LightSquared Files for Chapter 11

0

LightSquared filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy yesterday in a bid to restructure the troubled broadband company.  We have some of the details.

Print

LightSquared has been attempting to build a celluar data network in the United States, but ran into issues when the Department of Defense and other parties interested in GPS systems alleged that LightSquare’s network interfered with proper function of GPS systems.  The firm has been trying to refinance their bonds and yesterday filed for Chapter 11 reorganization in the United States Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York.

First, a little background from the company’s website on what they do:

First Truly Open, Wholesale-Only Network

LightSquared is building the only national 4G-LTE open wireless broadband network that incorporates nationwide satellite coverage and offers people the speed, value and reliability of universal connectivity, wherever they are in the United States. Through its wholesale-only business model, those without their own wireless network or who have limited geographic coverage or spectrum can market and sell their own devices, applications and services using the LightSquared network—at a competitive price and without retail competition from LightSquared.

Convenient Connectivity For All

LightSquared enables manufacturers and retailers to provide a one-box solution for consumers, while creating new customer relationships and ongoing revenue streams for themselves. Because it is a completely open network, partners can develop their own devices, applications, and services that use the LightSquared network.

For example, by partnering with LightSquared, retailers will be able to sell devices bundled with service, enabling potential new recurring revenue streams for every device while maintaining full ownership of their customers. Telecommunications service providers can expand their coverage and capabilities via LightSquared’s nationwide 4G network without massive capital outlays. Device manufacturers can launch innovative and integrated devices, bundled with content and broadband service, while ensuring full ownership of their customer relationships.

Second, the press release from LightSquared explaining the filing:

LightSquared Implements Voluntary Chapter 11 Restructuring

Company Continues to Provide Mission Critical Services to Customers

Filing Gives Company Breathing Room to Pursue Build Out of its 4G Wireless Network

RESTON, Va., May 14, 2012 – – LightSquared announced today that it commenced voluntarily reorganization cases under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code to give it time to resolve regulatory issues that have prevented it from building its coast-to-coast integrated satellite 4G wireless network. The company will also file a recognition proceeding in Canada.

The company fully expects to continue normal operations throughout this process. All LightSquared distribution partners and customers, including public safety, emergency response, government and military users of LightSquared’s satellite-based communications services can continue to rely on LightSquared to provide them with mission critical communications services.

“The filing was necessary to preserve the value of our business and to ensure continued operations. The voluntary Chapter 11 filing is intended to give LightSquared sufficient breathing room to continue working through the regulatory process that will allow us to build our 4G wireless network,” said Marc Montagner, interim co-chief operating officer and chief financial officer of LightSquared. “All of our efforts are focused on concluding this process in an efficient and successful manner.”

LightSquared intends to work with all key constituents to conduct an orderly restructuring process to maximize its asset value and to exit Chapter 11 in the quickest and most efficient manner possible.

LightSquared expects that its current management team will continue to lead the company throughout this process.

The filing was made in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York and the recognition proceeding will be filed in the Superior Court of Justice in Toronto, Ontario.

For more information about the company’s restructuring, including all pleadings in the process, please visit www.kccllc.net/LightSquared. You may also access the court website at www.nysb.uscourts.gov (a PACER account is required).

About LightSquared

LightSquared is a mobile communications provider currently serving government customers, public safety, and the commercial transport and logistics industries. The company has invested more than $4 billion to deploy an integrated satellite-terrestrial network which will provide next generation, high-speed mobile services on a nationwide basis. LightSquared’s state-of-the-art satellite –successfully launched in 2010 – will be combined with 4G LTE terrestrial technology to create a nationwide communications system that offers superior coverage and mobile broadband speeds. LightSquared’s integrated satellite-terrestrial network will expand wireless broadband capacity at a time when demand is increasing exponentially. LightSquared’s wholesale-only business model will enable existing and new service providers to sell their own devices, applications and services – at a competitive cost and without retail competition from LightSquared. CDW Review - LaCie 2big NAS 008_thumb[5]

Powered by a 2GHz processor and improved file system, the 2big NAS delivers speeds of up to 100MB/s, ensuring employees can share files from any PC, Mac, or Linux workstation.

“According to data from Research and Markets, network storage is growing in excess of 30% annually, increasing the demands placed on network storage devices,” said Erwan Girard, Professional Business Unit Manager at LaCie. “The LaCie 2big NAS was developed to scale with the needs of SOHO users, delivering fast file sharing and data security, the two most critical factors for a small business.”

Fast Collaboration

In a data-dependant world, small offices can’t afford delays in workflow. The 2big NAS supports non-stop data accessibility and collaboration thanks to its 2Ghz processor and LaCie NAS OS 2 software. It delivers enough storage capacity and bandwidth to back up multiple workstations, share large files and work on projects concurrently.

Formidable Data Security

Data multiplies by the second, so office administrators and IT professionals must ensure all digital assets are backed up and secure. The LaCie 2big NAS offers multiple levels of security including RAID 1 for data mirroring. Coupled with its hot-swappable drives, a failed disk can be replaced with no interruption, no data loss and without needing to turn off the device.

The LaCie 2big NAS ensures a complete backup of any Linux, PC or Mac workstation. Choose from the popular Time Machine and Windows 7 Backup software, or the included LaCie backup software. Consistent automatic backup means users can restore lost files instantly.

What’s more, LaCie’s NAS OS 2 dashboard makes it easy for businesses to back up the 2big NAS automatically, for added data security and peace of mind. Wizards with presets make advanced tasks such as RAID management, user management and NAS-to-NAS backups so easy that you don’t need an IT degree. With just a few clicks users can back up the 2big NAS onto a direct-attached external hard drive, or schedule a nightly backup onto a NAS in a different location.

Remote accessibility

Complementary to fast file sharing and data security is instant access to data. The 2big NAS allows employees to access important files anywhere where there is an Internet connection. They can even download the free iOS app – LaCie MyNAS – to access files from an iPhone or iPad.

Energy Savings

The LaCie 2big NAS saves businesses money by allowing full control of its energy usage. Users can schedule shutdown and restart during optimal business hours to boost efficiency. Plus, the LaCie 2big NAS is now ten times more energy efficient when in deep sleep mode. And, thanks to the wake-on-LAN protocol, users can access the 2big NAS from deep sleep without being next to the system.

Sony bring BBC Sport app to the Sony Entertainment Network on connected BRAVIA TVs and Playstation 3

Sony today announced the BBC Sport app, which will sit alongside BBC News and BBC iPlayer on the Sony Entertainment Network, will be launching on Sony BRAVIA and PlayStation 3 devices in time for Wimbledon 2012, providing exciting new television content over and above that available on free-to-air television.

Basic RGB

The application has been designed specifically for the ‘big-screen’ to deliver an ultimate home entertainment experience. The principal purpose is to deliver live sporting events where there are simultaneous activities or multiple camera angles, making it an ideal fixture to get front row seats to watch Formula One™ and major sporting events coming to London this summer, including Wimbledon and the Olympics.

With the BBC capturing highlights of the key sporting events over the summer, the app will provide UK consumers with an incredible mix of both live and on-demand sporting events from the UK and around the world, straight to their living rooms at the simple touch of a button. Throughout the London 2012 Olympics Games, the BBC Sport app will give audiences access to 2,500 hours of content and up to 24 simultaneous live events, all in HD.

Edd Uzzell, Sony category development manager for BRAVIA, believes the launch of BBC Sport app is one of the most exciting developments for the Sony Entertainment Network.

“Televised sport is one of the biggest rating wins for broadcasters. This truly is a killer app and will provide a substantial amount of additional sporting content that you can’t get through the current broadcasting model. We strongly believe this will kick-start more widespread usage of the connected television offering, providing sport fans using the app with in-depth big-screen coverage of their favorite events. The app will also have extensive penetration in the UK thanks to its availability on PlayStation 3” says Uzzell.

“Launching this app to millions of PS3 owners in the UK will be a very welcome addition to PlayStation’s universal entertainment credentials” added Alan Duncan, UK Marketing Director for Sony Computer Entertainment UK.

In addition to the current BBC red-button function consumers with the BBC Sport app will have access to more interactive content and extra coverage of future sporting events.

The app’s user interface will be familiar to consumers who currently use the BBC Sport website, it will be simple to navigate using the standard remote control, Media Remote smartphone application or PlayStation 3 controller. It will launch on PS3, 2011 & 2012 Internet Enabled BRAVIAs’ with more devices to follow.

Microsoft talks about Family Safety in Windows 8

In the next of their Building Windows 8 series of articles, Microsoft talks about Family Safety.

Family Safety

This is how the article begins:

Kids today grow up online. They use computers to do their homework, play games, communicate with friends, and access the wealth of information on the web. Computers give children access to many positive experiences; however, parents face challenges in monitoring what their children see online, the people they meet, and the information they share.

At Microsoft, we want to help parents create a healthy computing environment for their kids. We encourage parents to talk to their children about online safety and to set guidelines for their computer use. Microsoft and many safety advocates also recommend moving the family computer to a common room in the house so parents can glance over their kids’ shoulders to gain a better understanding of their online activities. Parenting techniques like this are important, but they may be difficult to employ if your household has multiple PCs or if your kids use laptops and tablets. And glancing over a teenager’s shoulder can be awkward for both parents and kids.
