You can also create shared folders on the drive so that you can access it from any computer, and again, there is a very simple wizard to follow:
There is is a really useful status page:
There are so many other options and features that you use if you want, or just use it as a bog standard NAS box – the choice is yours and there are loads of very helpful wizards to guide you.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I really like the DS409slim. It is small which means you can tuck it out of the way, it is very easy to use with wizards to guide you through just about anything you want or need to do, and it is very quiet.
Adding drives was very simple and didn’t require any effort at all. The software installed quickly and the firmware upgrade was easy too.
Basically what more could you ask? If you have some 2.5” drives sitting around and you want to put them to good use then you really should consider getting the DS409slim.

The only real issue I can see to put people off is the price. In the UK it retails for around £325 and in the US around $400, which isn’t exactly cheap, although you certainly get a lot of features for your money. However, I can see a lot of people choosing a Windows Home Server over the DS409slim just because of the additional functions and features WHS has to offer. But if you don’t want WHS, then take a long hard look at the DS409slim, it may just be for you.
