LG G3 Coming Early July

LG has today announced the much rumoured and leaked smartphone the LG G3, and with launch events taking place in six cities worldwide London, New York, San Francisco, Seoul, Singapore and Istanbul LG G3 aims to redefine the definition of a global smartphone.

LG G3

LG developed the idea under the Simple is the New Smart concept, LG G3 is a culmination of consumer research based on LG’s The LG G3 was empowered with the best of what current technology has to offer, providing consumers with a user experience more ambitious than anything offered before by LG.

The smartest innovation in a fast evolving smartphone market is creating harmony between advanced technology and a simplified user experience,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG G3 is the result of our effort to actualize that idea into a tangible product. And we are extremely pleased with the result.”

Highlights of the new G3 include

5.5-inch Quad HD display with 538ppi with four times the resolution of HD and almost two times higher resolution than a Full HD display
13MP OIS+ (Optical Image Stabilizer Plus) camera with a revolutionary Laser Auto Focus that can shoot stunningly sharp images in a fraction of the time required by conventional phone cameras.
Polished metallic skin on the rear cover that is lightweight, fingerprint-proof and most of all,
Floating Arc form factor that feels incredibly comfortable in one hand and incorporates the innovative design heritage of the Rear Key
Simple is the New Smart concept of the G3.

True-to-Life Viewing Experience

LG’s reputation in the display arena is second to none and the development of the G3’s breath taking Quad HD display was the result of years of innovation in display technology. With a pixel density of 538ppi, the G3’s Quad HD display sets new viewing standard producing images that are sharper and clearer than traditional smartphone displays. At 5.5-inches, LG G3 boasts a screen ratio of 76.4 percent with thin bezels all around so the phone feels as comfortable in the hand as a smaller traditional smartphone.
The high resolution display on the G3 also required LG engineers to pair it with battery technology that was just as innovative. LG equipped the G3 with a 3,000mAh removable battery and advanced optimization technologies to further maximize battery efficiency. By replacing the metal in the battery cathode with graphite, LG engineers were able to extend the lifespan of the G3’s battery. The result is a battery that can keep up with the Quad HD display’s ultra-high performance without losing steam in the middle of the day.

The G3’s advanced 13MP OIS+ camera is designed to quickly and easily capture life’s special moments as they occur, not necessarily when you want them to occur. This is made possible with G3’s innovative Laser Auto Focus, the first of its kind in the smartphone industry. This technology enables the G3 to capture the best moment — even in low light — by measuring the distance between the subject and the camera using a laser beam. So no more fuzzy pictures of your son scoring his first football goal and or missed shots because your camera couldn’t decide quickly enough which toddler in the playground to focus on. Combined with the proven and popular OIS+ technology first seen in the G Pro 2, the G3 is sure to impress even the most discerning shutterbugs.

LG also simplified the process of actually capturing those special moments. Rather than having to focus on the subject in preview mode and then pressing the shutter button, with the G3, tapping the subject to focus will simultaneously also trigger the shutter. What’s more, the G3’s 2.1MP front camera incorporates several new enhancements such as a larger image sensor and larger aperture for more light throughput and better-looking selfies. A unique twist has been added to the standard timed selfie mode by incorporating gesture controls — when ready to shoot, simply clench your hand into a fist and the G3 will recognize the gesture and begin the automatic three-second countdown. It couldn’t get any simpler than that.

For video, the G3 offers superior sound quality with instinctive microphones that measure the environment to identify the optimal audio level for the clearest recording. And with the built-in 1W speaker with Boost AMP, users can enjoy videos and music accompanied by richer sounds and clearer tones.
The Floating Arc design of the G3 with its ergonomic arch and slim side profile provides an extremely comfortable grip for everyday one-handed use. The Rear Key continues to anchor LG’s innovative design language, with a newly designed power key and volume buttons as well as more premium quality materials and finish. LG also refined sophisticated technical features and advancements located on the rear by arranging them in a clean and singular layout consistent with the G3’s well-balanced design language.

LG-G3 Mulit colours

The stylish metallic skin with matte finish which keeps the G3 looking clean and fingerprint-free will be offered in five vibrant colours: Metallic Black, Silk White, Shine Gold, Moon Violet and Burgundy Red.

LG new external design, LG adopted a minimalistic user interface design with flat graphics. The circular motif of the graphic assets in the new UI was derived from the shape and concept of LG’s logo, reflecting its unique visual style and identity.

Simplified UX to Reflect Simple Pleasures

With advanced core technologies, LG took its Learning from You approach to a new higher level with new UX features to offer G3 users a unique experience unlike any previous LG smartphone. Highlights include:

Adaptive technology learns as you type for faster input with less mistakes. Smart Keyboard reduces input errors by up to 75 percent by tracking and analysing typing habits and intuitively “knowing” what word the user intended to type. The height of the keyboard can also be adjusted to better fit the user’s hands and position of the thumbs. Individual keys can also be customized with frequently used symbols for even faster input.

Like a personal assistant, Smart Notice provides suggestions and recommendations based on user behaviour, phone usage patterns and location to offer user information when it’s needed the most. Smart Notice can remind you of a call you declined earlier and ask if you would like to call that person back. If you have a large number of un used files or apps on the G3 taking up valuable space, Smart Notice will ask if you would like to delete or uninstall them. But what sets Smart Notice apart from other personal assistants is its natural language capabilities. For example, instead of just displaying today’s temperature and weather forecast, Smart Notice will make a recommendation such as, “You may want to take an umbrella today since it will rain this evening”.

Understanding the importance of maintaining and securing confidential data when smartphones are shared, misplaced, lost or stolen, the LG G3 offers a number of enhanced security features such as:

  • Knock Code enables users to unlock their device with a pattern of taps. Merging security and convenience, users can create a personalized code that can be entered anywhere on the screen. With the G3, users have the option of being able to use KnockON to wake the screen to check the time as well as enter the home screen directly via Knock Code Content Lock keeps personal files safe and hidden from view when sharing the G3 with friends. s internal memory or on the microSD card.
  • Kill Switch gives G3 owners the ability to disable their phones remotely in the event of theft. The Kill Switch also allows content on the G3 to be wiped so personal information won’t be compromised. Kill Switch also includes antivirus scanning and remote wipe and lock, among other essential features.

The LG G3 is a smartphone I’m really looking forward to hold and use this year, no fixed date or pricing for launch of the product out early July this year.

Monochroma launch trailer

Monochroma_Logo_Large (1)

Nowhere Studios today unveiled a new trailer for Monochroma, its cinematic dystopian puzzle platformer, that will launch on Windows PC, Mac and Linux on Steam on tomorrow the 28th May. In Monochroma players are transported to a dystopian state during the 1950’s, after two brothers witness a horrific crime committed by an evil corporation.

Monochroma 2014-05-13 21-22-11-55

Without cutscenes, text or spoken words, players must delve intellectually and emotionally into the story to help the brothers work together to progress past mind-bending puzzles and save the world from tyranny.

Inspired by the developers’ childhood memories of moving from the countryside to urban Istanbul and the “Gezi Protests” of 2013, the most violently oppressed protest in modern Turkey, players discover the environment and follow the story through a carefully constructed black-and-white palette with splashes of red.

[vimeo 96219999 w=500 h=281]

As a result, the story is instantly understandable by players of all nationalities – without any localization required.   Spread over four chapters, discover vast ghettos built upon thousands of tenement buildings that reach into the clouds, a labyrinth of sewer tunnels, factories bellowing out industrial smoke and a city sized zeppelin hovering in the sky.

Monochroma 2014-05-13 20-50-50-29

The puzzles encountered in Monochroma are realistic and use physics to naturally blend with the environment.   Another Monochroma trademark is the relationship between the two brothers.

Early in the game, the younger brother injures his leg after an accident, and must be supported by his older sibling. At times, the player needs to temporarily stop carrying him in order to solve puzzles. However he can only be placed near safe, bright areas—because like most kids, he’s scared of the dark. This gameplay mechanic defines Monochroma as a cerebral, methodical puzzle game that rewards players who are caring and brave at the same time. Being a responsible older sibling is mandatory—just as in real life.

Review: Wolfenstein: The New Order

Fancy a more refreshing take on the first person shooter genre, perhaps one that sacrifices negligible aspects of history such as the outcome of World War 2? Wolfenstein: The New Order revisits its over the top roots to rekindle the Red Alert of modern shooters, but is there a place amongst the modern military genre for one of a new breed? Bethesda and MachineGames certainly think so, do you?

RoW_Wreckage

If slaughtering countless waves of Nazis is your thing, and if we’re honest, that probably applies to a fair few gamers, then you’re in for quite the treat. It’s not long before you are placed behind the helm of a plane in imminent and inevitable danger; one tragic crash later we get a glimmer of the potential horror of which the Nazis have laid out for us. Hankering after the head of the stalwart series antagonist ‘Deathshead’, our early mission takes us on the assault of a castle, where due to an unfortunate series of events, we find ourselves comatose for the next decade and a half.

Not a great start for our resolute, and series veteran, hero B. J. Blazkowicz, whom I’ll refer to as B.J. providing there’s no sniggering at the back. Upon regaining consciousness and instead of a slap on the back, a medal on the chest and a family by his side, B.J. awakens to learn that not only has he lost the war, but that worryingly, it still rages on. The Nazis have developed superior technology and repressed the world with their tyrannical reign, meaning it’s time to band together with the local resistance, and slay the veritable armadas of the Nazi regime with glorious, bloodthirsty weapons.

In the past, B.J. hasn’t really been all that emotive, but times have changed and it’s not the early 90’s anymore; with it, the past experience from the developers in terms of storytelling has shone through. Whilst he’s still the rugged, square-jawed badass we all know and love, B.J. certainly has moments where emotion will overcome him and add a previously unseen depth to his character. Dramatic inner monologues often plague our protagonist; snippets from stories of the past are occasionally regaled during presumably reminiscent scenes. The supporting cast also share their demons too and after meeting up with the resistance fighters; you’ll quickly get a feel for their plight under such horrific times. A certain pair sticks out for obvious reasons, one lost his ‘clubfoot’ child to the non-Aryan purging of the Nazis, whereas the other, Max, is a simple gentle giant, a child trapped in a man’s body. Needless to say, the protective bonding between the two can often create a dark, grounding experience to witness.

RoW_Massacre

It’s not all doom and gloom however, Wolfenstein can often be seen with its tongue in cheek. An early section sees you under peril from an enormous robotic dog before being saved via a friend throwing a grenade above its head and yelling catch. The virtually anthropomorphic gesture almost always elicits a smile; it’s not just dog jokes either (even though you can still chow down on some dog food, should you wish!) In the options, as per usual, there’s a subtitles setting for ‘foreign only’; for some hilarious reason, the game decides the Scottish accent to be as indecipherable as German. Easter eggs are fairly prominent too with the tricky to miss Wolfenstein 3D level to play through, along with unlockable records of famous 60’s music, but under a Nazi regime. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of hearing the Bavarian styled tunings of House of the Rising Sun!

Considering the unusually high levelled narrative content, it’s welcome to discover that the important things haven’t lagged behind either, namely the shooting of many a Nazi. The gunplay is incredibly satisfying with both mechanics from new and old takes on the genre. Whilst you can lean round corners, you can’t go prone (despite the enemies being able to) and whereas each gun feels different in terms of damage and recoil, you can dual-wield two of the same weapon at will. Fancy sliding around a corner whilst dismembering a Nazi due to two generous helpings of automatic buckshot? You’re sorted. How about equipping two marksman rifles and seeing how many heads you can pop without a scope? Again, be my guest! If the variation in weapons isn’t quite up to scratch for you, you’ll be pleased to know that most of them have a secondary mode, such as the assault rifles, under barrelled rocket launcher, or sacrificing the three round burst of the pistol for a single shot suppressor. Much like ammo, health and armour is scavenged by looting corpses, getting yourself off the beaten path and exploring. Health regeneration will only go so far too, so you’ll often have to keep an eye out for refills along the way.

Despite how entertaining ripping a mounted turret from its moorings and spraying down everything in sight can be, there’s always room for the quieter approach; in some cases, it can be satisfyingly preferable. Whilst the AI can be a little wonky, such as not being able to detect their stabbed comrade lying but 10 feet away from their patrol, it works in the games favour in terms of fun. Silent kills are truly silent too, meaning you can really clean up in some areas without even disturbing a mech-hound. If the contextual stealth kills aren’t quite your thing, you can also rely on the supressed pistol or the especially gratifying throwing knives, of which are only available upon completion of a perk requirement.

RoW_StabbyStabby

Another progressive move is the inclusion of persistent perks, whilst not game changers (save for the throwing knives) they can definitely make things a little easier for you. The requirements are by and large, not too punishing and most will come as the result of normal play, providing you’re mixing things up a little. But the rewards can range from larger magazine capacities to moving quicker whilst crouched. It’s an effective, easy and addictive way of making you try the different playstyles whilst also getting rewarded for it.

Mission designs generally favour large, open maps with various opportunities to play how you choose. Commanders are usually dotted around; whilst they are unarmoured and pose little direct threat, if you are spotted, they will incessantly call for reinforcements until they’re silenced. Making a beeline for the nearest commander and taking them out is often a good way to start a mission; with not only the threat of more enemies out of the way, they’ll eventually reveal the locations of all the secrets on the map once you’ve disposed of them too.

As a whole, Wolfenstein looks and sounds fantastic, the bleak yet dystopian neo Nazi setting complements the characters facial details, expressions and characteristics to create an over the top, but mesmerizing experience. Enemy designs are full of detail and appear suitably daunting due to their attire and armour. Later, more heavily armed enemies, clad in biomechanical suits will continue to impress with their sheer intimidation values, whilst your rag tag bunch of fighters try their best to oppose them. The soundtrack, with its thunderous modern rock styling’s will rousingly kick in when things kick off, yet also mellow down to a subtle, sombre tone when things become serious. Voice acting is believable, passionate and attention garnering, yet unfortunately for those without a 5.1 surround system, the voices can be a little on the quiet side.

It’s commendable, especially nowadays, to not include multiplayer and instead, focus on a strong narrative and it’s worked in their favour. With a strong first playthrough of around 12 hours, replay value for unlocking secrets and perks; not to mention a major decision to be made at the start, almost demanding another run through on its own. Some small niggles keep it from perfection however, the weapon wheel and its associated quick swap button requires an uncommon level of proficiency in cryptic crossword solving and the occasional switch to unnecessary cutscenes can jar a little too. All are overshadowed however, by the presentation, character relationships and most importantly, gratuitous fun.
