I think by now we’ve all scuttled about on the floor as a possessed rat and taken the time to sneak around Dishonored’s beautifully grim steampunk world. There aren’t many new RPG franchises that really make a name for themselves unless they are a spiritual successor or the sequel to a game from decades before. Dishonored managed to do just that and now the shiny new definitive edition is available to enjoy on your shiny new console.
For a complete review of the original game check out our review here. The first thing that you can’t miss about Dishonored: Definitive Edition is it’s amazing value for money. Currently you can pick up a copy for £25 or less for the PS4 and that includes all the DLC to the core game. Needless to say there is a huge wealth of content of one of the finest modern RPG’s made to get your hands on. If you haven’t played Dishonored before there’s really no excuse now. Especially considering you can get your hands on The Knife of Dunwall, The Brigmore Witches and the Dunwall City Trials DLC all in one go.
Along with all the added content comes a nifty little graphical update too. Dishonored was a pretty game back when it was released but these days might struggle to maintain standard. The usually texture updates are applied and there is a noticeable step up in quality from the original last gen releases bringing it closer to what PC gamers might expect. Although one area that has been disappointingly left is the frame rate. Time after time I see a game and think I would take some slightly iffy shadows or an ambiguous reflection in favour of that glorious 60 FPS. Even at 40 FPS things look nice and smooth and that jump from 30 to 40 is significant.
Unfortunately the Definitive Edition is left locked at 30 FPS limiting the smooth experience to PC players only. Another option which still has to be considered is the Game of The Year edition which is available now on Steam for £20 and also includes all the DLCs. Given the relatively low specifications and better quality this should still be the option for those with the choice. Still it has to be said the console option is much closer in price than usual which makes a nice change.
Even though the visuals aren’t quite as definitive as I’d have liked they are still an upgrade. I’d really have liked to have seen an increased frame rate but at least the textures got some attention. What The Definitive Edition represents is great value especially for console gamers. It’s a huge amount of content on offer for very little. And if you’ve never played Dishonored before this is absolutely the way to experience it. Some of the visuals are showing their age but overall Dishonored is still very playable. Now’s the time to play this amazing RPG or relive it for those who’ve experienced it before.
