Control 4 PC’s with 1 Mouse and Keyboard with Microsoft’s Mouse Without Borders Software

2

A few days ago Microsoft opened their Garage and let out some software that enables you to control up to 4 PC’s from a single mouse and keyboard. Its called Mouse Without Borders and it’s very cool!

4403.mousewithout_lg_thumb_68331A64

Here is what Microsoft said:

I’ve mentioned The Garage a number of times here on Next and Jay Greene also wrote a story recently about some Garage projects recently for Cnet.

Today it gives me great pleasure to announce a free download resulting from a Garage project. To recap quickly, The Garage is both a physical space in Building 4 at our Redmond HQ, and a company wide program that encourages grass roots invention, tinkering, ideas and incubation of projects. In The Garage, employees get together after hours to build whatever they dream up and the results are often impressive. 99.9% of the Garage projects either ship as part of a Microsoft project or remain internal, but every once in a while there’s a project that doesn’t fit into any existing Microsoft product which will get a lot of request from employees who want to be able to share it with their friends and families.  In exceptions like this, the Garage community will rally together to and publish it as a standalone public download.

Mouse Without Borders is a project I’ve been familiar with for the last 6 months or so and it’s a wonderfully useful tool. In a nutshell, it allows you to reach across your PC’s as if they were part of one single desktop. I have two PCs on my desk at work connected to 3 LCD screens and using Mouse Without Borders I can move my mouse between the 3 screens, even though one of them is attached to a different PC from the other two. What’s more, I can move files between the 2 computers simply by dragging them from one desktop to another. In fact you can control up to four computers from a single mouse and keyboard with no extra hardware needed – it’s all software magic, developed by Truong Do who by day is a developed for Microsoft Dynamics. The software is easy to setup and in addition to enabling drag and drop of files, you can lock or log in to all PCs from one PC, and as a whimsical bonus is it allows you to customize your Windows logo screen with the daily image from Bing or a local collection of pictures 🙂 I regularly use it to have one PC dedicated to social media streams while I work away on my other PC connected to two screens.

The video above both explains and shows Mouse Without Borders far better than I can using words. The project is testament to the power of The Garage which helped Truong develop the user interface and setup the usability tests that have helped the tool become very accessible and easy to use. As well as that, The Garage and its regular Science Fairs inside Microsoft helped expose the project to 9,000 people before it was ready for external release. Now that day has arrived and I’m delighted to announce here on Next at Microsoft that Mouse Without Borders is ready for download.

I look forward to playing with this software when I get a chance – it looks very useful to me!

AT&T Announces New Windows Phone 7.5 Mango Lineup

1

It was only a little over a week ago that HTC announced two new Windows Phone 7.5 devices and now AT&T have announced their new phone lineup.

HTC TITAN - front right - Carbon Grey

Here is what was posted on the Windows Phone Blog today:

Hey everyone. This morning AT&T took the wraps off their expanded phone lineup that will feature the next release of Windows Phone, code-named Mango. They also announced they will be among the first carriers to start updating existing AT&T Windows Phones with the Mango release this fall.

AT&T said they will carry three brand new Windows Phones this year including the HTC TITAN, the Samsung Focus™ S and the Samsung Focus™ Flash.

The HTC TITAN was unveiled to the world last week as a global phone and we are excited to share that that an exclusive version of this device will make its way to the U.S. at AT&T. If you missed the post on the TITAN last week go check it out. It features a giant 4.7-inch display which makes movies, music and gaming incredible. It also includes front and rear facing cameras for video chats with friends and family. The AT&T version will be unique, but we’ll have to keep you in suspense for a while longer on what it looks like and final specs.

The Samsung Focus™ S takes the success of the original Focus to the next level with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.4 GHz processor, 4G speeds and a super thin profile. It also includes front and rear facing cameras to capture a moment or connect with friends.

The third phone in the lineup is the Samsung Focus™ Flash. The Focus Flash is a great pocket phone with a 3.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, but still packs a speedy 1.4 GHz processor. This phone is great for people looking for a high performance phone at a value packed price.

Look for more information on these great phones in the near future as we march to launch!

Having had a hands-on with Windows Phone 7.5 I have to say I really like it. Who knows, it might be time for me to swap my iPhone 4 for something Windows again!

DVBLink v4 Suite Now at Release Candidate Status

Following quite a short beta, the DVBLink v4 product suite is now at Release Candidate status!

dvb_thumb1

The DVBLink v4 products get Release Candidate status! Now including DVBLink Connect! Server.

The life of DVBLink Home Server was colorful but short lived. After careful consideration we have decided to scrap DVBLink Home Server and include its functionality into DVBLink Connect! Server.

What is new and fixed since beta2:

General:
– Fixed: Teletext and subtitles in MediaCenter
– Fixed: Unstable (sometimes hanging) DVBLink configuration webpage
– Added: Authentication mechanism for web configuration access (defaults are user/admin)
– Fixed: PC wit Medaicenter running DVBLink does not go to sleep (powercfg reporting ehrecvr running)
– Added: Smart channel mapping
– Added: Channel (sub)name search in channel tree
– Added: MC Guide Services is a normal EPG source now (see notes for special import instructions for MC Guide Services EPG mapping)

DVBLink TVSource:
– Added: Device properties dialog
– Added: Import settings from other tuner

DVBLink for IPTV:
– Playlist retrieval from http
– Automatic channel mapping for DVBLink for IPTV

DVBLink Connect! Server:
– Fixed: Playready message appearing on a network clients when they wake up from standby

How to install
There is no update possible for those who have installed beta1 or beta2. You must uninstall everything and install new version from the scratch. Please do backup of your configuration before uninstalling so that you can restore it later. Also think about the contents of your plugins and xmltv folders.
There is no need to delete Mediacenter database. Just re-do TV Setup after DVBLink installation.

Notes:
– all 8 DVBLink Tuners must be configured during TV Setup phase in MediaCenter (even if you have only one physical tuner/source)
– DVBLink Configuration web page is compatible with the following Browsers: IE9, Mozilla, Chrome, Opera. Please note that IE8 is not (and will not be) supported.
– DVBLink Connect! Server does not include own recorder yet (more info – in a separate topic)
– DVBLink Connect! Server does not have Web interface for live TV / EPG management. It will be included in v 4.1.
– DVBLink Connect! Server includes support for Android, WinPhone and IPhone/IPad apps. Availability of apps is different for each platform. more information is available in a separate topic.
– Versions of all binaries should be 4.0.0.2

MC Guide Services import instructions

Since MC Guide Services has become a separate source now, its EPG channel mapping will not be imported automatically during restore operation. There are several (easy) manual steps that have to be done:
– Add MC Guide Services EPG source in DVBLink web configuration interface
– Stop dvblink server Windows service
– open dvblink_configuration.xml in a text editor
– under <sources> tag find your newly added MC Guide Services EPG source and note its guid – e.g. a big string between <guid></guid> tags
– open dvblink_channel_storage.xml in text editor and replace all occurrences of 41B6878B-AA9C-48D0-B0FF-E1AE48776D64 with the guid of your new MCV Guide Services source
– save dvblink_channel_storage.xml and close a text editor
– start dvblink server Windows service

If these instructions feel like too complex to do – just add a new MC Guide Services EPG source and re-map your channels on the EPG Sources tab of DVBLInk web configuration interface.

StableBit DrivePool Moves to Beta M3 Build 3808

There has been another beta build from CoveCube! StableBit development marches on – now is build 3808.

600px-Stablebit_drivepool_screen_thu16

Here is how CoveCube describes this application:

  • Combine all your hard drives into one big storage pool (except the system drive with the OS).
  • Add and remove drives from the pool at any time without re-partitioning or manually moving folders.
  • Create duplicated folders on the storage drive pool that are protected against single drive failure. If a drive fails on which a duplicated file was stored, the contents of that file will remain readable even without the drive.
  • All your data is stored in standard NTFS files. You can always access your files even if the Windows Home Server completely crashes or this add-in can’t be used.

This version’s change log:

1.0.0.3808
———-
* DrivePool doesn’t manage WHS backup service on startup anymore, Widows will do that.
* Added backup service dependency on DrivePool. Removed on uninstall.
* Fixed errors when Guest permissions are not set correctly on the root directories of drives in the pool.
* Wrapped the BETA M2 migration code with error reporting actions.

V-MODA Unveils Limited Edition True Blood MAKER Zinc Metal Headphones

0

V-MODA have launched another True Blood set of headphones – this time the MAKER Zinc Metal Headphones.

TB

Here is what they say:

Progeny of the Award Winning Vibrato, MAKER turns BLISS 3.0 and rare materials into Supernatural Sound and Immortal Durability

Los Angeles – September 8, 2011 – V-MODA, the oldest and original maker of high-quality lifestyle headphones, announces the launch of True Blood® MAKER, a limited edition Zinc Metal in-ear headphone developed in partnership with HBO®  for its wildly original, Emmy®- and Golden Globe®-winning series.

The True Blood MAKER headphones feature minimal, yet elegant nuances – from the black Zinc Metal coffin pendant to the blood red transparent jewel – make for a rare combination of solid sophistication and sinister styling. The 400 limited edition headphones are individually numbered and a perfect collector’s item for those whose lives begin at night.

The headphones are available for purchase for a limited time for an MSRP of $150 at V-MODA.com, the HBO online store at http://www.store.hbo.com, and the HBO Shop® located at 42nd St. & 6th Ave. in New York City.

“V-MODA is the original maker of the modern headphone industry and through the years has turned nearly 3 million high-end headphones.  Like an older vampire who is stronger and has gained more powers over the years, V-MODA has amassed unique experiences in fusing rare materials, quality, ergonomics, sound and durability,” said Val Kolton.

Masterfully crafted and re-engineered utilizing patented die-casting metal processes and Kevlar-reinforced fabric cables, MAKER is destined to be a museum-quality masterpiece.  Its unique geometric design, usually only seen on fine relics or watches, adds an element of timeless elegance.  The exclusivity is a triumph to over seven years of R&D in ergonomics and precision metals founded upon a philosophy to break away from the circular designs many other headphones are spellbound by with traditional plastics and regular “turned” aluminum.

“V-MODA’s materialEDGE is a combination of industrial-age materials, advanced ergonomics and professional-grade acoustics bespoke for beings with supernatural senses.  The materials are those the immortals would cherish,” added Kolton.

MAKER’s critically acclaimed sound delivers vibrant bass, vivid mid-range and vivacious highs, and was tuned alongside legendary producers, musicians and DJs across the world.  The sound experience is a balance of its high-fidelity 8mm V-MASQUE drivers for consistency and its BLISS 3.0 fittings that transform the sound. V-MODA discovered that “the fit is the sound,” so perfect sound requires shape shifting the fit to the individual ear and speaker driver.  MAKER’s revolutionary BLISS 3.0 fittings, also a result of years of R&D, resulted in a patent-pending conical shape and hybrid-silicone that creates greater comfort, sound and stability for the masses, even for those with “tiny ear syndrome”.

MAKER features:

•    Zinc Metal die casting for a unique shape, feel, durability with minimal acoustic resonance(Patented)

•    ACTIVE FLEX detachable sport ear hooks for a secure fit for gym, running and sport use(Patent-Pending)

•    REVAMPED BLISS 3.0 (Bass Level Isolating Soft Silicone) hybrid silicone fittings reduce outside noise and enhance stability, sound and comfort.  Includes four pairs of black silicone fittings (XS, S, M, L) (Patent-Pending)

•    One-button microphone universally compatible with all iPhone®, Android™, Windows, iPad®, iPod®, Blackberry™, tablets, notebooks, audio devices and smartphones with a 3.5mm port

•    Two-year V-MODA premier warranty

•    Immortal Life Replacement Program – 50 percent off lifetime discount to replace consumer-damaged headphones

•    Italian-designed Carrying pouch

Apple Release New Security Update

Today Apple released a new security update for OS X.

Screen Shot 2011-09-09 at 20.16.31

Here is what is included in the update:

Security Update 2011-005 is recommended for all users and improves the security of Mac OS X.

As with any security update, you should consider installing it as soon as possible.

Microsoft Removes AVG Windows Phone 7 App from Marketplace

A few days ago we told you about an anti-virus application for Windows Phone 7 from AVG. Now Microsoft have removed it from their Marketplace following complaints from Windows Phone 7 users.

Screen-Shot-2011-09-08-at-00.22.04

AVG appears to collect the phone make, model, a users email address and their location – AVG claim its all part of an exceptional security service.

Either way, Microsoft have pulled it and are investigated further!

This is what AVG have said:

Over the past few days, questions have been asked about AVG’s most recent mobile security product, AVG Mobilation™for Windows Phone 7.  As such, I wanted to take a moment to clarify and respond to some of the questions and comments raised in social media forums.

As soon as this product hit the market place, developers across the globe began to ask questions.  We welcome those questions as the community has a strong influence on our product designs.

Firstly, there have been questions about the features and functions of the product with some commentators feeling it is a bit light on features.

When a company designs tools to support a new product in market, there is always room for growth. Criticism and comment is natural when a product enters a new market at the early stages.

That said, we moved forward because we firmly believe a product that begins the process of securing Windows Phone 7 mobile devices is a step in the right direction.  We made this decision based on our key findings from our very successful security software for the Android mobile platform.

Three years ago, we were first to market with a security solution for Android®.  At the time, the number of threats against the Android OS was very small.

We knew however that, like the PC market, as Android grew in popularity so would the threats against the platform.

Today our security software scans 594,892,025 SMS’s a month, finding 783,963 of them as bad/spam, we also scan over 157 million App packages a month and find 225,034 are infected with malware.

AVG believes that the Windows Phone 7 OS will continue to increase in popularity and, as it does, it will become a high value target for thieves and hackers.

For this reason, we made a strategic decision to deliver a security product to this platform in its very early days – as we did with Android.  Our objective is to start Windows mobile users off on the right foot and help them create a safe and secure community.

Over time, AVG will continue to develop our product’s capabilities and believe that our user base will benefit from the investments we make in product improvement.

We worked closely with Microsoft on the development of this product.  Our teams were trained by Microsoft and our software was provided to the company for review and certification prior to release. We did implement a number of requested changes provided to us by Microsoft.

Some of the current key features of our Windows Phone 7 security software include the utilization of several protection engines for both Web security and file security.

The Safe Web Surfing function helps protect users from social engineering attacks that are intended to drive them to take wrong decisions while online.

This protection engine checks the safety of a URL in case the user tries to access a malicious web site.

The Safe Search function allows users searching the web to avoid malicious web sites.

Our file scanning engine scans media files, mp3s, video and play lists and checks against a blacklist of bad files. This is a result of several “proof of concepts” disclosed in public.

Having the security engines implemented in the product, we believe we can respond to security threats targeting the Windows Phone 7 platform to protect our users, whenever such threats arrive –as we have with Android — and we are committed to continuing to develop this security product to reflect the constantly changing threat landscape.

When we develop security software, your privacy is our most important policy. Our data privacy policy is what we live up to, it is public and it is serious. Our privacy policy for Windows Phone 7 is available at http://www.droidsecurity.com/privacywin.html.

All of the data we collect is used solely to offer users an exceptional security service with state-of-the-art GPS tracking.

We will not sell your data to anyone.

We do not share or otherwise disclose your data to anyone without your permission.
We do not mine your data for patterns.
We do not use your data to target ads.
We do not access your location data without your permission.

We welcome all questions regarding our products and your privacy. Please visit our website http://www.avgmobilation.com for further details.

Here’s what Dave has to say about this weeks show:

A super slow news week makes way for Angry Jim.  Not Angry Birds, Angry Jims.  We go over the weeks news and give away a Drobo S live on the air.  Instead of drawing a name out of the bowl we decided to draw 5, and then draw until there was a winner.  It was Drobo Island. Tune in to see who got voted off!  You will have to listen to figure out the madness but we finally peeled the Drobo S from Jim’s angry hands and gave it to a listener.

As usual you can listen to the show from here.
