Review: Airhead

Airhead is one of those games that just clicks. Its delightfully simple story and straightforward mechanics make you smile. Moreover, its grim but oddly beautiful aesthetic is stupidly captivating. As such, if you love Limbo, you will fall for this strange but fascinating endeavour.

This Metroidvania experience was developed by Octato and published by HandyGames. Additionally, in typical genre fashion, this utilises drip-fed mechanics and has some cruel puzzles to complete. Therefore, it isn’t a walk in the park, and it will test your logical mindset and patience. Yet, if you can overcome each hurdle that you face, you’ll adore the bizarre interconnected worlds and the even stranger creatures that lie within.

Body users the air cylinder to keep the adventure going.

Airhead is deliberately vague.

I’m a gamer who loves a deep and interesting story. Whenever I undertake a game that lacks a decent plot, I normally turn my nose up. However, the deliberately vague nature of Airhead was endearing. This strangely loose story and a distinct lack of direction could become frustrating. Yet, I loved the freedom and often challenging obstacles that you face.

You control a humanoid called Body. This headless entity attempts to explore the never-ending maze of tunnels. However, some chasms and obstacles prevent him from progressing. Thankfully, though, he stumbles across a strange creature known as Head. This inflatable being must be used to traverse each claustrophobic area. But there is a problem. If you run out of air, the pair die, and you must respawn from the nearest checkpoint. Accordingly, you must plan your journey and complete every puzzle before your oxygen runs out.

Brilliant puzzles.

The core gameplay loop was marvellous to experience. With cylinders of oxygen to consume and helium to swallow, the pair must work together to navigate each tight space. On top of this, the environment must be manipulated to open new paths and solve each intricate puzzle. Alongside this, you can upgrade the protagonists to inhale more gas to float to unreachable platforms or crash through stubborn platforms.

This basic approach was fantastic as it lacked the complexity of some of its peers. Moreover, Airhead utilises some staple genre moves such as double jumps, air dashing and the opportunity to light up a darkened area. These simple tools may seem underwhelming, but they do a great job of expanding the excellent world. Furthermore, the straightforward ideas ensure that this is perfect for newbies and veterans alike.

Use your torch to light the way.

Understanding each creature.

Devouring a lung full of gas and altering the landscape was fantastic. Additionally, the pressure of completing each puzzle before you run out of gas was challenging and rewarding. However, I adored the strange creatures that reside in this alien world. Each of these animals must be studied to progress. Moreover, you will need to be mindful of the annoying bug that loves to snatch your new friend Head.

Though the animals may be a pain in the arse, it was amazing to understand how each one could solve every problem you faced. Consequently, there is a little trial and error, but once you understand what is asked of you, the effort is extremely rewarding.

Airhead looks incredible.

Airhead is wonderfully simple to look at. Yet, like Limbo, the creepy environment is perfectly lit and brilliantly sinister. Additionally, once you get past the opening moments, the world turns into something to behold. The complexity of each puzzle and the variety of creatures keep you on your toes. On top of this, the madness of the ever-changing environment will keep you hooked and make you smile.

The atmospheric audio was phenomenal. The ambient sound was eerie and uncomfortable, but absolutely incredible. Moreover, the excellent sound effects enhance the alien nature of the protagonists. Accordingly, though it was odd, I loved every minute.

Straightforward controls.

Though there is plenty to learn, the control system was fantastic. Even when you were panicking, you could rely on the responsive inputs and easy-to-understand layout. However, the sense of urgency is somewhat off-putting and this can make you fail the simplest of puzzles. Consequently, you must stay calm and remain focused as you delve into the strange alien world.

In typical Metroidvania fashion, there are secrets to discover and a vast world to enjoy. Subsequently, this will keep you playing as you try and explore every nook and cranny. What’s more, the user-friendly mechanics ensure that you always have a chance. Therefore, it feels well-balanced and enjoyable throughout.

Airhead is a great indie experience.

Unfortunately, I don’t think Airhead will get the reception that it deserves. This captivating game is simple, beautiful, and a joy to experience. Moreover, the puzzles are intriguing, intelligent, and approachable. As such, this is a great indie experience that shouldn’t be missed. Accordingly, I recommend buying it here! Body is useless without a Head! As such, find your friend, keep on top of your air, and solve every problem.

SUMMARY
