Review: Silly Polly Beast

Silly Polly Beast is an indie game that stands out from a sea of mundane and repetitive experiences. Furthermore, it has a pleasant old-school edge that reminded me of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Alone in the Dark. However, it has a nice modern edge that glues every element together to create a reasonably polished title.

This eerie and grim horror adventure was developed by Andrei Chernyshov and published by Top Hat Studios. It is a single-player game that uses a variety of perspectives to great effect. This artistic style adds flair and suspense. Additionally, it prevents the action from becoming predictable. It is this lack of predictability that leads to frustration, however. Not always knowing what you were to face and not being prepared for inevitable failure will make the average person scream with rage.

Silly Polly Beast sends you to hell and back.

I love an underdog story! Silly Polly Beast has this in abundance. A mute protagonist, a demonic being, and a missing friend make up the key ingredients for this sinister title. You play the role of Polly, an orphan who decides that her life will be better if she runs away. However, she is not doing this alone, as she wants to team up with her best friend Alice. Unfortunately, this plan failed as Alice failed to turn up. This leads Polly down a rabbit hole and on the road to purgatory. If she wishes to redeem herself and escape her dark fate, she must help a demon break his shackles. 

The story is ridiculous but fascinating. Each cruel element has some minor twists and turns as dialogue choices help to guide the plot. Though these decisions have a minimal impact, you occasionally make a deadly choice. Thankfully, this matters not as the quick save facility spawns you back in and you live to fight another day.

Exploration and deadly fog.

Silly Polly Beast is all about exploration, fighting, and a wall of deadly fog. The fog keeps you on a reasonably linear path. Moreover, circular routes and simple dungeons guide you to your next location. This may seem a little basic, but it works exceptionally well alongside the brutal combat elements.

As you explore each area, you must tackle countless creatures. Eerie shadows, grotesque exploding monsters, and wolves line up to take you down. This isn’t a problem for Polly as she is armed with a magical pistol. Whenever she moves near light, her pistol reloads. This gives the hero enough ammo to tackle most tasks. Yet, it isn’t quite that straightforward, sadly. Ammo is still relatively tough to find, as light is scarce and fires can be extinguished far too easily.

On top of this, the dodge mechanics are very tight, and the skateboard melee weapon is linked with Polly’s minuscule stamina bar. Accordingly, you have to plan wisely before you unleash a skateboard on a monster’s chops. Another challenge is the lack of special items. Grenades and healing items are limited. As such, you can be in a bit of a bind as you become inundated with hordes of foes.

A brilliant story, but plenty of bugs.

I’m a huge fan of how Silly Polly Beast unfolds. The plot is great, and the storytelling is wonderfully paced. Although I found much of the action to be tough and frustrating, it is very rewarding when you get things right. Additionally, a little practice goes an awfully long way.

Despite the agonisingly tough moments, it was the bugs that frustrated me the most. The game would hang and crash for no reason whatsoever. This was super annoying, especially when it reverted your gameplay to an earlier save point. This issue repeatedly reared its ugly head, driving me crazy! The problems need to be ironed out if this is to reach its full potential.

Silly Polly Beast has a stunning edge.

I’ve mentioned the old-school appeal. However, visually, Silly Polly Beast has a delightful modern edge. The action is wonderfully dark and sinister. Furthermore, the sharp, comic book imagery delivers a punchy and dramatic undertone that cannot be avoided. The combination of different perspectives and styles should have been confusing, but everything flows nicely. Consequently, this is an attractive and eye-catching game.

The audio helps to create a daunting and sinister atmosphere that is spine-tingling. A lack of spoken dialogue should have been off-putting, but it wasn’t. Instead, the silence creates a horrible energy that matches the demonic theme and sense of impending doom.

Tight but challenging controls.

There are plenty of weapons to master and some tight combat to enjoy. However, timing your dodging mechanic can be a little tough. When navigating the world is challenging, this can lead to frustration. Furthermore, avoiding waves of enemies is almost impossible. Subsequently, it enhances the difficulty to an eye-watering level.

Although this has a linear design, there is plenty of replay value and longevity. The difficulty ensures that you cannot rush through it. Moreover, numerous achievements require plenty of luck and an inquisitive mind. Therefore, completionists will need to invest hours if they wish to complete Silly Polly Beast.

Silly Polly Beast is an excellent indie game.

I found this to be particularly challenging to play. Additionally, the bugs added to the madness. Though it almost broke me, this is an excellent indie game. Aesthetically, it sets a sinister tone that cannot be ignored. Moreover, the story is outlandish yet fascinating. Accordingly, it is a must-play game, and I recommend buying it here! Can you break those chains and save your friend? Enter the underworld, avoid trouble, and become the hero you are destined to be!

Review: Xenopurge

Review: Xenopurge

Xenopurge doesn’t sell itself very well, in my view. Firstly, that title rather rebounded off my brain the first time I saw it. Sounds like a cleaning agent for when your pet alien widdles on the carpet. Secondly, I flinched when I saw the word ‘Auto-battler’. I’ve had bad experiences with that. It conjures up images of big flashy effects and listlessly moving between hordes of enemies. It’s just not my kind of genre. Xenopurge isn’t that at all.

Let me demonstrate what Xenopurge is with a quick story. I was on a mission to collect a package. My three squaddies were Morse, Hicks and Ripley. Ripley grabbed the package and made a break for the exit, with Hicks covering. Ripley evac’d and Hicks held ground with his rifle while Morse dashed for the exit. Except he never made it. He was blindsided by two aliens. Hicks tried to help, shooting from a distance, but was ordered to evac. Hicks was forced to escape to the sound of Morse being torn apart. So yes, this is an auto-battler, but it’s a special mutation.

The Perfect Organism

What’s remarkable about this Xenopurge story is that it’s almost exclusively told through little dots. The idea is that we’re a faceless, voiceless commander with their face pressed up against a computer screen. We order our soldiers in to secure packages, fight aliens or collect intel and then, if we’re lucky, get them out alive again. Save for blurry pictures of our soldiers’ faces, and a few panicked yells, we’re completely removed from the experience. All we see are dots. Picture the famous scene in Alien where they use the motion detector.

What’s more, our control over these soldiers is limited to a handful of generic commands. The basic mission structure is a fairly straightforward one. We start by picking where to deploy our squaddies, then we let them loose to explore the map. Each mission has a set objective, usually to collect something, with a secondary objective of escaping. We can issue generic commands, such as ordering members to group up or hold ground, but exploring and fighting is done solely by the AI. Hence the ‘auto-battler’ bit, I suppose. I actually really like this gameplay concept.

It works to create a rather magnificent amount of tension. The limited control means you can often see failure coming, but have no real way to deal with it. When a door opens and your blue dot is suddenly surrounded by red dots, with no help in sight, all you do is watch and despair. Enemies spawn in waves, with a big old counter on top, and the music ratchets up right as it gets close to zero. Watching your guys frantically run to the exit and realising, much too late, that they aren’t going to make it is a wonderful kind of horror.

Game Over, Man

Crucially though, you do still have some say in how Xenopurge’s battles go. You have to pick the best moment to escape or heal up, and when to group up your lads or keep them exploring. It also follows the set roguelike pattern of picking which missions to take, buying upgrades, changing unit logic, and recruiting more soldiers. There’s a decent amount of things to unlock too, from weapons to different squad loadouts. So your choices do have an effect, even if the grunt work is done by the AI. Doing well on missions earns you more coins too, and losing soldiers means paying the cost of printing more clones.

Oh yeah, all of our soldiers are clones. That feeds into the general storyline of humanity throwing everything at an unspecified race of aliens. Xenopurge keeps its story largely separate from the gameplay, though. The gist is that we’re in an old facility that was doing human testing, and there’s an alien artifact exhibiting strange behaviour. It’s mainly told through rambling emails and slightly unsettling first-person sections. It’s not a bad story, just awkwardly told and the ending gets bizarre in a way that feels out of place, and not really justified.

Still, the actual meat and potatoes of the gameplay is great. Not to say I don’t have gripes, however. Perhaps the biggest issue is that our limited agency means runs on the higher difficulties are incredibly dependent on luck. If we find our objective early, then we’re golden. But Xeno waves get harder as time goes on, so poor luck means an exponentially harder mission. I also feel like there was scope for more mission types. There’re only four types, with tough missions just incorporating multiple objectives. That makes runs feel a little samey, especially as the levels are quite cramped.

Xenopurge – Hands-off Tension

Lastly, I’m a little undecided on whether or not I’d like our squaddies to be more characterised. On the one hand, the cloning mechanic means we’re with the same people from start to finish. Even without characterisation, I was getting attached. Learning a bit more about them might help that element. On the other hand, there’s a definite push towards us being completely removed from proceedings. It’s a cold, hard existence for a clone and the story leans into that. So maybe greater characterisation would be counter to the message that Xenopurge wants to push.

Either way, I enjoyed my time with it. It’s heartening to see a genre that I’ve struggled with change itself around to be something appealing. Xenopurge is an auto-battler, after a fashion, but one that has an engaging core gameplay loop and uses it to create some truly palpable tension. There’s a lot to unlock, too, so you can go through plenty of runs with it. The story side wasn’t implemented perfectly, but you should never underestimate the thrill of seeing a group of red dots get closer and closer to a blue one.

With the unlikeliness of combining magic and guns, Arcane Trigger turns these two unlikely subjects into a fun auto-battler, roguelite. This game and its charming sprite-based visuals is an easy to digest roguelite to pick up and play. Runs don’t last very long and there are a variety of ways to build your characters. I’m here to give you a run down on how Arcane Trigger works and what to expect.

Gameplay Basics

Just like roguelites, every run will be vastly different based on the character and bullets you find. Each bullet is assigned an element and has their own unique effects. As mentioned prior, the game is an auto-battler, meaning you must prepare your bullets in a certain order. Every fight your bullets are randomized in terms of what position they’ll be in. Upon starting a fight, the bullets will fire from left to right at the enemy waves. Positioning your bullets will matter greatly based on the synergy of what bullets you have chosen. For example: Say you have a bullet that does more damage to enemies who are frozen. The bullet that you would use to freeze them is better off placed higher in the bullet order.

Understanding Bullets

Along with understanding the general flow of the game, it is also important to know that every bullet is assigned a specific element. The elements being Fire, Ice, Rock, Wind, Lightning, and Light. Of these six elements, certain characters that you chose before a run only have access to only four elements. The starting character, Magician Lilia, only has access to Fire, Ice, Rock, and Wind bullets. The next character you would unlock, Archmage Henry, only has access to Lightning, Wind, Rock, and Fire. There’s some overlap with the characters, but by doing so they each have their unique bullets to choose from. Even characters who share the same elements get unique bullets specific to them.

Upgrades

A common aspect of roguelites is that even if you may have lost all progression in a run, you are still rewarded by having means of improving later runs. After a run is finished, whether win or lose, you are rewarded with Magic Crystals. Magic Crystals can be spent on either Runes or Carpets. Runes are your permanent buffs throughout runs. They progressively get more and more expensive the further you go down the skill tree. These can range from higher chances in seeing rarer bullets in the shop to increases in resources. Carpets are the other upgrades you can spend your Magic Crystals on. Carpets are similar to the runes in that they get more expensive the more you buy and that they provide buffs for your runs. However, Carpets have to be equipped and you may only have one active at a time.

Conclusion

I would say I had a fun time playing through Arcane Trigger. The game is very easy to get into and runs generally don’t take very long. Although that sentiment changes based on what difficulty you’re on. There are a variety of ways to create builds via focusing on one element or splitting focus on two or more. The success of your runs will greatly depend on what bullets you choose and how you position them. Arcane Trigger is available on Steam for $8.99 USD.

Review: Gridz Keeper

I’m going to keep my Gridz Keeper review short and sweet. After all, I completed it in around an hour, and the core concept and puzzles were pretty rudimentary. However, I still had fun, and the basic problems scratched a methodical itch between levels 1 and 50.

This indie puzzle game was developed by Double Mizzlee and published by Eastasiasoft Limited. It is a single-player top-down experience where electricity is your friend. As you work through every problem, you’ll hear the groans of zombies. Yet, they never approach, nor is there a risk of being attacked. Instead, this is pretty casual from beginning to end.

Gridz Keeper demands you keep the juice flowing.

Zombies and apocalyptic settings are a tried and tested theme. However, I never tire of danger and brain munchers. Sadly, Gridz Keeper doesn’t really exploit this idea as the zombies are kept at arm’s length. This was disappointing as I’d have loved a bit of pressure as I was working through each problem.

The core idea is to light each pylon with a green light. First, you’ll notice a handful of pylons lit with a green or red light. As you click a pylon, the surrounding lights will change to red or green. Accordingly, you must work out a pattern to extinguish every red light and illuminate every green light. This wasn’t always easy, but a logical approach will get you over the finish line.

Gridz Keeper has an earthy appeal.

The repairman is armed with a wrench and nothing else. I know, pretty dangerous with zombies nearby. Thankfully, every pylon field is surrounded by a wire fence. This basic arena allows gamers to focus on the puzzles and little else. There is a combination of earthy colours and basic character models. However, it is the puzzles that grab your attention, and you quickly forget about everything else.

The audio is strangely upbeat and sinister. The groans of zombies combine with a bass-heavy soundtrack. Consequently, there is a sense of danger as you complete every puzzle. Had the developer incorporated a timer and more trepidation, Gridz Keeper would have been much improved.

Simple controls.

This is a cinch to play. Move the wrench, touch the pylons, and watch the colours change. This is the complex nature of the control system, and anyone can master it. As this has no pressure, you can work through each problem without fear of failure.

Disappointingly, a lack of depth prevents replay value and longevity. Subsequently, this is likely to appeal to completionists and anyone who wants a quick and casual puzzle experience. Although I seem negative, I was left wanting as I expected more puzzles and a greater challenge.

Gridz Keeper could have been better.

Gridz Keeper isn’t going to blow anyone away. Yes, the puzzles are fun, and there are moments where you’ll scratch your head. However, it is pretty easy, and the core mechanics lack depth. Additionally, the zombie apocalypse is a bit of a damp squib. Therefore, there is no fear and certainly no pressure. Accordingly, I’m not going to recommend this unless you want an easy completion. More information can be found here, though! Can you keep the lights on? Study the grid, flick the switches, and hope everything turns green.

Review: Master Detective Archives: Rain Code Plus

A year after its Nintendo Switch release, Master Detective Archives launches on PS5 with a new upgraded and enhanced version, entitled Rain Code Plus! Is this definitive version worth your time? Or should it have stayed confined to the Switch?

Taking A Chance

Developers Spike Chunsoft have garnered worldwide recognition for their work on the superb Danganronpa series. The series has become acclaimed for its visual novel style and hilarious and twisted writing. So it would have been perfectly understandable for the development team to focus solely on that franchise and stay in their lane. Thankfully, these developers decided to take a chance and succeeded with the excellent Master Detective Archives and now it can finally reach more players with the release of this remastered version Rain Code Plus.

Much like Danganronpa, Master Detective is a visual novel styled experience that puts you in the shoes of protagonist Yuma Kokohead, a naïve young detective. The story begins superbly with Yuma waking up on a train platform, dazed and confused, with nothing but a letter addressed to him informing him he is a part of secret society of superpowered detectives, along with a train ticket to the game’s main location, the mysterious and daunting city of Kanai Ward. Whilst travelling on the train, the game sets up the stakes for Yuma by informing both him and the player that he in fact gave up his memories to a Death God named Shinigami in exchange for her powers and guidance. With no idea why he decided to agree to this exchange, Yuma is forced to go along to the city with Shinigami to find the answers to his questions whilst discovering the seedy underside of Kanai Ward.

This story is no means groundbreaking in its themes and narrative but it succeeds in large part thanks to the wonderful dynamic of the two main characters. Yuma and Shinigami’s ever evolving relationship across the course of the 30 hour story is fascinating and engrossing. The story is at its best when these two characters are learning how to coexist with one another, dealing with the aches and pains that go along with that. It can be cheesy at times but the voice acting is absolutely superb and really makes these characters come to life. The supporting cast also leaves a lasting impression with very minor characters even having great one liners! It can truly feel like you have been thrust into an epic anime saga at times with its great cinematics and visual style. Add in all the additional DLC and you have a hefty amount of content awaiting you. A thought provoking, engaging and mysterious story that is propelled by its two main leads and their thoroughly contrasting personalities.

An Appetite For Exploration

Gameplay in Master Detective Archives: Rain Code Plus is a real mixed bag and the additions this updated version brings do little to change that. This game is at its best when you are exploring the streets and environments of Kanai Ward. Searching for clues, hints or any points of interest is so addictive. Once enough clues are found, Yuma will be thrown into fights, thanks to Shinigami. These turn based fights are solid but don’t really catch the eye and feel quite repetitive by game’s end. Alongside the exploration and combat are minigames which are spliced in throughout the game in hopes of keeping the game feeling fresh. Whilst some of these minigames are fun and innovative, others are downright awful and are so gimmicky and luck based it will infuriate you.

Nothing in this new remastered version has been updated or modified when it comes to gameplay. There are no new quality of life updates like a difficulty option or combat modifiers. The only real addition, bar the DLC content, is a gallery mode which allows you to rewatch the game’s cutscenes. Once again, I feel like a broken record bemoaning how a so called definitive version of the game is packaged with no new real eye catching content to grab returning players’ attention. I can forgive this remaster to a certain extent as it is coming to new consoles and attempting to capture the attention of the player base on those systems, but for Switch players it is really disappointing.

A Visual Tour De Force, A Musical Disappointment

I wanted to love the visual presentation when I first saw the announcement trailer. Thankfully, the game delivered -and then some! The environmental design and graphics in this game are nothing short of spectacular; every location is dripping with vast amounts of detail and bursting with colour and it’s astounding. The blending of different art styles is something to behold. Add in newly updated 4K visuals and improved fidelity, and you have one gorgeous stylish game. Every character looks particularly impressive, with small beautiful details added to each outfit, making every one of the cast stand out. This is a beautifully rendered game that delivers a jaw dropping anime style. Bravo!

Similarly, the audio design is top notch, propelled by a powerful performance from the voice cast, in particular Anjali Kunapaneni as Shinigami. These performances bring the characters to life and leave such a lasting impression. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the game’s musical score, which is a profound failure. The score composed by Masafumi Takada is boring, repetitive and bland as it tries to weave varying musical genres together but it never achieves its goal. Musical scores are meant to propel the narrative forward but unfortunately this does nothing to help craft more emotion into the story.

Verdict

If you are buying Master Detective Archives: Rain Code Plus for the first time you will find a great compelling story full of mystery, intrigue and superb characters. Great visuals, beautiful art style and stunning voice acting make this game a truly must play game. However, gameplay remains a true mixed bag, making it a shame for returning players that there is not enough new content or quality of life improvements to really warrant returning to this game.

I reviewed Avatar Frontiers of Pandora around 2 years ago and scored it a 9/10. My conclusion was as follows: “Though the almost overwhelming open world is tough to swallow, exploring quickly becomes enjoyable. Whether you are completing minor tasks or wasting time, there is always something new to discover and plenty of things to see and do. Moreover, playing this with a friend adds a layer of depth that changes the dynamic further. As such, I adore this game, and I recommend that you buy it.”

Roll on 24 months, and I’ve got my hands on the latest DLC. Avatar Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes is an impressive addition to a massive base game. Additionally, it adds some interesting mechanics and a dark and sinister plot.

This open-world adventure was developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft. It combines first-person and third-person gameplay to great effect. There are stealth elements, plenty of combat, and a wonderful sense of freedom. As such, it captures the Avatar franchise perfectly.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes is darker and tougher to swallow. 

This Standalone DLC introduces a new clan and main character. You play the role of So’lek. This warrior is battle-hardened, but his new quest is divisive. The world is broken because of a new clan. His family has scattered, and he must face harsh realities as he saves the day.

The plot and setting feel in keeping with the latest Avatar experience. Accordingly, gamers will lose themselves in a turbulent world that is filled with testing moments and heart-stopping combat. 

The improvements. 

I didn’t find much wrong with the original game. However, others complained about the lack of refinement, progression elements, and combat. Thankfully, those elements have been improved for this DLC.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes delivers a more rounded story pace and progression system. This keeps you interested without a sense of drag or unwanted moments. Alongside this, the third-person perspective is a welcome addition. Although I didn’t mind the original approach, the world feels bigger, and it is easier to navigate.

The combat utilises more kinetic movement alongside the traditional stealth and weakness mechanics. When combined with the protagonist’s special abilities, the fighting elements feel more fluid and easier to digest. 

I love these improvements, but it is the storytelling that excels. The world is a glorious mess that is sombre, tough, and bittersweet. Working through the quests delivers many interesting moments that spark the game into life. 

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes looks amazing!

I adored the base game, and Avatar Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes takes it to the next level. In short, it is stunning. The open world is massive and a pleasure to explore. The use of vibrant and alien colours was a joy, and the 3D nature of each adventure was incredible!

The audio brings Hollywood to the small screen. A breathtaking soundtrack combines with intelligent sound effects and amazing ambient noises. The result is a dreamy out-of-this-world soundscape that isn’t easily forgotten. 

A joy to play. 

I love this genre, and the developer has made it a pleasant experience. The control system is responsive and well laid out. Moreover, the UI is intuitive and great to navigate. As such, you’ll adore running, swinging, climbing, and fighting. 

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes is a standalone game with a host of new achievements. Moreover, there are loads of collectables to find and plenty to keep you entertained. Consequently, you’ll invest 30+ hours to find everything.

I could heap praise on this DLC forever. Avatar Frontiers of Pandora – From the Ashes is nearly perfect, and my complaints are borderline petulant. As an adult with limited time, it was almost too big and too overwhelming. This could put people off, and that would be a shame.

If you can put this concern to one side, you’ll experience a cinematic game that’ll blow you away. Aesthetically, this is how a game should be created. Furthermore, it has an amazing story, and it is a joy to play. Accordingly, it is a must-have, and I recommend buying it here! Can you bring your clan together? Explore the dark world, complete every quest, and do what’s right.

If you want a maximum 80W output device that is capable of charging phones, earbuds, watches, laptops, and tablets, then this is the device for you. It has a hidden charging platform and a dedicated position for your earbuds. Moreover, the main wireless dock can be tilted for easier viewing. Alongside this, there is a retractable USB-C cable, and USB-C port and a USB-A port. Consequently, it is a versatile and stylish device.

What’s in the box of the Z9 6-in-1 Wireless charger?

  • The packaging is simple but effective. I like the sharp colours and the robust design.

Technical aspects.

The Z9 6-in-1 Wireless charger offers an array of singular charging or multi-charging options. The maximum combined output is 80W. However, if you wish to charge one item, you can use the USB-C port and enjoy 65W of charging power. This is enough for laptops, tablets, and handheld gaming machines. Furthermore, it’ll charge your phone with ease.

Alternatively, if you wish to charge a few items at once, there are different permutations you must consider. The wireless phone platform offers a maximum of 15W. Whereas the watch can be charged with 2.5W, and TWS earbuds enjoy a maximum 5W output. Now, this may seem low, but if you need to charge 3 items overnight, this is perfect. However, if you need to charge just one device, the impressive 65W output is more than enough.

I spent much of my time using the 60W retractable USB-C cable. This cable is long enough to comfortably use the charging facility whilst in bed. Additionally, it is the perfect option if your phone or tablet isn’t compatible with wireless charging technology.

Build quality.

I’ve tried and tested many GaN charges. Each of them has impressive build quality. Luckily, the Z9 6-in-1 Wireless charger is no different. This device is sturdy and remarkably heavy. Moreover, the moving parts are durable and easy to handle. The tilting charging station has a strong hinge and smooth and reliable movement. If you wish to charge a watch, you can do so from the hidden platform. This was an interesting design choice that works exceptionally well. The USB-C cable requires full extension before it will retract. This was a little strange, but it took no time to get familiar with its quirks.

The gunmetal grey has a professional and clean appearance. Furthermore, it can be cleaned with ease. The USB ports are well-positioned, and connecting multiple devices was a breeze. Finally, the power cable isn’t hard-wired into the charger. This was a great choice, as you can replace the cable if it gets damaged.

Is the Z9 6-in-1 Wireless charger worth it?

A GaN charger is a bit of a dry topic. However, I love the Z9 6-in-1 Wireless charger. This professional, powerful, and easy-to-use device is a space and time-saving option. Additionally, it looks great, and the quirky design choices were impressive. Accordingly, if you need a charging solution, I recommend buying it here!

Simon the Sorcerer Origins is the prequel to the much-loved point-and-click title. This sarcasm-filled adventure is a nostalgic romp that takes in many of the fantastic core mechanics. Furthermore, it is voiced by Chris Barrie. Accordingly, you’ll enjoy classic British humour with a Sahara desert level of dryness.

This retro point-and-click adventure was developed by Smallthing Studios and published by ININ Games. It is a single-player 2D experience that captures the essence, action, and humour of the original. Moreover, there is a brilliant charm that never gets old. Consequently, if you love this genre and games like Day of the Tentacle, Broken Sword, or Discworld, this will be right up your street.

Simon the Sorcerer Origins tells a wicked tale.

I am old enough to remember the original. However, no prior knowledge is required to enjoy this prequel. Instead, gamers will love the silly comments, the snide remarks, and the incredible puzzles. Additionally, the weird settings, unusual characters, and clever plot twists will keep you entertained throughout.

You control Simon the Sorcerer. He is a witty but obnoxious lad who thinks he knows best. His personality annoys and amuses many of his fellow protagonists. As such, he can be a divisive character. However, despite his flaws, he will make you laugh as he is drawn into a foreign world by an ancient prophecy. Here, he meets powerful, but useless wizards, and a whole host of weird and wonderful creatures. By the end of your journey, you’ll understand who Simon is and his origins.

Familiar mechanics.

For all of its funny storytelling, Simon the Sorcerer Origins utilises many familiar and old-school mechanics. Point and click games rely on hidden objects, strange moments, and an array of simple and complex puzzles. Thankfully, this title has them all. As you explore each location, you must search for clues and piece together random items. Additionally, this wouldn’t be a game about a sorcerer if there weren’t magic involved.

The gameplay is fairly balanced, and although some of the puzzles were challenging, I think the developer got things just right. Finding the correct tool for each moment keeps you thinking, and the witty conversations help to point you in the right direction. Moreover, a little bit of luck pushes you towards the end goal. This mixture of clues, methodical thinking, and trial and error has a delightful retro edge that was appealing.

Simon the Sorcerer Origins looks fantastic.

Gamers are offered the chance to play this with a modern filter or old-school blur. I flitted between both, as you can alter the settings on the fly. If you go for the modern vibe, you’ll enjoy clean lines, vibrant colours, and interesting stage design. Alternatively, if you opt for a retro filter, you’ll witness a delightful lack of clarity that’ll take you back to the 90s. Either way, Simon the Sorcerer Origins looks fantastic.

The audio was a treat! The music and sound effects were silly, mindless, and reminiscent of the original. However, it is the incredible acting from Barrie that sets this apart. His delivery and dry English ways make this the game it is. I chuckled throughout as it is silly, loud, and remarkably British in its ways.

Brilliant controls.

The point-and-click genre is better with a mouse and keyboard. Therefore, I expected this to be awful. Thankfully, I was wrong, as it was a cinch to play with my gamepad. The opening moments work as a tutorial, and after this, gamers will master the responsive and well-considered controls in no time at all.

Replay value is up for debate. If you love the genre, witty ways, and silly nature of the beast, you’ll return to play it again. However, if you enjoy testing your grey matter and fresh material, I can’t see the value in returning for more. Luckily, it is affordable, and this makes it great value for money.

Simon the Sorcerer Origins is a brilliant game.

I laughed from beginning to end as I witnessed an array of odd moments. This will appeal to older gamers, but younger players will love the English charm, silly characters, and clever puzzles. Additionally, you can enjoy the madness with no prior knowledge. Accordingly, it is amazing, and I recommend buying it here! Can you understand Simon’s origins? Master your spells, explore each strange location, and solve every puzzle you face.

Review: Taxi Chaos 2

This review of Taxi Chaos 2 was supposed to be a nostalgic joyride. Instead, it became a reminder that not every memory from the arcade era survives the journey into the modern market intact. I wanted this to be a love letter to reckless turns, near-miss collisions, and the pure chaos of clock-based driving. 

What I got instead was something far more restrained, far more limited, and ultimately far less memorable than it desperately wants to be.

Developed by Team6 Game Studios and published by Lion Castle, Taxi Chaos wears its inspiration on its sleeve. You don’t need to squint to see the shadow of Crazy Taxi looming over every design choice. 

From the open city layout to the race-against-the-clock structure, this is very clearly a spiritual successor. The question is whether that spirit still has any fuel left in the tank.

A Familiar Fare

On paper, Taxi Chaos sounds perfect. Choose between two drivers (Vinny or Cleo), hop into a cab, pick up passengers, and deliver them as fast as possible before the timer hits zero. 

Drive recklessly, chain fares, earn tips, repeat. It’s a formula that worked brilliantly in arcades and on consoles at the turn of the millennium, largely thanks to Sega understanding exactly what made that loop addictive.

Taxi Chaos sticks closely to that blueprint, perhaps too closely. Vinny and Cleo are largely cosmetic choices, differing only in visual style and some light dialogue. Passengers chatter, crack jokes, and react to your driving, which adds a little personality, but it’s surface-level charm rather than anything substantial.

The real variation comes from the vehicles. There are seven cars in total, most of them locked at the start. Unlocking new rides requires hitting milestones, driving certain distances, earning high star ratings, and completing challenges. 

Each car has distinct stats, and those differences do meaningfully affect how the game feels. Unfortunately, none of them ever quite capture the loose, wild handling that made Crazy Taxi so exhilarating.

Chaos Without the Spark

At its core, Taxi Chaos plays exactly how you expect. Pick up a fare. Follow the arrow. Drive like traffic laws are a suggestion, not a rule. Longer trips pay better, faster deliveries earn bonuses, and the game ends when time runs out. There’s no campaign, no progression beyond unlocking cars, and no real endgame beyond chasing a higher score on the leaderboards.

And that’s where the cracks start to show.

What worked in 1999 doesn’t automatically work now. Arcade design thrived on brevity because it was built to eat coins. Home releases expanded on that with extra modes, challenges, and content to justify the purchase. Taxi Chaos doesn’t do that. You get one city. One core loop. No meaningful side activities to break things up.

Yes, there are three modes (Arcade, Pro (which removes navigation arrows), and Free Roam), but they’re variations on the same idea, not genuinely new experiences. Free Roam helps you learn the map, which is useful because Pro mode without navigation quickly becomes an exercise in frustration rather than skill.

The Final Boon of Unboxathon

Taxi Chaos is a sincere attempt to revive a beloved arcade formula, but sincerity alone doesn’t make a great game. It captures the look of its inspiration but misses the urgency, variety, and depth that made that inspiration timeless. With more modes, more cities, and a better sense of progression, this could have been something special.

As it stands, Taxi Chaos is a reminder that homage requires evolution. Without it, you’re not reviving a classic; you’re just reminding players how good the original still is. 

Most importantly, Unboxathon has heart. It doesn’t revolutionise the genre, but it refines it to such a degree that innovation almost feels unnecessary. Every system serves a purpose. Every mechanic respects the player’s time.

This is the kind of game that sneaks up on you over hours, not minutes. One where progress feels earned, discoveries feel meaningful, and time spent never feels wasted. And that’s where its true strength lies.

For fans of idle games, clickers, or quiet, story-driven experiences, this is essential. For sceptics of the genre, this might be the game that finally makes it click.
