Review of the Acer Aspire S7 Ultrabook

Final Thoughts

The S7 comes in both 11inch and 13inch models, and as mentioned, for this review we had the 13inch version.

Considering its 13inch display, the S7 is actually very lightweight. The display is Gorilla Glass 2, and produces a beautiful image, both very clear and very high quality. The touch screen works very well, and if you want to run Windows 8 on any laptop you really need a touch screen as it just works better! I found the touch screen very responsive and it didn’t getting marked very much, so that was certainly a plus for me!

The S7 looks and feels very sturdy, although I have to admit I am not a huge fan of the white lid, primarily because it does pick up fingerprints easily, although that is just a personal preference.

There is a good selection of ports on the S7, including multiple USB 3.0 ports, although it only has a Micro HDMI port, but you can easily get a cable for that if required, and Acer do include a Micro HDMI to VGA adaptor in the box.

The touch pad is ok, but I found that it was as responsive as it really needed to be – maybe that’s why Acer included a mouse in the box?

Once again Acer has included in the box pretty much everything you will need, including that mouse and a carry case, which is usually something you have to buy separately adding yet more cost, so well done Acer!

The two things I wasn’t happy with though are the noise and the battery life. Firstly the noise – the fan often kicks in, even when you are not doing anything too intensive, and frankly its rather loud. There are two main fans on the S7, one pulling in air and one pushing it out – they idea being the laptop remains cool, and that works well, but there is the trade off with the noise!

And the battery life – well, I was very disappointed with it. Acer claim the battery life is very good, and I’ve seen figures of 6+ hours mentioned, although our battery tests didn’t make 3 hours. Turning down the brightness and turning off various features and capabilities got me to 4 hours but that is not 6 hours, and most likely the things I disabled would be things you need, which is why you got the S7 in the first place.

All in all the Acer Aspire S7 a really great Ultrabook that is only let down by the battery. The noise and the responsiveness on the touchpad are things you can live with, just make sure you can live with the battery life.

And if it’s good enough for Megan Fox, well you really should take a look at it!

Price wise, for the Core i5 version we tested you are looking at a retail price of around £999.95, but as usual look around and find the best deal.
