NETGEAR Upgrades Beamforming in AC Router and Adaptor

NETGEAR recently announced an upgrade to improve performance of their beamforming solution for their AC router and adaptor.  Read on for details.

beamDiagrams

NETGEAR recently announced an upgrade to improve performance of their beamforming solution for their AC router and adaptor. Beamforming is a feature in 802.11AC routers that allow for the signal to be concentrated on your device more accurately and is expected to improve performance for your wireless network.  Here is the NETGEAR press release:

NETGEAR 802.11AC ROUTER GOES FASTER AND FARTHER WITH BEAMFORMING+

R6300 WiFi Router and A6200 WiFi USB Adapter now have Beamforming+ for optimal wireless performance for video streaming, downloads and online gaming

SAN JOSE, Calif. — April 22, 2013 — NETGEAR®, Inc. (NASDAQGM: NTGR) (www.netgear.com), a global networking company that delivers innovative products to consumers, businesses and service providers, today announced support for Beamforming+ (www.netgear.com/80211ac) on the NETGEAR R6300 802.11ac Dual Band Gigabit WiFi Router and the NETGEAR A6200 802.11ac Dual Band WiFi USB Adapter (www.netgear.com/landing/fastestwifi/). Beamforming+ is also available through a free firmware upgrade for current NETGEAR customers of the R6300 WiFi Router and the A6200 WiFi USB Adapter. The new router firmware improves WiFi performance and range when connecting to other WiFi devices. You’ll see even more improvement in WiFi performance and reliability when you connect your R6300 Router to a PC or laptop configured with an A6200 Adapter or with an 802.11ac device with Beamforming support. A second R6300 acting as a client bridge would also provide a higher performance solution for critical video over WiFi applications.

NETGEAR Beamforming+ is a smart, signal-focusing technology that extends coverage, reduces interference and dead spots, and boosts the speed of your 802.11ac WiFi connections. Beamforming+ refers to NETGEAR’s implementation of the Beamforming standard with a fine-tuned WiFi design for improved WiFi range and performance, which the company demonstrated at the Consumer Electronics Show in January.

NETGEAR Beamforming+ recognizes the location of a wireless device on your network and directs the WiFi signal directly at the device, constantly checking and tracking moving devices such as your mobile phones and tablets. This targeted approach amplifies the WiFi signal by adjusting the phase of the transmitted signal, delivering stable WiFi connections for voice and video. The result is a highly tuned WiFi network that optimizes overall wireless performance and delivers the experiences you want, such as fast downloads, clearer voice calls, uninterrupted HD video, and lag-free gaming.

“Beamforming is the next big thing in WiFi signal technology, and NETGEAR is proud to bring it to you on our market-leading 802.11ac wireless products. 802.11ac is the wireless standard you need to support the increasingly heavy demands on your network for voice, video and data,” said Sandeep Harpalani, NETGEAR director of product marketing for retail networking products. “With NETGEAR Beamforming+, we raise the bar further by providing significant improvement in performance, especially at long distances where connection speeds and reliability are challenging. Our test data demonstrates that when we enable Beamforming+ on our R6300 WiFi Router, we see performance increase by 60 percent at a distance of around 50 feet when connecting to an 802.11ac device.”

802.11ac for the World’s Fastest WiFi Connections

The next evolution in wireless technology, the upcoming 802.11ac wireless standard is the world’s fastest WiFi, providing Gigabit WiFi speeds so you can download web content faster and synchronize large video or music files more quickly. The increased speed of 802.11ac technology is ideal for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets by providing three times the performance for a similar amount of battery consumption of devices using the current 802.11n WiFi standard. As a result, many companies are now releasing smartphones with 802.11ac WiFi, such as the Samsung Galaxy S®4 and the HTC One®, with additional 802.11ac-enabled smartphones, tablets and TVs from other leading manufacturers anticipated to debut in the coming year.

In 2012, NETGEAR was the first to announce an 802.11ac product family to take advantage of the upcoming standard. The NETGEAR R6300 WiFi Router is the industry’s first 802.11ac router offering Gigabit speeds and supports combined WiFi speeds up to 1750 Mbps (450 Mbps @ 2.4 Ghz 802.11n + 1300 Mbps @ 5 Ghz 802.11ac). The R6300 is backward compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n to provide optimum interoperability with legacy WiFi devices and maintaining maximum performance on 802.11n wireless networks. The NETGEAR A6200 WiFi Adapter is the industry’s first-to-market 802.11ac dual band WiFi USB adapter that enables you to easily upgrade your existing PC or laptop to 802.11ac performance.

IllumiRoom Tech is ‘Five or Ten Years Away’

0

Microsoft’s IllumiRoom is unlikely to launch with the next-generation Xbox, researchers have suggested. In an interview with The Verge , Microsoft researcher Hrvoje Benko said that the IllumiRoom is purely a proof of concept project designed to offer a glimpse into the future.

illumiroom-concept

“At this point it’s purely a research project,” Benko explained, before suggesting that the technology is still five or ten years off.

Benko did, however, say that the IllumiRoom researchers had been working closely with the Kinect and Xbox teams and that a simple application interface had already been created for developers.

Meanwhile, talking about the advantages IllumiRoom has over virtual reality headsets, fellow researcher Brett Jones said that Microsoft’s device offers a shared experience.

“It enables augmented reality gaming, not just virtual reality, and it enables a shared experience, so you can see and interact with the player sitting next to you,” Jones explained.

Unveiled at this year’s CES event in Las Vegas, IllumiRoom is a projector device that can be used to extend the gaming content out of the TV or show in-game elements such as explosions and snow.

Gears of War: Judgment Call to Arms Map Pack out now

1

Aftermath_1_thumb1_thumb_thumb_thumb

Microsoft and Epic Studios have now released the second expansion in the “Gears of War: Judgment” multiplayer experience, the Call to Arms Map Pack.

Developed by Epic Games and People Can Fly, the Call to Arms Map Pack brings players three new multiplayer maps, a brand-new mode called “Master at Arms,” and six armour and gun skins for customising your characters and weapons.

Set against the backdrop of the Locust invasion of Halvo Bay, all three new maps provide a mix of close quarters and vertical combat, keeping Gearheads immersed in the action.  The Call to Arms Map Pack provides 10 new Achievements worth a total of 250 Gamerscore.

For more information on the Call to Arms Map Pack, please visit the “Gears of War” community site epicgames.com/community. Full descriptions of the new maps and mode are below:

New Maps:

· Terminal: The speed and ferocity of the Locust invasion took Halvo Bay completely by surprise.  Residents scrambled to evacuate by every means possible, and COG forces were called in to maintain order as martial law was enforced.  However, the Locust showed no mercy, and gave no quarter; they swept through train terminals like this one to take advantage of the close quarters and sheer number of defenceless humans trapped within its walls.  Sometimes, COG forces could hold the line long enough for a final evacuation, but too many lost their lives in defence of the people and the land they loved.

· Blood Drive: As casualties started to mount, the staff at Halvo Memorial quickly began what would become the largest triage effort in the history of Sera.  Their “Give Blood Today” campaign inspired a global blood drive in support of COG forces and wounded civilians.  Sadly, Halvo fell quickly, and the hospital became a battlefront instead of a sanctuary.  The seed of hope was planted, however, and government-run Memorial hospitals across the country mobilised to keep the effort alive until Jacinto Memorial was the last standing bastion of hope for the people of Sera.

· Boneyard: The concept of traditional memorial services had to be suspended due to the constant stream and alarming volume of casualties as Sera fell victim to the Locust Horde.  Memorial grounds quickly became boneyards.  Unmarked holes became grave sites and mausoleums were filled with the nameless remains of the fallen, their skeletons piled into heaps.  Tread lightly, you never know what, or who, you’re walking on, and one day you’re bound to join them.

The Call to Arms Map Pack will be available on Xbox LIVE for 1000 Microsoft Points. Players who purchase the “Gears of War: Judgment” VIP Season Pass will receive early access to map packs and a 25 percent savings versus purchasing them individually.1

New Mode: “Master At Arms”

This new free-for-all game mode exclusive to “Gears of War: Judgment” will test the true range of your soldiering skills.  The goal is to get a kill with each of the 20 different available weapons, without resorting to melee or grenade tactics.  Every successful kill will automatically advance you to the next available weapon until you have used them all and proven your skill as a true Master at Arms.

We recently interviewed Jim Brown from Epic Games. We talked about old characters and new, new modes, cosplay and we even have new gameplay footage to share. Here is that interview:
