Here is what Microsoft posted today:

This week marks the beta release of the highly anticipated Microsoft Office 365 Integration Module (OIM) for Small Business Server 2011 Essentials. The OIM allows small businesses to seamlessly combine the cloud-based productivity tools of Office 365 with the infrastructure provided by SBS 2011 Essentials, a first-server designed and priced especially for small businesses with limited in-house IT resources. The joint technologies provide businesses with an affordable hybrid solution that helps protect data, organize and provide access to business information from virtually anywhere, and support the applications that enable the business to run smoothly and efficiently.

The Office 365 Integration Module joins the Windows® 7 Professional Pack for Small Business Server 2011 and the Windows® Server Solutions Phone Connector Add-in to help provide a flexible, comprehensive, and powerful solution for small businesses. If you are currently taking advantage of either SBS 2011 Essentials or Office 365, we encourage you to use this opportunity to experience the collective benefits of both products. Get ready today by downloading the Office 365 Integration Module Beta and discover how SBS 2011 Essentials and Office 365 work better together to help improve productivity and business efficiency.

The Office 365 Integration Module for Windows SBS 2011 Essentials extends the features of the server Dashboard by providing seamless integration with Office 365 services. When you integrate Office 365 with the server, you can:

  • Subscribe to Office 365 or configure the server to use an existing subscription.
  • Perform the following Office 365 account management tasks from the Dashboard:
    • Bulk create Office 365 accounts for network user accounts.
    • Assign new or existing Office 365 accounts to network user accounts.
    • Manage the Office 365 account assigned to a user account throughout the lifecycle of the user account. For example, deactivating a network user account also deactivates the Office 365 account that is assigned to the user account.
  • Synchronize passwords for network user accounts and Office 365 accounts. This allows network users to sign in to Office 365 using their Windows password.
  • Link a professional Internet domain that you have set up on Window SBS to Office 365.
  • View information about your Office 365 subscription.
  • Access your Office 365 management portal from the Office 365 page of the server Dashboard.

You can install and configure the Office 365 Integration Module at any time after completing the server installation.

Office 365 helps drive productivity by giving employees virtually anywhere access to professional-grade email, web conferencing tools, documents, shared portals, contacts, and calendars delivered through the cloud. At a glance, Office 365 includes (click here for more details):

  • Microsoft® Exchange Online, offering email, calendar and contacts
  • Microsoft® SharePoint Online, a central place to share documents and information
  • Microsoft® Lync Online, a next-generation cloud communications service
  • Microsoft® Office Web Apps, convenient online companions to the Microsoft® Office suite

The solution allows companies to use the productivity tools they need while eliminating the complexity, management, and maintenance requirements of in-house messaging infrastructure. Small businesses can now combine the power of an on-premise server solution and the flexibility and convenience of cloud-based applications to help improve productivity, enhance collaboration and communication, and keep business data safe and secure.

If you’re not familiar with the benefits of SBS 2011 Essentials and the Office 365 Integration Module, let me share with you some compelling advantages for small businesses:

Get More Done – SBS 2011 Essentials and the Office 365 help small businesses employees who are always on the move that need readily accessible information and applications to service their customers or make the next sale. Office 365 enables workers to increase productivity from virtually anywhere by allowing real-time access to information and tools from a variety of devices and platforms.

Enjoy a Simplified, Flexible Solution – Small businesses are typically limited by a lack of experience and resources dedicated to in-house IT systems. Together, SBS 2011 Essentials and Office 365 offer enhanced flexibility and help reduce IT complexity with a seamless combination of comprehensive server functionality and cloud-based productivity tools that make it easy for people to connect and work together.

Help Safeguard Work – Every smart business takes precautions when it comes to safeguarding its work. Office 365 helps maintain a dependable and secure data environment allowing small businesses to rest assured knowing important business data stored in SharePoint Online is protected from loss or theft and kept safe with advanced security and reliability features.

In addition to these benefits, the Office 365 Integration Module also enables small businesses to easily administer both local and cloud users in one single place, such as adding all SBS user accounts into Office 365 and using a single custom domain name for both SBS 2011 Essentials and Office 365.

And don’t forget to buy my Working with Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials book.

TomTom Launch GO LIVE 1005 WORLD SatNav

0

TomTom has launched the GO LIVE 1005 WORLD featuring driver-friendly versions of popular social networking and online travel services.

TomTom ukexpedia1

Marking an industry first in navigation, TomTom is making it safe for drivers to tweet their estimated time of arrival on the move.

New Search & Go LIVE Services – which include Expedia and TripAdvisor- will give drivers access to trusted online reviews and the best route to get there.  This is the first time that online travel services and Twitter have been created specifically for a portable navigation device.

The Twitter functionality in the TomTom GO LIVE 1005 WORLD features an option to tweet your destination to your followers with the estimated time of arrival.  The Twitter message is pre-set by the driver before they set off, so they can concentrate safely on the road without worrying about informing people when they’re going to arrive.  The estimated time will be updated before arrival to give more accuracy.  All Twitter functionalities are optional – they can be turned on and off, depending on the user’s preferences.

Within the Search & Go LIVE Services portfolio, the Expedia feature allows you to compare accommodation prices along your journey.  TripAdvisor gives drivers access to live, impartial reviews for restaurants, hotels, spas and theatres.

Each of the new Search & Go LIVE Services has been created to work seamlessly with TomTom’s map and routing technology.  This means that once drivers have read reviews and selected where they want to go, they are automatically offered the best route to get there.  The TomTom LIVE device will calculate the quickest route to avoid traffic congestion using TomTom HD Traffic.

Outside of the Search & Go LIVE Services portfolio, the alternative route viewer function allows drivers to view an alternative route from their device for even greater control over their journey.  Making the most of TomTom HD Traffic, the feature gives an overview of the latest traffic on both routes, allowing you to select the one you prefer.

Drivers can now buy the device with maps of Europe, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South-East Asia and Southern Africa pre-installed, so they can go wherever they want, immediately.

Home Server Status for Windows Home Server 2011 Version 2.1 Released

Do you miss some of the information you used to see in WHS V1? Well Jerry Wade has written an app that brings that information to WHS 2011 and it’s just been updated to version 2.1.

Home-Server-Status_thumb_thumb_thumb[1]

This is how Jerry describes this app:

It wasn’t long ago I told my friend, John, about my wonderful WHSv1. He decided to create his own box and use WHS 2011. However, he noticed that the icon did not give him the same information as mine such as, connectivity and backup in progress (eg: blue icon). After pondering over this, I decided to put my limited programming skills to work and develop a home server status application. So, without further hesitation, world, humbly meet: Home Server Status v1.0.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • .NET Framework 4
  • WHS 2011 Connector
  • Windows 7 32/64-bit machine. (Why only Windows 7? Well, it offered the features I wanted to see such as, the overlay icons and taskbar pinning.)

Changes:

Added the ability to ‘Enable Alerts From Other PCs’  running the HSS application, via UDP on port 2564.

This addition will enable tray notifications containing the computer name and backup status for any computer running HSS on your network.

Once you have opened the application, navigate to the ‘Settings’ menu where you will find the option to enable this feature under the Admin section. Once enabled and after running a backup on your machine or another machine running HSS, you will find an additional menu item in the context list, whether you use the taskbar button or the task tray icon, called Backup Reports. This item will only show up and be enabled in your menu when a backup report exists.

* Because of the UDP addition, you will be required to allow permissions to your Windows Firewall. The only permissions you need is to your private network, NOT public.

Kinect For Windows Commercial Program Will Launch Early Next Year

0

To mark the first anniversary of the launch of Kinect for the Xbox 360, Microsoft have announced the Kinect for Windows Commercial Program will launch early next year.

kinect

Here is what Microsoft posted today:

One year ago this week, Xbox 360 set out to change the way we interact with games and entertainment with the launch of Kinect for Xbox 360. Controller-free games and entertainment – once the stuff of science fiction – had become a reality through the magic of Kinect. Sales immediately soared with more than 10 million Kinect sensors sold, setting the Guinness World Record as the fastest-selling consumer electronics device in 60 days along the way. Kinect opened up Xbox to a broad set of new audiences bringing new categories of entertainment to the platform. Leading brands such as Disney, Sesame Street and National Geographic were inspired by the simplicity and intuitiveness of Kinect’s voice and gesture control technologies, developing immersive, fun experiences for everyone. Nearly 40 world-leading entertainment providers, Comcast, Verizon FiOS and HBO GO will join current providers like Netflix, Hulu Plus and ESPN on Xbox 360 this holiday season and beyond, to deliver TV entertainment experiences that are more personal, effortless and social.

People were inspired. Six months ago, a diverse group of hobbyists and academics from around the world embraced the possibilities of Kinect. In a wave of creativity, they downloaded the Microsoft Kinect for Windows SDK and began developing creative applications and innovative uses in healthcare, education, art and so much more. Microsoft has recognized this phenomenon as “The Kinect Effect.”

Marking the November 4th anniversary of Kinect, Xbox 360 today announced that the Kinect for Windows commercial program will be launched early next year. The commercial program will give businesses the tools to develop applications that not only could improve their own operations, but potentially revolutionize entire industries. To date, more than 200 businesses worldwide—including Toyota, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Razorfish— have joined a Kinect for Windows pilot program to begin exploring the possibilities of Kinect. While no one knows what the future holds, if the past year is any indication, it’s going to be inspiring.

Two Minute Review of the Hauppauge Colossus HD Video Recorder

A few months ago, Hauppauge announced a new PCI Express card called the Colossus which enables you to record HD content, including from games consoles, directly to your computer – here is our review.

Colossus_low-res_thumb

Colossus is a High Definition video recorder for making real-time H.264 compressed recordings at resolutions up to 1080i. HD PVR records component video (YCrCb) from video game consoles and cable TV and satellite set top boxes, with a built-in IR blaster to automatically change TV channels for scheduled recordings.

Colossus also has an HDMI input port, so you can record HD video at up to 1080i from a un-encrypted HDMI source.

Audio is recorded using two channel stereo or optical audio with five channel Dolby Digital.

The recording format is AVCHD, which can be used to burn Blu-ray DVD disks. Two hours of HD recordings, recorded at 5 Mbits/sec, can be burnt onto a standard 4.7 GByte DVD-R or DVD-RW disk for playback on a Blu-ray DVD player.

Who are Hauppauge?

From their website:

Headquartered in Hauppauge, NY, about 40 miles east of New York City, Hauppauge Computer Works has been bringing TV to the PC since 1992. The Company is the worldwide leader in developing and manufacturing PC based TV tuners and data broadcast receiver products. Hauppauge’s products allow PC users to watch television on their PC screens, videoconference and create both still video images and digital TV recordings. Hauppauge’s flagship product, the WinTV, is the leading branded TV tuner card for PCs.

Hauppauge Computer Works is a division of Hauppauge Digital Inc. In December of 2008, Hauppauge Digital Inc. acquired the Pinnacle PCTV product line from Avid, and now runs PCTV tuner products as a separate division. PCTV has their research and development labs in Braunschweig, Germany.

Features

  • Record high definition video using H.264 video encoding with digital audio. Colossus is an internal PCI Express board, full height, and runs with Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP.

  • Record high definition video at up to 1080i resolution. Also records standard definition video. Record at datarates from 1Mbs to 20Mbs.
  • Record your game play in HD (up to 1080i) with component video and digital audio (optical) from Xbox360 or PS3 game consoles.
  • Record your favorite TV programs from HD cable TV and satellite set top boxes. Colossus connects to most HD cable TV and satellite TV receivers with component video and optical digital audio. Stereo audio inputs are supported, too.
  • Burn your video game play or your favorite TV programs onto AVCHD disks in high definition using standard DVD media. These AVCHD disks can be played back on a blu-ray DVD player. Up to 2 hours of HD AVCHD video can be recorded on standard DVD-R disks at 5MBits/sec.
  • Create HD recordings which can be played back on the Xbox 360 and PS3
  • Includes Hauppauge’s WinTV v7 TV application for automatic recording of TV programs from cable or satellite set top boxes

Note: most cable and satellite TV receivers do not support un-encrypted HDMI video.
