Review: NBA 2K15

0

It’s time again for a new addition to the NBA 2K series. As with any incremental franchise, and particularly annual ones, it’s often difficult to see were things are going or if anything is actually being improved at all. NBA 2K14 was a solid game that had some decent mechanics and definitely earned entry into the ‘Best Sweat in Videogame’ competition.

2

In keeping with the franchise NBA 2K15 continues to offer a huge amount of variety and game modes to keep you happy. There are all the usual modes you would expect in any sports game and thankfully MyGM mode returns from 2K14. MyGM mode allows you to control a team, alter the roster and everything else that goes with managing a team. Truth be told I don’t know enough about NBA or the game to make enough use of the MyGM mode but it is clear there’s plenty to do and see. It’s not so difficult that non-NBA people like myself can’t understand it at all but this mode is really for the fans.

From the very beginning NBA 2K15 puts a much bigger focus on the custom character mode. There’s a vague attempt at wrapping a story around it but ultimately it’s the standard affair for a career mode. Every so often someone from the sport will turn up and throw in a few words but as you might imagine NBA isn’t exactly going to break ground with its story. But there’s still a few decent additions that flesh out the main career mode as much possible, given the sports genre.

It’s unlikely too many people are likely to be worried about the story in an NBA game but at least there’s an attempt to stop career mode from becoming a string of single games. Unfortunately you get the sense that the whole thing is a poorly acted daytime TV show with a few celebrity athletes thrown in for good measure. Better voice acting and a quality, albeit likely generic, story about a new athlete rising the ranks would really improve NBA and many other sport games so 2K15’s attempt has to be recognized and appreciated.

Much more important are the stats and upgrades that can be earned for your player. There’s a depth to your character that allows you to carefully craft a player that can properly reflect the skills and attributes you actually want. It will take time and effort to get your player up to scratch though because upgrades are quite difficult to attain. For those of you who relish the satisfaction that comes from the results of an RPG style grind this is good. For some it might not be although ultimately it comes down to personal taste. Far too many upgrade systems hand over abilities like they’re nothing but 2K15 makes you work for it.

Getting into the gameplay it quickly becomes obvious where almost all the care and attention is. Moving and interacting on the court feels a lot like 2K14 although with a few new additions. For example The UI element that indicates how long you’ve held the shoot button is a very welcome touch. It’s nice to see a game that isn’t ashamed of leaving something alone if it doesn’t need changing and 2K15 doesn’t play around too much with the solid mechanics inherited from 2K14. There are still the usual rough loading times and occasional mishaps but mechanically NBA 2K15 gets most things right. Unfortunately the menu becomes a constant frustration. But I suppose it wouldn’t be a sports game if the menu isn’t at least a slight pain to navigate. I don’t know why it’s become a ‘feature’ of the genre but sadly it’s one NBA 2K15 doesn’t ignore.

1

Despite some of the elements looking a little rough around the edges there are some moments when you play 2K15 and just have to stop and look for a minute. It looks so good at times it’s unbelievable. But there are still some things that don’t live up to NBA’s high visual standards. 2K15’s graphics are a reasonable upgrade from 2K14 – which is a good thing because 2K14 still looks pretty good. The players, in particular, look fluid and realistic when moving around the court.

But NBA 2K15 suffers from the same problem many annual updates suffer from, it’s not that different to last years entry. The mechanics are largely the same, although that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, and the attempt at inserting a meaningful story into the career mode is admirable – even though unfortunately isn’t a quality story and feels a little tacky. Also the menu badly needs an overhaul. One day there will be a decent menu in a sports game. You just have to believe.

Once you get into a game and start actually playing basketball 2K15 springs into life. But there are plenty of other areas that could have used some love and attention too. For pick up and play NBA 2K15 is an absolute winner. And I can’t help but like the story in theory despite the reality that it’s too cheap to add anything to the game. Even more than other franchises NBA is in competition with itself purely because it has no competition. With no other basketball titles to compete with, NBA is in danger of becoming complacent, even when compared with its own titles. The next entry will need to change something significant if NBA 2K plans on going somewhere in the future.

Get your blades ready for Assassin’s Creed Unity and Rogue

Today Ubisoft has announced the launch of two Assassin’s Creed games for all players: Assassin’s Creed Unity, the latest installment of the franchise set against the backdrop of the chaos and brutality of the French Revolution, for the Xbox One games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PlayStation 4  and Windows PC and Assassin’s Creed Rogue, available for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Both games will be available in the UK on 14th November.

A new hero makes his mark during a brutal time in Assassin’s Creed Unity

Set in a once-magnificent Paris, Assassin’s Creed Unity plunges players into the terror of the 1789 French Revolution and features the most dense and immersive Assassin’s Creed city ever created. In this time of chaos and brutality, a young man named Arno, wounded by the loss of those he loved, sets out on a deadly path of redemption. Arno’s pursuit throws him into the middle of a ruthless struggle for the fate of a nation, and transforms him into a true Master Assassin.

Assassin’s Creed Unity reinvents the franchise, starting with the core gameplay pillars that have defined the series from the beginning: navigation, stealth and combat. Players will carve their way through a stunning, full-scale open-world Paris, thanks to the power of the new Anvil engine, rebuilt from the ground up for new generation consoles. Players can channel their inner Assassin, customising weapons, equipment, outfits and specialised skills to match their play style.

In addition to the sprawling single-player campaign, players can join with up to three friends and take part in story-driven online co-op missions designed specifically for Assassins to play together. Skills and unique gear acquired in the single-player missions will be accessible in co-op and will define a player’s personalised Assassin’s style, whether emphasizing brute force, agility or stealth. Players will also select a unique co-op skill that will help the team survive, evade or fight more effectively to the benefit of the team.

Turn the tables on the Assassins with Assassin’s Creed Rogue

Assassin’s Creed Rogue, available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners, is set in the middle of the 18th century during the Seven Years War. Assassin’s Creed Rogue gives players new locations across North America to explore, including the frozen North Atlantic, the Appalachian River Valley and New York. As Shay Patrick Cormac, players experience the Assassin’s Creed universe through the eyes of a Templar as he suffers the Brotherhood’s betrayal and transforms into an Assassin hunter.

The acclaimed naval components from previous Assassin’s Creed games have been enhanced in Assassin’s Creed Rogue. The game also gives players new weapons to use on both land and sea in pursuit of taking down the Assassins, including a new ship called the Morrigan.

More adventures await with additional Assassin’s Creed content

Players can enhance their Assassin’s Creed Unity experience with a free companion app available on iOS and Android. Filled with activities and strategic information, players will solve hidden glyph puzzles on famous Paris landmarks and manage their Nomad Brotherhood to unlock exclusive missions and rewards.

Players can unlock more rewards by connecting to Assassin’s Creed Unity and Assassin’s Creed Rogue with their Uplay accounts, completing actions to unlock 30 exclusive in-game rewards.

Fans will be able to dive even deeper into the Assassin’s Creed experience by joining Initiates, tracking their in-game progress and unlocking additional content on Assassin’s Creed Unity.

LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham also features an incredible line-up of voice actors, many of whom are reprising their roles in the LEGO Batman videogame franchise, including:  Troy Baker (Batman); Travis Willingham (Superman); Christopher Cory Smith (The Joker); Laura Bailey (Wonder Woman and Catwoman); Dee Bradley Baker (Brainiac); Josh Keaton (Green Lantern); Scott Porter (Aquaman), and none other than 1960s Batman himself, Adam West! Konami Digital Entertainment B.V. has revealed the full list of club and national licenses that will feature in its forthcoming PES 2015 title – including second-tier teams for the first time and all Brazilian top-flight teams. The publisher has also revealed content of an exhaustive day one update file that adds key new elements to the game.

3684C72D-AB21-41C5-BB35-D0A27A0E21B1

The cornerstone of PES 2015’s licensed content remains the world’s greatest club competitions – which are exclusive to the series. The game features dedicated modes featuring iconography and branding for Europe’s UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League competitions, whilst the South American Copa Libertadores returns alongside the new Copa Sudamericana tournament. Asia Champions League features once again, rounding off a stellar list of club competitions only available in PES. Each of these licenses represents club football at its highest level, perfectly synchronizing with PES 2015’s ‘The Pitch Is Ours’ mantra, where development has focused on ensuring the game mimics the ebb and flow of real matches.

PES 2015 also introduces second-tier teams for the first time, with Spanish Liga Adelante represented in its entirety, as is the French Ligue 2. The team rosters have also been extended to English and Italian second-tier teams, albeit not in licensed form but with real players. These supplement the full Dutch Eredivisie, French Ligue 1, Spanish La Liga and Italian top-flight leagues, which are long-standing PES inclusions. The cream of European club sides are also licensed, and include pack star Mario Götze’s Bayern Munich; Portuguese giants FC Porto, Benfica and Sporting SP; and the likes of Anderlecht, Manchester United, Zenit St Petersberg, CSKA Moscow and Galatasaray.

The South American leagues is also well represented, with KONAMI securing the full Argentine Primera Division and 21 Brazilian club teams with official kits.

KONAMI has also prepared a day one download for PES 2015, which will ensure that 93 new kits will appear authentically in the game, while eight more licensed teams have been added including Sparta Praha, FK Partisan, and Maccabi Tel Aviv. Additionally, the Brazil league will have six of its teams (Santos, Internacional, Vasco da Gama, Vitoria, Criciuma, and Chapecoense) updated to include an additional 109 of the athlete’s real names. An additional digital download will be available in December that will add 11 of the athlete’s real names to the roster for Flamengo; the December update will also include yet more teams in other leagues and bolster the stadia roster for the current generation of gaming systems. The day one download will also reflect all transfers and loans, and new boots from Puma and Nike will be added. Continuing KONAMI’s dedication to ensure the stars resemble and act like their real life counterparts, the day one update will include over 80 player feature updates as well.

PES 2015 will be available on 13th November for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, and for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC (digital download version).

JERSEY BOYS is the inspiring drama featuring The Four Seasons’ songs that influenced a generation, based on the Tony Award-winning musical of the same name. Directed by Oscar® winner Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby, Unforgiven) JERSEY BOYS is yours to own as it arrives onto Blu-ray™ and DVD on November 10.

John Lloyd Young (Law and Order) reprises his Tony Award-winning portrayal of the legendary lead singer of The Four Seasons, Frankie Valli; Erich Bergen (How Sweet It Is) stars as Bob Gaudio, who wrote, or co-wrote all of the group’s biggest hits; Michael Lomenda (Made in Hollywood) and Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire) star respectively as Nick Massi and Tommy DeVito, two original members of The Four Seasons; and Oscar® winner Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter) stars as mobster Gyp DeCarlo.

JERSEY BOYS is a biography of The Four Seasons, the rise, the tough times, the personal clashes, and the ultimate triumph of a group of friends whose music became symbolic for a generation.

Jersey Boys gets to the heart of the relationships at the centre of the group-with a special focus on frontman Frankie Valli, the small kid with the big falsetto. In addition to following the quartet’s coming of age as performers, the core of the film is how an allegiance to a code of honour learned in the streets of their native New Jersey got them through a multitude of challenges: gambling debts, Mafia threats and family disasters. Jersey Boys is a glimpse at the people behind a sound that has managed to endure for over four decades in the hearts of the public.

Two Minute Review : Griffin iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Wallet Case

Now that Apple have released the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus you might want to consider buying a case for them – here is our two minute review of the Griffin iPhone 6 (and 6 Plus) Wallet Case.

CDW Review Griffin iPhone 6 Wallet Case - 7

Streamlined is the word for this sleek wallet. It keeps your iPhone safe and at the ready, plus ID or credit cards and cash in slots inside the cover. The cover is hinged like a book to fold back out of your way during use. The case has cutaways for ports and controls, and grips the sides of your iPhone to give you edge-to-edge access to your touchscreen.

Features

  • Wallet for cards, cash, and iPhone 6 Plus
  • Protective cover opens like a book
  • Built-in polycarbonate frame grips your iPhone edge to edge without hindering your access to the touchscreen
  • Slots inside the cover for 2 ID or bank cards or cash

What’s in the Box?

The box contains the wallet case only.

Using the Wallet

Slotting the iPhone 6 into the wallet was a little bit of a tight squeeze, but that’s exactly what you want! Removing it is the same tight squeeze so take your time so as you don’t damage either the case or the iPhone.

Even the iPhone 6 Plus version fits in your hand (just)!

It is very easy to open the cover all the way and pop it behind the back of the case when you are using the iPhone for phone calls – otherwise it can be a little uncomfortable trying to use it.

Final Thoughts

As the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have only recently been released there are not that many options to choose from for protecting them with a case other than just a standard case, and so when we were told about the Griffin Wallet Cases we thought they might make a nice change, and we were not wrong!

The case itself opens up just like a book revealing both the iPhone 6 held extremely securely in place and also some slots for either cards, business cards or cash (or anything else you might want to put there). Just be careful about putting anything there that might scratch the screen of your iPhone.

The case does add a little to the thickness of the iPhone 6, but then you are putting it in the case to protect it.

My only little gripe is that the front cover doesn’t stay closed when the iPhone is just sitting on a surface. I found myself continually turning it over so that the front cover was facing whatever surface I had the iPhone on, but it’s not too much of an issue.

Overall I was very happy with the Wallet Case and my iPhone 6 Plus is sitting nice and secure by my side as I write this review, and I can highly recommend it to anyone who wants to protect their iPhone 6.

The Griffin iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Wallet Case retails for around £24.99.
