Inkulinati is a sort of Monty Python-esque experience that sticks in my mind. However, the silly shenanigans are a smoke screen that hides a strategic core. Accordingly, you may laugh at the childish humour, but you must have a logical mindset and the heart of a lion if you wish to succeed. This strange blend of silliness and mature gameplay creates a balanced approach that rarely outstays its welcome. If you then consider that it is included as part of the Game Pass subscription service, you have nothing to lose by giving it a try.
This strategy title was developed by Yaza Games and published by Daedalic Entertainment. Moreover, it has a medieval edge and a hand-drawn aesthetic. As such, there is a wonderfully dated feel to everything you see and this works perfectly with the slow-paced action. On top of this, there is a delightful sense of tactical analysis that works your little grey cells. Subsequently, though you will chuckle throughout, you must consider plenty of options if you wish to succeed.
Inkulinati makes you raise an eyebrow.
Though the core mechanics are reasonably easy to understand, the learning curve is somewhat challenging. Accordingly, you’ll scowl and raise an eyebrow as you learn the fundamentals. Yet, once you understand what is asked of you, you’ll have a fantastic time mastering each finer point.
Inkulinati takes influence from real-life medieval Marginalia. As such, the developers have a heavy dose of creative licence at their disposal. The result is a stupidly bizarre thought process and some weird and wonderful moments. Consequently, each character and the protagonist resemble something you’d witness in a Monty Python sketch.

A fantastic single-player campaign.
Much of the action focuses on the single-player campaign. Here you must lead your tiny-Inkulinati leader as you tackle an array of enemies through a medieval world. En route, you will encounter events and various battlegrounds. However, the core concept remains familiar, and you must use your skills and the strengths of your hero to complete every battle.
The gameplay is relatively simple. Each hero is given a pot of ink to use. They must use this resource to draw an army of odd creatures to tackle their foes. Accordingly, you must decide if you wish to use melee creatures, long-ranged animals, or a defensive unit. Either way, you need to position them to maximise your tactical prowess and defeat each antagonist.
Victory is achieved if you can kill the opposition leader. However, you must be aware of your positioning as an ill-considered approach can undermine your position. Furthermore, apocalyptic fire can engulf you, or you can be pushed off the edge of the board. As such, victory isn’t always assured and remaining vigilant is a must if you wish to succeed.

Butts and trumpets.
Though the gameplay is relatively straightforward, it is the silliness of each unit that makes this shine. Who’d have thought that a rabbit’s butt could overpower a sword-wielding dog? Alternatively, an ass playing a trumpet may be your trump card. Either way, you must draw your army and master your tactics if you wish to get the most from Inkulinati.
On top of this, your tiny leader has powers and skills of their own. Consequently, you can risk it all and push your leader to the fore. Alternatively, you can sit back and allow your minions to work for you. Whatever you choose, you must consider the strengths of your army and maximise their potential.
Inkulinati looks fantastic.
I adore a hand-drawn aesthetic. As such, Inkulinati was right up my street. If you then chuck in the bizarre nature of each medieval image, you get a memorable experience that holds your attention. Though each battlefield is relatively simple, there is enough variety to keep things interesting. Moreover, there are layers of tactical nuance that enhance the gameplay further. Accordingly, though I wanted the arenas to be more complex, I believe that this will happen as the game is developed.
The audio was cruel but highly amusing. The blend of ye olde folksy music and OTT sound effects works perfectly. Whether you are shooting arrows, throwing spears, or slashing your sword, the noises are uncomfortable. Alongside this, the scream of every doomed creature is unnervingly amusing. Consequently, you will chuckle at the most inopportune moments.

Excellent controls.
This can be a complex and unfriendly game to play. However, the excellent controls, responsive inputs, and detailed tutorials make it a user-friendly experience. Furthermore, the clean UI helps to keep you on top of the action.
Though this is in Early Access, it has plenty of depth and replay value. Moreover, the developers have promised to add loads of content as the game evolves. Therefore, there is scope for a deep and rich title that has ample longevity and loads of reasons to return.
Inkulinati is an amusing and enjoyable experience.
Strategy games aren’t renowned for their light-hearted or amusing nature. Accordingly, Inkulinati is a refreshing change from the norm. If you then consider the vast potential on offer, this could be a cult classic. Additionally, I love the fact that it is included as part of the Game Pass subscription service. Consequently, I adore this game and I recommend buying it here! Can you rule the roost and defeat everything in your path? Draw your army, pick your tactics, and win every battle.
