The cheerful, yellow sponge is back in action! Do you have what it takes to play as SpongeBob and travel through various portals with your bestie Patrick Star, to help save all of your friends while being required to fulfill so many dangerous objectives?

That is exactly what you can expect with The Cosmic Shake. It is one game that will not only bring that humorous narrative similar to the TV series, but it will also bring a variety of obstacles for you to overcome. Even with that joyful humor, fun costumes to change into, and a large familiar cast of characters, it will still be one challenging game to complete!

Who Lives In A Pineapple Under The Sea

If you have ever seen the show, you know SpongeBob to be a charismatic and eccentric character. He really brings life to each episode of the TV series, movies, and of course, video games! His character hasn’t gotten dull from when he started out, years ago. Everything I’ve seen him in always brings a smile to my face and can be very hilarious to watch. Especially, when accompanied by his best pal Patrick. I feel together they make the perfect team and that is exactly what you get in this game, two friends side by side.

The game practically has the player controlling SpongeBob as the main hero. Patrick on the other hand, after being transformed into a smaller, floating starfish balloon due to the mystical bubbles which caused the cosmic shake. Well, he may be a little help aiding in underpants, which are the lifespan of SpongeBob, or floating him back to safety, but I feel his biggest role in this game is to supply some foolish and idiotic humor to the narrative. No matter what roles each play, the two will need to travel together, entering large environments to explore, complete plenty of objectives, and help save their friends.

One thing I really admired was the large, open-space locations you’ll enter from each portal just waiting to be explored. Unlike many platformer games, you are able to check out the world with minimal restriction, before diving right back into the main objective. Plus, with the additional flower guide that floats in the sky directing you toward the next objective, it’s very hard to get lost or confused about where to go next. So the player can actually explore so many more areas, and collect more jellyfish, or hidden objects freely, with no time limit stopping you.

The game does provide so much to do in each world, which isn’t all about defeating large jelly-mutated creatures. Most of the villains are your friends and to save them is to defeat them, which also returns you back to Bikini Bottom, waiting to go into another portal. While traveling through each world, there are so many objectives related to having fun by racing, trick-or-treating, rolling on boulders, doing karate moves for the paparazzi, and so much more! I found my favorite portal would be the Halloween Rock Bottom because it was fun to go trick-or-treating for candy, but to be honest each level had something fun and exciting to do.

I know that a game can’t always be perfect, only if it’s very simple to complete and play. However, like many games, this one has its flaws. The one main flaw that I stumbled upon, quite a few times could take the player away from enjoying the game fully. There were a few areas that ended up glitchy. This includes a few of the videos that were played during the game and many movements made by the character on the screen while it’s trying to load the next scene. I believe it’s due to too much happening at the same time, leading to plenty of freezing, slow down in loading, and just plain glitchy areas. So be careful, you might have to expect this to occur often during your gameplay too.

Fortunately, there was no need to ever restart the game. I actually was able to make it to the next areas of each world and accomplish the objectives without losing any of my completed work. So even if it gets a bit glitchy due to so much going on, there is still a high chance you’ll never have to worry about restarting the game or losing everything you’ve earned!

Lastly, one personal change I’d make in the game, reduce the narrative. Most of the conversation ends up being a bit much and I don’t really mind taking the time to read or watch through each video. So I end up skipping most of it. At least, the game is very easy to understand and explains what each control does. Plus the additional floating flower directs you toward the next objective, so there is no way to get lost or confused.

Final Thoughts

When I finally got to the end, I felt the game brought joy in two ways, humorous dialogue throughout the game and the action-packed gameplay. It had me absolutely entertained by the silly things these two characters, SpongeBob and Patrick happen to get into. Plus, there was no moment during the game when I felt there was no action. Since I started and all the way to the end, I was doing so much in the game that wasn’t only related to defeating enemies, but more like riding seahorses, playing a few competitive mini-style games, surfing on a surfboard, riding on a unicycle, trick-or-treating, racing in the snail race, long slide rides using SpongeBob’s tongue, unicorn riding, searching for items through a hedge maze and so much more! This game is totally amusing and entertaining, even with a few glitches that might cause a slight slow down in-between scenes.
