LaCie Introduces its First Thunderbolt 2 Rackmount Storage Solution

Las Vegas – LaCie, the premium brand from Seagate Technology (NASDAQ: STX), announced at the 2014 NAB Show the release of its first Thunderbolt™ 2 rackmount storage solution: the LaCie™ 8big Rack Thunderbolt 2. Compact and stylish, the LaCie 8big Rack features up to eight 6TB 7200RPM HDDs from Seagate, for an impressive 48TB in a mere 1U size. Delivering speeds of up to 1330MB/s*, it is the most powerful plug and play rackmount solution for 4K video editing.

Thunderbolt 2 Speeds

Thanks to Thunderbolt 2, the 8big Rack delivers ample bandwidth to support 10-bit, 4K footage. With this kind of performance, videographers can work directly from RAW files in Apple® Final Cut Pro® or Adobe® Premiere®, get maximum quality from footage and see edits in real time.

Hardware and Data Reliability

The LaCie 8big Rack features data and component redundancy so that users will experience zero downtime in the unlikely case of hardware failure. Fans, disks and PSU** are fully redundant, hot swappable*** and user-serviceable. The LaCie 8big Rack also includes hardware RAID 5/6 for failure-proof data security that doesn’t compromise transfer speeds. Additionally, the hardware RAID controller means that users can connect the product to any workstation without losing the RAID configuration.

Stylish 1U Design

With professional rackmount storage, usability can be a huge differentiator among users. As a result, LaCie designed the 8big Rack to deliver extraordinary usability for professionals. It features a clean, slim, aluminum exterior that includes four or eight hard disks (up to 48TB) in a true 1U size. It provides easy access with gliding drawer functionality and a cable management arm. What’s more, the LaCie 8big Rack features no-fuss access to components and tool-free maintenance of fans, PSU, and disks. And with status indicator LEDs on the front and back, professionals can instantly identify hard drives that need to be replaced.

The LaCie 8big Rack has an innovative cooling system that prolongs component lifespan. It features three efficient, thermoregulated cooling fans to drive airflow. Air flows above and between the two rows of disks, from front to back, to conduct heat away from sensitive components.

Dual Thunderbolt ports

The LaCie 8big Rack features two Thunderbolt 2 ports for daisy chaining. This means that professionals can daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt rack units together, and then connect them with a single cable to a computer. The new Mac Pro® features six Thunderbolt 2 ports, which means that power users could connect up to 36 LaCie 8big Racks to a single workstation, enabling up to a surprising 1.7PB (1728TB) of capacity and speeds of greater than 3000MB/s. Now professionals can create a truly plug and play 4K video editing storage system that delivers increased capacity, incredible speed and unmatched convenience to their workflow.

The LaCie 8big Rack delivers unimaginable scale in half the space, a dramatically simpler setup, and unprecedented performance.

LaCie Enhances Award-Winning 5big with Thunderbolt 2 Technology and RAID 5

Las Vegas – LaCie, the premium brand from Seagate Technology (NASDAQ: STX), announced at the 2014 NAB Show a leap forward for its award-winning 5big. Now featuring Thunderbolt™ 2 technology, hardware RAID and industry-leading capacity, the new LaCie™ 5big is nearly two times faster – delivering speeds of up to 1050MB/s*. Thanks to Seagate’s new 6TB 7200RPM hard disks it boasts a 20% capacity increase, which makes it the most compact 30TB storage device on the market. With these advances, the new LaCie 5big gives video professionals huge capacity and ample bandwidth for improving 4K workflows right on the desktop.

Storage for the 4k era

As a result of Thunderbolt 2 technology, the LaCie 5big delivers incredible, sustained speeds of up to 1050MB/s. Connect three LaCie 5bigs in parallel to a new Mac Pro® for up to 90TB of capacity and speeds of up to 3000MB/s on a single workstation. This is enough bandwidth to edit several video streams in native 4K resolution. With this kind of speed, videographers working in Apple® Final Cut Pro® or Adobe® Premiere® get maximum quality from footage and see native 4K edits in real time.

“Having enough speed and capacity to back up and edit more than 100 terabytes of REDÒ 4K footage was one of our biggest challenges when self-producing the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis 2013 World Tour documentary series,” said director Jason Koenig. “LaCie’s 5bigs have been critical in allowing us to handle and cut on the tour bus with no issues. I haven’t used a more reliable drive.”

“At the 2014 NAB Show, there is a clear focus on 4K video,” said Jason Ziller, Marketing Director for Thunderbolt at Intel. “We are pleased to see critical players like LaCie introduce robust storage solutions, such as the new 5big, which emphasize the power of concurrent 4K video transfer and data delivery via Thunderbolt 2 capability.”

Raid for speed with security

The LaCie 5big offers a range of RAID modes that allow users to tailor the product to their needs. Its hardware RAID delivers sustained performance, better flexibility and the ability to connect the product to another computer while keeping the RAID configuration.

RAID modes 5 and 6 provide complete data protection against disk failure, while providing excellent speed and capacity. These features make the LaCie 5big an ideal solution for users that want to use a single storage product for both video editing and backup. In protected RAID modes, even in the case of disk failure, the LaCie 5big’s hot-swappable disks mean zero data loss or downtime.

Dual Thunderbolt ports

The LaCie 5big features two Thunderbolt 2 ports for daisy chaining. Professionals can daisy chain up to six Thunderbolt devices to a computer via a single cable (included). Thunderbolt 2 is also backward compatible, using the same cables and connectors as first-generation Thunderbolt** devices and computers. Professionals can now create a plug and play 4K video editing environment with increased capacity, incredible speed and convenience to their workflow.

Advanced Cooling And Long-Term Reliability

The LaCie 5big’s cutting-edge cooling system ensures long-term reliability by preventing overheating. The system consists of three key components: an innovative heat-dissipating aluminum casing, a Noctua® cooling fan, and jumbo heat exhausts. The ultra-quiet Noctua NF-P12 fan pulls heat away from the internal components while producing very little noise. Altogether, this professional cooling system makes the LaCie 5big incredibly reliable and perfect for even the most noise-sensitive creative environments. Additionally, the 5big casing is made from a seamless aluminum cast, acting as armor to protect internal components.

Availability

The new LaCie 5big, featuring Thunderbolt 2, will be available this quarter in 10, 20 or 30TB capacities through the LaCie online store and LaCie resellers. Pricing will be announced when the product is available for purchase. For more product information, visit www.lacie.com.

LaCie Revolutionizes Dual-Bay RAID Storage

LAS VEGAS – Today LaCie, the premium brand from Seagate Technology (NASDAQ: STX), debuted at the 2014 NAB Show its latest 2big with a host of features including Thunderbolt™ 2 technology, hardware RAID and a new industrial design. Speeds of up to 420MB/s* along with two 6TB 7200RPM hard disks from Seagate make the new LaCie™ 2big the fastest, highest capacity dual-bay external storage solution on the market. Plus, its all-new industrial design sets a new standard for versatility and reliability.

THUNDERBOLT 2 SPEED

The LaCie 2big features speeds of up to 420MB/s thanks to Thunderbolt 2, a hardware RAID controller and 7200RPM disks. With these speeds, videographers can edit multiple 2K uncompressed 10-bit streams or play back compressed 4K video. Digital photographers can browse massive RAW photo libraries with zero lag. And audio pros using software like Avid® Pro Tools® will notice much smoother audio mixing.

Hardware RAID

The LaCie 2big’s range of RAID modes gives users the flexibility to tailor the product to their needs. RAID 0** maximizes speed and capacity, while RAID 1 provides data protection if one disk fails. With hot-swappable disks, users can simply replace a disk – from the front – with zero data loss and no work interruption. The LaCie 2big even features JBOD, so users can see and work with each disk independently.

INNOVATIVE DESIGN

When reengineering the 2big’s industrial design from the ground up, LaCie, along with industrial designer Neil Poulton, focused on usability for professionals. Accessing disks from the front makes it faster and easier to remove and replace them. And front-facing disk status LEDs let busy professional easily keep track of disk health and RAID build status. The redesigned cooling system effectively diverts heat from components, ensuring long-term reliability. The ultra-quiet Noctua NF-A6x25 FLX thermoregulated fan keeps the product cool, while producing nearly no noise. Additionally, integrated cable locks prevent accidental disconnection of the interface and power cables without compromising the look and design of the product.

“I designed the new LaCie 2big as pure desktop architecture – a deceptively simple aesthetic to house the highest tech on the market,” said award-winning industrial designer Neil Poulton. “Like a marble Carlo Scarpa staircase, the details are precise and honed. The new LaCie 2big is a Bauhaus building for your desk. On rubber treads.”

VERSATILITY FOR PRO ENVIRONMENTS

With USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 2 interfaces, the LaCie 2big gets the best possible speeds on any late-model PC or Mac®. USB 3.0 backward compatibility means that users can connect the LaCie 2big to any standard computer***. With support for exFAT and hardware RAID, users can seamlessly connect the product to both PC and Mac computers while maintaining the RAID configuration.

Thunderbolt 2 continues to support daisy chaining up to six devices to a computer via a single cable (included in the box). This means that professionals can daisy chain up to five LaCie 2bigs plus a 4K display to a computer, bringing capacity, speed and convenience to the desktop. Thunderbolt 2 is also backward compatible and uses the same cables and connectors as first-generation Thunderbolt*** devices and computers.

AVAILABILITY

The LaCie 2big, featuring Thunderbolt 2, will be available this quarter in 6, 8 or 12TB capacities through the LaCie online store and LaCie resellers. Pricing will be announced when the product is available for purchase. For more product information, visit www.lacie.com.

WARRANTY

The LaCie 2big is protected by a three-year limited warranty. The warranty includes complimentary web-based resources, expert in-house technical support and worldwide repair and/or replacement coverage. Warranty extension and Advance Care Option can also be purchased. For details, visit www.lacie.com/warranties.

* These transfer rates were achieved using AJA System Test when connected to a 13″ MacBook Pro® with a 2.8GHz Intel® Core™ i7 processor and 8GB RAM. Actual data rates may vary depending on operating environment and other factors, such as RAID mode, RAID configuration, and disk capacity.

** Hot swapping will result in data loss in a RAID 0 array.

*** To achieve full interface bandwidth, connect the product to either a USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt 2 port on a computer or device.

NETGEAR RN102 Review Part One: Installation–UPDATED

NETGEAR was good enough to send along a RN102 NAS unit to review; this is Part One of the review where I perform the installation.  Read on for details!

5590_10151564910808705_2060550718_n

NETGEAR was good enough to send along a RN102 NAS unit to review; this is Part One of the review where I perform the installation.

If you have purchased a diskless unit, install your drives. There are two drive bays with locking caddies; flip open the drive cover door, release the caddy lock by pushing down, and slide out the caddy. Mount your drives in the caddies, reinsert them into the bay and lock the release lever.

If you have a unit with drives already mounted, or if you have already installed your disks, go ahead and plug the unit it, connecting the LAN cable to your network. I plugged mine into a CISCO SG-200-26 gigabit switch, which is connected to my router, and then powered on the NAS. Once the blue power LED is solid blue, you are ready for the next step.

Installation Using Internet Explorer

Open your browser of choice (I used Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 8.1), and point it at http://readycloud.netgear.com and you’ll see this:

clip_image002

Click Discover to find our RN102.

clip_image004

Click Setup to continue to set up the unit.

Installation Using RAIDar

This failed for me, so I had to resort to breaking out the RAIDar application on the included CD. Load the CD into your DVD/CD drive and open File Explorer.

clip_image006

Click Autorun.EXE.

clip_image008

Choose ReadyNAS RAIDar Utility.

Review: Warhammer 40K: Storm of Vengeance

0

Storm of Vengeance has already been available to play on mobile for quite a while now but now it’s available on PC too. From my experience the transition from mobile to PC is pretty difficult to get right. More often than not you end up with a game that costs more than its mobile counterpart that looks nice but essentially runs on hardware that far exceeds the game’s requirements. And whilst that is the case Storm of Vengeance comes in at only £6.99 on Steam, which is actually pretty reasonable. But anyway, onwards to the gameplay.

The basics are similar to PopCap’s fantastic Plants Vs Zombies which is certainly not a bad game to be compared with. There are five lanes and at the end of each you can deploy a building which produces cards that represent units for you to deploy in those lanes. You also have to consider generating Storm of Vengeance’s primary resource – ‘manpower’ for the Dark Angels and ‘Teef’ for the Orks. It’s fine having loads of unit cards to deploy but that doesn’t help you much if you can’t afford any of them.

gretchin_rush

So there is an element of planning and strategy to be had but with only five lanes it’s very easy to find balances and tactics that work every time. After learning the basics and playing a few levels I found that the same tactics would be useful for me long into the future. There were certain levels were the balancing act was a little tricky but selling a building and deploying a new one soon got things back on track. I would have preferred the resource acquisition to be a more difficult balancing act but there’s only so much we can expect from a lane defence game. If we’d had more lanes though that would work nicely. Considering both teams would have more of everything balancing would be minimal but the game would require more thought as to what buildings to place in those lanes.

But unfortunately that’s not the case and those tactics I mentioned using very early on are just as relevant at the end of the game. It’s a shame really that there isn’t room in Storm of Vengeance for that sense of increasing challenge that keeps things fresh because I thoroughly enjoyed my first few hours. And I got pretty hooked, largely because of upgrades that you unlock by completing missions. But just like your tactics your upgrades will reach maturity long before you complete the campaign.

And the campaign can feel a little repetitive. The written speeches that serve to move the plot forwards soon lost my attention; but admittedly that was mainly because I just wanted to get back into the action. And again the limits of a lane defence title hindered things from moving forwards. Each area is very similar with only a few changes to the background but no alterations to the gameplay.

doomed_gretchin

Once your done with the Dark Angels, who you will likely play as first, you can then move onto the Orks. Refreshingly they are surprisingly different from the Space Marines. Resources have different names and buildings but work almost the same – however units are different even beyond the obvious. The extent of Ork military strategy is ‘more units is betta’ while a few Dark Angels stomp about killing hordes of Orks. The simple, but expensive, upgrade system of the Marines is replaced by a frantic, fast paced and largely disposable system. The variation between the factions is impressive considering the limitations of the mobile origins of the game and it’s lane defence genre.

But it’s so frustrating that I unlocked all the upgrades so early. You have access to all the units very quickly. I can’t understand why there wasn’t a whole host of upgrades and units to unlock. The main reason I played for as long as I did was to level up and acquire unlocks but with only a handful of units and four upgrades for each it doesn’t last long. There are so many untapped units from the Warhammer 40K universe it’s criminal. Perhaps it’s out of the scope of Storm of Vengeance but tanks, bikes and Terminators instantly spring to mind and my Warhammer knowledge is rather dated now.

Storm of Vengeance is great fun and a decent addition to the underused lane strategy genre. Unfortunately it doesn’t follow through into the late game, or even mid game, with upgrades and units to acquire but rather lets itself stagnate all too quickly. The same goes for the strategy elements to the game that become simple and repetitive very early on.

ghaz_vs_dreadnought

With more units and upgrades there would have been way more to keep me interested. They wouldn’t even need to be all that clever. Just simple things like more unit health or faster resource generation would have given me something to aim for. And more lanes would definitely increase the capacity for strategy in a game like this.

So Storm of Vengeance is a lane strategy game that sadly has far too little strategy and not enough to keep you coming back. I certainly enjoyed my brief time with Storm of Vengeance although I wish it had been less brief. There’s certainly a feel that this is still a mobile game and that’s certainly where it belongs. As a PC title Storm of Vengeance needs quite a bit more content to be considered fully fledged, but it’s still a briefly enjoyable strategy game with Space Marines and Orks killing each other, and that’s fine by me.

New System Update to Roll Out Today for Xbox One

Today Microsoft has started to roll out another system update for the Xbox One. But new update is unlike the last two updates in the past, this one doesn’t add many major new features, but it does tweak some that are already there.

For a start the new update, adds 50Hz playback capabilities to the Blu-ray application, and also improvements to voice and motion controls on Kinect.

Xbox One update

The Kinect update adds some fine tuning, which includes some of the gesture functionality to reduce false positives on non-hand objects triggering gesture commands.

Video quality for Game DVR recordings has been improved. And there is now a game save progress bar to give you an idea of how long it’s taking. You can also now tell what apps and games are being updated or have been recently.

Notifications to tell you when your friends and favourites sign in to Xbox Live have been added. While firmware for the controller and headset adaptor has been updated to reduce audio static and wireless connectivity.

Here’s the final breakdown of the features rolling out to Xbox One systems starting today and over the next few days:

  • Game and app saves and updates. A game save progress bar will show you the status of your game saves. You will also be able to easily tell what games and apps are being updated or have been updated recently.
  • Friends improvements. Notifications will be added to see when favorites and friends sign in to Xbox Live. This was one of the most frequently requested features, so we made it a priority to include it in this update. Also, friends who are in multiplayer will be identified in the friends list.
  • Kinect voice and motion improvements will continue to be fine-tuned for quality and reliability of Xbox One commands. For example, we’ve updated some of the gesture functionality to reduce false positives on non-hand objects triggering gesture commands.
  • Improved GameDVR video quality through compression algorithm improvements.
  • Blu-ray player supports 50 Hz video output for content recorded at 50 Hz. We’ll also be updating the Blu-ray Player app in the coming days to round out these improvements.
  • Controller and headset adapter firmware updates will reduce audio static and improve wireless connectivity.
  • Silent reboot after system updates and system update on demand now available. If your console is in Instant On mode, the update will happen automatically and return to standby upon completion. This means you won’t need to power on your console after an update moving forward. If you want to take future updates when available without waiting for your console to do it on its own, we’ve added this option under system settings and you’ll be able to use it next update. It will only show as available when there is an update to take.
