Review: Titanfall Expedition DLC

titanfallexpeditionartb_0

For anyone that’s played Titanfall on PC, Xbox 360 and/or Xbox One already knows that the 15 maps that already comes with the game has quite the variety as it is. We all have our favourites, whether you’re into your open and wide playgrounds for Titan and sniper heavy duals, to my personal favourite tighter built up arenas to show off your parkour abilities. The Expedition DLC adds another 3 maps into the mix that offer even more ways to take down your opponents in a variety of ways.

Runoff

dlc1screenrunoff01

Runoff is set at a water collection and treatment facility that offers a tighter arena for Titans to engage in combat. More importantly it’s the first map in the whole game that really offers vertical Titan fights. As players might be storming the water logged tunnels on ground level you could be ambushed from players on the urban built factories above. This map is medium sized compared to the others.

I particularly enjoyed playing Last Titan Standing on Runoff as the tight corners and vertical advantages with rat runs beneath made tactical approaches and escapes work well.
(A cross between the maps Angel City and Smuggler’s Cove)

Swampland

dlc1screenswampland01

Swampland is a map that features a remote water processing facility amongst ancient ruins. Probably more known as the map with trees you can wall run and hang from, Swampland is large and open with a lot of foliage for all your long distant fire fighting needs. This map is extra large and offers a lot of height and cover above.

This map was great for Attrition as you have many vantage spots on top of the trees which are great for sniping, the ancient ruins for your close range pilot battles and vast open forestation for Titan fights between the trees.

(A cross between the maps Boneyard and Lagoon)

War Games

dlc1screenwargames02

War Games is set as a pilot certification simulator training session. With the unique opening cut scene showing the start up sequence entering virtual reality War Games looks and feels like VR through and through. If you’ve played the game’s training mode you’ll notice the same art style of bright blue and orange neon textures with purposely-placed parkour walls for convenient wall running. This map is large and is perfect for pilots to show off their abilities to traverse across the arena.

Playing Hardpoint Domination on this map was by far the most enjoyable game mode. With a variety of ways to approach the Hardpoints all with various vantage spots to defend them within, this game mode played differently every time I played War Games.
(A cross between the maps Colony and Overlook)

Expedition Variety Pack and Expedition Attrition are 2 playlists you can choose to play if you fancy just playing the 3 maps on rotation. These, the DLC and the added recent update have given more to the Titanfall experience and we await to see what’s next as part of the Season Pass. For the stand alone price for the pack some players out there that are use to getting 4 maps and an added weapon and game mode like in Call of Duty would probably find this DLC lacking on the content front. But remember what Respawn are giving you is tried and tested perfected maps that offer a unique experience with every playthrough and added variety.

Preview: GRID: Autosport

1

I was really quite disappointed with GRID 2. Not particularly because it was a bad racer but because it felt like a step backwards from the first GRID. At least it did to me. GRID: Autosport is making itself out to offer pretty much everything in one nice tidy racer package, and avoiding being thought of as a sequel to GRID 2.

sanfran_01_1397750839

Autosport offers five disciplines, Touring, Endurance, Open wheel (basically F1), Tuner and Street. I reckon that should just about cover everything. Assuming there’s a decent roster of cars to back it up there are clearly enough disciplines to make sure Autosport keeps us coming back for more many hours down the road.

Swapping between disciplines it becomes very obvious that they’re not just for show too. With the difference in cars, tracks and race types there is a definitive line drawn between each discipline that keeps them separated from each other. Although in the preview code I played there wasn’t an enormous roster of vehicles and upgrades the groundwork is there ready for the full release.

The handling models have that familiar GRID sliding feel that makes tight races all the more exciting but it’s clear that Codemasters are perfecting their formula with the franchise. The handling never feels overly simplistic but ensures GRID doesn’t fall into the trap that some simulators can and forget to actually let you have any fun. If GRID has always done one thing right it’s excitement.

sepang_01_1397750840

The visuals are everything we’ve come to expect from GRID and the tracks always seem to have even more detail than the car models. Which, truth be told, is the right way to do it. How many of us play racers from the bumper cam where you can’t see the car anyway? In fairness GRID’s handling model does at least give you a fighting chance of playing from a third person view but it’s still not the same. With GRID constantly staring at the track for hour after hour isn’t a problem and Autosport is looking good so far, especially the textures on the asphalt and tarmac.

Most importantly I was elated to see the return of many of my favourite features from the first GRID that had disappeared on GRID 2. There’s an XP bonus that increases as you increase the challenge by changing some, or all, of the many difficulty options (like Forza). Better still is the return of your team mate and team objectives. You aren’t required to arbitrarily make it to first place from last place race after race. There are realistic goals that you and your AI driver can achieve together. I’m so glad Codemasters put this back on, I loved this feature in the first GRID.

hock_04_1397750838

So even though I only got my hands on a relatively small amount of the content it looks like Autosport will offer there’s a definite feeling that everything’s in place. The mechanics are solid, there’s a decent damage model and everything’s looking rather polished to be honest. With a ton of cars, upgrades and races Autosport just might be what GRID 2 should have been.

The game launches this fall and it’s a brand new series in the Battlefield franchise, set against the backdrop of a genre we all love – the war on crime and the battle between cops and criminals.Several years ago, I was at an internal EA meeting in Barcelona with creative leaders from across the company. It was there I met Karl Magnus Troedsson, the GM of DICE, for the first time, and we immediately began talking about games – I’ve always loved Battlefield and KM was a huge fan of Dead Space, which I was working on at the time.

LG G3 Coming Early July

LG has today announced the much rumoured and leaked smartphone the LG G3, and with launch events taking place in six cities worldwide London, New York, San Francisco, Seoul, Singapore and Istanbul LG G3 aims to redefine the definition of a global smartphone.

LG G3

LG developed the idea under the Simple is the New Smart concept, LG G3 is a culmination of consumer research based on LG’s The LG G3 was empowered with the best of what current technology has to offer, providing consumers with a user experience more ambitious than anything offered before by LG.

The smartest innovation in a fast evolving smartphone market is creating harmony between advanced technology and a simplified user experience,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG G3 is the result of our effort to actualize that idea into a tangible product. And we are extremely pleased with the result.”

Highlights of the new G3 include

5.5-inch Quad HD display with 538ppi with four times the resolution of HD and almost two times higher resolution than a Full HD display
13MP OIS+ (Optical Image Stabilizer Plus) camera with a revolutionary Laser Auto Focus that can shoot stunningly sharp images in a fraction of the time required by conventional phone cameras.
Polished metallic skin on the rear cover that is lightweight, fingerprint-proof and most of all,
Floating Arc form factor that feels incredibly comfortable in one hand and incorporates the innovative design heritage of the Rear Key
Simple is the New Smart concept of the G3.

True-to-Life Viewing Experience

LG’s reputation in the display arena is second to none and the development of the G3’s breath taking Quad HD display was the result of years of innovation in display technology. With a pixel density of 538ppi, the G3’s Quad HD display sets new viewing standard producing images that are sharper and clearer than traditional smartphone displays. At 5.5-inches, LG G3 boasts a screen ratio of 76.4 percent with thin bezels all around so the phone feels as comfortable in the hand as a smaller traditional smartphone.
The high resolution display on the G3 also required LG engineers to pair it with battery technology that was just as innovative. LG equipped the G3 with a 3,000mAh removable battery and advanced optimization technologies to further maximize battery efficiency. By replacing the metal in the battery cathode with graphite, LG engineers were able to extend the lifespan of the G3’s battery. The result is a battery that can keep up with the Quad HD display’s ultra-high performance without losing steam in the middle of the day.

The G3’s advanced 13MP OIS+ camera is designed to quickly and easily capture life’s special moments as they occur, not necessarily when you want them to occur. This is made possible with G3’s innovative Laser Auto Focus, the first of its kind in the smartphone industry. This technology enables the G3 to capture the best moment — even in low light — by measuring the distance between the subject and the camera using a laser beam. So no more fuzzy pictures of your son scoring his first football goal and or missed shots because your camera couldn’t decide quickly enough which toddler in the playground to focus on. Combined with the proven and popular OIS+ technology first seen in the G Pro 2, the G3 is sure to impress even the most discerning shutterbugs.

LG also simplified the process of actually capturing those special moments. Rather than having to focus on the subject in preview mode and then pressing the shutter button, with the G3, tapping the subject to focus will simultaneously also trigger the shutter. What’s more, the G3’s 2.1MP front camera incorporates several new enhancements such as a larger image sensor and larger aperture for more light throughput and better-looking selfies. A unique twist has been added to the standard timed selfie mode by incorporating gesture controls — when ready to shoot, simply clench your hand into a fist and the G3 will recognize the gesture and begin the automatic three-second countdown. It couldn’t get any simpler than that.

For video, the G3 offers superior sound quality with instinctive microphones that measure the environment to identify the optimal audio level for the clearest recording. And with the built-in 1W speaker with Boost AMP, users can enjoy videos and music accompanied by richer sounds and clearer tones.
The Floating Arc design of the G3 with its ergonomic arch and slim side profile provides an extremely comfortable grip for everyday one-handed use. The Rear Key continues to anchor LG’s innovative design language, with a newly designed power key and volume buttons as well as more premium quality materials and finish. LG also refined sophisticated technical features and advancements located on the rear by arranging them in a clean and singular layout consistent with the G3’s well-balanced design language.

LG-G3 Mulit colours

The stylish metallic skin with matte finish which keeps the G3 looking clean and fingerprint-free will be offered in five vibrant colours: Metallic Black, Silk White, Shine Gold, Moon Violet and Burgundy Red.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3FJQZlcifw

LG new external design, LG adopted a minimalistic user interface design with flat graphics. The circular motif of the graphic assets in the new UI was derived from the shape and concept of LG’s logo, reflecting its unique visual style and identity.

Simplified UX to Reflect Simple Pleasures

With advanced core technologies, LG took its Learning from You approach to a new higher level with new UX features to offer G3 users a unique experience unlike any previous LG smartphone. Highlights include:

Adaptive technology learns as you type for faster input with less mistakes. Smart Keyboard reduces input errors by up to 75 percent by tracking and analysing typing habits and intuitively “knowing” what word the user intended to type. The height of the keyboard can also be adjusted to better fit the user’s hands and position of the thumbs. Individual keys can also be customized with frequently used symbols for even faster input.

Like a personal assistant, Smart Notice provides suggestions and recommendations based on user behaviour, phone usage patterns and location to offer user information when it’s needed the most. Smart Notice can remind you of a call you declined earlier and ask if you would like to call that person back. If you have a large number of un used files or apps on the G3 taking up valuable space, Smart Notice will ask if you would like to delete or uninstall them. But what sets Smart Notice apart from other personal assistants is its natural language capabilities. For example, instead of just displaying today’s temperature and weather forecast, Smart Notice will make a recommendation such as, “You may want to take an umbrella today since it will rain this evening”.

Understanding the importance of maintaining and securing confidential data when smartphones are shared, misplaced, lost or stolen, the LG G3 offers a number of enhanced security features such as:

  • Knock Code enables users to unlock their device with a pattern of taps. Merging security and convenience, users can create a personalized code that can be entered anywhere on the screen. With the G3, users have the option of being able to use KnockON to wake the screen to check the time as well as enter the home screen directly via Knock Code Content Lock keeps personal files safe and hidden from view when sharing the G3 with friends. s internal memory or on the microSD card.
  • Kill Switch gives G3 owners the ability to disable their phones remotely in the event of theft. The Kill Switch also allows content on the G3 to be wiped so personal information won’t be compromised. Kill Switch also includes antivirus scanning and remote wipe and lock, among other essential features.

The LG G3 is a smartphone I’m really looking forward to hold and use this year, no fixed date or pricing for launch of the product out early July this year.
