wolf guard for space hulk

“When it came to selecting the first expansion chapter for Space Hulk we felt that the introduction the Space Wolves would be both a great addition to the game, and a nod to the fact that our studio is based in the heart of Scandinavia – the Viking kingdoms of the past”, said Thomas Hentschel Lund, CEO of Full Control. “Devastatingly ferocious in attack and immovably resolute in defense, the Wolf Guard will be a fantastic addition to the Space Hulk universe introducing new gameplay styles and methodology into the classic turn based action”.

The three mission campaign “Fangs of Fenris” uses the elite Wolf Guard Terminators of the Space Wolves chapter. The campaign was originally posted in White Dwarf magazine #200 from 1996, and is now making the leap to the digital game. The chapter will also introduce new weapons including the Frost Blade, Frost Axe and Wolf Claws.

TopGear The Stig Coming to Forza 5 Next Month Only On Xbox One

Racing fans will soon be donning their virtual crash helmets in anticipation of the imminent release of “Forza Motorsport 5” where they will have the first opportunity ever to try and beat the BBC motoring entertainment TV show’s white-suited test driver The Stig – albeit his Digital Cousin.

In an exclusive new video released today by BBC Worldwide, the renowned racing driver’s digital counterpart can be seen clocking up some perfect lap times around a test track, while the Xbox One Racing Team V8 Supercar crew are unawares. Unlike the real-life Stig however, it’s rumoured that for the very first time ever this will be a more fallible Stig – and one that can be beaten – but only if you’re fast. Players will be able to test themselves against him in “Forza Motorsport 5”, coming exclusively to Xbox One on 22nd November.

The video launches ahead of the annual Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 car race taking place this Sunday at the Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. The car featured in the video being driven by The Stig’s Digital Cousin is the Holden Xbox One Racing Team car which will be driven by Britain’s Andy Prilaux, three-time WTCC winner and Bathurst veteran, and Sweden’s Mattias Ekstrom in this weekend’s race.

XBOX TOP GEAR

Duncan Gray, Top Gear’s Commercial Director at BBC Worldwide says: “Trying to beat The Stig on track has long been the petrol-fuelled dreams of Top Gear fans everywhere and whilst Jeremy and the team did not want to frustrate or embarrass gamers by putting forward the real Stig, they did help us track down a potentially more fallible relative of their tame racing driver.”

Dan Greenawalt, creative director on “Forza Motorsport 5”, said “The partnership between Forza Motorsport and Top Gear has featured many highlights over the years. Including The Stig’s digital cousin in the game is a natural extension of that creative partnership. Now, on top of racing against the best virtual drivers in the world online or against brand new cloud-powered Drivatar opponents in career mode, players can tackle the digital cousin of one of the world’s most celebrated racing icons.

In “Forza Motorsport 5”, players will be able to experience Top Gear in numerous ways throughout the game. Players will be able to race the Top Gear test track – every corner from Hammerhead to Gambon meticulously recreated with unprecedented accuracy. An all-new Career Mode will feature events and opponents that are true to each car’s automotive heritage. “Forza Motorsport 5” career events are organized by car genre – including vintage cars, sports compacts, grand touring, exotics and more. Jeremy, James, and Richard will be on hand, providing their unique perspective through voiceovers on the collection of cars featured in the career mode events.

Rocksmith 2014 Session Mode trailer released

Ubisoft have released a brand new trailer showcasing Rocksmith 2014’s innovative new Session Mode.

Rocksmith2014Edition_Lifestyle_13769[2]

With a completely redesigned interface, new songs, and all-new features, Rocksmith 2014 Edition is tailored to better teach the key elements of guitar playing. A new fully customizable “Riff Repeater” lets players select any section of a song they want to play, and repeat that section over-and-over until it’s mastered. Players can also set the starting difficulty level, speed, or play note-by-note through challenging parts, all on-the-fly. A new “Master Mode” makes playing by memory more approachable and new “Guitarcade” mini-games have been created to hone specific guitar skills. With these flexible and deep practice tools, it’s never been easier for players to play their favourite songs on guitar or bass.

Session Mode allows the player to lead an artificially intelligent band that plays along with them. The virtual band (which can be customized according the player’s choice of metronome and instruments– there are 70 different Session Mode instruments!) reacts to their playing dynamically. It’s a more advanced feature, but Rocksmith 2014 Edition has missions to guide the player through it if they are a beginner. Experts can jump right in and play along the entire guitar neck by zooming out.

Session Mode is also available in Multiplayer mode, so two players can Jam side-by-side and create their own band experience.

Session Mode can also be played with any electric instrument with a ¼” jack, e.g. an electric ukulele or violin, however, it’s not officially supported and you wouldn’t see any special interface or guide. Still, the band will dynamically react to the music you play.

I also recently sat down with Paul Cross, the Creative Director for Rocksmith 2014, so over to Paul:

Review of Beyond: Two Souls from Sony

0

There are only two games on the PS3 that I have ever turned on for the first time and finished without ever turning them off. The first was Metal Gear Solid 4. The other is Beyond: Two Souls. It’s very difficult to be unbiased and completely indifferent when it comes to a Quantic Dream game. I was also a fan of Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy in the USA) and Heavy Rain so my enjoyment of Beyond came as no surprise.

Quantic Dream take a different approach to most when making games and as such I’m going to take a slightly different approach to my review. Largely because deciding what criteria to judge a game like Beyond on is very difficult. Many decide that comparing one of Quantic’s action sequences to that of an action game is a good idea. And come to the rather obvious conclusion that the action game is better at action and punish Beyond accordingly. If we’re going to do this, we may as well compare peanuts to a lettuce. Most of us will struggle to score the lettuce in reference to the peanut without basically just referring to personal opinion.

So please bear in mind that if you don’t want an interactive narrative like previous Quantic Dream games that Beyond is not going to change your mind. Just like the next CoD or Battlefield aren’t going to appeal to those who don’t like FPS’s, regardless of how good they are. It’s unfair to punish Beyond with a low score just because of its genre, despite the fact most reviews will, so I’m not going to. With that out of the way, I’ll get back into character and get started.

20428BEYOND_SCREEN_12

Beyond uses a disjointed narrative style, reminiscent of films like Memento or Pulp Fiction, to tell the tale of Jodie Holmes and her supernaturally tethered invisibly entity, Aiden. As we dart about through Jodie’s life, ranging from little girl to adult, we slowly begin to build up a full and rounded view of her life. The meat of the story in Beyond concerns CIA laboratories and a world filled with spirits and monsters that lies beyond. Depending on which faze of the story you find yourself in it shifts from supernatural thriller to pure science fiction with more lab coats than you can shake a test tube at.

At times the plot can become a little far fetched and some suspension of disbelief may be required but providing you let yourself enjoy Beyond, you will. Strangely it’s not really the plot that is the main concern anyway. The story that Beyond is trying to tell is Jodie’s story. So we join Jodie during some of her most intimate, exciting, mundane and darkest moments each of which is equally important.

Jodie is played by the great Ellen Page who does an absolutely fantastic job. With the technology Quantic Dream have used Ellen’s subtle acting style is fully realized in Beyond. Expressions are clear and easily read without ever feeling like overacting is required due to lack of technical proficiency. Our connection with Jodie’s character is so crucial to Beyond and I’m so glad Ellen Page was casted in the part, she really sold Jodie’s character.

20425BEYOND_SCREEN_09

But she’s not the only great acting talent in beyond, Willem Dafoe also makes a strong appearance as the fathering Dr.Nathan Dawkins. The supporting characters are a little generic, a mad scientist here, a cold hearted CIA agent there, but on the whole acting is good and certainly enough to support Page. The movement and subtle gestures of all the characters are by far the best I’ve ever seen. Something as simple as someone reaching for a cup of coffee sees his/her body moving exactly how you would expect.

Accompanying the impressive motion capture are stunning backdrops. Camera angles switch and angle themselves to ensure you get a good look around without breaking your movement. The camera is also used to tell you where to go by shifting its focus. Although you can move the camera slightly it can sometimes be frustrating that you can’t spin it to check behind you or look over to check a corner. If you just let the camera do its work Beyond will show you what you need and look good doing it, but it’s difficult given gaming conventions of the past 10 years or so.

The same frustrations can also be said for the narrative. If you look at Beyond as a story describing several characters and the events that effect them then there is very little that can be altered in Beyond. The story is told to you rather than you telling your own. But I see Beyond as Jodie’s story and the events that effect her life. If you look at it in this way there are choices presented to you constantly that effect Jodie, or someone that directly effects her in turn. The overall plot is largely fixed, apart from the endings, but Jodie’s experience can be changed quite considerably.

Sure there are no conversation wheels at the bottom of the screen with “good” options on one side and “bad” on the other but rather Beyond relies on subtlety. When you break into a certain building missing something can drastically alter the events that unfold. When trying to evade the police a series of chase sequences can be completely avoided if you do things right, which I couldn’t figure out my first time. Large parts of the story will remain the same to ensure the story is told but that’s not to say there aren’t options.

20430BEYOND_SCREEN_14

In an attempt not to drag you out of the experience the control system has been integrated by almost entirely using the right thumbstick. When there is an action to be performed a white dot will appear and moving the thumbstick in the correct direction will perform the action. Gone are the days of overcomplicated QTE’s (Quick Time Events) too. When you fight and an action needs to be inputted the game will go into slow motion and your job is to move the thumbstick in the direction Jodie is moving in. There are a few tricky points but once you get used to it it’s an elegant solution that ensures you stay immersed in the experience.

Alongside all the top-notch production is an adequately top-notch soundtrack partially composed by Normand Corbeil (who sadly died before he completed his work) and finished by Lorne Balfe. It often provides a slightly melancholy backing to what’s on screen, although what’s on screen is often quite melancholy too. At times I found the soundtrack a little underused but at the same time it never intruded or made speech difficult to hear.

If you turn the lights off, crank up the surround sound and let yourself get totally absorbed into the story Beyond has to tell it is impossible not to be taken in. Accompanying Jodie from a confused and lost little girl to a CIA agent to a homeless person enduring the harshest circumstances in the depth of depression allows for a deep and meaningful characterization the likes of which are rarely possible outside of a Quantic Dream title. Especially when it is performed so superbly by Ellen Page.

Unarguably Quantic Dream have made great advancements with the technology they are using and Beyond’s production values are through the roof. Your PS3 will be relentlessly taxed and surely Beyond has squeezed every last drop of power available on the platform. But if you’re looking for an action packed adventure or total freedom this isn’t the game for you. Beyond has even further blurred the line between films and video games and for me its emotional journey was one I couldn’t stop until the very end. Well done David Cage and Quantic Dream, I can’t wait to see what the PS4 will bring us.

Arma 3 Campaign Episode on October 31

1

Bohemia Interactive today announced the release date for the Survive campaign episode of Arma 3. Dropping in as free DLC on Thursday October 31, players take on the role of a regular soldier stationed in the Republic of Altis & Stratis.

arma3_survive_screenshot_08

“Our first campaign episode, ‘Survive’, introduces players to Ben Kerry, a regular soldier who’s part of a NATO peacekeeping mission in the Mediterranean. Following a couple of years of uneasy cease-fire, this US-led deployment is now in the process of a staged drawdown. The vacuum left by withdrawing forces is being rapidly filled by the opposing CSAT faction, creating the conditions for, one might say, a flashpoint” , explains Jay Crowe, Creative Director on Arma 3.

arma3_survive_screenshot_06

“Of course, it’s not just about our own story, but another opportunity to provide yet more building blocks for the platform – new weapons, animations, 3D objects, scripted modules – each designed to grant content creators even greater freedom to create and share their own content. Looking forward to the forthcoming episodes, we’ll continue to expand Arma 3’s sandbox with additions such as new vehicles.”

Arma 3 features the large open terrains of ‘Altis’ (270 km²) and ‘Stratis’ (20 km²), 12 singleplayer showcases, 3 factions showcases, 9 multiplayer scenarios, 10 firing drill challenges, more than 20 vehicles and 40 weapons, 5 factions, the scenario editor and modding support. The singleplayer campaign is deployed across 3 free DLC episodes after release.

People can purchase the regular Arma 3 (44.99 EUR/39.99 GBP/59.99 USD) or the Arma 3 Digital Deluxe Edition (49.99 EUR/42.99 GBP/64.99 USD) from Steam and Store.bistudio.com. A boxed version of Arma 3 is also available at many of the major retailers.
