Halo 4 Crimson Map Pack details and pictures

1

343 Industries announced today the Halo 4 Crimson Map Pack will be available for download starting 10th December, featuring three new environments for you to wage battle on Xbox LIVE with friends.

harvest_action_1

Descriptions of the three maps are as follows:

· Wreckage: Wreckage is the manifestation of the chaos of war. A medium-sized, asymmetrical map great for accommodating a wide range of objective-based game modes including King of the Hill and Capture the Flag. It is a ravaged environment of crashed debris, where the surrounding destruction creates complex paths perfect for throwing off your opponents, or testing the limits of your Warthog. This devastated landscape provides plenty of cover, with tons of nooks and crannies at your disposal while fighting for your turn to become King. Wreckage supports up to 16 players in Infinity Slayer and up to 12 players in a variety of other modes, including Capture the Flag, King of the Hill and Oddball.

· Harvest: Harvest is a canon concept brought to life – the doomed agricultural planet where humans first made contact with the Covenant. A small to mid-size map, Harvest is ideal for Capture the Flag. Here, you’ll need to get creative to effectively use light vehicles which are limited to the exterior pathways and can’t get into the bases, making this map perfect for infantry firefights and face-to-face skirmishes. Snipers will also feel right at home; long sightlines are broken up by great cover and hiding spots. Harvest allows up to 12 players to face off in Capture the Flag, Infinity Slayer, King of the Hill, SWAT and Slayer Pro.

harvest_env_2 harvest_env_3shatter_action_1 shatter_action_2

· Shatter:  Shatter is themed around natural crystalline surfaces and the huge UNSC factories mining them. This large, symmetrical map is a playground for the Warthog and Mantis – its open pathways make it easy to get around, whether on foot or in vehicles. Shatter is a great fit for Dominion and the new game type Extraction. For some close-quarters face-time, escape the open landscape and duck into a mining facility, or slip through a doorway and hunt unsuspecting Spartans. Shatter enables multiplayer mayhem for up to 16 players in Infinity Slayer and up to 12 players in other modes, such as Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, Dominion and Extraction.

Available this December on Xbox LIVE for 800 Microsoft points, the Crimson Map Pack is the first of three upcoming “Halo 4” War Games add-ons, and will include eight all-new Achievements worth a total of 250 Gamerscore. Players who purchase the “Halo 4” War Games Map Pass or “Halo 4” Limited Edition will receive access to all three map packs as they become available in December, February and April at a 15 percent savings versus purchasing them individually.

shatter_env_6 wreckage_action_1wreckage_action_2 wreckage_action_3

Crimson Map Pack owners will have exclusive access to a single premium playlist that will only feature the new maps and will be the only place players can enjoy unique 6 vs. 6 matchmaking experiences, the new game type “Extraction,” and a wide range of voting combinations for different maps and modes.

In addition to the Crimson Map Pack, 343 Industries today unveiled “Extraction,” a new game type that will be introduced to “Halo 4” online matchmaking day and date with the map pack on 10th Dec:

· “Extraction”: Extraction is a 5 vs. 5 objective-based game type where opposing Spartan teams are tasked with extracting assets from various sites around the map. Once a team has found a site and is in position, they must plant their beacon and protect it from the opposing team while the extraction process occurs. If the defending team remains in control of the beacon, they receive one point, however if the opposing team overtakes the site before extraction is complete, the point goes to them. Once a site has been extracted, a new site becomes available. The first team to extract five points wins.

Microsoft Surface Pro Pricing Announced

Microsoft announced the pricing for the Surface Pro today.  Read on for the details.

surface_05

The Surface RT has been on sale for about a month now, and Microsoft is releasing the Surface Pro in January 2013.  The Pro will be based on a Core i5 chipset and will be a Windows 8 PC, not running RT.

One question that I’ve had is what will the Surface’s pricing be?  Well, today Microsoft announced that.  The 65GB version will be $899 plus the touch cover, and the 128GB version will set you back $999 plus the cover.  Here is most of the blog post announcing that:

It’s hard to believe it’s been just over a month since Surface with Windows RT hit the market. The response from Surface customers has been fantastic and exciting to see. In addition to sharing the terrific results that Microsoft is seeing with Windows 8 at a technology conference earlier this week, we also announced that Surface with Windows 8 Pro would be available in January 2013.

Today, I want to share a bit more detail about the growing Surface family of products and Surface with Windows 8 Pro, specifically around pricing. In January, Surface with Windows 8 Pro will be available in two versions and pricing will start at $899:

· 64GB standalone version at $899

· 128GB standalone version at $999

Both versions will both include a Surface pen with Palm Block technology and include the ability to use a Touch Cover or Type Cover (sold separately).

Surface with Windows 8 Pro uses the same familiar elegant design principles as Surface with Windows RT including the Dark Titanium VaporMg casing, dual 2×2 MIMO antennas designed specifically for Surface and of course the kickstand.

However, it also has some differences.

On the inside, Surface with Windows 8 Pro will come with Intel’s next generation Core i5 processor. This chip will give Surface with Windows 8 Pro a graphics boost for its 10.6” 16:9 ClearType display that runs at a 1920×1080 full HD resolution. Surface with Windows 8 Pro also includes a full-size USB 3.0 port. Its Mini DisplayPort can drive an external display up to 2560X1440 resolution. And, as I mentioned above, Surface with Windows 8 Pro will support Pen input. This is an amazing feature for all you note-takers or document editors out there, especially since it has expanded capacitive and digitizing technology we’re calling Palm Block that will prevent your handwriting from getting interrupted if you accidently place your palm on the screen as you write. This feature is pretty cool, and allows for a great inking experience alongside a great touch experience when needed.

Surface with Windows 8 Pro will run your current Windows 7 desktop applications – it’s a full PC AND a tablet.

And all this in a PC that will weigh less than two pounds and be less than 14 millimeters thick.

This is right where I expected it to land.  Since my ASUS EP-121 is getting a bit long in the tooth, I might go ahead and pick one of these up.  Are you interested in buying the Surface Pro?

Freemium, blessing or curse?

0

Freemium is a marketing strategy where a product is given for free but a premium is charged for additional features i.e. free + premium = freemium. It’s likely we’ve all come into contact with freemium in one way or another and has been used in digital media for a long time now.

It has shown some promising results in the mobile gaming and PC game markets and certain people seem to think it could work on the console big hitters too. In theory it offers gamers a better deal. It would work very similar to PSN or XBOX live titles where you get a trial of the game, maybe a couple of levels, and then you purchase an unlock code for the full game.

One thing freemium offers is a chance to try a game before spending up to £50 on it. It could also mean you may be able to avoid buying sections of a game you’re not interested in, if enough options are available. More titles should be available as it makes it easier and cheaper to get a game on a console reducing the risk if the game is a flop.

One of my favorite titles this generation is the much underestimated Valkyria Chronicles. Unfortunately not being a huge financial success the game releasing sequels on hand held consoles. Though this isn’t a problem I would love to have seen another major Valkyria Chronicles make it to full consoles and free-to-play may have made that a reality.

This is all great in theory and might work well when we’re talking about hand-held games and PSN titles or stuff from the 360 Store but I fear for the way this will work on our beloved blockbusters. How would Hitman: Absolution work free-to-play? Which bits do we pay for and which bits are free? It really seems like it will depend on who is in charge of publishing whatever game is running the freemium model.

For this we turn to the mighty marketing of EA. Who else. This article from ps3trophies.org makes for very interesting reading. EA CEO John Riccitiello points out “When you are six hours into playing Battlefield and you run out of ammo in your clip, and we ask you for a dollar to reload. You’re really not very price sensitive at that point in time”  Using the free sections of the game to get us hooked and then charging us once we’re invested. It’s so easy once your invested to just pay another couple of pounds on whatever feature the game hasn’t come with.

Perhaps I’m too cynical but I get the feeling this is the reality of the freemium model. How many bits of PC software let you get 70% of the way through whatever task they perform and then announce they’re not free and ask for money relying on the fact your invested and don’t want to have wasted your time.

I also fear for our top budget games. I just can’t see Assassins Creed, Call Of Duty, Hitman, Metal Gear Solid, Far Cry and many more examples working as freemium games. So I find myself at a huge contradiction. I love games and any support for the industry and its many struggling developers is great. I’d love to see more dreams from small developers realized and get more cash into the industry but not at the expense of my experience.

The proposed new console “Ouya” uses freemium throughout and being based on Linux encourages “hacking”. This could be great but I just can’t see it competing with the classic console experience and almost every advocate of the freemium model coming to console blockbusters seems to be either invested in the Ouya in some way or a marketing suit.

Blu-rays have been around for years and I can still find both DVD and BD versions of films in stores. I’m all up for change but we’ve only really just started looking at the potential for changing a controller for other human interfaces. And actually replacing a classic console controller is many years away, if at all on the cards. Disc-less consoles seem realistic but even that progression will take time until discs are no longer available at all and in my opinion is where focus should be.

Despite the fact this is already an option, titles on the Playstation Store are still charging up to £60 for a game when I can get it for £40 in a shop. If these price structures where more realistic publishers could cut out the middle man and essentially destroy second hand gaming while they’re at it. Surely they would get more cash this way without altering our experience.

I’m stuck in my ways when it comes to games and I think freemium should stick with its current applications. I would love to see more developers given the opportunity to create games and obviously I want the industry to have more funds but doing it at what seems like the detriment of the actual games we get to play sounds rather self-defeating to me and I think there are other, better, options for the industry to move forward.

Final Thoughts

There are five functional buttons integrated into the right earcup. You can use these to start/pause/skip music tracks, answer incoming phone calls and control volume levels. These work very well.

Pairing the headphones with whatever audio device you want to use was easy.

The microphone works very well and the sound quality was good. They can be used with Skype, Messenger and anything else that uses a microphone.

The battery life is great too – you can easily get a few days use out of them without having to worry about recharging.

Personally I think these headphones are aimed more at children than adults, primarily because they are quite small, but kids will love them.

The P311 headphones come in black, blue and white and would make a great Christmas present.

Price wise you can find the Arctic P311s for around £20, which is a really good price.
