Madden NFL 15 delivers on defense, providing a variety of new pass rush moves to help players disrupt the backfield, as well as new tackling mechanics that make it easier than ever to wrap up your opponent or make the big hit in the hopes of making him cough up the football. Furthermore, the revamped play calling system presents suggested plays in a whole new way, providing context for each recommended play as well as a snapshot of its historical success. You can also utilize the wisdom of the Madden Community, with constantly updated community-suggested plays that are pulled from actual Madden NFL 15 matchups from around the world.

The improvements extend beyond gameplay, with new gameday presentation that tells the story of your matchup, including new pregame and halftime shows with highlights, commentary and analysis. Fans can also utilize the enhanced Skills Trainer mode to not only improve their mastery of Madden NFL 15, but also learn basic football concepts. Once you feel confident head over into the brand-new Gauntlet to put your skills to the ultimate test.

Madden NFL 15 has taken a huge leap forward in so many areas, including the visuals, new presentation and defensive gameplay”, said Cam Weber, VP and Group GM at EA SPORTS. “But what I’m most pleased with is how the whole package hangs together as a cohesive, high quality experience. I think people are going to love it.”

First Look: Civilization: Beyond Earth

0

It’s difficult to imagine what could be added to Civilization V for the next instalment. Especially after the massive amount of content added with ‘Gods and Kings’ and ‘Brave New World’. In fact there’s so much stuff in Civ V that I still play even now. So the obvious choice I guess is to change the period and beyond Earth does just that. Rather than starting without even basic tools Beyond Earth will see players start in a modern era and expand far into the future.

The gameplay I saw was around turn 250 which is just about long enough to establish a solid empire and have plenty of technology researched. Visually a lot has changed. Farms are now vibrant, angular shapes randomly scattered across the map. Walkers and vertical tanks have replaced conventional units. It all looks refreshingly new but it’s still very clear this is Civ.

The infamous hexagonal tiles are still at the foundations of the map although now they’re much more angular than before. Combat is handled much the same, aside from the very different units. Almost everything is comfortingly ‘Civ-ey’. However, one of the biggest changes to Beyond Earth is research. Instead of Civ V’s research tree which basically saw every nation needing all researches by the endgame we’re going to have to choose. It is apparently “almost impossible to acquire all research in a single game”. Unfortunately I didn’t get intimate with the tech tree but I was able to see the size and scale of it. And it was massive. It’s going to add a great new layer of tactics to Civ and make research far more meaningful rather than just a case of getting as many research points as possible to ‘win the race’.

The maps are mimicking the tech tree too and have got even bigger. I never particularly felt the need for bigger maps in Civ but hey it’s certainly not going to hurt. Especially given the different victory conditions. For instance if you play as humans one of your victory conditions will/can be to help the survivors of earth find a new home. Or to make contact with an alien race. The new victory conditions should really change things up and of course domination is still an option for the warmongers among us.

Improved AI will supposedly make diplomacy more important. I wasn’t given too much detail but there’s a favour system that allows you to do a kind deed for another player and then cash in the favour at a later date. Hopefully there will be an actual sense of friends and enemies rather than people throwing around denouncements just because they feel like it.

Beyond Earth looks like it won’t disappoint Civ fans. A few new features, some improvements and bigger maps and tech trees should really breath new life into Civ. Civilization: Beyond Earth is due for worldwide release on October 24th.

Creative launch Sound Blaster Roar

Creative Technology have announced that its top-selling Sound BlasterRoar portable Bluetooth wireless speaker is now available.

Product_SB Roar_Angle

The Sound Blaster Roar is a new concept, 5-driver high performance portable Bluetooth wireless speaker is a #1 Bestseller on Amazon.com.  From 5 – 10 September, it will be showcased at IFA 2014 in Berlin, Germany at the Creative booth (No.105 at Hall 3.2).

Dubbed the ‘Audiophile Sound Booklet’, the sleek metallic Sound Blaster Roar is designed to rival existing home stereo systems in sound quality, yet light enough to be portable.  Measuring only 57 x 202 x 115 mm and weighs 1.1 kg, the Sound Blaster Roar packs an amazingly powerful punch in audio performance and features.  Engineered from the ground up with Creative’s expertise in audio technology and years of research and expertise in speaker design, the Sound Blaster Roar represents the pinnacle of portable wireless audio.  Its superb audio performance is set to redefine the home stereo and wireless speaker market – by combining wireless connectivity, portability, high fidelity and audio power all into one compact unit that can rest on the palm, and be brought along on-the-go for a truly mobile digital lifestyle.

Pre-launch, in March 2014, the Sound Blaster Roar garnered the prestigious Red Dot Award conferred by the famous German-based international “Red Dot Award: Product Design 2014” competition – often seen as the ultimate accolade in the world of product design that recognizes outstanding product designs for their innovation, functionality, quality standards, ergonomics and ecological compatibility.

Sound Blaster Roar – Advanced Acoustic Design and Features

The key advanced acoustic design elements of the Sound Blaster Roar are its dual amplifiers, Space-Filling Dispersion Architecture, Boxer-Bass-Module Design, Roar Audio Power, TeraBass and MegaStereo features.

Bi-Amplified Design

Most other portable speakers utilize a single amplifier to reproduce the entire audio spectrum, with most demand going into producing lows and mid-range audio.  A single-amplified design thus compromises the highs, which results in unbalanced, low-fidelity audio, a symptom that is common among portable speakers.  In contrast, the Sound Blaster Roar features a bi-amplified design that utilizes two amplifiers – one dedicated to driving the lows and mids, and another dedicated to delivering the highs. This allows the speaker to produce uncompromisingly clear, high definition and well-balanced music.

Space-Filling Dispersion

Another key differentiating factor is that the Sound Blaster Roar is specially designed to produce space-filling audio, instead of small, constrained audio.  This is achieved by the incorporation of far-field high frequency front-firing drivers that project audio further than

most other speakers in its class, allowing users to hear subtle audio details clearly even when at the other end of a room.  Audio spaciousness is further enhanced through the unique placement of the five different drivers.  While the two high frequency drivers are front-firing, the active bass and mid-range driver is top-firing, with lower-range audio enhanced even further by the two side-firing passive radiators.  This design results in a holosonic soundscape that enables improved width, height and depth while preserving stereo focus.  The listener thereby experiences spacious audio that is not sweet spot-dependant.

Boxer-Bass-Module Design

Placing the top-firing bass and mid-range driver horizontally also allows for a low centre of gravity, which increases the stability of the Sound Blaster Roar.  This eliminates any unnecessary movement, vibration or rattling of the speaker’s body during audio playback, even at high volumes.

ROAR Audio Power

By default, the Sound Blaster Roar is designed to deliver clear and balanced high fidelity audio, even at high volumes.  In scenarios such as parties or gatherings where a large group is gathered, pressing the ROAR button will instantly and significantly boost the loudness, depth and spaciousness of the speaker audio for an even more powerful, kick-ass, no-holds-barred listening experience.

TeraBass

TeraBass is a feature that intelligently compensates for the perceived lack of loudness in bass during low level audio playback without artificially over-accentuating bass levels.  TeraBass processing will intelligently increase the loudness of bass at low to medium volume levels.

MegaStereo

The MegaStereo feature enables two sets of Sound Blaster Roar speakers to be easily connected to each other to form a wider and more powerful left/left and right/right mega stereo system with double the punch using an optional special MegaStereo cable.

High-Definition Audio Codecs – AAC and aptX

AAC and aptX are advanced HD audio codecs that deliver high quality audio for Bluetooth transmission.  These codecs, supported by iPhones and branded Android phones, are crucial for high quality wireless audio transmission.

Games with Gold for September is named …

0

Today Games with Gold for September has been announced for Xbox Live Gold member.
Super Time Force_620

Super Time Force
began with a simple concept: merge side-scrolling classic Contra with a “time-reversal” hook to create a unique action-shooting experience. Super Time Force throws a lot of enemies and projectiles at you at once, but don’t despair – if you mess up, you can press a button to rewind to a point where you can do it all over again, the right way. But that’s not all; your “ghost” (the replay of the playthrough where you just died) will continue to fight alongside you for the new try, turning even your screw-ups into helpful teamwork opportunities. You might say that’s mighty neighborly of… yourself.

Assassins Creed Unity release date moves to 11th November

“As we got close to the finish, we realized we were near the target but still needed a bit more time to hone some of the details to make sure Assassin’s Creed Unity is exceptional,” says Vincent Pontbriand, senior producer at Ubisoft. “We sincerely appreciate players’ commitment to the game and their patience. It’s just a couple more weeks. And it’s going to be worth it.”

First Look: Cities: Skyline

1

The guys and girls over at Colossal Order, who brought us Cities in Motion 1 & 2, let me take a look at their latest project, Cities: Skyline. It seems that every time I play a city builder I’m always disappointed in some way. Either there isn’t enough to do, the maps are too small or for some reason it’s always online. Cities: Skyline looks like it might just be the game I’m looking for.

I got to see the start of a city and so the usual tasks presented themselves. We need to designate zones for buildings to develop, similar to Sim City, and connect everyone up with things like electricity and water. Luckily there’s a lot that Skyline doesn’t do like Sim City.

When setting up the small town with electricity first you select the type of power you want, wind, hydro, coal etc, place the building and then connect it up with your town. But instead of painfully hooking up every single building and house you just connect an area and it’s assumed cables are under the ground. Thank god we don’t have to unnecessarily connect every square foot to a power plant; again.

Cities070414_0033_Layer-31

And the same theory is applied to water and sewage. Pipes that you lay have a decent sized area of effect around them meaning laying them under your towns requires some effort but again avoids hours of pain and suffering. You also have to plan where your buildings go and draw water upstream from your sewage plant or you’ll pollute your water source.

After a small amount of effort the town was up and running and functioning on a basic level. The UI is hands down the biggest reason Skyline looks so easy to play. Other than your city there are only a handful of tools and features on screen. Everything just looks so simple and easy to do. Although the complexity and micro management is still there if you look for it. I certainly saw some menus that brought out the micromanager in me but the UI remained clean and functional.

Next we took a look at how big a city could be in Skylines. One of my biggest problems with the latest Sim City was how short the games were. Before you know it your map is full and there’s nothing left to do. I can absolutely guarantee that won’t be happening here. The map is huge. You can expand and build to your hearts content. You can even specialize small towns to become focused on one type of industry and connect them to other areas in your city, all in one map.

Cities070414_0008_Layer-56

Cities: Skyline really could be the city builder I’ve been looking for and wanting to play for so long. The UI is wonderfully clean and looks nice and easy to use. If you should want it, there are loads of micro management options just under the surface. There’s a lot of promise for Skyline and I hope it can become the game I’m still looking for. We’re hoping to see Skylines sometime mid 2015.

First Look: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

0

A change is coming in regards to Call of Duty, a brave one. With Sledehammer Games taking their turn at the notorious franchise, it’s not surprising that they’ve made some alterations, but will they be for the greater good? This year at Gamescom I was fortunate enough to see a ‘behind closed doors’ tour of the perks, weapons and Scorestreaks available in the build they presented.

CoD AW_Ascend_Boost_1407753660

Much like Black Ops 2, Advanced Warfare follows a Pick 13 system, this time however there are caveats to the benefits, as your Scorestreaks also cost points to equip. On show were the incredible customisation options on offer, especially compared to previous titles. Not only can you change the physical appearance of your character to a ridiculous extent, but the create a class system has been revamped to include greater customisation of weapons and now, the Scorestreaks. If you fancy your UAV staying up for longer at the expense of it requiring extra score to earn, then away you go. How about when calling in a sentry gun, having the ability to wrench it from its moorings and gad about with a makeshift Death Machine?

New and returning game modes mark their territories too with fan favourites such as Capture the Flag making its comeback alongside a new gametype that resembles a violent, gun-filled basketball game where players must transport an object that, when carried, forces you to lower your weapon. We were told that this could in fact be used to your advantage by throwing the ball at an enemy; thereby forcing him to shoulder his weapon, given quick enough reactions that is!

Of course the largest, and most significant change, would be the character movement. Mobility has been drastically altered through the use of your exoskeleton, boost jumps, chainable dashes and selectable abilities are all at your disposal. These changes in movement not only make you rethink every gun battle, but also adds the advantages of verticality to your arsenal; the maps reflect this. People who’re reticent to adapt will certainly struggle against those who’ve mastered the new movement techniques. Fortunately for those who wish to play a more ‘traditional’ Call of Duty experience, there will be a playlist dedicated to this; removing the exosuit abilities.

CoD AW_Defender_Under the Bridge_1407753668

Other small additions include the Heavy Weapons section to compliment the standard Snipers and Assault Rifles, alongside plenty new gadgets to try out via your wrist mounted launcher. Alongside dynamic map events such as the huge tidal wave on the multiplayer reveal trailer, there are also map style killstreaks that can be earned.

Whilst there’s never really been any shortage of weaponry to choose from, Advanced Warfare takes it a step further by ensuring each weapon has multiple variants with different stats. They might not feel like a completely separate weapon, but perhaps a slight range boost at the expense of fire rate might just tip the weapon towards your favour, and are just another example of the customization levels on offer. Unlocking these, and other bonuses such as a free, high tier care package in a future match are acquired via earning loot box style drops. Fortunately for most, these are awarded over time played and are not just purely skill dependent, ironically letting everyone have a chance at uniqueness. It’s unknown so far what the chances of receiving a ‘rare’ weapon are but I’m sure they’ve attempted to balance it accordingly.

CoD AW_Riot_Jailbreak_1407753672

As well as the inclusion of a mode to test yourself against the AI before jumping online, a firing range has also been included in the create-a-class section. Letting you test out the recoil patterns, equipment and exo abilities in your own time; the best part being is that it’s a near instantaneous load, essentially letting you try out your gear on the fly. As far as the time to kill goes, it lies somewhere between Black Ops 2 and Ghosts, the idea behind making it still a short-ish kill time being that with all the boosting, it could become frustrating and near impossible otherwise.

With the gratifying removal of one of the ‘must have’ perks, Dead Silence, it’s still disappointing to see that Toughness is still available to choose. Whilst certainly not a must have perk back in the days of Black Ops 1, over the years, it’s evolved into one that most people equip if they have any hope of winning a one on one gunfight. Another thing that will likely split opinion is the ability to equip iron sights and a stock on the available sniper; without alteration or balancing, it’s certainly on the cusp of being overpowered.

Overall, it’s a brave and exciting move for Call of Duty, and minus the minor irritations, it could well set itself up to be one of the better Call of Duty titles. The fast paced action, the new levels of customization and the dedicated development for the next gen consoles provides me with nothing but excitement.
