FINAL THOUGHTS
All in all I was very impressed with the TomTom app. It was easy to use, and finding the satellites was very quick.
I loved the fact it still worked even with the displayed turned off (I still heard the voice directions) or with other applications running.
The price is reasonable, especially when comparing it against other devices.
Price wise, the app and map I purchased was just under £50, and the price sometimes changes with offers, but also depending on what maps you want. For example, for a few pounds extra I could have purchased some European maps as well, but I didn’t really need them so wanted to save the space on my iPhone.
There were a couple of negative points I had though….
One main issue was battery life. For a one hour journey, I used over 20% of my battery. Ok, you can look to get a car kit or an in car charger, but still, that is a lot, and the iPhone itself when I got to my destination was very hot indeed!
I also didn’t like the fact I couldn’t just turn off the app. The only easy way I found was to switch off the iPhone and switch it back on again.
Would I recommend this to someone – simple answer is yes. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch and you either want satnav capabilities or you want to upgrade what you have, this app is for you.
The TomTom car kit is currently only available for the iPhone 3 series, but the iPhone 4 model should be out very soon.

I used to have a 3G, as I still believe it was the best available smartphone on the market at the time. Since then, Android has come of age with the 1GHz Snapdragon processor (and with that my new HTC Desire), bringing with it actual multitasking (rather than the circa 2002 WinMo multitasking that IOS4 achieves). This means that ALL apps can be run simultaneously. It doesn't have to be a feature of your satnav to keep working during a call, it just keeps working until you choose to close it because that's what the OS does.
I am very impressed with this web site, and also very helpful and secure.
