By the end of next month, customers of the BBC and ITV-backed satellite TV service will get access to YouTube via the Freesat programming guide.

They will be able to watch a range of user-generated content, and  videos from the original channels introduced to YouTube over the past year.

YouTube is already available on Virgin Media’s TiVo service and a range  of connected TV sets, but this is the first time that it has been officially offered on a subscription-free UK television platform.

Freesat managing  director Emma Scott said: “Today’s great news is a testament to our ongoing  commitment to delivering genuine viewer choice.”

YouTube product  marketing manager Peter Sherman added: “We’re happy to be working with Freesat so that Freesat users can now access YouTube from the platform.

“Our  creator community is developing quality content that will delight and inspire  viewers and we’re pleased to be able to bring it to people in new ways.”

Also today, Freesat reported passing 3 million sales of receiver equipment since  its launch in 2008, generating more than £1 billion in revenue.

Freesat added 55,000 new households in the third quarter of 2012, a rate of growth  faster than satellite TV rival Sky (25,000) and pay-TV service BT Vision  (20,000) over the same period.

Preview of BioShock Infinite from 2K Games and Irrational Games

cityinthesky__ONLINE_wideuse

We recently had the opportunity to play the first few hours of 2K Games forthcoming BioShock Infinite, developed by Irrational Games – is it a worthy successor to the previous BioShock games – read on to find out what we thought.

In BioShock Infinite, you play Booker DeWitt, a former Pinkerton agent who is sent to the flying city of Columbia in 1912 to rescue a girl who has been imprisoned since childhood. He is not there by choice, he owes big on some debts and this is his last chance to make good on them. I’m not going to say much more about Columbia in this preview as I don’t want to spoil it!

The first thing I noticed was the effect of the rain hitting the water – it was amazing with a lot of detail added that really made you believe you were there.

welcome_ONLINE

When you are walking around Columbia you pass by many of its inhabitants. Most of these (certainly in the early part of the game I played) cannot be directly interacted with, however they often say hello, or you can just listen to them talking. There are also kinetoscopes placed around Columbia that you can use to learn interesting facts about Columbia and your surroundings. It is certainly worth taking the time to use them as it really adds to the atmosphere of the game.

Currency in the game is in the form of silver eagles. You can find these, and other provisions in boxes and trash cans, and all manner of other places. Currency is important, not just for buying provisions but also for when you get killed, more on that in a moment.

There are also vending machines that you can use to buy items you are in need of, including ammunition, food and salt.

You may be asking why salt? Salt is used to power your Vigors and Vigors are a very important part of the game. Throughout the game you obtain new Vigors such as the Devils Kiss (which shoots fire at your enemies and burns them alive) and the Murder of Crows (which unleashes a flock of murderous birds against your enemies) and these can be used in conjunction with whatever other weapons you have. It appears that you can only have two Vigors at any one time, although this might just have been the way I was playing. Certainly I would like the ability to keep hold of all my Vigors if possible, but then what would be the fun in that?

When you obtain a new Vigor, usually after defeating its current owner, its abilities are explained to you in the form of a short old style film, which fits into the time period of the game whilst at the same time demonstrating, often graphically, just what it does.

Talking of other weapons, you also obtain a Skyhook early on in the game and its placed on your left arm that can not only be used for killing people (sometimes in a very graphic way) but is also used to jump between levels via its magnetic properties. You even use the hook to attach to Columbia’s Sky-Line system in order to navigate your way around.

bwcombat_ONLINE

When you get killed, and I only got killed a few times thankfully, you come back, less some silver eagles, but your enemies also get a health boost, which certainly makes it more interesting.

From the start of the game you are searching for “the girl” and it’s a good 90 minutes or so before you actually find her. Her name is Elizabeth and she will be your companion throughout the remainder of the game. She is also there to help you, and scavenge for you, and even fight enemies with you. She also has some pretty amazing powers such the ability to open rifts in time (early on she opens a rift to Paris in 1985 where a cinema is shown playing Revenge of the Jedi). Again, for this preview I am not going to reveal anymore as I really don’t want to spoil it.

lizbook_ONLINE

There are also optional side quests throughout the game, and it is up to you whether you do them or not. If you do them, you will be rewarded with valuable resources that will aid you on your adventure.

There are times in the game that really remind me of playing Borderlands 2 – primarily in the fight sequences. You shoot at someone or something and you watch the numbers float up with the amount of damage done. You also have a rechargeable shield (eventually). The fight sequences work well and for the most part the enemies are fairly intuitive.

From my few hours playing BioShock Infinite one thing was certain and that was this it is a worthy successor, and that I would be visiting Columbia again very soon as there is still so much to see and do, not to mention I want to learn more about Elizabeth and what she is capable of. What about you, care to join me?

BioShock Infinite will be released on March 26th for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC and looks to be one of the best games of the year so far.

Review: Acoustic Research 808 Headphones

Voxx International was nice enough to send on some Acoustic Research 808 headphones for me to review; here are my impressions!

HPA88BKG_1

Voxx International was nice enough to send on some Acoustic Research 808 headphones for me to review.  The Acoustic Research 808 line is intended to deliver studio-quality sound but at a more affordable price point.  Do they succeed?  Let’s find out.  I’ll be comparing these to the Beats Solos that we all bought for our vacation to Hawaii in 2011, and which currently list for $199.99 on Amazon.Com and BestBuy.Com.

Product Details

Here is how Voxx describes the product:

The 808 Concept

It’s pretty simple. 808 is all about street smarts, cutting-edge audio technology, and intelligently priced products for the discerning enthusiast. Our goal is to make gear that works as good as it looks. We set out to make stuff that we’d want to use ourselves. No hype. No silly celebrity endorsements. If it says “808” on it, you can trust that it will not only enhance your listening experience – it will let you hear your music like never before.

The 808 Lineup

Our first release is the Over-The-Ear 808 Signature Series. With details like advanced audio drivers, seamless acrylic finish (your choice of three), foldable design, a great-looking carrying case, and two cable styles, these things scream “quality” – inside and out. We’ve also designed an On-Ear Series (the Drift), and an In-Ear Earbud. We’re planning to release those in 2013, so keep an eye out for more new stuff in the months ahead.

We told you about the 808 Over the Ear Headphones as part of our CES coverage here.  Just a reminder for you:

VOXX Accessories Corp. Introduces Its 808 Line of Studio-Quality Headphones
The 808 line brings studio-quality sound and high-performance personal audio to everyone, at affordable prices

LAS VEGAS, NV – JANUARY 7, 2013 – LVCC, CENTER HALL, BOOTH 10404 – VOXX Accessories Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of VOXX International Corp. (NASDAQ: VOXX), announced today the launch of its 808 line of studio-quality, high-performance headphones. 808 headphones break down the walls separating regular consumers from high-performance personal audio by delivering studio-quality materials and engineering without the outrageous price. The 808 full-size over-ear models feature powerful 40mm drivers with outstanding response and accuracy in a foldable design and soft, comfortable earcups. 808 full-size headphones also come with multiple detachable cords and a protective travel case. The complete 808 headphone line will add the 808 Drift on-ear models and the 808 Switch in-ear models with detachable cables to the current over-ear headphone styles later this year.

“There are lots of premium headphones on the market that are high performance works of art, with designs and materials that make them more than just products. Studio-quality sound and performance doesn’t need to cost a lot,” said David Geise, President of Voxx Accessories Corporation. “The majority of high-performance headphones in the market today are walled-off from regular consumers by prohibitively high price tags. With many headphones, consumers are paying a premium that has nothing to do with performance. The 808’s have been engineered to deliver the studio-quality and high performance sound that consumers have come to expect from premium headphones, without the outrageous price.”

The 808 full-size headphones are available in three (3) colors: black matte (HPA88BKM), black high gloss (HPA88BKG), and white high gloss (HPA88WHG). Each 808 full-size headphone features 40mm drivers and a foldable design, with two (2) detachable cables (round without mic and flat with mic) as well as a high-quality soft travel case included. These full-size models will be available this month for an MSRP of $99.99. The On-Ear 808 Drifts and In-Ear 808 Switch headphones will be available in the second quarter of 2013.

And the 808 video to get you acclimated to the product:

Surface Pro Now Available

Microsoft’s Surface Pro is now available.  Read on for details.

surface_04

Microsoft’s Surface Pro is now available.  The Surface Pro is Microsoft’s Core i5 powered tablet form factor PC running full-fledged Windows 8.  Here is the blog post announcing availability:

Today is an exciting day for the growing Surface family: Surface Pro is here!

Surface Windows 8 Pro 64gb is available online or from store shelves at all Microsoft retail stores in the U.S. and Canada, at Staples and Best Buy in the United States and from Best Buy and Future Shop in Canada. Customer response to the launch of Surface Pro has been amazing. We’re working with our retail partners who are currently out of stock of the 128GB Surface Pro to replenish supplies as quickly as possible. Our priority is to ensure that every customer gets their new Surface Pro as soon as possible.

Surface Pro gives you the power and performance of an Intel Core-powered PC in a tablet package. Whether you’re a road warrior looking for the one device to pack or you’re looking for a PC that will get the job done and still help you have fun, this is the device for you.

To go along with your new Surface Pro, you can also pick up a new Wedge Touch Mouse Surface Edition and three new Touch Cover Limited Editions in red, magenta, and cyan which will be available in all markets where Surface is currently sold. Starting today, you can buy a new 64GB standalone version of Surface Windows RT so you can choose a Touch (or Type) Cover of your choice – like one of the Touch Cover Limited Editions I just mentioned!

I’m also excited that as of next Thursday there’ll be 13 more countries in Europe joining the Surface family. On February 14th, we’ll be bringing Surface RT to Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Surface RT and Surface Pro represent countless hours of research, prototyping, experimenting and building an amazing product that really is the ideal stage for Windows 8. Our hope is to share with you here through our blog some of that work in the coming weeks!

Now with the Surface family, you can decide which device best suits your needs. Whether you’re a business professional who needs to use Photoshop while you’re traveling to make edits to a picture, or a blogger wanting a simple and seamless way to update your blog, there’s a Surface for you. Surface Pro, which provides the power and performance of a laptop in a tablet package, is great for taking notes with its pen while you’re sitting in on a meeting and responding quickly to emails while using your Touch Cover (or Type Cover!) keyboard. Surface RT offers the convenience of a tablet with some laptop capabilities. It really is about entertainment first as a tablet with all day battery life all in a package that’s super lightweight.

Well, since I’ve spent some time sharing with you the exciting qualities about Surface Pro, I’m eager for you to get your hands on one. So stop by one of the above mentioned retail stores and check one out for yourself! Oh, and one more thing don’t forget to get yourself a Limited Edition Touch Cover before they’re all gone!

Personally, I am taking on a pass on Surface Pro as the 4-5 hour battery life is a deal breaker.  With recent advances in power efficiency announced by Intel at CES2013, Ii am hoping that the next generation of Surface Pro gets much-improved battery life, so I’ll stick with my current Windows 7 tablet and my Surface RT for now.

“Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in  connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the  internet. Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These  connection problems are intermittent.
