Review: Atomic Owl

Atomic Owl blends old-school visuals, high-energy audio, and smooth combat to create a brilliant 2D side-scrolling platformer. Moreover, it takes influence from Dead Cells, Mega Man, and Rogue Legacy. This mixture of well-loved games offers high hopes that this title will be exceptional. However, it doesn’t reach those dizzying heights, and that was slightly disappointing.

This side-scrolling action platformer was developed by Monster Theater and published by Eastasiasoft Limited. It is a single-player game that has Metroidvania-lite mechanics. However, if you love that genre, don’t expect too much in that aspect. I would push it more into the roguelike window, despite the backtracking, exploration, and interconnected areas.

Atomic Owl tells a 4th wall-breaking story.

Atomic Owl should have been a serious experience that is filled with Asian-inspired action. Instead, it often breaks the 4th wall with its witty writing and constant banter with the protagonist’s sword. This sounds bizarre, and in all honesty, it was a little strange. Although it works mostly, some awkward moments fall flat. Consequently, it won’t appeal to everyone’s sense of humour.

You play the role of Hidalgo, a warrior owl who is considered a hero. Sadly, the villain, Omega Wing, ambushes the hero, and he awakens 2 years after this experience. Dazed, confused, and a little angry, he sets out on an adventure where he must save his friends and stop Omega’s plans.

Familiar mechanics.

Atomic Owl asks players to focus on precise jumps, wall climbing, air dashes, gliding, and plenty of overcoming hazard-heavy stages. Each of these elements feels familiar but brilliantly considered. None of them outstays their welcome, and I liked the challenge and the exploration elements. The obstacles were tough, and there were times where practice makes perfect. Subsequently, you’ll need patience to get through the toughest moments.

Where this excels is its impressively smooth melee combat. With an array of weapons to pick from, you must adjust your approach to accommodate each one. They have unique characteristics that must be mastered. Pace, power, and usability must all be understood if you wish to overcome your foes. The combat is improved when you use the hero’s special Void Crow power. This beastly mode is a temporary improvement on your core skills. Additionally, it adds another tactical layer that must be considered.

The roguelike element makes you focus on permanent upgrades and resource collecting. This wasn’t anything new, but I liked how I gradually improved while inching closer to the finish line. If this isn’t your thing, you can select the non-roguelike mode and play this like a traditional side-scrolling platformer.

Atomic Owl looks amazing.

I know gamers want ultra-realistic graphics and something to test modern consoles, but Atomic Owl doesn’t do that. Instead, it has stylish, pixelated visuals, sharp backdrops, and incredible animation. The result is a smooth and easy-to-look-at game that offers interesting and captivating level design.

The audio is a blend of upbeat and aggressive music. The synth music isn’t entirely in keeping with the theme, but I wasn’t too bothered. I liked the energy, the drama, and its fast-paced profile. The sound effects match the OTT and angry music. Each weapon delivers a delightful crushing soundscape that makes every fight come to life.

Smooth controls.

Precision gaming can be a joy if the control system is well considered. Fortunately, Atomic Owl offers a simple-to-understand layout and responsive inputs. Consequently, it is a joy to play and extremely easy to master.

I invested around 7 hours to get through the core gameplay. I haven’t unlocked every achievement, and I have no plans to do so. However, I’d expect to invest around another 2 to 3 hours if I want to find everything and complete the game. This creates a reasonable return for the price.

Atomic Owl is a simple but stylish indie title.

Atomic Owl is a bit of a hybrid experience. Despite its simplicity, I enjoyed the action and the smooth visuals. Moreover, the combat is great, and I liked the selection of weapons on offer. Accordingly, it is good, and I recommend buying it here! Can you find your friends and defeat Omega Wing? Master your skills, explore the world, and take down your foes!

SUMMARY

Atomic Owl is a hybrid experience that is smooth and stylish. With Metroidvania-lite elements, plenty of platforming madness, and exciting combat, there is plenty to get your teeth into. However, repetition sets in and the rogue-like element feels a bit of an afterthought.
