The N4S is straightforward to install once you have worked out where you want the cabin and rear cameras to sit, and running the cables along the door frame and roofline is a fairly painless job even if you have not fitted a dash cam before.
The main unit sits neatly behind the rear-view mirror and is fairly compact considering how much it is doing, with the cabin lens rotating so you can point it at the road, the driver or straight down into the footwell depending on what you actually need to cover. The rear camera is small and discreet too and, being IP67 rated, can be mounted outside the vehicle without needing to worry about rain getting into it.
Footage from all three channels is genuinely impressive, with the STARVIS 2 sensors doing a really good job in low light and at night, and the front camera in particular holds onto detail well thanks to the HDR and PlatePix combination – number plates that would normally blur out on a passing car are still readable, which is exactly the point.
The 24/7 parking mode works well too, buffering ten seconds before an event so you actually see what happened rather than just the aftermath, though it is worth knowing you will need the separate hardwire kit if you want proper round-the-clock monitoring rather than relying on the battery alone.
Pairing with the Vantrue app over 5GHz WiFi is quick and lets you download and review clips without pulling the microSD card out, and the smart voice control means you can just say “take a photo” or “turn on WiFi” without taking your hands off the wheel. The built-in GPS logger quietly tracks your route and speed in the background, which is handy if you ever need to back up exactly what happened and where.
If you want to go further there is an optional LTE module that adds cloud connectivity and remote monitoring, so you can check in on the vehicle even when you are nowhere near it.
