New Insurance Product Launched By TomTom and Motaquote

0

TomTom has teamed up with insurance broker Motaquote for the launch of Fair Pay Insurance – a product that rewards ‘good’ drivers with lower premiums.

PRO3100_driving_view

“Our entry into the insurance market with our proven fleet management technology puts us at the forefront of a move that could help to revolutionise the motor insurance industry,” said Thomas Schmidt, Managing Director TomTom Business Solutions.

“We offer a unique combination of navigation, traffic information and telematics which opens up great opportunities for insurance companies to promote greener, safer driving and create a ground breaking portfolio of new insurance products.

“We are delighted Motaquote have recognised this potential in the launch of such an innovative product.”

Fair Pay Insurance gives drivers control over their own policy by using driving ability and behaviour to allocate premiums, rather than so-called risk factors such as postcode, gender, age and vehicle type.

“We’ve dispensed with generalisations and said to our customers, if you believe you’re a good driver, we’ll believe you and we’ll even give you the benefit up front,” said Nigel Lombard, Managing Director of Fair Pay Insurance.

“This is unlike some other telematics-based schemes where you may have to prove your ability over a number of months.  So if you think of your insurance as your car’s MPG – the better you drive, the longer your fuel will last.  It’s the same with Fair Pay Insurance, good drivers get more for their money and in that sense they will pay ultimately less.”

Drivers who sign up for Fair Pay will benefit from a specially-developed TomTom PRO 3100 navigation device, which includes Active Driver Feedback and LIVE Services. This means policy-holders can be alerted to driving events, such as harsh cornering and sharp breaking, and benefit from accurate traffic information updated every two minutes.

They will also have a LINK tracking unit fitted in their vehicles, allowing driver behaviour and habits to be monitored. This information can then be viewed by the policy-holder in their driver dashboard, an online tool that details journey and driver behaviour data, and in regular email bulletins.

Raspberry Pi Available by the End of February

We mentioned Raspberry Pi early in January, now they have said that it will be available by the end of the month.

PC236526-1024x768_thumb

This is what the Raspberry Pi guys posted:

I’ve got some bad and good news about manufacturing. The bad news is that it’s taking a little longer than we’d hoped, because the factory had some trouble sourcing a specific component. The quartz crystal package we had chosen when we thought we were manufacturing in the UK is readily available over here in Europe, and was the cheapest we could find; but it turns out that in China, that crystal package has been overtaken in price and size by a smaller, cheaper one, so the one we’d designed for has been a bit hard to find. The factory has sourced crystals now, so we’re all go. The good news is that this finally means we have a date for the first batch: the boards will be finished on February 20. Eben and I may be going to China to make sure that the boards can be brought up properly for that date if necessary. We’ll be airfreighting them to the UK immediately, so you should be able to buy them before the end of the month.

I’m looking forward to getting my hands on one!

StableBit DrivePool Moves to Beta M4 Build 5669

There has been another beta build from CoveCube! StableBit development marches on – now its beta M4 build 5669.

600px-Stablebit_drivepool_screen_thu16

Here is how CoveCube describes this application:

  • Combine all your hard drives into one big storage pool (except the system drive with the OS).
  • Add and remove drives from the pool at any time without re-partitioning or manually moving folders.
  • Create duplicated folders on the storage drive pool that are protected against single drive failure. If a drive fails on which a duplicated file was stored, the contents of that file will remain readable even without the drive.
  • All your data is stored in standard NTFS files. You can always access your files even if the Windows Home Server completely crashes or this add-in can’t be used.

This version’s change log:

1.0.0.5669 ———-

* [D] Fixed compatibility issue with volume shadow copy service (for non-pooled drives). It is a good idea to reboot BEFORE upgrading to this version, just in case VSS is locked up. If VSS is locked up while upgrading, the upgrade will lock up: In that case, Reboot -> Dashboard -> Remove DrivePool -> Reboot -> Install latest build.

* Fixed M4 migration issue causing “Access denied” error.

* [D] Workaround for issue in rdbss (bug?) that denies a flush on a read-only handle. This incorrectly returns access denied errors for non-write operations. This only affects files accessed using a UNC share path, locally on the server. Accessing shares from remote or from the local drive letter does not trigger this problem.

* [D] When cloning directories, clone the owner properly.

* [D] Improved performance / accuracy of file size tracking.
