Guild Wars 2 Experience Site and Trailer Tease A ‘Final Battle’

0

NCSOFT and ArenaNet, today launched an online experience site and a new video to set the stage for a “final battle” to retake Lion’s Arch from Scarlet Briar. Scarlet is the super villain responsible for laying siege to the major trading hub in the last Guild Wars 2 living world release, “Escape from Lion’s Arch”. Since the release premiered on 18th February, opening with Scarlet’s dramatic attack, players have been trying to evacuate the city and save as many of its citizens as possible. Now, with the next living world release “Battle for Lion’s Arch” on the horizon and slated for 4th March, players can begin the journey that readies them to take the war to Scarlet.

One leg of that journey is the Guild Wars 2Living World Atlas”, an interactive site designed to lead fans through a process of discovery that illustrates the game’s current living world storyline. It’s a narrative that began more than a year ago when players first recognised Scarlet as the enemy, seeing her become a major threat to Tyria and ultimately rally an army of dark allies to attack Lion’s Arch. Through the “Living World Atlas”, users explore this storyline as it unfolded in the game through videos, art, screenshots, audio clips and other content. They also uncover new content from the coming release “Battle for Lion’s Arch,” getting glimpses into what exactly is Scarlet’s nefarious aim and how her plan may play out come 4th March.

NCSOFT and ArenaNet also today released a video trailer that teases “Battle for Lion’s Arch”. The video shows the continuing devastation of the city by Scarlet’s army, made up of Tyria’s most threatening races and an arsenal of deadly war machines. Central to her attack has been a massive airship drill, which as the video reveals continues to hover over the city and bore deep beneath its surface. In a fitting end, the trailer becomes a call to arms, exhorting players to “gather as one and take back Lion’s Arch”, the historic yet now devastated city dating back to the first Guild Wars.

LEGO The Hobbit_GoblinTown16

LEGO The Hobbit will be based on the first two films of The Hobbit Trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.  Following the storyline of the two films, LEGO The Hobbit will take players on quests throughout Middle-earth, joining Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, and Thorin Oakenshield and Company in their exciting adventures toward the Dwarven Kingdom of Erebor.

In LEGO The Hobbit, kids and families will be able to take on the form of their favorite Hobbit characters, including Bilbo, Gandalf, and all of the Dwarves: Thorin, Fíli, Kíli, Óin, Glóin, Dwalin, Balin Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori and Ori.  Each has his own special – and quite hilarious – ability: For instance, Bombur can be used as a trampoline that enables his companions “belly-bounce” out of danger!

LEGO The Hobbit_GoblinTown12

Players will visit key locations from the films, including Bag End, Bilbo’s Hobbit-hole in Hobbiton, trek through the treacherous High Pass over The Misty Mountains, and explore the depths of Goblin-town, Mirkwood and Rivendell. Twitch Coming at last to Xbox One for Titanfall launch (Updated)

Updated

Microsoft has now confirmed that Twitch is coming to Xbox One from 11th March .

Original Post

At last the Twitch gameplay streaming is coming to the Xbox One next month, according to the Associated Press. With this report it says the feature, which has been available on the PS4 since launch but not on the Xbox One, is scheduled to be patched in when Respawn’s Titanfall is released in North America on 11th March and the 14th March in the UK. So look for the patch in the next Xbox One update coming around the 4th March.

Twitch logo

With Twitch on Xbox One it will also allow users to archive games streams and initiate streaming broadcasts via voice commands.
“It’s complete integration,” Twitch CEO Emmett Shear told the AP. “It’s exciting because we’ve never had the ability to broadcast from a console like this with such a deep level of integration.

With the idea of being able to join a broadcasters’ party is really cool, and it’s another step in the direction of interacting more closely with broadcasters.

“That’s a very certain type of experience,” said Xbox chief marketing and strategy officer Yusuf Medhi of Twitch on PS4. “For us, we thought that was too limiting for what our fans would want. Our fans really want the full next-gen service, so that’s why we decided to take our time, do it right and have it come out in this fashion.”

Friends Reunited for Pacman to the future

With PAC-MAN has chomped his way through consoles, films, music and fashion over the past 34 years, but he hasn’t stopped there…

pacman and sonic

With Commuters were left stunned whilst driving along the M4 on Monday night (24th February) to discover the friendly yellow character standing 80 feet tall and plastered across the iconic SEGA building in Chiswick, West London.

Namco Bandai Games UK team wanted to reunite PAC-MAN with one of his old pals ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ for the launch of PAC-MAN and the Ghostly Adventures video game on 7th March.

The plug was pulled 5 minutes in, however, when security guards were alerted by local authorities as this was a stunt clearly designed to shock, delight and decorate Sega’s impressive building that graces West London.

“We wanted to be cheeky, create some fun, but obviously do it quietly. Something that’s hard to do in the game’s industry, but slightly easier at midnight. We hope Sega aren’t offended, more delighted” commented Lee Kirton PR & Marketing Director Bandai Namco Games UK.

Robert Leney, Data Broker, 34 said  “I’ve been travelling home on the M4 every night for the last 15 years and the massive Sonic character has always been a marker that I’m entering London. I was in complete shock to see it had been taken over by PAC MAN. It’s all good though as I love seeing my two favourite childhood video game characters reunited again.”

The projectors used were the most powerful in the UK and produce a 30m wide x 25m high projection area.

Thief Interview with Eidos-Montreal in London 18th February 2014

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with two of the guys from Eidos-Montréal to talk about their forthcoming game THIEF.

thief_thumb_thumb

Time has moved on. Power has shifted. New greed replaces the old.
But to remain free in The City of chains – that is still the greatest prize.
First I stole to survive… then I survived to steal.
I am one man; I hear your secrets, see your hidden truths.
I am the shadows, the dark and deadly, the velvet night. You will not see me coming.
I am Garrett….What’s yours is mine.

There is a rising tide of fear in The City. Hatred saturates every stone and whilst the rich prosper, the less fortunate face misery and repression. Ravaged with sickness and famine, they wait for something to change.

Into this shadowy world steps Garrett, the Master Thief in a first-person adventure featuring intelligent design that allows players to take full control, with freedom to choose their path through the game’s levels and how they approach and overcome each challenge.

Garrett is entangled in the growing layers of conflict between Baron Northcrest and the oppressed masses led by Orion, the voice of the people. In a City on the brink of revolution, Garrett’s skills are all he can trust as he walks the fine line between politics and the people.

THIEF is due for release on Windows PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on 28th February 2014 in Europe and other PAL territories.

And don’t forget to check out our review of Thief here.

Review: Thief

3

“Smoke lowering down from chimney-pots, making a soft black drizzle, with flakes of soot in it as big as full-grown snow-flakes — gone into mourning, one might imagine, for the death of the sun.” – Charles Dickens, Bleak House. Okay maybe that was too much. Plus Dickens is describing London and not Thief’s fictitious city but the comparisons are numerable and blatant. And if there’s a better way to describe the mood of Thief I don’t know what it is.

It’s been 10 years since we last saw Garrett, the man who robs from the rich and forgets about the second part because it’s boring, and I for one think he deserves an appropriately brooding introduction. And so does Thief. Wasting no time at all you slip into Garrett’s sneaking shoes and take to the rooftops. After a few pacy gameplay sections and a handful of cutscenes you’re free to explore and/or progress at your will.

ONLINE_240114_ss08_1389627972

Almost immediately you will have the option to go out and complete various side quests or ignore them as you desire. There’s plenty to do and explore in Thief’s city and considering the objectives are usually based around breaking into somewhere and stealing something there is an impressive amount of variation.

In a very early side quest I found myself breaking into a house directly into a bedroom containing a sleeping woman. I left her be and went to work opening drawers, cabinets and picking the lock on her bedside table. Whilst picking the lock it became apparent we weren’t alone. I could see nothing except the cabinet I was attempting to relieve of its contents but so clear where the footsteps that I had no doubt I was about to be rumbled. At which point you must decide to either be quick and run or hide. I hid. And then bludgeoned what later turned out to be the girl’s father unconscious. After the coast was clear I turned to the combination wall safe. To find the combination I needed to find a document and then search the area. I escaped with my objective completed and the woman still deep in slumber.

For a side mission that probably took me about 20 minutes I was so happy. I’d had my fair share of lock picking and earned a decent ‘wage’. I experienced that tenseness only possible in a stealth game. And then I completed a simple puzzle, but one that I figured out myself. The combination wasn’t highlighted in bright colours nor did the safe magically open once my character had ‘read’ the answer. It was brilliant, and in the long run made up such a small part of Thief.

But ironically it’s the side missions that kept me coming back for more. My only real gripe with Thief is that a good portion of the main missions end up with the endless looting of many, many small boxes, cabinets and drawers whereas the side missions tend to break the pace and allow for a little more freedom between looting sessions. Also if you’re not paying close attention it’s very easy to lose the plot. I certainly enjoyed the main missions but they could have done with just a bit more freedom, like the rest of the game.

ONLINE_240114_ss07_1389627969

In-between completing objectives you will need to traverse Thief’s city as an open world. There are tons of small allies, vents to crawl through, gaps to squeeze between and walkways to skulk from. And while all these things make for a fantastically intricate city to navigate they can be very confusing initially. After some time exploring you soon learn where everything is and it’s nice to be rewarded for learning a map’s intricacies but early on it can be a nightmare.

Luckily there is a very able control scheme that hasn’t let me down at all yet. There’s no frustrating repeatedly climbing the same wall crap – I’m looking at you Assassin’s Creed. If I want to climb somewhere I’m confident Garrett will do it as I instruct on my first try. If I don’t want to he won’t go jumping to his death after 10 minutes of gameplay. The combat takes a bit of getting used to but it’s a last resort and Garrett feels intentionally underpowered when all-out fighting. He’s a thief not a brawler after all. Which I’ve no doubt fans of the franchise will be happy to hear.

Any returning Thief fan should also be pleased with the difficulty settings available. Above the standard easy, normal and hard settings Thief offers even more customization if you want a real challenge. Things like not allowing any knockouts or alerts (at all) amongst many others, allow you to customize your experience. Eidos have clearly realised what this franchise means to its hardcore following and catered for those players too rather than excluding them to allow new players in. All are welcome in Thief and there is undoubtedly a difficulty to suit all. And if your done there’s always the challenge mode to keep you busy. So many games are unsuccessful because they’re either too difficult or too easy. It’s simple really, let me decide. And that’s just what Thief does.

ONLINE_240114_ss05_1389627967

Beyond getting the difficulty settings right I imagine Thief also posed a great challenge to create interesting visuals. We all like vibrant colours and lush landscapes but to create an atmosphere as impressive as Thief’s that’s just not possible. A clever use of what little colour there is and an obvious penchant for lighting effects are what keep Thief’s melancholy colour palette from sucking the life out of the game.

At one point I was deftly sneaking around an alleyway waiting to lift a guard’s purse from his belt when I found myself stopping to admire someone’s work. It wasn’t a multi-headed death beast from the Mogadon Cluster (if you got that reference you’re as sad as me). There where no antiheroes interrogating a bloody suspect. It was just a wet stone.

Many of which make up the Victorian style buildings. I could almost feel the cold and smell the damp concrete. Turning around a slither of moonlight had fought its way through rickety wooden beams and caught the particles in the air. The ever-present clock tower and the moon hung like dual Suns in the night sky. And then I return to playing the game stealing from the guard before sliding away down one of the countless dark alleys littered with beggars reaching out to me.

And that’s how Thief plays. It feels like your in a developer diary. You want to slowly pan the camera around and walk rather than run. And if you do and let yourself become engrossed in Thief’s world you will be greatly rewarded. It’s let down on occasion by rigid level design and repeated objectives but overall Thief is an absolutely brilliant experience.
