You know the current beta release of Vail expires tomorrow, right? Have you backed up any data you have on the system? Make sure you also back up any Add-Ins or other software you may have installed outside of the Shared Folders. In addition, make sure you prepare an alternative way for Remote Web Access.

Goodbye Vail

.

Back Up Everything

If possible, back up any Add-In files you may need on the next version of Vail. Each Add-In developer should have more information, if any is needed at all.

Goodbye Vail

.

Remote Web Access

Make sure you have another way to get your home network starting tomorrow. I would suggest Windows Live Mesh 2011. For me, I will just turn back on the EX485 Remote Web Access.

Goodbye Vail

We will see what it looks like tomorrow. Ugh.

  1. What would be the rationale behind a "gap" in the Vail beta versions? Seems like a good reason to not participate the beta program if Microsoft is going to have these "gaps"!

  2. Did I miss it or was there nothing new about WHS from Microsoft at CES? I'm sure you would have it here. Everything I've seen is unofficial "news" from our MVPs. I'm sure you all got to stop by the Microsoft booth. Our expectations seem to be get set lower and lower and this beta gap is a perfect example. I though Balmer said "He'd look into it." but it seems that he didn't bother to put his glasses on.

      • Thanks Andrew. Even the Win Phone 7 info is useless to those of us with Verizon. iPhone will be be on the Big V before Win Phone 7. The whole situation is just frustrating. Guess I should continue learning how to use business products like Sever 2008R2 with exchange and the Small Business server since these will be getting all the features and support first. All the consumer focus has gone to Xbox the Client OS with an attempt at the mobile market again. If Apple ever sets up the Mac Mini Server with the features of WHS, it could be big factor in the consumer server market which I think is still in its infancy. Gonna need a way to get all your home content to your mobile device.

  3. Wow, it feels like Microsoft is forcing me to change to something else. I still dont' understand the decision to drop drive extender, it was perfect for my home family use. Now I'm losing access to my photos and music today with nothing to turn to except back to WHSv1 or something else.
