Today Microsoft announces it is beginning to upgrade all Hotmail customers to Outlook.com.

Starting today, Microsoft will begin automatically upgrading all Hotmail users to Outlook.com expecting to be finished by summer 2013. Outlook.com has achieved more excitement and scale than expected; there are 60m+ active users worldwide in a little more than six months of service and it has become the fastest growing email service today.  Over one third of the new users in the US are upgrading from Gmail, the rest are primarily Hotmail users.

Over 12 million Outlook.com customers are using Sweep, Schedule cleanup, and similar tools to organise their inbox. Over 25 million Outlook.com customers have embraced SkyDrive to share over half a billion photos and Office documents.

Outlook.com is today announcing general availability and removing the preview tag.

  • Upgrade from Hotmail to Outlook.com is seamless and automatic, Hotmail users won’t need to do anything and will be kept informed about the upgrade.
  • All users content remains the same including email address (@hotmail.com), passwords, emails, contacts, folders, rules, and out of office replies.
  • Customers get all benefits from the redesigned Outlook.com experience – better performance, clean user interface, lots of new features — without any change to their core account info or data.
  • Any Hotmail customer can opt to upgrade today to take advantage of the better Outlook.com experience.
