Call of Juarez Gunslinger is out tomorrow and here is our review.

From the dust of a gold mine to the dirt of a saloon, Call of Juarez Gunslinger is a real homage to the Wild West tales and era. Players will live the epic journey of Silas Greaves, a ruthless bounty hunter who spent his life on the trail of the West’s most notorious outlaws. Now it is Silas’ time to tell his story, which is linked to the history of the Wild West era: a mix of myths and historical facts.
Made of memorable encounters with some of the West’s most notorious names such as Pat Garret, Jesse James and Butch Cassidy, the game blurs the lines between man and myth. Call of Juarez Gunslinger lets players live the greatest legends of the Old West.
The game starts off with your character, a bounty hunter by the name Silas Greaves entering a saloon and telling stories his adventures. This gives the player the opportunity to step into Silas’s shoes for each of the various episodes he discusses.
Each episode is either a single story or two parts of a story, all of which are important to the main story. I won’t spoil the main story for you, but it does take place over a number of years while Silas is tracking some men.

The graphics are fairly simple but work well – when you shoot someone there is often a spray of blood but its all very cartoony. There are a few different weapons to choose from, including a pistol, a rifle and a shotgun. My favourite was the Gatling gun but you only get to use that twice during the game. You also have dynamite you can use to wreak large scale damage, and you will need that for some of the harder boss battles.
Each episode ends with a dual – you move your aiming sight over the target to increase your concentration and you have the option of fighting honourably by waiting for your opponent to draw first, or you can shoot him straight away, the choice is yours.
Just to make things more interesting later in the game you dual with more than one opponent, but again I won’t spoil it for you.
As well as the story mode, there is also an arcade mode which enables you to play sections of the game without affecting the story. The aim here is to complete the section as quickly as possible.
There is also a duel mode so that you can keep playing duals over and over again.
As you gain XP throughout the game you also gain skill points. These skill points can be spent to increase various abilities. The choice is yours how you spent them, but select wisely and it does make a difference to how you play the game.

During the game when you kill bad guys you build up concentration. This is shown on the top left of the screen as a gun slowly emerging. When you use concentration mode, time slows and all bad guys are shown on the screen in red giving you a better opportunity to hit them.

There are some annoyances in the game – I had some occasional issues with aiming – the crosshairs showed I was lined up perfectly and yet I would fire and miss. I’m not saying I am the best shot in the west, because I’m not, but some of those shots should have hit their mark and for some reason they just didn’t. Also there are occasional mini-games throughout the game – you have to tap certain buttons or keys in the sequence displayed on the screen in order to shoot targets. These mini-games often appear out of nowhere and more often than note you have already pressed a button before you knew about the game, meaning you fail the mini-game. Most of the time it isn’t a problem because you can then just manually aim and shoot the targets but it can be quite frustrating, especially when you come out of the mini-game no matter what weapon you were using before it started you always go back to the pistol, which often means you get shot before you have had time to change your weapon to whatever you want to use!
When you get killed you start that part of the episode again – and can be another annoyance as there seems to be set places to respawn you, often in the middle of a gun fight and it takes a few seconds for you to get your bearings, often meaning you get shot.

One of the questions I kept getting asked about COJ is whether its open world or not. The answer to that is no, it’s not. There are areas you can roam, however these are fairly small and if you go to far you get told you are leaving the area and you have to go back.
The other regular question is related to Multiplayer – and the simple answer to that is there isn’t multiplayer in the game. I know a lot of people are disappointed by that.
Overall I really enjoyed Call of Jaurez Gunslinger. It’s not a very long game, with the story mode clocking in at around 5 hours, however when you complete it you unlock a new, harder mode called True West to play through. There is also arcade mode and duel mode to play whenever you like. Don’t let the length of the game put you off, for $15 it’s a fun game and you can always play again and again until you find all those Nuggets of Truth and get a perfect score.
Call of Jaurez Gunslinger is published by Ubisoft and is available from May 22nd on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
