Activision shows off some footage from The Walking Dead video game

Activision has released some footage for their forthcoming The Walking Dead video game.

Walking-Dead-Video-Game_thumb1_thumb

In the game, players assume the role of the mysterious, crossbow-wielding survivor Daryl Dixon. This first-person survival title takes place within the universe of “The Walking Dead” and before the events of the AMC show, following Daryl and his brother Merle on a gruesome journey to reach the supposed safety of Atlanta as the world around them ends. Reedus and Rooker will bring life to their characters’ desperate, unforgiving struggle against limited resources, the nightmarish walkers and, perhaps, their fellow survivors…

And here is the new video:

The Walking Dead video gameis scheduled for release in 2013 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 PC, and is currently rated “RP” (Rating Pending) by the ESRB.  For more information, visit www.TheWalkingDeadBegins.com

I am a big fan of both the comic and the TV show, and I really like what TellTale Games have done with their game so I am excited to see what Activision will bring.

Samsung to unveil their Evolution Kit at CES 2013

CES doesn’t even start until next week but already the big players have started making announcements. Samsung have started talking about their Evolution Kit and it looks rather interesting.

Samsung%20Unveils%20Evolution%20Kit%20at%20CES%202013_1(1)

This is what Samsung said:

The Evolution Kit, which has been introduced for the first time at CES 2012, is an innovative concept that enables Samsung 2012 Smart TV to evolve into Samsung’s new 2013 Smart TVs. By simply attaching the Evolution Kit device into the back of a Samsung Smart TV, consumers can enjoy the latest features that the 2013 Smart TVs have to offer.

With hardware enhancements, such as CPU, memory and GPU up to the level of the latest Smart TV, users can enjoy faster speeds for browsing the Internet and multitask by using apps while watching TV.

In addition, Samsung’s Smart Interaction features such as voice control and motion control will be enhanced. Once the Evolution Kit is attached to the slot, 2012 Smart Hub is transformed to 2013 version. Every year, consumers will now be able to enjoy the latest services with Samsung’s Smart TVs.

The actual figure of Evolution Kit is finally revealed for the first time at CES 2013. Samsung will demonstrate the wonderful change that with its attachment to the TV, the new 2013 Smart Hub shows five different panels where consumers can enjoy a wide range of content including Live TV programs, VODs, apps and Internet.

The Evolution Kit is the optimal solution for users as it allows them to always experience the latest service of Samsung Smart TV with their existing 2012 Smart TVs even though hardware or software specifications continue to improve in the future.

“Evolution Kit has opened a new era of Smart TV and completed a true Smart TV with its innovative concept, which fits in the rapidly changing IT trends”, said Sunny Lee, executive vice president of Visual Display Sales & Marketing Team, Samsung Electronics. “Consumers can enjoy the latest features and services every year without having to purchase a brand new set. Samsung Smart TV users will enjoy Timeless TV that transcends time with Evolution Kit.”

We will be at CES 2013 next week and will bring you more on this, and other stories throughout the week.

Review of Little Big Planet Karting from United Front Games

0

Arguably the flagship of the PS3, and definitely a worthy reason to own one, Little Big Planet is a great franchise. The entire ethos of Little Big Planet is play, create, share. The original LBP gave huge amounts of freedom to the player to the point where I wondered what the point of LBP2 was. But then I went on LBP2 and found infinite possibilities and polish to make Mr Miyagi proud. A quick look on the LBP2 community page shows what clever and/or creative players are capable of given Media Molecules powerful engine. So onto Little Big Planet Karting.

PLAY

The tutorial is a little long-winded and unnecessary but I assume this is to make the game friendly to its wide target audience and its all-encompassing age range. It’s not particularly pretty, but it gets the job done and lets you have a bit of a practice before the real game begins.

1332434451_littlebigplanet-karting-playstation-3-ps3-1332429171-003

Weapons can be picked up by driving over them on the track and can be used to boost you through the race, attack rivals or defend yourself against the attacks of your foes. Unfortunately this doesn’t really work out very well. If you’ve used your item and have nothing equipped you will be repeatedly attacked and therefore re-spawned and therefore eventually lose.

The two items that propel you around the track quickly are very useful. Apart from when they slam you into an insta-death obstacle or a wall that ensures you wasted your time, if not setting you back from before you used the item. Combined with the constant sucker punches this can lead to a very frustrating experience at times.

Little-Big-Planet-Karting-screenshot-3

The track design is actually very good and the LBP style can be seen all over the track as well as the cut scenes that resemble those from other LBP titles. There isn’t anything jaw dropping but it looks solid and the driving mechanics are good.

CREATE

When you first enter create mode you are given a brief and informative video narrated, of course, by the great Stephen Fry. It’s enough to get started and means you don’t spend a couple of hours before starting to create. The other tutorials are available for you to view whenever you’re ready to move onto the more advanced stuff. Its easy and satisfying to lay out your track and by default the game adds everything you need to get it working, although you can change anything you wish at your will.

1

You can then work on beautification and adding off-road shortcuts or perils for you mini-racers to avoid. But that’s the end of it. Ultimately the options available to a player on LBP2 just can’t be in LBP Karting because, well, it’s a Karting game. After choosing the layout and appearance of your track and placing a few prize bubbles, weapons, jumps and perils your done. By definition it cannot have the same level of creation as its Media Molecule predecessors.

SHARE

The community page works the same as on previous LBP titles and allows you to use tags as filters, type in a text search, play a Developers “Pick” or just hit quick play. With the amount of levels available it’s impossible to play them all and therefore impossible to vouch for them all but the selection I played were very good.

What I missed was the surprise I could have on the LBP and LBP2 community section as you never quite new what was coming but you did know it had the potential to be anything at all. LBP Karting is just a case of finding what style of track you’re about to play and then playing it. There’s only so excited you can be when you are told what is coming in the title of the game.

customization

Technically speaking the sharing works fine and there is a good community on LBP Karting just as there is in the core LBP games. It’s easy to find levels and get in there and start playing them. LBP has always relied on its community to support it and LBP Karting does not disappoint in this respect.

VISUALS

The graphics look nice and adhere to the very stylized look we have become accustomed to in Little Big Planet games. Level design is smooth and the customizations on the carts and Sackboy are slick. The effects on the weapons are probably the best thing to look at, the rocket trails in particular are surprisingly cool. There’s nothing particularly new, but it looks good, works well and is exactly what we have come to expect from LBP.

SOUND

Run of the mill background music and inevitably repetitive kart sounds don’t make LBP Karting an exciting choice for your sound system. It has again stuck with the style though and has some distinctively LBP sound effects at work.

CONCLUSION

It’s very difficult not to compare Little Big Planet Karting with Little Big Planet. I’m abundantly aware that it’s not even in the same genre, but it is going to garner interest from the same audience of gamers. It seems like a strange franchise to skin a karting game with and at first one would assume this has been done to piggy back of Little Big Planet’s success.

Maybe United Front Games aren’t good enough to make a Karting game without using an already established title. Maybe Media Molecule needed help to raise awareness of the Little Big Planet titles. Yeah maybe not then. United Front Games are or course in actuality behind the much-loved ModNation Racers which is an entirely more competent karting game than LBP Karting and if you own a PS3 and haven’t owned or at least been on Little Big Planet you’re an anomaly. I’m not sure what niche audience this game is aimed at or if it even exists.

Although frustrating at times Little Big Planet Karting isn’t entirely awful. It’s a cross-over that has left me confused and a little bit less proud of the PS3’s Little Big Planet exclusive. If you want a karting game get ModNation Racers, if you want a Little Big Planet game get Little Big Planet 2, you won’t regret either of them.

The game therefore remains dazed and confused, unsure of its direction in limbo, along with its score.

Little Big Planet Karting is available now only on the Playstation 3.

Hands-on review of the Fractal Design Node 304 Computer Case

Back in June we told you about the new Node cases from Fractal Design. We got our hands on the Node 304 case and it’s time for our review.

CDW Review of the Fractal Design Node 304 Computer Case - 6

The Node 304 Case

Here is how Fractal Design describe the Node 304:

The Node 304 is the latest compact computer chassis from Fractal Design featuring a unique modular interior for outstanding configurability.

The Node 304 accommodates up to six hard drives. Unused mounting brackets can removed to allow for long graphic cards, additional airflow or more space for organizing cables. Additionally, it is equipped with three hydraulic bearing fans, easy-to-clean air filters in all intakes and two front USB 3.0 ports.

Featuring hybrid functionality, the Node 304 case is ideally used as a cool-running file server, a stylish and quiet home theatre PC or a powerful gaming system highlighting minimalistic and stunning Scandinavian design and maximum functionality.

Who Are Fractal Design?

This is how Fractal Design describe themselves:

The concept – Design

The concept of Fractal Design is to provide products with an extraordinary design level, without compromising the important factors of quality, functionality and pricing. The computer of today has come to play a central role in most people’s home, creating a demand for appealing design of the computer itself and its accessories.
Our main product areas are computer enclosures, power supplies, cooling, and Media Center-products, such as Home Theatre-enclosures, keyboards and remote controls.

Designed and engineered in Sweden

All Fractal Design products have been thoroughly designed, tested and specified in our Swedish head quarter. The well known ideas of Scandinavian design can be found through all of our products; a minimalistic but yet striking design – less is more.

Visions and goals

Our vision is to have a constant, healthy growth together with our partners worldwide. Our goal is to be widely recognized for our designed products and to have them available in all major market regions within EU and US. We should be a good alternative to the already established retail brands of today. It’s of great importance for us that our partners understand the values of Fractal Design, therefore we are putting great effort into choosing the right partners from the start. We will work actively to maintain sales territories and profitable business for our partners.

The way to reach our goals

In the competitive market of today, it’s not enough to just provide excellent products. Regular and well planned marketing activities in close cooperation with the channel and the available media, are key points to succeed. We are well experienced in marketing brands in the IT business, and we will use this to create efficient marketing tools – to gain a bigger market share and good earning possibilities for our channel.

My 3 hour date with Lara Croft – a preview of the new Tomb Raider game

We were recently invited by Square Enix to play the first three hours of the new Tomb Raider game, and here are our spoiler-free thoughts on it.

969911_WolfAttack_02

The new Tomb Raider game is set around Lara’s first big adventure and is a reboot of the popular franchise, so anything can happen.

The game starts off after the ship that Lara is on breaks apart and she and her crew find themselves on an island inhabited by some dangerous animals and some not very friendly people.

In fact, when we first see Lara she is tied up, hanging upside down and in a lot of danger.

Upon helping her to free herself she utters the words “This is going to hurt” and she isn’t wrong as she falls to the floor and impales herself on a spike.

969809_SideTomb_02

And it’s not long after this that poor battered, bruised and bleeding Lara is attacked and then its a non stop rollercoaster with Lara trying to figure out where she is, where her friends are who these people are who are trying to kill her. And oh yes, try to stay alive!

969707_KingsHutCombat

Throughout the island there are base camps. These are areas that Lara can stop and take a breather and use any experience points she has gained so far to increase her skills. There are multiple upgrades available in the form of both survivor upgrades and hunter upgrades. Each can be useful at different times throughout the game and so it is up to you what you upgrade and when, but there are certain upgrades you will need to make pretty quickly if you want to survive on the island.

9700HandgunUpgrade

Whilst Lara is at a base camp we are often treated to elements of the backstory via Lara replaying videos recorded in her friend Sam’s video camera (which she recovers pretty early on in the game). These videos give us insight into the expedition and to the various characters. You can choose to skip these if you wish but its more interesting to watch them.

9703Wounded

Lara also gets advice from remembering her lessons with her mentor Roth (who is on the island with her and we pretty soon meet up with and need to help). There is even a great line from Lara when she meets up with Roth and calls him “a Northern bastard”.

As well as trying to figure out what’s going on and to find her friends, along with a way off the island, there are also relics that can be found, and hidden tombs to be explored. I don’t want to go into any real details on these in fear of spoiling some surprises, but there is a lot for Lara to do!

9701VillageHub

The first time I got to play this new Tomb Raider was back at Gamescom in August. I had the chance to play about an hour of the game (that hour being a part of the three hours I got to play this time around). The first public outing for parts of that hour of gameplay was at Eurogamer in September. One thing I noticed playing these three hours was there were a few subtle and some not so subtle changes already.

One example being in the early gameplay, there is a sequence when Lara finds her friend Sam and she isn’t alone. Lara quickly figures out that the guy isn’t to be trusted and he pulls a knife and takes off with Sam (see the image below).

9233Confrontation copy

In this new version that doesn’t happen. Lara does find Sam and this guy, who claims to be a teacher, but this time Lara falls asleep, and when she wakes up they are both gone.

That’s not to say this will be in the final game, its possible that it will change again, but I like that Crystal Dynamics are changing even little elements of the game to make it better.

969202_A_New_Gun

One element of the game that really draws you in is the music. Jason Graves has done an amazing job of scoring the new soundtrack and it really gives the game a cinematic feel.

There are a number of QTEs (quick time elements) in the game where something happens to Lara and you have to very quickly tap a button, or do something else with the controller to stop her from being killed. Originally I was a little concerned that there might be too many QTEs in the game and that it would detract from the gameplay, but I am happy to say that during the 3 hours of play I didn’t once feel that. There were a couple of times that poor Lara died because I wasn’t quick enough – sometimes I didn’t feel I even had enough time to react, but this was a preview build so I’m not too worried about that either.

969403_Inferno

As well as QTE, there are a number of puzzles in the game that need solving if Lara is to move on, and they start almost immediately. Some are fairly obvious and its just a case of figuring out how to do them, and some are just down right sneaky (well done Crystal Dynamics). Again, I was concerned that they would all be really obvious or tell you exactly what you needed to do so that you just went through the motions, but this wasn’t the case.

9702VillageZipline

There is an element in the game called Survival Instinct. Basically what this does is provide hints and guidance if you are a bit stuck. It is completely optional and you don’t have to use it, but there were a few times I would have been stuck without it.

What’s different in this new Tomb Raider game from all the previous Tomb Raider games is that Lara is hurt and scared and she comes across vulnerable, and that’s certainly not the gun totting fearless Lara we are used to. And actually that is a good thing, because she had to start her journey somewhere and it makes for a much more interesting story now.

969302_Hunted

The first time she has to kill someone she is really affected by it, it’s not something she wanted to do, but its something she had to do in order to survive.

And I really think that Camilla Luddington, who is the voice of Lara has done a great job.

Before I knew it my three hours were up, it really did fly by and I really wanted to carry on, but alas I will have to wait to finish the game  – is it the 5th of March yet?

This is what Major Nelson has posted:

I wanted to update everyone that the Xbox LIVE Cloud Saved Games feature is back online. The Xbox Operations team has been working around the clock to get the issues resolved. I also wanted to pass along the below note from Alex Garden and let you know what we’re doing for those that were affected by the issue.

We want to thank all of our Xbox LIVE members impacted by the Cloud Saved Games service issue for your patience and understanding. It took longer than we expected to get back to full performance as we needed to ensure the integrity of everyone’s game saves. Whether you couldn’t access your game saves for a couple of hours or a couple of days, we sincerely apologize for the delay and inconvenience. We will be automatically applying a one-month extension to the Xbox LIVE Gold memberships of everyone who was impacted. We can assure you we’ll also be doing a thorough post mortem to help prevent this from happening again.

As always, I welcome your feedback. Game on!
