Nordic Action-Adventure Fimbul Heralds a Frozen Armageddon February 28

0

Fimbul, the Norse comic action-adventure from EuroVideo’s publishing label Wild River and Danish developer Zaxis Games, initiates an icy apocalypse on 28th Feb. The epic tale will be available both digitally and physically for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC, as well as digitally for Xbox One.

Fimbul winter, the prelude to the end of the world known as Ragnarök, has begun. Elder berserker Kveldulver found death when bandits raided his village, killing him in the process. But the Norns, goddesses of fate and destiny, have other plans for Kveldulver.  The goddesses resurrect Kveldulver before sending him on a bloody quest to eradicate the Jotun giants and avert the apocalypse.

Told in a gripping comic book style, Kveldulver’s story will depend on player decisions, with numerous narrative branches to uncover. As the Norns are the goddesses who spin the threads of fate, they have imbued Kveldulver with the power to go back to pivotal moments in his journey and explore different outcomes.

Throughout his legendary adventure, Kveldulver will meet a large cast of characters, some friend, some foe. Of these enemies, select few must be defeated in battle before Kveldulver can decide their fate.

Kveldulver will also find both stories detailing the world around him and ways to improve his fighting skill. Certain items, weapons and talents enhance the old warrior’s abilities. He’ll need them all to overcome deadly warriors, horrific monsters, and gigantic Jotun alike. Combat is simple to learn, but as players explore the ways of the battlefield, they’ll discover nuances that will prove essential during awe-inspiring boss battles.

Review: AC Odyssey – Legacy of the First Blade Episode 2 ‘Shadow Heritage’

A new year has begun and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is ready to continue its first story expansion with Chapter 2 of ‘Legacy of the First Blade” called Heritage. Darius, the first wielder of the hidden blade, has summoned Alexios/Kassandra to the Achaia region as the Order of the Ancients is there with a mysterious and powerful enemy known as ‘The Tempest’ has taken the region hostage by controlling the seas.  So, it is time to help Darius take on the Order once again, learn more about this legendary Assassin.

The most appealing aspect to ‘Legacy of the First Blade’ expansion for me is the story which continues to bring Odyssey more in line with a traditional Assassin’s Creed game as it gives players the opportunity to understand and see how the war between the Assassins and the Templars began so many centuries ago that started with AC Origins. As a long-term fan of the AC series, it is thrilling to see how the foundations of the war began even before each side were known as the Assassins and Templar Order.  In ‘Hunted’ we began to learn more about Darius and the reasons why he killed the Persian King Xerxes and the repercussions that lead to him going on the run and into hiding for so many years until he comes into contact with Alexios/Kassandra. My hope for this next chapter was to learn even more but I never expected it to go where it did, and I am glad it did take me there.

Gameplay again is very familiar in Heritage to the first chapter Hunted in that Darius will reveal that the Order of the Ancients is active in Achaia and Alexios/Kassandra must assist in hunting them down and eradicating them from the region to protect the people and Greece itself. What does change it up just a little more is that with Achaia being a coastal region it now adds in some naval battles into the mix which are fun from the standard “go here kill this person” objectives. I do feel that the story borrows heavily from the game’s main campaign story a little too much but overall it also makes complete sense that the Order of the Ancients would not have put all their eggs in one basket.

That basket turns out to be The Tempest, a powerful enemy that has a fleet of ships and we enter the story discovering that some refugees were attacked by The Tempest and had ships and properties taken but are also trapped on Achaia as they are being hunted down and the only way to escape is by sea which is controlled by The Tempest. The main objective is to secure the people and help them escape by taken down the Tempest. Like before, there are a number of members of the Order that can also be hunted down but the story mainly focuses on The Tempest making them more of a side objective but I did have to find the clues to reveal their location unlike in Hunted where I would simply happen upon them by just exploring the area doing objectives.

Discovering that The Tempest is also a tainted one, and much like Alexios/Kassandra depending on which of them the player chose to play as, was also taken by The Order and turned into a weapon for them shows that the Order is capable of bouncing back from what could have been considered a big victory against them. It is a little on the nose to basically have a shortened down version of the main story in this chapter of the DLC but it still works to drive the story of Alexios/Kassandra forward. There is a theme of trying to find a peaceful life which is where the relationship between your chosen hero and the child of Darius will come into play, for me it was Neema, the daughter for who my Alexios began to grow closer too in the first chapter Hunted and more so here. But here is where the controversy has arisen with this expansion, player choice.

Through out this chapter players will again have the opportunity to shape the story by their choices in dialogue and key sequences that change the possible outcome. This can result in the survival of a side character but for many, one particular choice has been seen to be more the illusion of player choice as ultimately, the big decision that comes at the end of the DLC only looks as though players can choose how it ends, only for the game to decide to ignore it and tell its own story in order to set the narrative going forward into the final chapter of this expansion. Now for me, my choices naturally led me to making the choice that allowed for the ending to play out as it would have anyway and is one, I am comfortable with. However, I fully understand and even Ubisoft themselves have come out in the last day or so since this DLC released, to say they missed the mark on. The main campaign has multiple endings for example which depend on player choice at key moments in the whole campaign will dictate that ending. So far, this DLC has ignored the ending to the main campaign, in fact neither of the first two chapters even reference whichever ending the player got themselves. That alone made my ending here a little off centre in terms of logic but it was still an ending I can live with and understand why it played out that way.

It will be a subjective problem though, not everyone will feel angry about it and there is a common-sense reason why a game’s narrative will eventually have to snap into line in order to progress into the next part of the DLC but I can appreciate why some are rightfully annoyed and angry at this turn of events for this chapter. Lengthwise it took me about 4 hours to complete the main story quests and side objectives so is still in line with the first chapter but did give me a reason to return to Odyssey as at the moment I only have the weekly challenges to bring me back to the game.

I am really enjoying this DLC expansion story and I am truly looking forward to seeing how it ends in the next chapter before we move on to the next story expansion. Having more story is a good thing and for me getting to see my Alexios continue to grow after events in the main campaign is fun but especially in how its connects to Assassin’s Creed lore with the opportunity to learn more about Darius. It does feel like a natural progression of the overall AC Odyssey story and by chopping the expansion into three parts, it does shorten the play time of each chapter but so far, each one has had more than enough to do for a 4-5 hour game session and brings new weapons and improvements in this chapter to your ship in the form of a very powerful new weapon which fans of the photo mode will indeed appreciate.

I am intrigued to see how this expansion comes to an end and especially in seeing where it leaves my Alexios. So far enough new content is being dropped each month in and around Season Pass content drops to keep AC Odyssey fresh for fans which is a good evolution for AC games.

What’s in the box?

The box contains the XPC cube, some instructions, cables, screws and thermal paste for the processor.

A Closer Look

Final Thoughts

Like the other Shuttle XPC cubes, the SH370R6 Plus is fairly small, but don’t let its form factor put you off – this thing can fit a lot in and can pack a punch!

The case is a lovely black and it can easily sit as a media PC in your living room and fit in with any other high end media equipment. You could also just as easily have it in a bedroom or office as PC – the choice is yours depending on what you put in the case itself.

Gaining access to the insides is just a case of unscrewing two thumbscrews and slipping off the case – it’s really simple. And just as simple to put it all back together again.

The cube itself includes a power supply and a motherboard and also the CPU cooler, but you will need to supply your own hard drive, processor and memory, and you can also add your own graphics card too if you want to use something extra, two in fact, and if you are building a games machine you will probably want to do that so that you have the best graphics you can. The Shuttle website has a detailed list of supported components you can use, so make sure you check that out before you go ahead and buy anything.

Everything is already connected for you as well making it just a case of adding those components – everything else has been done for you which will both save you time and make it less fiddly.

I’m not going to talk about the performance of the cube because this will all depend on what you decide to use, but whatever you select it is very easy to fit into the cube and be ready to use!

The SH370R6 Plus supports HDMI 2.0 4K / 60Hz video playback and 5.1 Channel HD audio so using it for playing back media such as movies and music works really well. You can also fit a blu-ray drive into it if you so wish.

It can also run three independent monitors if that’s what you want it to do.

Add to that USB 3.1 Gen2 ports, 1000 Mpbs Ethernet ports, and a host of other functionality, the SH370R6 Plus is an ideal solution for all your work and play or should that be play and work needs.

The Shuttle XPC Cube SH370R6 Plus Barebone Mini PC is available now priced around £300.

OPPO unveiled 10x lossless zoom, product to debut at MWC 2019

OPPO today held its 2019 Future Technology Communication Conference where the company revealed its forthcoming 10x lossless zoom technology. Speaking at the conference, an OPPO spokesperson indicated that the 10x lossless zoom technology meets commercial standards and is ready for mass production. OPPO will showcase the breakthrough technology in Barcelona at MWC 2019.

To employ the new technology, OPPO has developed a triple-camera solution consisting of “Ultra Wide Angle + Ultra Clear Master + Telephoto”. The ultra-wide-angle camera has an equivalent focal range of 15.9mm, bringing a unique capability to the wide-angle viewfinder. The primary camera guarantees photo quality, and the telephoto camera, with 159mm equivalent focal range, combined with the original “peep-up structure” to support high-magnification zoom, can ensure a high-quality long-distance shot.

OPPO’s innovative “triple-camera-relay” 10x lossless zoom technology

All three cameras operate in tandem to maximize their respective advantages, optimize imaging quality at various zoom ranges to achieve 10x zoom in a relay manner. To maintain image quality at all ranges, OPPO has introduced dual OIS optical image stabilization on both standard and telephoto cameras.

Original technology to create a clearer telephoto quality

In addition to the triple-camera structure, OPPO’s pioneering “periscope structure ” is also paramount to achieving 10x lossless zoom. The periscope-inspired design makes full use of the width and thickness of the phone through the lateral arrangement and refraction of the lens set. The space is saved, and the mobile phone can use a larger optical component under the premise of ensuring that the mobile phone body is thin and light, so that the mobile phone has a telephoto shooting capability.

In addition, OPPO uses the industry benchmark-level drop tests to ensure the reliability of the camera module. Among them, the prism part experienced two rounds of drop tests, with each round consisting1 0,000 times on the front and back sides, and 2,000 times on the remaining four sides, adding to a total of 28,000 drop tests.

OPPO launches next-generation biometrics

As the “last surprise” of this communication conference, OPPO also released a new wide zone optical fingerprint recognition technology, which effectively recognizes an area up to 15 times of the current mainstream optical solution. Users can unlock or pay by using fingerprint anywhere in the entire area. The on-screen optical fingerprint sensor provides users with a flexible, free and interactive experience that is also easy, natural and just right.

OPPO announces the wide zone optical fingerprint recognition at a technical communication session.

OPPO wide zone optical fingerprint recognition contains innovative functions including two-finger simultaneous entry and authentication, which exponentially improve payment security, achieving a security level 50,000 times of that of a single fingerprint. In addition, the next-generation solution also incorporates the “Optical Encryption” feature. Compared to the traditional two-step operations, where users have to activate the encryption application before they are able to unlock, all applications in the “Optical Encryption Area” can be activated, authenticated and unlocked with one click. Products equipped with optical domain screen fingerprint technology will be launched in 2019, as suggested by an OPPO spokesperson.

OPPO wide zone optical fingerprint recognition fits in one-hand operation space

Technology breakthroughs in smartphone photography are crucial to enhancing user experience. OPPO, as an important enabler of mobile imaging technology, has been continuously exploring and innovating in the field of mobile computing optics, and is at the forefront of the industry. As the pioneer of hybrid optical zoom technology, OPPO’s innovation also makes mobile photography one step closer towards professional image quality. OPPO will continue to drive the development of mobile imaging.

We will be at MWC 2019 getting first look at the new tech from Oppo.

Salt and Sanctuary Washes Ashore on Xbox One on 6th Feb

0

At long last Salt and Sanctuary, Ska Studios’ brutal hand-drawn 2D Soulslike platformer with more than 900,000 downloads, prepares to strike Xbox One on 6th Feb, with the help of porting specialist BlitWorks.

After an ill-fated journey at sea leaves their ship and crew annihilated by a creature lurking in the depths, the protagonist washes ashore on a strange island. There, an old man gives them the mantle of the Saltborn, taunting them with riddles about buried secrets cursing these profane lands.

Vicious enemies lurk and prowl everywhere, from the haunting Village of Smiles to the poisonous Mire of Stench, hoping to cut the Saltborn down. More than twenty horrific bosses lord over their respective areas intent on tearing hopeful adventurers to shreds. What haunting past are these monstrosities trying to prevent the Saltborn from discovering?

Salt and Sanctuary asks a lot from those who seek answers, but the heart-racing combat never feels unfair. Customize the Saltborn’s appearance and preferred loadout, and conquer the island in whatever fashion leaves behind naught but plundered chests and the viscera of fallen foes.

Wield a wide array of weaponry and armor, but know that some armaments struggle against certain foes. Deploy Fire and Sky spells to scorch and shock the opposition, but be wary of leaning too much on either one as neglecting elemental balance leads to rapid self-destruction. Enhance the Saltborn over time through a massive skill tree that expands as the game progresses.

Solve the mystery of the island but prepare to dive back in through New Game+ and Challenge Modes, such as no-blocking and permadeath modes that add an extra degree of challenge. Or, hand an Xbox One Wireless Controller to a friend and work together in local co-op to conquer the island.

“Xbox holds a special place in our hearts because of how important The Dishwasher was to us personally and for Ska Studios as a company, so we’re glad to make this homecoming happen,” said Michelle and James Silva, co-creators at Ska Studios. “Everyone who emailed us demanding an Xbox One port, will now be able to finally enjoy our creepy creation!”

Salt and Sanctuary releases digitally for Xbox One for $17.99 on 6th Feb, and will be available in in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

HONOR View20 – an unrivalled flagship smartphone with world-leading features

HONOR View20 represents the company’s latest entrance into the flagship market, bringing top technical performance and hitting next level design and style. The cutting-edge smartphone is equipped with the world’s first high-definition 48MP rear camera.

Extreme performance with latest technologies in mind

HONOR View20 is the first model to be equipped with advanced 7nm Kirin 980 AI chipset with dual NPU for the overseas market; GPU Turbo 2.0, which greatly improves graphic performance; and a 4,000 mAh battery with SuperCharge.

The Kirin 980 chipset represents a 75% improvement of speed in single core performance compared to the previous generation. The Kirin 980 also includes Mali-G76 GPU to improve performance by 46%. HONOR View20’s performance has significantly increased, while reducing its energy consumption by 58%, providing a revolutionary advancement in user experience.

Next generation in design and aesthetics

From a design perspective, HONOR View20 is the first smartphone to use advanced nanolithography technology to develop an invisible nano texture on the phone body. The fourth generation of nano-vacuum coating and invisible aurora texture process create a vivid and dynamic V-shape colour gradient with a gleaming effect, breaking the mould of traditional flagship smartphones in dimension and style.

The global launch of the HONOR View20 will take place in Paris on 22nd January. More product feature highlights for the global market will be unveiled at that time.

The new additions to the V by Vodafone range are designed to help us live smarter, with a focus on ease of use, value for money and peace of mind. V by Vodafone brings together and connects all kinds of smart devices for every part of your life, allowing you to track or monitor your children, pet, car, bag and even your home while you’re away – all through an app on your smartphone.

All V by Vodafone connected devices are powered by Vodafone’s fast, reliable network. Thanks to simple, flat-fee pricing, backed by Vodafone’s V-Sim Price Promise, you can say goodbye to worrying about unexpected charges – even when you’re abroad in most European countries.

The ‘V-Multi Tracker by Vodafone’ TrackiSafe Mini – the GPS tracker that keeps you connected to the things that matters most

With the new V-Multi Tracker, you can keep track of your possessions through a simple app on your smartphone, so you don’t have to worry about the things you love going walkabout without you.

Whether it’s your keys or laptop, the V-Multi Tracker will show you where it is, where it’s been and will send an alert directly to your smartphone via the TrackiSafe app if it leaves a certain area.

The V-Multi Tracker will also give you speed alerts if your things start moving and will notify you through the app on your smartphone.

What’s more, if you leave the tracker with a loved one and there’s an emergency or they need help, they can press an SOS button to send you an app alert or email with their coordinates.

At just 39mm wide, 12mm high and weighing less that 20g, it’s also small and lightweight, so will easily clip on to your laptop case, keys or whatever you want to track and is splash proof.

The ‘V-Pet Tracker by Vodafone’ Pod 3 – a 24/7 activity monitor and GPS tracker for your pet

With the new light and compact V-Pet Tracker Pod 3 on their collar you’ll feel even more connected to your pet.

The V-Pet Tracker is a tracker for dogs and large cats that tracks their location whether they’re indoors or outdoors – so you’ll worry less if they wander out of sight when you walk them, or if they don’t come home as expected when they’re out on the prowl.

You can also set ‘safe zones’ so that you are alerted when your pet strays somewhere they shouldn’t and check that they’re exercising and resting when they should be, thanks to the activity monitor.

The latest V-Pet Tracker is both waterproof and pet-proof, meaning it can withstand whatever is thrown its way – from wild weather walks to rough and tumble play. And your pet won’t even know it’s there!

The simple to replace, rechargeable batteries also make it easy to keep tabs on your pet for longer – just swap in the spare battery included when one’s running low, without taking the tracker off their collar.

The ‘V-Bag Tracker by Vodafone’ TrackiSafe Luggage – enjoy your travels knowing your bags are safe

The new V-Bag Tracker is designed to give you peace of mind when you travel by connecting you and your bag.

With its GPS, light sensors and personalised safe zones, you’ll know where your bag is and receive an alert directly to your smartphone via the TrackiSafe app if it has moved. You can set Safe Zones, such as your hotel, so you’ll receive an alert if your bag moves from designated zones.

If you’re not sure where your bag is, you can find it on a map on the app, in any area where there is GPS coverage and a Vodafone network signal.

What’s more, the light sensor will alert you if your bag is opened unexpectedly, and the move and speed alerts will let you know if your bag starts moving over a certain speed – so you’ll know if someone takes it away in a moving vehicle for instance.

The V-Bag Tracker is also credit-card sized, waterproof and lightweight, so it won’t take up valuable packing space. It has a typical battery life of three to four days.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 coming to the UK on the 16th January

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, UK release date set in stone via the official Xiaomi UK Twitter account, the phone will be released on Wednesday 16th January starting at 12:00 PM GMT.

You’ll be able to buy the Mi Mix 3 at Xiaomi’s website, Amazon UK, and Ebuyer, and for January 16 only, the phone can be yours for just £449.

Mi Mix 3 is most noteworthy for its 6.39-inch AMOLED display with an impressive screen-to-body ratio of 93.4%. Xiaomi was able to achieve such a high percentage by moving the front-facing cameras to a hidden portion of the Mix 3 that slides up above the screen

The phone includes a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 12MP + 12MP dual rear cameras, up to 10GB of RAM, NFC, and more.

Quick unboxing of the new Honor View 20 with a 48-megapixel camera

The Honor View 20 is a lot more than simply a phone that wants to be the first to rock this new design, and there are lots of other features to get excited about.

Powering the phone is the same 7nm Kirin 980 SoC you’ll find in the Huawei Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro.

That chip is paired with 6GB/8GB of RAM – the version I am using has 8GB – and storage options up to 256GB, the device is a 6.4inch with a 1080p screen.

The battery capacity on the Honor View 20 is a 4000mAh. Pair that with the efficient chip and 1080p display and you’ve got a phone that should be good when it comes to endurance. More details on performance and battery life in the full review, in a little while.

Sapphire Blue and Midnight Black

The rear also houses a distinctive ‘V’ laser-etched shape that appears to move in the light.

Honor has even found room to keep the 3.5mm headphone jack on the top of the device.

On the back of the View 20 are the new Sony IMX586 48-megapixel camera sensor and a secondary TOF (time of flight) sensor that’s there to help with 3D object recognition.

The 3D sensor on the Honor View 20 can be used for AR gaming and it’ll function in a similar way to Microsoft’s Kinect.

With the Honor View 20, the phone default set to shoot 12-megapixel images, with the option of 48-megapixel available in the Settings panel. There’s also a 25-megapixel in-display camera on the front.

Pricing and availability will be announced on the 22nd of January in Paris.
