Viking games trending among Australian gamers in 2023

0

Conquer Australia and you’ll conquer the world. That’s the attitude among today’s game studios and developers as Australia has grown into one of the world’s gaming hotspots over the past decade. That has particularly been so since the events of 2020/21. Australia reacted ruthlessly to the threat at the time, but has recovered fast, and is enjoying relative prosperity while much of the world battles economic hardship.

With more disposable cash than most, Australia is a more vital market than ever for the gaming industry. Trends are studied closely and taken seriously, including a recent fascination with an age-old gaming theme.

Viking spirit is alive and well down under

Vikings have been capturing our imaginations for generations in the world of literature, poetry and film. Viking-themed games have been part of the gaming landscape since the 8-bit days of the 1980s. However, they are more popular among Australian gamers than ever before. Let’s take a look at some of the titles that have been dominating the Aussie market in recent weeks.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla is the most popular instalment yet

The Assassin’s Creed series of games was an instant success down under from the moment of its debut in 2007. Valhalla, the latest, and most would say the greatest title in the action RPG series, is set in the Viking era. The player adopts the role of Eivor, a Viking leader who marshals his clan to a new settlement in England. No sooner does he arrive than he finds himself in the thick of a centuries-old battle between the Assassin Brotherhood and the Templar Order that will be familiar to anyone who has played other games in the series.

The game has the rich graphics and smooth controls that players have come to expect, but what sets it apart is its rich and intelligent storyline. Also, Australian players with a liking for history must take some gratification in going back in time and being part of the Great Heathen Army that invaded the Old Country.

Thunderstruck II is a new take on a casino classic

Australians just adore their pokies – or slot games as they are known in the rest of the world. Thunderstruck was one of the staples of the early online casino days, launched by Microgaming way back in 2003. The new and improved Thunderstruck II has been around for a while too now, but Australian casino players consistently rank it in the top three online casino slots in Australia due to its production values, playability and fair RTP rating.

Special symbols include the Thunderstruck II symbol, which acts as a wild and Thor’s Hammer, which is a scatter. Three of these launch a free spins game, and that is when the rewards can really start to mount up.

Expeditions: Vikings was an unexpected success

This tactical RPG was a follow up to Expeditions: Conquistador. While the first game was a hit among the gaming geeks, Vikings achieved a mainstream success Down Under that even surprised the developers.

Praised for its grim but atmospheric setting, this has proved to be a game that everyone can get into, including casual gamers. The open world setting provides a world of opportunities beyond the standard looting

Review: Harmony: The Fall of Reverie

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie is a stunning visual novel title. What’s more, it has various branching subplots, a host of intriguing characters, and an incredible world to explore. Moreover, it seamlessly blends real-world narratives with a strange fantasy existence. As such, it tells an incredibly emotive story that is tough to put down.

Developed and published by DON’T NOD, this is an accomplished visual novel title. What’s more, it has swathes of strange moments and masses of protagonists and antagonists to enjoy. Accordingly, you’ll navigate a brilliantly paced plot that enables you to control the narrative.

Power tries to set you on the right path.
Can Power help you?

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie is captivating.

The fantasy elements within this game could become distracting. However, the emotional family ties cement all the madness together. Therefore, no matter the direction you take, the story always focuses on the hero’s desires. This was great, as it keeps the otherwise absurd elements grounded.

You are Polly, a girl who returns home after years of travelling. Yet, once she arrives at her mother’s house, things aren’t as they seem. The beautiful Mediterranean setting is spoilt as her mother is missing. Moreover, a megacorporation called MK is endangering the local populous. The hero soon discovers she has the gift of clairvoyance. This new power enables her to travel to another realm called Reverie. From here, she can choose her destiny and how they save mankind.

Exceptional storytelling!

Visual novels are tough to review as I don’t want to spoil a thing. Where Harmony: The Fall of Reverie excels is its exceptional storytelling. I won’t ruin anything, but the node-based progression system allows you to take the paths you wish to see. However, occasionally, your hands are tied as nodes are locked or prerequisites have not been met. When this happens, you may have to revisit a previous chapter to tweak the narrative.

The action focuses on 6 aspirations. Glory, Bliss, Power, Chaos, Bond, and Truth are vying to become the leader of the “Aspiration” realm. Each of these emotions is represented by strong and demanding characters. Accordingly, the writers have nailed each trait perfectly. For example, Power pushes for actions to be completed immediately. Furthermore, he has no flexibility in his approach. Alternatively, Bond (one of my favourite characters), desired peace and a rounded viewpoint. The blend of characters created a genuinely intriguing plot that was tough to predict. What’s more, there was no right or wrong and that was fantastic.

Choose your path and decide your fate.
Which path will you take?

Excellent mechanics.

Polly or Harmony’s new gift is represented in the Augural. This overworld enables the player to see the events of the upcoming chapter. Additionally, it highlights the requirements to unlock the chapter outcomes. Therefore, if you wish to focus on chaos, as an example, you can push the plot and events towards this aspiration.

Thankfully, though, you don’t need to endure a one-dimensional story. Instead, you are free to blend complementary emotions to create a varied experience. This was phenomenal, as it represents the inner turmoil we all experience. This idea is further cemented thanks to the awesome inner monologue of the hero. The touching and often secretive thoughts often juxtapose the surrounding world and the characters you are interacting with. Consequently, it creates a deep and rich narrative that works on many levels.

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie is gorgeous.

This genre isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. However, you have to admire its artistry. Harmony: The Fall of Reverie has to be one of the best-looking VN games I ever played. The stunning character models, the exceptional backdrops, and the vivid colour palette are gorgeous. Alongside this, the basic animation seamlessly links each scene. In short, the developers have done an incredible job of creating an almost cinematic experience.

The audio wonderfully complements the visual approach. Every character was brilliantly voiced, and the casting was exceptional. Subsequently, at no point did the story flounder or fail. Instead, each branching moment followed without issue. On top of this, the music was stunning. The airy and often dreamlike soundtrack creates a sense of wonderment. However, occasionally, there was a call for aggression and drama, and the score matched these moments.

The battle between Chaos and Power.
Chaos will not back down.

So much replay value.

Like its peers, this has a simple control system. Consequently, you can relax, have a drink and enjoy the flowing action. Furthermore, there is an auto-text option to speed things up if you so wish. As such, you won’t worry about complicated gameplay or a tough learning curve.

Visual novels are renowned for their replay value. However, Harmony: The Fall of Reverie goes above and beyond! With multiple subplots and 6 champions to focus on, you can revisit this multiple times. Additionally, the combination of each aspiration and the varied monologues makes this a fascinating and moreish experience.

Harmony: The Fall of Reverie is a market-leading title.

If you’ve never experienced this genre, then I suggest you start here. Yes, there are some amazing alternatives, but Harmony: The Fall of Reverie is a market-leading title. Accordingly, I recommend that you buy it here! Can you control your destiny and save mankind? Choose a champion or stay balanced as you explore this wonderful story.

Is Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty as Good as People Say It Is?

0

Team Ninja has done it again! After releasing Nioh and Nioh 2 and after setting new standards for Souls-like games, the Tokyo-based developer set the bar even higher with the release of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. Apart from creating their first game where the story unfolds in China, Team Ninja has also made significant improvements to the battle and the reward system. Those who loved Nioh will love Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and those who are unfamiliar with Team Ninja games but who will pay for a copy of the game will feel like their money was well spent.

Team Ninja took a pretty big gamble, releasing Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty during a year with multiple best-sellers. Their decision could have backfired, as every gamer’s budget is relatively limited and as everyone thinks twice before purchasing a new game. Nevertheless, the sales of the game show that there is an audience that favours games like Wo Long. This stage-based linear RPG earns a lot of points with its user-friendliness, its storyline and its post-game value. It is a game both for players who are looking for 40 hours of gameplay as well as for those who are looking for a game that will keep them busy for 1000 hours. Those who have played Nioh will understand how the duration of the game can stretch for so many hours.

Wo Long Is a Brand-New Game

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is not to be confused with the popular Wu Long slot game, although there are plenty of thematic similarities. Team Ninja’s game is for players who are looking for a fast-paced role-playing game and Wu Long is for players who enjoy playing online casino games with multiple paylines, bonus rounds, and wilds. The main thing the two games have in common is that they are China-themed. Everything else is very different. This does not mean that RPG fans cannot enjoy online casino games, but the name resemblance of the two games can lead to some confusion.

What Are the Critics Saying about Wo Long?

Most reviewers agree that Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a great game, which is a lot better than the two Nioh games and better than many other Souls-like games. Those who have played it say that it is a faster-paced alternative to FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The game will work against the player, just like Nioh, but it is definitely not as hard as Elden Ring or Dark Souls. The New Game + cycles and the DLCs will keep the players coming back for more and this is something that increases the gameplay value.

What Comes Next for Team Ninja? The Japanese studio is still working on DLC content and on updates for Wo Long, but this does not mean that they are not working on other projects in parallel. Team Ninja is in the final development stages of Rise of the Ronin, which is scheduled for release in 2024. At the same time, the studio is working on another unannounced title. Some believe that the unannounced title is the third instalment of Nioh, others believe that it is going to be the new Ninja Gaiden and there are also those who believe that the game remains a secret because it is a joint project with another major studio.

Review: PowerWash Simulator: SpongeBob DLC

PowerWash Simulator: SpongeBob DLC enhances an already addictive title. Moreover, it increases the already preposterous additional content that is available. This colourful endeavour will mainly be enjoyed by fans of the vivid cartoon program. However, you’ll be entertained whether you love the franchise or not.

Developed by FuturLab and published by Square Enix, this is a cleaning simulation title. Furthermore, the DLC is so far devoid of realism that you’ll chuckle repeatedly. This underwater addition is madness personified. Consequently, you’ll lose yourself in a silly and vivid world that’s full of familiar places and oodles of dirt.

Make sure you clean every flag.
Clean the flags and make everything better.

PowerWash Simulator: SpongeBob DLC maintains a high standard.

The base game was an experience that no one knew they wanted. Yet, once you cracked the lid on this cleaning simulation title, you struggled to put it back on. Accordingly, the DLC follows suit with its casual approach and moreish action. Additionally, 6 crazy levels create a weird and vibrant escape from the base games’ realistic approach.

Unlike the original, PowerWash Simulator: SpongeBob DLC offers no new equipment to buy. Instead, you must work with the tools you already own. However, there is one additional costume change that suits your nautical environment. Other than this, the DLC performs exactly as you’d expect. Moreover, the controls are the same and the game is wonderfully easy to pick up and play.

A quick overview.

Each level is covered in different layers of grime. Consequently, you are called to each job to clean every surface and leave the place sparkling. This peaceful experience has no combat or time restraints and is the perfect tool to unwind. Yet, there are still frustrating moments as you try to clean a pineapple house or the “Krusty Krab”.

You’ll leap off towers and stand on stools as you try to clean every nook and cranny. Thankfully, the developers aren’t monsters as they allow you to buy specialist cleaning sprays to speed up the job. However, every penny you spend will reduce your profit margin. As such, it is probably better to switch between nozzles rather than waste money on soaps and sprays.

Finally, there is a multiplayer free-play option if you want to clean up with your friends. This mode is great fun and the servers are lag free. Yet, be aware that each level’s progress is saved to the host only. Consequently, you may wish to take it, in turn, to host to ensure you don’t fall too far behind.

Would you want to drive a dirty burger car?
No one wants to drive a dirty burger car.

PowerWash Simulator: SpongeBob DLC looks great.

FuturLab has created a cult title that everyone loves. Furthermore, their eye for detail and polished graphics are adored by every fan. As such, I knew that PowerWash Simulator: SpongeBob DLC would look great. The fantastic buildings and the accurate stage design were amazing to look at. I loved cleaning SpongeBob’s house and chuckled as I was asked to wash an invisible car. On top of this, the final level is a ball ache, and I cherished the moment that I finally cleaned it all.

The audio will drive you potty! The constant sound of water hitting every dirty surface is mind-numbing. Moreover, the basic sound effects for each spray or cleaning agent were equally annoying. Yet, the fun and frolicsome music was amusing and helped to distract you from the less palatable sounds. As such, if you can overlook the persistent whooshing noises, you’ll enjoy every song.

Clean the sign and see what is being sold.
So, that’s what you were selling.

Decent controls.

The developers have done a great job with the controls and the UI. Furthermore, they’ve kept with the original control layout and that makes things much easier. If, like me, you haven’t played the original in some time, then fear not. Luckily, the control layout is highlighted at the start of each level and the controls are simple to work out. Additionally, the responsive inputs and helpful ladders, towers, and steps ensure that you can clean every location with ease.

6 levels weren’t enough for me. I flew through the DLC in no time at all, and I desperately wanted more. As such, I wish there was more content, as it ended far too prematurely for my liking. Yet, thanks to the multiplayer action, there is longevity and replay value. What’s more, the inclusion of 10 new achievements will be welcomed by any completionists or trophy hunters.

PowerWash Simulator: SpongeBob DLC is great fun.

This was always going to be a winner, as I love the base game! PowerWash Simulator: SpongeBob DLC is a dirty, demanding, and enjoyable experience from beginning to end. However, it is just a shame that the end comes a bit too soon for my liking. Yet, if you love the idea of cleaning Bikini Bottom, then you won’t want to miss this excellent DLC. Accordingly, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you strip Bikini Bottom of its grim and slimy dirt? Grab your pressure washer, study your surroundings, and make every item shine like a new penny.

Scaling Software Architecture: Strategies for Handling Increased Workloads

0

Introduction

As software systems grow and user demands increase, scaling the architecture becomes crucial to maintain performance, reliability, and user satisfaction. Scaling software architecture involves implementing strategies that allow the system to handle larger workloads efficiently. This article explores various strategies for scaling software architecture, including vertical and horizontal scaling, caching, load balancing, microservices, and database scaling. By understanding these strategies and applying them appropriately, software development teams can design and build scalable systems that can handle increased workloads without sacrificing performance or user experience.

Vertical Scaling

Vertical scaling involves adding more resources, such as CPU, memory, or storage, to a single server or node within the architecture. Key considerations include:

  1. Scaling Up Hardware: Upgrading the existing server by adding more powerful components, such as increasing RAM or CPU capacity.
  1. Limitations and Costs: Vertical scaling has limitations in terms of the maximum capacity of a single server, and it can become costly as higher-end hardware is required.
  1. Benefits and Trade-offs: Vertical scaling is relatively simpler to implement and can provide immediate performance improvements. However, it may not be as cost-effective or scalable in the long run compared to other strategies.

Horizontal Scaling

Horizontal scaling involves adding more servers or nodes to the system, distributing the workload across multiple instances. Consider the following aspects:

  1. Load Balancing: Distributing incoming requests across multiple servers using load balancers to evenly distribute the workload and improve performance.
  1. Statelessness: Designing the system to be stateless, where each request can be handled independently without relying on server-specific data, enabling seamless scalability.
  1. Elasticity: Leveraging cloud computing platforms to dynamically provision or remove resources based on workload demands, ensuring optimal resource utilization.

Caching

Caching involves storing frequently accessed data in a cache, reducing the need for repeated database or resource-intensive operations. Key considerations include:

  1. Caching Mechanisms: Implementing caching mechanisms, such as in-memory caches or content delivery networks (CDNs), to reduce response times and improve scalability. And you should definitely visit the Lemon.io platform because they offer access to skilled senior developers who are experts in anything related to software development.
  1. Cache Invalidation: Ensuring the cache remains consistent by implementing strategies to invalidate or update cached data when the underlying data changes.
  1. Cache Sizing and Eviction Policies: Properly sizing the cache and defining eviction policies to optimize cache utilization and prevent memory-related issues.

Load Balancing

Load balancing distributes incoming requests across multiple servers or nodes to ensure efficient resource utilization and prevent overload. Consider the following aspects:

  1. Load Balancer Types: Implementing various load balancing algorithms, such as round-robin, least connections, or weighted distribution, to evenly distribute the workload.
  1. High Availability: Using redundant load balancers to ensure continuous operation even if one load balancer fails.
  1. Dynamic Scaling: Integrating load balancers with auto-scaling mechanisms to automatically adjust the number of servers based on the current workload.

Microservices Architecture

Microservices architecture breaks down the application into smaller, loosely coupled services that can be independently developed, deployed, and scaled. Consider the following aspects:

  1. Service Decomposition: Identifying boundaries and decomposing the system into smaller services based on business capabilities or functional areas.
  1. Scalability of Services: Scaling individual services based on demand without affecting the entire system, enabling efficient resource allocation.
  1. Communication and Resilience: Implementing robust communication mechanisms, such as message queues or event-driven architectures, to ensure reliable inter-service communication and resilience.

Database Scaling

Database scaling involves strategies to handle increased data storage and access demands. Consider the following aspects:

  1. Replication: Creating replicas of the database to distribute read operations and improve read performance, ensuring high availability.
  1. Sharding: Partitioning data across multiple databases or shards based on specific criteria, such as user ID or geographical regions, to distribute write operations and scale storage.
  1. Database Caching: Implementing caching mechanisms, such as query result caching or object caching, to reduce database load and improve response times.

Conclusion

Scaling software architecture is crucial to handle increased workloads and ensure optimal performance. By employing strategies such as vertical and horizontal scaling, caching, load balancing, microservices architecture, and database scaling, software development teams can design and build scalable systems that efficiently handle growing demands. The selection of appropriate scaling strategies depends on factors like the nature of the application, workload patterns, and performance requirements. By implementing the right scaling strategies, software teams can ensure their systems remain responsive, reliable, and capable of delivering a seamless user experience as the workload continues to grow.

Review: Recursive Ruin

Every now and then you play a game that completely turns your brain inside out. Maybe the plot has multiple incomprehensible layers or the graphics are so bananas that some part of your brain just shuts down. Recursive Ruin was in danger of causing a total cranial explosion. It describes itself as a ‘kaleidoscopic first-person narrative puzzle game’ and the key word there is ‘kaleidoscopic’. Imagine you were shrunk down and then stuffed into a kaleidoscope and you’d have a decent idea of what it’s like to play Recursive Ruin.

It took a bit of an adjustment to get used to it. It was the same story with another key word, ‘puzzle’. So now we’re inside a kaleidoscope with a rubik’s cube. On top of that, we have a tragic story that gradually unfolds. The end result is a strong desire to sit down in a dark room. Recursive Ruin does marry its parts together rather well, though it does start to unravel towards the end.

Recursive Ruin - A level that repeats itself endlessly. The word 'JUMP' is seen in the foreground.

20 Goto 10

Trying to recount the plot of Recursive Ruin is going to be a losing battle. Let’s try it. A frustrated artist, fighting off the throes of depression and a deep-seated guilt, finds a game disc in his apartment and pops it in. Then a strange mannequin man with a violin and no face tells him that he has special powers. Kind of feels like we can stop the recount there. Through its bizarre imagery, Recursive Ruin touches on some quite poignant themes. There’s a strong feeling of artistic frustration for one, embodied by an artist who’s traded artistic freedom for a steady pay cheque.

It’s a theme that resonated with me personally. I’ve first hand experience of how working a routine job can blunt and squash creative passion. Recursive Ruin doesn’t stop there, though. It also brings up the effects of childhood trauma, and the complicated relationships it causes, as well as the destructive effects of grief. It was handled sensitively too and I found myself quite invested towards the end, even though the protagonist’s slightly janky voice acting did put something of a dent in it.

With all of this going on, you’re bound to end up with something crazy in the graphics department. As you can see in the screenshot above, it’s absolutely bonkers. The key is in the recursion – the world repeats itself ad infinitum. It’s a sea of stark, metallic colours. Shiny whites, blacks and reds. Look to the left and you’ll see the world repeated, complete with an infinite ‘you’s, all staring dumbfounded. It’s as fascinating as it is slightly sickening. It all contributes nicely to the protagonist’s internal struggle. Art, in its most distilled form, that’s trapped in an endless loop, coming back to haunt you.

Recursive Ruin - A floating blue eyeball that is repeatedly reflected. The protagonist holds a cube.

Man In The Mirror

There’s a tendency for games of this nature (and reviews of the same) to descend into overt self-indulgence. To wallow in the themes while thoroughly boring the audience. The lifeline that links it all together is the gameplay, bringing us to the ‘puzzle’ word in the genre description. The key element is a button that shifts the world around you, which either brings the recursion into focus or pushes it away. You can then interact with the repeated versions of the world. Pushing a cube through a window will result in it popping through the identical window behind you. It’s a little mind melting.

Once you get used to it, it makes for a handful of clever puzzles. The standout was a level with four buildings, each with their own mini puzzle inside, which required you to interact with smaller, mirrored versions of themselves. It was very imaginative and virtually impossible to explain in words. Suffice to say, it made me feel like a clever clogs once I’d figured it out. That said, there aren’t many meaty puzzles to be solved here, with a large percentage being transporting a cube to a nearby eyeball via a bit of casual world manipulation.

I suspect the emphasis is more on the ‘narrative’ than ‘puzzle’. That’s clear from the levels that are just us bumbling around our apartment, talking to our possibly demonic cat. At the start, Recursive Ruin does a good job at blending together its narrative and gameplay but then it starts falling apart. Levels that are just us walking forward start creeping in and there’s an increasing amount of time spent watching abstract videos. Video games have the unique potential to blend interaction and artistic meaning and Recursive Ruin gives it a go. All too soon though, it begins forgetting that we’re holding a controller and starts assuming there’s a box of popcorn there instead.

Recursive Ruin - A pale woman with a multi-coloured cube instead of a face, named Sioraiocht, tells the protagonist that the great seal is breaking down.

Try Googling Recursion

I do wonder how much I would’ve liked Recursive Ruin if the central themes hadn’t resonated with me from the beginning. Perhaps the kaleidoscopic visuals would’ve been just sickening, as opposed to fascinating. It’s definitely a game for a certain type of person in a certain mood. If you don’t have the patience for a game that likes to take the circuitous route, then you’ll probably tire of it quickly. I wouldn’t blame you – extended sessions did wear me down – but I do think you’d miss out.

There’s an emotional story at the heart of Recursive Ruin. I wouldn’t call it original but the presentation is certainly unique. At the halfway mark, I wasn’t even sure how I was going to review it. How would you review a film that paused every few minutes to send you down a rollercoaster? The unique aesthetics are paired with some promising gameplay but it never quite digs in deep enough. Best to play if you’re interested in some unconventional narrative. Though I would brace for deep sadness, only alleviated by a few jokes from a talking cat. Lucky sod. Best we writers get is a cat that communicates by scratching the sofa.

  • The 118 Leather Folio is beauty personified. Available in 4 colours, I opted for the classic black model. The Folio case has a rear pocket for slim items and a main internal compartment. To the top, there is a robust zip and a colour-matched zip pull. The inside of the Folio case is well organised with a central pocket and compartments on either side.

Build quality.

Grams(28) is renowned for their exceptional leather products. However, the 118 Leather Folio surprised me. Every element of this case was incredible. The stitch work is meticulous and the fine Italian leather begs to be handled. Moreover, the compact design has a substantial feel without being too heavy or uncomfortable to hold.

The black finish is complemented by the light brown internal material. This soft touch lining looks fantastic and protects your laptop or tablet. Furthermore, the strong and robust zip has a bronze finish that works well with the inner lining. This zip is sturdy and strong and comfortable to use. Additionally, the action is smooth and I have no fears that it’ll last the test of time.

So many compartments.

The 118 Leather Folio is a bit of a Tardis. Consequently, this refined product houses a lot more tech than first meets the eye. Thanks to its many internal compartments, you can comfortably carry around your essential daily items. With a pocket for your favourite pen, an area for USB devices, earbuds, paperwork, and other peripherals, this surprised me.

Alongside this, as long as you don’t overload it with bulky items, the Tech Folio case retains its slim and stylish appearance. As such, if you need to commute for work, or you simply want to stay under the radar at a work meeting, you can maintain a professional appearance without leaving any tech at home.

Is the 118 Leather Folio worth it?

You may baulk at the asking price of $239 USD. However, I still think this is great value for money. Yes, this Tech Folio case won’t be for everyone. Yet, if you wish to protect your prize assets whilst maintaining a professional appearance, then look no further. Moreover, the craftsmanship is second to none and the materials are stunning. Accordingly, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here!

Review: Monoprice 15-in-1 Triple-Display MST Docking Station

The Monoprice 15-in-1 Triple-Display MST Docking Station proves that convenience doesn’t have to mean compromise. This phenomenal device allows you to streamline your workspace whilst maintaining the highest standards. Moreover, it looks fantastic and it won’t break the bank.

This incredible tool allows you to connect up to 3 external displays at once. Furthermore, you can view an array of media devices and charge or connect several accessories at once. As such, you no longer need to scramble around looking for an array of connectors, as this accessory does it all! Accordingly, it is convenient, professional, and well-built.

What’s in the box of the Monoprice 15-in-1 Triple-Display MST Docking Station?

  • Monoprice saves money by simplifying its packaging. As such, the basic but striking monochromatic box does the job. What’s more, it safely houses its contents and can be recycled with ease.
  • The Monoprice 15-in-1 Triple-Display MST Docking Station is a thing of beauty. This sleek device is lightweight but substantial. Additionally, the ports are well placed and the brushed metal and plastic housing look pleasant to the eye.
  • The 150W DC power unit is designed for an American audience. Consequently, if you live elsewhere, you’ll need to invest in an adapter or transformer.
  • A 10G, 5A USB-C cable is provided. This 1-metre cable has a rubberised finish.
  • The user manual talks you through the fundamentals.

Technical aspects.

The Monoprice 15-in-1 Triple-Display MST Docking Station boasts an awful lot of technology in such a small device. Accordingly, you’ll have to bear with me as I go through each section. However, in short, this is jam-packed with market-leading tech that will revolutionise the way you work.

Workflow management is a nightmare for any busy streamer or those that work from home. Alternatively, maybe you want to expand your workspace without the hassle of multiple devices and tons of cables. Well, thankfully, now you can. Thanks to the four 4K outputs, you can simultaneously connect up to 3 external displays. With 2 HDMI outputs and 2 DP outputs, there are plenty of choices on hand.

One of the HDMI ports is restricted to 4K/30Hz, whereas the other 3 ports support 4K/60Hz. Consequently, you can enjoy excellent resolution as well as a smoother refresh rate. Fortunately, it is easy to identify each port, so you can select the maximum settings without a problem.

If you are stuck for a reliable HDMI or DP cable, then I suggest you look no further than these options. 1. The Monoprice DisplayPort 1.4 to 8K HDMI cable. 2. The Monoprice 8K Braided Ultra High-Speed Cable.

USB-C ports.

The incredible output power was one thing. However, I was amazed by the data transfer rate via the USB-C ports. The Monoprice 15-in-1 Triple-Display MST Docking Station can accommodate a range of leading tablets, mobile phones, and other peripherals. Moreover, with lightning-fast 10Gbps data transfer speeds, you’ll be blown away. I was amazed by how easy and quick it was to access and move files from my tablet and phone. Consequently, not only is this easy to use, but it’s a time saver as well.

Alongside this, Monoprice has incorporated a max output 30W PD downstream port. As such, you can keep your phone or tablet charged whilst you focus on more important tasks.

The surprises keep coming.

This device has 3 USB-A ports as well as the latest in SD and MicroSD card ports. Subsequently, you can enjoy up to 10Gbps from the USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports. This allows for rapid data transfer or the use of essential peripherals such as a mouse and keyboard.

The card readers follow suit with their blistering pace. The SD4.0 standard allows for transfers up to 312Mbps. This incredible speed reduces frustration while allowing you to get on with your day.

You may think that a slower transfer rate isn’t a problem. However, I find it a distraction to have multiple tasks running at once. Therefore, having the ability to complete each job quicker was a game-changer that helped to reduce stress and workload.

Do you want wired internet and stable charging? Not a problem!

You may be thinking, “What else can this thing do?”. Well, there is more for me to discuss. A wired internet connection is an essential element of any business operation. As such, why not include a monstrously powerful port in this amazing docking station? A Gigabit Ethernet port ensures that you have a stable and reliable connection at your fingertips. Consequently, you can enjoy lag-free gaming, streaming, or video calls.

Finally, this device has intelligent power allocation! Therefore, a maximum of 96W is allocated to host charging. Moreover, 150W is shared across the whole dock, enabling each port to gain ample power.

Build quality.

The Monoprice 15-in-1 Triple-Display MST Docking Station epitomises everything that is great about the business world. The smart finish and slick design are easy on the eye. What’s more, the brushed metal top and smooth matt black plastic are simple but eye-catching. Alongside this, the port layout is easy to understand, and each one is conveniently labelled. Additionally, the power output and display resolution can easily be read.

On top of this, security is a top priority for Monoprice. Subsequently, there are two locking locations to secure your device. You can use a modern Kensington or Standard Nano anti-locking device for peace of mind.

Is the Monoprice 15-in-1 Triple-Display MST Docking Station?

There are plenty of docking stations available to buy. However, the Monoprice 15-in-1 Triple-Display MST Docking Station leads the way. Thanks to its incredible technology and its plug-and-play approach, this is unbelievably easy to use. What’s more, it looks fantastic, and each port is well-labelled and straightforward to access. Furthermore, it is an incredible business tool that will streamline the way you operate. Accordingly, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here!

Review: Evil Wizard(Xbox)

Evil Wizard(Xbox) is a smutty and humour-filled affair that’ll drive you insane. Between the many belly laughs you’ll scream as you are killed for the nth time. However, the balanced gameplay and amusing characters mitigate the ball-breaking mechanics.

Developed by Rubber Duck Games and published by E-Home Entertainment Development Co, this is an action RPG. Moreover, it has Metroidvania elements and a story that sits in the gutter. Accordingly, it won’t be for everyone. However, if you like silly and often rude jokes, this will be right up your street.

Evil Wizard(Xbox) twists the narrative.

Rarely do we enjoy the villains’ viewpoint. Usually, we are programmed to destroy every nasty antagonist we encounter. Unusually, Evil Wizard(Xbox) successfully twists the narrative. As such, this weird approach was thoroughly enjoyable and something that took me by surprise.

You control the titular sorcerer who has been expelled from his gruesome castle. A heroic band of fighters has slayed his demonic followers and taken the castle for themselves. However, the Evil Wizard will not take this lying down and takes matters into his own hands. By exploring the many layers of his evil domain, this cruel protagonist will right the heroic wrongs.

The hero must flick the switches and light the 4 fires.
Flick the switches and light the fires.

Balanced mechanics.

Blending genres can be a tricky experience. Yet, Evil Wizard(Xbox) does it brilliantly. The excellent mechanics lead to a balanced time that is tricky but enjoyable. In the beginning, the wizard is restricted to a rusty sword. However, by exploring the castle, he’ll learn new spells and abilities. Furthermore, he’ll encounter some of his faithful companions that need to be saved.

This sounds pretty straightforward, but it isn’t. Thanks to the minor puzzle elements and the ever-expanding world, you have plenty of plates to keep turning. On top of this, each spell is created from a different element. As such, you’ll need specific magic to open different routes. However, this is not all! As you unlock new areas of the map, you’ll face special monsters and massive bosses. Consequently, there is plenty to understand and loads of elements to consider.

Bosses and monsters.

Your spells are a double-edged sword! Not only are they used to open new paths, but they are essential when killing your foes. With lightning, void, fire, ice, and earth, you’ll burn webs, freeze water, and activate switches. Yet, that is not all. Picking the right spell will undermine every monster you face. For example, you’ll want a fire spell against an icy creature. Alternatively, the lighting spell is perfect to stun large groups.

More importantly, though, is every boss fight. Each of these monstrous creatures has strengths and weaknesses. By selecting the right piece of magic, you’ll scythe down every opponent with ease. This was fantastic, as it added a layer of tactical nuance to the otherwise extremely silly gameplay.

The hero stands before a defaced statue.
Not the nicest of statues.

Side quests.

The core gameplay focuses on exploration, fighting, and getting your castle back. Thankfully, though, the developers have incorporated some enjoyable side quests to increase the depth. These amusing endeavours play with modern clichés and social media. Moreover, they run alongside the main quest line as well.

This was an excellent choice, as you can take on many of the additional quest lines with very little effort. Therefore, it doesn’t feel like a tedious add-on. Instead, the hilarious characters and whacky dialogue make the extra tasks enjoyable and worthwhile.

Evil Wizard(Xbox) is wonderfully pixelated.

Pixelated games are an indie developer’s dream. Consequently, Evil Wizard(Xbox) delivers a wonderfully retro and gory finish. Furthermore, the excellent character models, varied backdrop, and masses of blood are interesting and gruesome. Additionally, the spell animations are great and the combat is slick, enjoyable, and fast-paced.

The audio doesn’t fare so well, unfortunately. The annoying sound bites work for the opening 5 minutes or so. However, after that, they aren’t effective and the constant grunts are annoying. Luckily, though, the music and sound effects are much better. The creepy music and OTT noises work with the fantasy theme. Subsequently, had the developers tweaked the sound bites, the audio would be vastly improved.

The Evil Wizard(Xbox) shoots fireballs at his enemies.
Shoot that fireball and take down those monsters.

Who’d have thought a wizard would be so nimble?

This evil villain can’t half-move! He’s as nimble as a ninja and as quick as a sprinter. Moreover, he rolls like an Olympic gold medallist. Accordingly, every combat encounter is enjoyable and completing any task is simple. Thanks to the excellent UI and thorough tutorial, you’ll master the easy controls in no time.

Alongside the fighting and exploration elements, there are plenty of collectables to find. With hidden paths to discover, treasure chests to open, and wrapped ducks to find, there is plenty to keep you going. On top of this, the Metroidvania elements were fantastic. Consequently, there is plenty of replay value and longevity.

Evil Wizard(Xbox) is hilarious, smutty, and challenging to play.

Evil Wizard(Xbox) is a deceptive title that will push you all the way. The amusing dialogue, colourful characters, and modern clichés were great to experience. Furthermore, the incredible bosses were tough to defeat. Additionally, you must master each spell and understand your opponent’s weaknesses. Subsequently, this wasn’t easy, but when it clicked, the result was rewarding. As such, I loved it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you defeat the wholesome heroes? Rescue your friends, destroy your enemies, and get your castle back.

Review: Bittle X Open-source Bionic Robot Dog from Petoi

Here is our review of the Bittle X Open-source Bionic Robot Dog from Petoi.

Bittle has expanded its Bittle robot dog lineup with the introduction of Bittle X, a palm-sized, open-source programmable robot dog, designed for STEM and robotics education. More advanced than previous versions, the small but mighty Bittle X can respond to voice commands, performing over 35 predefined actions such as sit, play dead and backflip with high performance, lifelike movements. Bittle X’s dynamic maneuverability and behaviors are features typically seen on luxury robots, but Petoi’s technology is now making it accessible to everyone.

Bittle X users can choose from two different options based on their ability.  For those just starting out with STEM and younger users, a pre-assembled robot dog is ready for action.  The advanced users can select the kit option where they assemble its puzzle-like frame themselves and build the robot.

Bittle X operates on OpenCat, Petoi’s open-source quadrupled robot platform that offers endless programming and customization possibilities. Its bionic construction of legs rather than wheels means that it is able to move more freely over unstructured terrain.

Bittle X comes with 35+ built-in voice commands allowing users to interact with their robot pet as they would with a real dog. It responds quickly and in a lifelike way to voice commands such as scratch, dig, jump and high five. Users can also program an additional 10 voice commands if they want Bittle X to learn new tricks and play games.  Additionally, Bittle X can be easily configured and controlled using Petoi’s official mobile app or the included remote control.  Users can use the free Petoi Desktop App to design new robotics skills in a visual way.

Bittle X is the first robot powered by Petoi’s latest quadruped robot controller Biboard, a customized ESP32 board with larger programming space and faster CPU resulting in better performance.   BiBoard coordinates all instinctive and sophisticated movements. Users are able to attach various smart sensors to Bittle X to inject perception and artificial intelligence capabilities. The optional Petoi intelligent camera module and the newly released Petoi sensor pack, for example, enables Bittle X to recognize objects and patterns and sense of light, touch, gesture and movement, so users can program it to react and play games accordingly.

Perfect for STEM/coding beginners and those learning STEM at school, Bittle X comes with Petoi Coding Blocks, a Scratch-like, block-based programming environment for all ages. It also supports C++/Python programming for more advanced users such as software developers, IoT/robotics/AI application developers and researchers.  To empower educators, Petoi offers the introduction to quadruped robotics curricula for free.  They are available in block-based programming and C++ programming.

What’s in the box?

The box contains Bittle, a screwdriver, a small box of accessories including a remote control and an instruction card.

Final Thoughts

I’ve always wanted a robot dog ever since I first saw K-9 in Doctor Who, so now was my chance to get my hands on another one after having got to play with the original Bittle robot dog earlier this year.

I chose the pre-built kit this time so that we got jump straight into playing with Bittle (last time we built him which was fun but took a long time).

You also need to install some software on your computer in order to upload commands and firmware to Bittle. This is a fairly straightforward process but can take some time – follow all the instruction on the Petoi website as there aren’t any instructions in the box.

Then the fun really begins – you can program Bittle to do all sorts of things, the possibilities are endless. There is also a remote control you can use to control Bittle or an app on your smartphone. This is a really good opportunity to learn coding in a fun and fairly straightforward way.

You can of course just use the remote control to tell Bittle what to do, and thats fun too, but the real fun is coding your own movements and actions, it really is a good learning experience. Bittle can even respond to voice commands, which is new to this edition.

The battery, when fully charged lasts about an hour, so enough for some fun, although you might want to buy an additional battery if you don’t want the fun to stop.

The Bittle X is available from www.Petoi.com from £221 / $279 USD. Bittle X will also be available on Amazon UK from late July 2023.

You can learn more from the Bittle X page here.

Additionally, the datAshur PRO+C holds the distinction of being the world’s sole flash drive pending validation for FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certification.

The drive’s advanced security features provide complete data security and guarantees maximum protection of your data at all times. Built into the drive is a rechargeable battery, allowing the user to enter an 8 -15 digit PIN via the on-board keypad before connecting the device to a USB port. The datAshur PRO+C cannot be accessed without the user’s unique PIN, giving users peace of mind that their data is safe from prying eyes if their drive is lost or stolen, as without the PIN, there’s no way IN!

A Closer Look

Final Thoughts

The iStorage Datashur Pro+C Encrypted Flash Drive is small and very light – you can easily have it in your pocket or on a keyring and not really notice it. And the best thing if it gets lost is that without the PIN the contents of the drive are fully protected!

Once you have set a PIN all you need to do to use it is press the key button, put in your PIN and then plug in the drive to whatever device you want to use. When you are finished just unplug it and the drive is protected once more.

The drive itself is both water and dust resistant to protect it just that little bit more.

Speed wise, the drive will read at around 310 MB/s and will write at around 246 MB/s.

In order to be able to enter the PIN, the drive needs to have some charge – if the charge runs out, don’t worry, just plug it into a USB port and leave it for about 30-60 minutes to fully charge. You will have to do this the first time you use it too.

If you are using this in an office environment, you can set up both a user and an admin pin, so that if the user forgets their password the admin can always unlock it.

If you would want a highly protected and encrypted flash drive that is fast and durable, and easy to use, then take a closer look at the iStorage Datashur Pro+C Encrypted Flash Drive, you won’t be disappointed.

The iStorage Datashur Pro+C Encrypted Flash Drive is available now with prices starting at £99 for the 32 GB and going up to £249 for the 512 GB version.
