you’re tuned into will post to your Facebook ticker automatically. It’s easy to switch off too so your friends don’t need to know about your addiction to HSN.
  • Edit Channels – Quickly hide channels from your lineup that don’t speak your language or have pissed you off with bad programming decisions like taking Arrested Development off the air. Easily rename WNDHCTA 7.2 to NBC.
  • All-In-One Interface – done watching a show on broadcast, easily jump into more episodes from the web. It’s the best of both worlds all on the same remote.

While Live TV does not currently have DVR functionality, we’ve heard your feedback and are examining if we could provide it. We’ll make an announcement later this year about DVR support if we can make it happen.

Boxee v1.5 Features

Here’s what’s included in the latest version of Boxee (check out pictures here):

  • New UI look and feel
  • Improved search
  • New library screens with simpler filtering
  • Browser Pop-up management
  • Rotten Tomatoes integration
  • On-Device Social Account Pairing

We’ll stagger this release over the next 72 hours like we’ve done in the past so you might not get the update until later this week. Want it right away, check out these instructions in the forums on how to get it.

TomTom Provides Real-Time Traffic Information to AA Website

TomTom wins exclusive deal to deliver real-time traffic information to the Automobile Association website.

TomTom AA partnership 2

TomTom announces a partnership with the AA which will provide the most accurate real-time traffic information for the AA’s Traffic News website.   The AA website will now include TomTom HD Traffic data, which provides a live view of road conditions and areas of congestion, enabling consumers to better plan their journeys:

TomTom HD Traffic creates a picture of traffic conditions as they evolve.  HD Traffic contains information from multiple data sources, including connected navigation devices, mobile phones, road sensors and real time incident data.  TomTom combines this anonymous information to produce real time traffic products using proprietary and tested methods.

Updates are provided every minute ensuring the AA’s customers are fully aware of the current road conditions before they start their travel.  TomTom HD Traffic provides comprehensive coverage across the UK.

With TomTom HD Traffic, the AA is safe in the knowledge that its users can accurately plan their journeys and be fully aware of the most up-to-date conditions on their routes,” said Charles Cautley, Managing Director of TomTom Automotive and Licensing.  “We believe that by partnering with the AA, TomTom is making it possible to more efficiently use the road network and reduce traffic congestion in the UK.”

We are focused on helping drivers prepare for their journeys by using the most up-to-date traffic information available to ensure they are not caught by surprise with traffic incidents or significant congestion,” said Steve Wing of the AA.  “We trust that by equipping drivers with TomTom HD Traffic, they will have both a more positive navigation experience and a faster and safer journey.

Microsoft Bing Charity Campaign Day 2 – Lifelites

This week, Microsoft’s search engine – Bing – will showcase the work of five small UK charities, enabling each cause to talk about the valuable contribution they are making to the communities they work in.

The second of the five charities to appear on the Bing Homepage (today) is Lifelites. Lifelites started out as a pilot project in 1999 with the idea of providing education and entertainment technology for children in hospices.  Since then, its work has expanded to meet the growing demand from the growing network of children’s hospices (currently 40) in England, Wales and Scotland, serving around 5,000 children and their families. For many children in these hospices, modified computers and other entertainment platforms enable them to play and interact with their families for the first time – technology for good!

Bing Charity Day 2

Additional information about the challenges that these charities seek to tackle are available by clicking on the Bing homepage hotspots. You can also watch in-depth videos with the founders and staff and find out more about each cause, including details of how you can make a donation or help, by visiting www.bing.com/HelpYourBritain.

The five charities featured throughout the week will mark the start of a longer on-going campaign, with Bing handing over its Homepage to a new UK charity on the final Friday of every month. This is where Bing users have the opportunity to nominate a charity that they would like to see featured on the Bing homepage by submitting entries via the Help Your Britain page on Bing.com.

Win a Hard Drive with ioSafe’s Doomsday Contest and Apocalypse-proof Your Data

ioSafe are running a competition to win a hard drive in what they are calling their Doomsday Contest!

Apocalypse3

This is what they said (and of course their hard drive could not withstand Chuck Norris!):

The end is nigh! Well, maybe …

There are reports of weird noises being heard all over the world. An article at Sync.ca has a clip of the strange sounds and lists a number of possible explanations:

  • A by-product of the HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) which Wikipedia describes as being, “an ionospheric research program jointly funded by the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, the University of Alaska, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).”
  • The effects of spacequakes
  • A marketing campaign for an upcoming film
  • A marketing campaign for an upcoming video game
  • Aliens/UFO
  • Caused from solar flares
  • Phenomenon involving thunder

There are, of course, a wide range of other theories out there too. Some say the noise is the tooting of the seven trumpets marking the start of a series of increasingly catastrophic events; others say it’s the cries of a slowly dying earth, the sound of a geomagnetic reversal or the howls from an approaching army of marauding sasquatches.

Whatever the source the noises may be, one thing is for sure: if an extinction-level event is just around the corner, you’ll want to make sure that your data is backed up on an apocalypse-proof1 ioSafe – and you could win one, easy!

Yes, that’s right, you could win a super-tough 500GB ioSafe Rugged Portable to protect your data from whatever 2012 may bring! To enter, all you need do is leave a comment saying what you think is causing the strange noises. The contest will remain open for the next six weeks at the end of which a winner will be randomly selected from the correct entries. If the noises remain a mystery after six weeks, the winner will be randomly selected from all the entries.

Good luck!

1 Note to humorless and overly-litigious readers: this post is tongue-in-cheek. We have not field-tested our products against geomagnetic reversals, black holes, marauding sasquatches, Chuck Norris or hellfire and make no claims that they will survive these or similar doomsday scenarios.

StableBit DrivePool Moves to Beta M4 Build 5536

There has been another beta build from CoveCube! StableBit development marches on – now its beta M4 build 5536.

600px-Stablebit_drivepool_screen_thu16

Here is how CoveCube describes this application:

  • Combine all your hard drives into one big storage pool (except the system drive with the OS).
  • Add and remove drives from the pool at any time without re-partitioning or manually moving folders.
  • Create duplicated folders on the storage drive pool that are protected against single drive failure. If a drive fails on which a duplicated file was stored, the contents of that file will remain readable even without the drive.
  • All your data is stored in standard NTFS files. You can always access your files even if the Windows Home Server completely crashes or this add-in can’t be used.

This version’s change log:

1.0.0.5536 ———-

* [D] Changed driver load order to address disappearing shares on reboot.

* [D] Fixed timestamp issue in disk driver. Was preventing installation from going through on some systems.

* Added new Drives sub-tab under the DrivePool tab. Shows disk space usage on all pooled drives.

Microsoft Names Another Defendant in Kelihos Botnet Case

Microsoft has been pretty dogged in pursuing botnet operators, and they recently announced a new defendant in the Kelihos botnet case.  Read on for details!

logo_mslogo-h_web

Microsoft has been pursuing botnet operators in courts around the world in order to take them down and to make the internet a little safer for all of us.  Today, they announced progress in the case against the Kelihos botnet.  Here is what they had to say:

Microsoft Names New Defendant in Kelihos Case

Since taking down the Kelihos botnet with our partners Kyrus Inc. and Kaspersky Labs in September, the Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit has continued to actively investigate the case and pursue new leads with the goal of holding the perpetrators behind the botnet accountable for their actions.

In an amended complaint filed today with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Microsoft alleges that Andrey N. Sabelnikov, a citizen of Russia, is responsible for the operations of the Kelihos botnet.

Mr. Sabelnikov is not the first to be named as a defendant in this case, which has already served as the legal foundation for the successful disruption of a global botnet harming thousands of victims worldwide. In the original complaint filed in September, Microsoft alleged that Dominique Alexander Piatti, dotFREE Group SRO and John Does 1-22 owned a domain cz.cc and used cz.cc to register other subdomains such as lewgdooi.cz.cc used to operate and control the Kelihos botnet.

Our investigation showed that while some of the defendants’ subdomains may have been legitimate, many were being used for questionable purposes with links to a variety of disreputable online activities. On Oct. 26, we successfully settled with defendants Dominique Alexander Piatti and dotFREE Group, allowing us to dismiss the case against them. Today, thanks to their cooperation and new evidence, we have named a new defendant to the civil lawsuit we believe to be the operator of the Kelihos botnet.

In today’s complaint, Microsoft presented evidence to the court that Mr. Sabelnikov wrote the code for and either created, or participated in creating, the Kelihos malware. Further, the complaint alleges that he used the malware to control, operate, maintain and grow the Kelihos botnet. These allegations are based on evidence Microsoft investigators uncovered while analyzing the Kelihos malware. Microsoft also alleges that Mr. Sabelnikov registered more than 3,700 “cz.cc” subdomains from Mr. Piatti and dotFREE Group SRO, and misused those subdomains to operate and control the Kelihos botnet.

All of Microsoft’s legal filings and evidence in this case can be found at http://www.noticeofpleadings.com. Microsoft is committed to following the evidence wherever it leads us through the investigation in order to hold Kelihos’ operators accountable for their actions. We believe this is important both because of the harm caused by Kelihos and because all botnet operators should understand that there are risks and consequences for engaging in malicious activity.

We also remain committed to taking what we learn from takedown operations such as these to help better arm the ‘good guys’ in protecting people from the threat. We continue to explore ways to make the information learned from our takedowns more readily available to others who can take action to address infections in a more systematic and automated manner. Our objective is to effectively put information and tools into the hands of those that can help protect innocent computer users. We will continue to drive innovation towards this end as long as botnets continue to victimize society.

Although the Kelihos botnet remains inactive since the successful takedown in September, thousands of computers are still infected with its malware. Please visit support.microsoft.com/botnets for free information and tools to clean your computer from malicious software, and visit http://www.microsoft.com/security for more information on online safety and security.

This case is certainly not over. Look for more updates as the Kelihos investigation and Microsoft’s overall fight to disrupt botnets continue. You can also follow the Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit on Facebook and Twitter.

Microsoft is certainly doing its part to fight botnets!
