Today Nintendo announced that the Wii U will receive a system update next week, introducing new eShop items and console features. As well as previously confirmed faster load times, future game and system updates will download in the background while playing, and will be automatically downloaded and installed in a new standby mode.

Data will be able to be transferred between USB devices, and holding B on the system start-up will boot the console straight to Wii mode.

Virtual Console will debut a day after the update, with Super Metroid, Excitebike, Picross, Ice Climber and Super Mario World launching soon after the service launches.

Panarama View will also launch on eShop the day following the update with four tours; Double Decker Tour, Rickshaw around Kyoto, Birds in Flight and Carnival! for £1.79 each.

While the specific date for the update has yet to be revealed, eShop updates occur on a Thursday, suggesting a date of Wednesday, April 24.
