Do you need some external storage? Do you need something portable? And by portable I mean something that you could carry around in your pocket? If the answer is yes then look no further than the Seagate FreeAgent GO USB hard drive range.

IMG_0340

The FreeAgent Go drives come in 10 different colours (so there should be one you like) and also in 4 different storage capacities (250GB, 320GB, 500GB, 640GB).

The drive I am reviewing is the 320GB in tuxedo black.

BOX CONTENTS

The box contains the 320GB portable hard drive, a USB cable, a quick start guide and a warranty booklet (the usual sorts of things you would expect).

IMG_0341

The quick start guide is very simple to follow – it is a couple of pictures showing you how to connect the drive to your computer, but I would imagine that most people probably won’t even look at it.

The USB cable is very short, which is great if you want to just connect it to your laptop, or if you have easy access to whatever computer you are going to connect to, otherwise it may be too short for you!

USING THE DRIVE

The drive itself contains the user guides and also the Seagate Manager software. Just connect the drive to a computer and you will be offered the option to install the software (which comes in multiple languages).

Installing the software is simple and is just a few clicks of the mouse.

When the software started I was advised there was a software update, so I followed the steps and installed the update. This did take a few minutes, so be patient.

software update

The Seagate Manager software adds a powerful set of tools to your FreeAgent Drive:
• Backup and restore features to enable you to protect your data.
• Sync, to synchronize one or more folders between two or more computers.
• Security features, including encryption of multiple files and folders in one location, as well as backup and sync encryption.
• Settings to control power management, software updates, drive lights and more.

Seagate Manager

The software is very easy to use and just requires a few point and clicks to do what you want.

There are even lights on the back of the top of the drive that light up when connected.

CONCLUSION

I love this drive. It is tiny, it weights next to nothing, it is quiet and it looks good! If you need an external drive for any reason, this is certainly one you should consider. Seagate claim that this is the thinnest portable drive available, and I could well believe that.

The Seagate Manager software is a useful addition if you need it as well.

You can even buy a carry case and dock for the drive if you so wish.

I wrote an article a while back on how and why you should back up your Windows Home Server Shared Folders to an external drive and store it offsite. This drive would be perfect for that task. To read that article click here.

The US retail price for the 320GB drive is around $120 (although Seagate themselves are selling it for $90). The UK retail price is around £60, but look around as there are some good deals to be had!

  1. Did you install the Seagate software on your WHS? I have teh same drive and could not get the software to install correctly. I have wondered if it is my specific installation or WHS in general.

    • No, I ran it from a pc. When using it with my WHS, I just plugged in the drive and used the Windows Home Server Console to do what I wanted in terms of backing up data to it.

  2. My computer (Windows XP) will not let me run the installation program that comes on the drive. I think it is the work of a virus that has been blocking processes on my computer for some time now. What do you say?

      • Well, i'm not sure if I did. But the computer that had a virus on it destroyed itself. The operating system wasn't accessible anymore after a while. But the Drive did start working. Thanks for trying to help!

  3. I purchased a seagate Free Agent 320 GM external hardrive but it did not come with any software. When I plug it in nothing happens. I have tried in on both our laptop and our desk top. The light is flashing but it is not recognized by our computers. How do I get this software?

    • Phyllis – the software is preinstalled on the drive – if you cannot get your computers to recognise the drive I would suggest you return the drive as it might be faulty.

  4. Is it possible to backup the drivers for this item? I had a Maxtor One Touch and when I installed a new hard drive, it would not recognise it, I tried to copy the drivers but whilst it recognises there is a Maxtor it will not run it.

    Thanks

  9. Hello,

when I Install the seagate it say that my computer is required to be running 32 bit Vista. But I have 64 bit?

    Thnaks

    • Steven

I had it running on my 64 bit Win 7 machine. It may be worth checking out the Seagate website for a later version of the software or failing that actually drop Seagate support an email.

  12. i do already tried it andrew,… i checked the seagate site and i saw a docking station for free agent GO, do i need to buy that thing so i can use it in my desktop computer? or its okay even it has no docking station for the desktop? and 1 thing, can i use this portable drive in watching movie in DVD with USB port? thanks

    • Hi Jay-tee

There is a docking station but you shouldnt need it. Certainly I dont have one and I just plug the drive into any of my computers and it works just fine.

If you copy the movie to the drive, yes – you can watch it from there.

      Andrew

  13. hi andrew i brought this kind of portable driver, why it is slow when I'm transferring a movie file?

    • Carla

There could be many reasons why it is slow – for example, the port you are connecting it to on your computer, your AntiVirus software, other things your computer is doing, etc, etc, etc.

Sorry I cant be more specific, each persons setup is different. I can say though that I copy large files to and from the drive all the time and I dont notice any slow transfer.

  14. I'm not able to see the Seagate icon when connected to laptop . Further, the back up program doesnt work at all. Please advise

    • Hussain

Can I suggest that you contact Seagate Technical Support as they will be better able to help you through your problems.

  17. I have a question about Seagate, may be a stupid question but this is my first external hard drive. I have it all installed no problems, everything is backed up. What I would like to do with this external hard drive is to keep all of my ITunes library and playlists on this drive. But I cannot get Itunes Downloaded to the hard drive so I can manage my music and create playlists. My computer is full of music and some how I have to get it off onto another drive to free up my space. Will my Seagate harddrive do this?

    • Yvette

I think what you need to do is to move the iTunes library and then tell iTunes that the library is located on hard drive (iTunes should just see it at as a drive letter).

Do a search on Google for moving iTunes libraries or adding another.

      Andrew

  18. Hi there, can I use the Seagate to back up my desktop and my notebook or do I need seperate backup drives?

    • Its just an external hard drive so you can use it on as many computers as you want until the space runs out.

      Andrew

  19. i got the external hard drive. the hard drive light is blinking and got weird sound from it. can help me??

  20. Hi I bougth a Free Agent 500GB GO portalbe drive, I have a DVD with USB that I use to connect with other HDD that I have (iomega) but this one (seagate) doent work in my DVD USB says empty card, do you know what I need to do in order that my HDD works with my DVD USB?

    tks

  21. I have a seagate freeagent go and yesterday it just stop working for a min there was the white light when u plug into the usb but now it just makes a beeping noise…

    • This is because your USB port does not provide enough power. I had the same problem when plugging the drive to a USB1.0 port. You may check the power on the USB port, if it is less than 500mA then the FreeAgent will make a ticking-screaming noise and the light will pulsate (flashes slowly).

  22. I bought a 320 GB Freeagent Go and after about 6 months it got hot when I was using it, and there was weird sounds, too. It was replaced by a new one but kind of different than the one had (slimmer, fewer blinks).

After about 3 months, this new one starts having problems. It lagged when copying, and now can't copy files over 100 MB from/to it. I could still copy small files (300 MB) but it still lags. But yesterday I couldn't even do that. What should do?

(Please send a reply to my e-mail)

  23. Hi,

I have a Assembled Computer with Processor Intel Dual Core (R) @ 270 GHz, 3 GB of RAM equipped with Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition version 2005 service Pack 3 with Wi-Fi Netgear 108 Mbps Lan Card and Internal Pixelview TV Tuner Card.

I have just bought this external harddisk today from market. But My system cannot read the information on the my 500 GB Seagate Freeagent go external hard drive using the supplied USB cable. The external drive does not come up at all. Is a required driver missing out on my system? When I connect my 500 Gb Seagate Freegent go External Hard drive, it always ask for drivers and show message at last

    • Sukhdev

Thanks for your question – I think the best thing is for you to try contacting Seagate support as I dont know the answer to your question.

      Sorry.

      Andrew
