Review: Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix

Walt Disney and Final Fantasy are, to some, a fairly intriguing culmination, yet to others, it’s a series of games that has amassed a large cult following. After my personal disappointment with the previous PS3 entry, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix, (mainly due to its archaic combat system and unresponsive camera) I entered the world of the sequels hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

For those who’ve played the HD 1.5 Remix, things will feel instantly familiar. Much like the previous PS3 outing, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix includes two re-mastered entries in the series: Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, previously on PS2, and Birth by Sleep Final Mix from the PSP. To round it all off, there’s also a cinematic version of the Nintendo DS’ Kingdom Hearts Re: Coded too.

In battle, effects and characters can look quite good

Kingdom Hearts II is the obvious draw here for both those who’ve already played the original and those new to the spiralling plot saga of the series. Following in the same vein as the original Kingdom Hearts, the sequel (and the accompanied spinoffs) all combine to produce the bewilderingly convoluted plot arch. Fixating, for the most part on Sora, you’ll experience the usual trek across a multitude of Disney films, along with a healthy dose of classic Square Enix characters on the way.

Much like other games of the era, progression can be slow at the start, particularly so for an action RPG; combat suffering the most. With moves unlocked via advancement, the starting couple of hours can feel a little cumbersome. Without a dedicated block or dodge ability, the first dozen or so battles can resemble a scene out of Benny Hill, with monsters chasing you in circles whilst you futilely attempt to avoid their attacks. As the game opens up however, more and more abilities become unlocked making it a much more viable and enjoyable experience. Much like the combat woes at the beginning, the story starts a little slowly too, mainly due to the jarring sections where you control Roxas for the first few hours. As if the plot were not ripped to shreds enough via being explained not only over three games, but sent further afar by also being on three different platforms. Keeping up interest in the relationship between Roxas and Sora still feels a little too much like a chore even after the somewhat disappointing conclusion.

At least in this way; the other portions of the overall package seem to make a little more sense, mainly in terms of both backstory and character progression. Whilst Kingdom Hearts II’s main story does do a decent enough job of fleshing out the main characters, there are still questions left unanswered; thankfully the other two games do a solid job of filling in the gaps.

Is black and white in HD oxymoronic?

Birth by Sleep (Final Mix) is another HD remake in a similar fashion from that of the HD 1.5 Remix. Having been originally developed for the PSP, there will inevitably be the immediate graphical downgrade that unfortunately is immediately noticeable. Despite this however, it’s clear to see that this entry has garnered a lot of love from the developers. The entire game has been fully re-mastered in HD and has received a bit of spit and polish in other areas too. A noticeable inclusion being the addition of a right thumbstick to control the camera with, something that will please many of those who came from the PSP version. Aside from the extra available buttons making the game entirely more playable, other changes are also present from the Japanese version. Extra bosses, new Keyblades and bonus scenes are all present in the ‘Final Mix’ version meaning more content all round.

Re: Coded is another additional extra following in the same vein as 358/2 Days from the previous collection. Much like its doppelganger, the tale unfolds in one long series of cutscenes with zero player interaction whatsoever. Whilst it may well have had a good old visual tweaking alongside its extra scenes, it’s certainly still the weakest portion of the group; despite its intentions of being a narratively focused expositional piece. The unfortunate truth is that the Kingdom Hearts saga is already so utterly convoluted with unnecessary filler and twists that the small revelations you do witness near the end of this three hour long ‘movie’, are simply not worth it and are likely only of interest to the most hardcore of fans.

1400c336e462a166af7cd38dfce760dc
Guess which one we’ll be playing as?

As far as the gameplay holds up, it’ll all feel familiar to those who’ve delved into the series before. The extra thumbstick support on Birth by Sleep will be reason enough for many to jump straight in, but ultimately, it’s the graphical upgrades that are the selling point here. Inevitably, the newer the title and the more advanced the hardware it was developed on is, the better the game tends to look. Yet despite there being no true wow moments, each game does follow a distinct art style that holds up rather well. The environments can be a little lacking in Birth by Sleep, along with Terra’s rather disinterested voice acting, but aside from that, the visual upgrades will appeal to fans and newcomers alike.

Kingdom Hearts II will, understandably, be the main reason for buying the collection, and rightly so too. It’s simply a better game than the others and due to its popularity; it will likely have been played by more people too. For the less devout, the opportunity to play the myriad of other games that were released on the multitude of various consoles for the first time can only be a bonus too. If you weren’t an enormous fan of the originals, there’s only so much a lick of paint can alter your disposition by, and you won’t find anything drastically new here to draw you in either. If on the other hand, you are one of the many people that enjoyed fond memories of them; this Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix is the definitive way to enjoy the coming together of these titanic licences.

Review: Samurai Warriors 4

0

The Warriors series has never really been something that catches my imagination. Even between Dynasty and Samurai flavours the ability to run around slaying a ridiculous amount of enemies has never been enough to excite me. Don’t get me wrong, taking on wave after wave of nameless foes has it’s appeal but I always feel like Samurai (and Dynasty) Warriors chucks everything else out the window to make room. There’s only so much button mashing I can take and that’s one thing you can guarantee a Samurai Warrior title will have enough of.

1

In fact on my very first outing I was presented with a good few hundred enemies that made no attempt at all to fight me or even a vague sense that they would evade my attacks. Sure they ran towards me but all I had to do was press the same button over and over as I watched the combo numbers climb. On occasion I moved the thumbstick to orient my character but literally no extra effort is required. The very second I realised the tides of slightly animated scarecrows posed no threat at all I was bored. But I pushed through to get onto bigger and greater things.

But it just never happens. There really isn’t anything just around the corner. Missions play out as a series of you pressing the same button until you win. On occasion you might find the need to press a different button to do a special attack but more often than not I just used them to break the tedium. Bosses play out as little more than slightly challenging versions of their straw counterparts, especially early game.

There are combos and abilities that make it worth while levelling and thinking about a character to an extent but without more complicated gameplay the only reason to do so is from self motivation. There is definitely a place for it but I constantly had the thought in the back of my head that it was all pointless. Truth be told there is a combo system and character variations for those who look for them but for me the combat is too simplistic to warrant any real investment.

2

On the face of it there seems to be plenty of missions in Samurai Warriors too. There is a campaign for each of the 50 or so characters which is impressive and does provide loads to do. At least in terms of time spent on the game. The problem is that they’re all largely the same. A ridiculous pop-up will appear for each character and explain what’s happening while characters talk mindlessly during your combat. There’s nothing even close to depth in the story and each campaign soon follows the path of the combat and becomes mindless.

It’s fine to have this amount of content, in fact it’s commendable, but it’s not enough to stretch gameplay out just for the sake of it. If there’s little there to start with dragging out the same repetitive gameplay really isn’t likely to add much to a game. The main problem I had was that despite the amount of content I was bored well before the gameplay had run out.

Chronicles mode allows you to make you’re own character with a modest set of customization tools. There is a more persistent upgrading system in chronicles and on your travels you will have the opportunity to equip yourself with better equipment. However I still wasn’t thrilled by the missions. It’s certainly more engaging knowing that you have your own character but ultimately the gameplay still failed to engage me. Soon I was back to playing the same mission repeatedly.

3

The visuals are nothing special although there’s nothing particularly awful either. Characters are well detailed and look respectable even though they don’t hold up too well on closer inspection. For me Samurai Warriors’ biggest sin are the environments. There’s a decent amount of colour splashed about but the quality of the textures is low, although HD, and often areas aren’t interesting enough to capture the imagination. Samurai Warriors 4 certainly doesn’t look bad but it’s a long way from looking good.

Samurai Warriors 4 has this absolute reliance on quantity over quality. Rather than a complicated combat system that allows for some skill or character investment there are thousands of enemies. Which would be cool if there was actually something to do other than pressing the same button over and over again. Chronicles mode adds some customization and makes missions a little more interesting until you realise you’re again just pointlessly wading through enemy after enemy.

As an incremental update there isn’t much on offer that improves over other Warriors games. Even the visual updates aren’t really significant enough to convince veterans to return and the multi-format release has done nothing to help. There isn’t enough to get new players or people who didn’t like previous titles involved. Ultimately I found Samurai Warriors looked poor and was just plain boring. For me that’s the worst thing a game can be.

Disney’s BAFTA and the Academy-Award nominated BIG HERO 6, became the third highest-grossing Disney Animation title of all-time domestically this weekend, behind only The Lion King and Frozen. The critcally acclaimed blockbuster has now passed Beauty and the Beast to take a super-sized $521m at the global box office.

Win Dolphin Tale 2 on DVD

To celebrate the release of Dolphin Tale 2 on Blu-ray and DVD, we are giving three lucky winners the chance to win it on DVD.

5000193456_UK_DT2_BD_SL_3D-2

Believe in the spirit of friendship, the strength of family and the power of hope when DOLPHIN TALE 2, inspired by a true story, is available to own first on digital HD from February 2nd 2015 and makes a splash onto Blu-ray and DVD on February 16th 2015 .

Winter, the world’s most extraordinary dolphin returns in the charming and heartwarming sequel to DOLPHIN TALE. This time, Clearwater Marine Aquarium must find Winter a new companion, or risk loosing Winter to another Aquarium forever.

Directed by Charles Martin Smith (Dolphin Tale, Air Bud), DOLPHIN TALE 2 sees return performances from the entire main cast of DOLPHIN TALE led by Oscar winner Morgan Freeman (The Lego Movie, Lucy) as the creator of Winter’s prosthetic tail, Dr. Cameron McCarthy; Harry Connick Jr (Dolphin Tale, Angels Sing) as head of the Clearwater Marine Hospital team, Dr. Clay Haskett; Nathan Gamble (Marley & Me, Beyond The Heavens) as Winter’s owner and trusted companion, Nelson Sawyer; Ashley Judd (Divergent, Olympus Has Fallen) as Sawyer’s mother, Lorraine Nelson; and Kris Kristofferson (San Patricios, 7 Minutes) as Reed Haskett, Dr. Clay’s father.

It has been several years since young Sawyer Nelson (Gamble) and the dedicated team at the Clearwater Marine Hospital, headed by Dr. Clay Haskett (Connick, Jr.), rescued Winter. With the help of Dr. Cameron McCarthy (Freeman), who developed a unique prosthetic tail for the injured dolphin, they were able to save her life.

Yet their fight is not over. Winter’s surrogate mother, the very elderly dolphin Panama, has passed away, leaving Winter without the only pool-mate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have even greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins’ social behaviour requires them to be paired with other dolphins. Time is running out to find a companion for her before the team at Clearwater loses their beloved Winter to another aquarium.

How to enter to win

We have three copies of Dolphin Tale 2 to give away on DVD.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Q&A

QUESTION: Are you starting to feel like an honorary citizen in Clearwater, Florida?

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: It is a great part of the world. Just being in Clearwater again and driving past the aquarium, I realized how much time I’ve spent here doing these films. And it’s just an incredible part of the world.

QUESTION: What kind of response did you get from fans after the first one and did that affect your decision to do the second one?

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: It didn’t matter about the fan response with regard to doing it again. I mean, even if it had been poorly received or people didn’t like it, there probably would have been a reason behind it. But if it were exactly the movie that it was and people didn’t like it, I would have come back and done it again anyway, just for lots of reasons. It was just a great filming experience, working with Charles [director Charles Martin Smith], who’s really a brilliant guy and a pleasure to be around, working with the rest of the cast, being at CMA [Clearwater Marine Aquarium], all of those things really contributed to this being, I’d probably say, the best filming experience I’ve ever had. It was just great.

And people really like it. What’s interesting to me is as you go through your career in the entertainment business, new people are being born and growing up and becoming teenagers and young adults and a lot of the people that came to know me through Dolphin Tale, they have no idea that I do anything else— but it’s not a bad thing. It’s cool.

QUESTION: Is that because you’ve been doing more in front of the camera and less in music?

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: Not really. I’m still making records and touring and stuff. If you happen to cross somebody’s path in a certain way, Dolphin Tale reached a lot of people, but maybe those people don’t go see me on tour, buy my records or watch TV or anything like that. So, I’m not doing any more acting than I was doing 20 years ago, but it kind of ebbs and flows with regard to how people are introduced to you, you know.

QUESTION: Harry, one of the things I love about this movie it shows our interdependency—animal life, human life. What it is you take from Dolphin Tale?

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: My trainer tells me all the time, when I’m complaining, ‘Oh, I don’t want to do another set or whatever.’ He always says, ‘No mind. Just do it. Just be quiet and do it. You’re going to get through it; you’re not going to die. Don’t think about it. Just do it.’

And there’s something about Winter… Obviously, she’s not a human being, so she doesn’t think about things the way we think about them, but it is what it is. This is what life gave her, and there’s something inspirational about watching a creature that has a mind that’s different in the way that we know it. This is the cards that were dealt to her, and what else you going to do?

Life is really like that, as we all know. There are certain things that are just wonderful about life and certain things that are not wonderful. And what are you going to do about it? You have to accept things with grace and with dignity and move through them. And that’s something that you’re reminded of when you see, especially Winter. I call it DWI – ‘Deal With It.’ [Laughs]

QUESTION: Is it easier to step in the shoes of a character you’ve already played? What is the preparation process for you on this film?

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: Well I did a pretty considerable amount of research the first time around, because I really wanted to know who this guy was. The second one was, obviously, much easier, because I had done it before. What was really strange is that it was almost the exact same set of circumstances as the first one. I mean, even the volunteers at CMA were pretty much the same, same set, same city, same cast. So, it was very easy to kind of remind myself of what that was.

But for the first one, I went and interviewed marine biologists and marine veterinarians, just anything I could to try. I watched how they looked. But the second time was a lot easier.

QUESTION: At the end of the film, you see a lot of the actual footage of the events that are pretty accurately portrayed in the film. How much were you trying to remain accurate? And where did you have room to embellish and make it your own?

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: Well, this is really Charles Martin Smith’s area. He is a brilliant, brilliant guy. And every single nuance of what happened in real life was thoroughly considered with regard to how it was going to be dramatized in the film. Nothing was not fully considered. So, that’s really about him as a character. You knew you were working within the realm of what’s on the page. Was I able to manipulate things and do things? Sure. He’s a great actor’s director, too.

But that’s really him. Many times, I would say I didn’t know what happened in real life and what didn’t happen, and he was extremely knowledgeable about every detail. Because as an actor you need to understand everything. So I’d say, ‘Did this happen?’ He’d say, ‘Oh, yeah,’ or ‘No, this happened.’

Sometimes you’d be on set and you wouldn’t know who was hired as an extra or a cast member and who was actually on the scene when it went down. We’d be standing out in the water with people with CMA costumes on or the kind of costumes with gear, and many times they were the people who actually did the rescue work. Sometimes they would be actors or whatever, but it was a weird kind of altered reality.

But that’s Charlie. He did a great job with that. It’s really hard to do, too. It’s easy to chalk it up as a family film, but it’s very complex to walk that line between what really happened and what didn’t.

QUESTION: Were you in attendance at the wrap party in 2011 when Hope was rescued?

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: Oh, yes, I was. That was crazy because we had been through this wonderful emotional journey with the entire filmmaking experience and with the animals and stuff. W were at the wrap party and there was this bustling and people were coming in with cell phones and pictures of Hope, who had been rescued. It was just another nod to that weird line between what really happened and making movies, because as we’re celebrating the wrap of the film, 24/7, these guys are still doing what they have to do.

They’re not messing around. I mean, this is a religion to these people. And it’s just constantly going on. That’s something that I hope continues to get out to people that see the movie. It was crazy, the fact that they did it, and then, a couple years later, when I saw the script, I said, ‘Man, I don’t know about doing this. What you going to do?’ I mean, how could you possibly tell the story in a different way? And then I read it and thought, ‘Oh, wow. It’s really cool.’ So that was an exciting night.

QUESTION: Did anybody toss around the idea of a sequel that night?

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: No. I remember when I first heard it, Broderick [Johnson], one of our Alcon producers, said, ‘They’re talking about doing a second one.’ And I actually laughed. I said, ‘Man, you’ve got to be kidding.’ I thought it was a joke, really. And then I read the script and I’m like, ‘Holy crap.’ Charlie is , really smart, man. I mean, this is, in some ways, better than the first one, I think.

QUESTION: Did you offer any advice to the kids in the movie, Nathan Gamble and Cozi Zuehlsdorff?

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: They’re incredible, and I love them very much. I love both of them and know them really well. And Cozi, who’s a very serious musician and very talented, we have a great relationship because she wants me to critique her. And I do. It’s not about being hard on her, but it’s just about being honest. She’ll say, ‘What do you think about this?’ And I’ll say, ‘Listen, I think this is great, and here’s what I think you need to work on.’ And she’s like a sponge. I mean, she’s so brilliant, so smart, and I’ve told her before, ‘I’m not being tough on you. I just don’t want to waste your time. I want to tell you what the real deal is.’ And she’s tough. She gets it. And she works on it.

QUESTION: She sounds good in that song at the end.

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: That’s the tip of the iceberg. She’s a musical freak. [Laughs] No, I’m serious. She is really a very touched young lady. You have no idea how talented she is. Crazy talented.

QUESTION: We understand why you came back. Why do you think everybody was so keen to get back on board for the sequel?

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: I think it was just the incredible filmmaking experience. It really was. You can take the subject matter of the movie, you can break it down into scenes that you’re really looking forward to doing. But when you look at it like as a package deal, you have to get on a plane, you have to come down, you have to block out a big chunk of your life. It’s a time commitment. It’s a great thing, but it’s a lifestyle. And a lot of boxes have to be checked off before you say, ‘That’s really what I want to do. I want to be away from my family, I want to stay up until four in the morning, whatever.’ It’s a commitment to make.

But it was such a great experience. It was just such a positive experience. That’s why everybody came back, because everybody loves each other. It’s a beautiful part of the world. You’re talking about a subject matter that everybody can relate to. So, it’s just a great experience.

QUESTION: Did you get in the tank with Winter?

HARRY CONNICK, JR.: Yeah. That was cool. And swimming with the dolphins versus really interacting with Winter and the other animals was a completely different thing. I have done that before like in situations where you can go and be in the same vicinity as them, but when you’re actually working one-on-one with Winter, it blows that other stuff away.
