Meet the Sony HDR MV1 Music Video Recorder

The new HDR-MV1 Music Video Recorder from Sony lets you shoot and share every performance with crisp, clear pictures and studio-quality sound to match.

Ideal for band rehearsals, practice sessions and live gigs, the slim, portable HDR-MV1 makes a great partner for recording groups, solo voices and instruments. Capturing Full HD video and uncompressed hi-fi stereo digital audio, it is a big step up from recording muffled clips on your camera phone. Plus, when you’re done, it’s easy to connect wirelessly with a smartphone or tablet for on-the-spot web uploads.

CX44000-1200

HDR-MV1 Music Video Recorder lets you record and instantly share Full HD videos with hi-fi stereo sound

  • Record live musical      performances, demos and rehearsals with studio-quality Linear PCM sound
  • Superb Full HD video quality      with wide-angle lens and high sensitivity for low-light shooting
  • Quick, easy sharing with Wi-Fi and NFC for One-touch transfers

The HDR-MV1 resolves every detail of your musical efforts with full-range, beautifully rich audio you’d expect from Sony – whether you’re recording a delicate flute or the action of a heavy metal rock band. The high quality 120-degree X-Y stereo microphone stands out of the recorder body, guaranteeing superb depth and separation. An on-screen meter allows easy checking and adjustment of mic levels for clear, undistorted recordings. And as an extra pro-style refinement, there’s an on-board limiter that guards against signal clipping when volume levels start climbing. If you want, plug in an external microphone or connect instruments directly to capture a totally pure performance.

Linear PCM recording assures uncompressed sound that’s even better than CD – making the HDR-MV1 ideal as a ‘standalone’ audio recorder even when you don’t need to shoot video. Alternatively, switch to web-friendly AAC format that is great for speedy Internet uploads or there is also a handy speaker in-built for checking your recordings instantly.

Vibrant, dynamic sound is matched by pristine video quality to match. From cramped rehearsals to expansive stages: the wide-angle 120-degree Carl Zeiss lens captures the whole scene, so no-one in the band gets left out of the action. Even dimly-lit clubs and practice rooms are no problem: the back-illuminated Exmor R™ CMOS sensor grabs detail-packed Full HD video with extremely low noise.

Poor quality clips with out of sync sound and screen are a thing of the past with the Audio lip sync feature – making sure the music stays precisely matched to the live view image.

Built-in Wi-Fi connects the HDR-MV1 with your smartphone or tablet for easy wireless uploads of your clips with no PC needed. Just touch the recorder against your NFC-equipped Android device for one-touch sharing (movie only). Even use your mobile as a handy remote to start recording and check camera angles on screen.

MVR Studio software (PC and Mac) is available as a download from the Sony website for easy editing, polishing and web uploads of your recordings. Available as an option, the LCS-MVA carry case protects the Music Video Recorder while you’re out and about, gigging or travelling.

The new HDR-MV1 Music Video Recorder from Sony is available in the UK from the end of November 2013, priced at £260 from www.sony.co.uk.

Sony Announces 4K and 3D Home Projectors

Today at IFA, Sony announced two market-leading home cinema projectors – the 4K VPL-VW500ES and a Full HD 3D home projector, the VPL-HW55ES. Both projectors are designed to bring the high quality images of a big screen cinema experience into the home via the power of Sony’s cutting edge technology.

4K VPL-VW500ES home cinema projector

The VPL-VW500ES home cinema projector has been introduced to expand Sony’s 4K home cinema range. It will sit alongside the VPL-VW1000ES, the world’s first 4K native home cinema projector, launched in January 2012.

VPLVW500ES

The VPL-VW500ES offers DCI based 4096 x 2160 resolution, delivering the very highest quality 4K content. The 4K experience is created using native 4K SXRD panels that utilise Sony’s 4K expertise from the professional digital cinema market. In addition, the projector has the latest HDMI standard (HDMI 2.0) to accommodate 4K/60P* content, which allows action to appear smoother, without the need for the electronic enhancement of pixels. Supporting 4K native resolution, the VPL-VW500ES also features an exclusive Super Resolution 4K upscaler called Reality Creation. This dramatically enhances high definition 1080p content, allowing viewers to enjoy 4K images with their existing Blu-ray Discs, even in 3D. Furthermore, the VPL-VW500ES has an original 4K up-scaling algorithm designed for “Mastered in 4K” Blu-ray Discs from Sony Pictures Entertainment, which enable the viewer to enjoy more accurate 4K native picture quality.

The VPL-VW500ES has 1,700 ANSI-lumen brightness and a 200,000:1 contrast ratio, which delivers a sharper picture quality. The projector has rich colour reproduction thanks to TRILUMINOS display technology, an enhanced optical engine design and auto-calibration features. Its manual colour correction tool allows users to adjust the hue, saturation and brightness to obtain a picture quality customised to their tastes. Motionflow picture technology also works to deliver clearer, less blurry images when watching fast-paced, cinematic action.

The VPL-VW500ES is compact and has a front air exhaust cooling system. Its flexibility means it is cable of projecting large distances without having to alter the projector’s position in the room. The projector uses a 2.06 zoom powered lens with a wide shift range, which removes the requirement for additional platform extensions in ceiling mounts. A built-in RF transmitter provides further installation flexibility with a strong wireless signal for wider coverage.

Full HD 3D VPL-HW55ES projector

The Full HD 3D VPL-HW55ES projector is the next generation of Sony’s industry-acclaimed and multiple-award winning VPL-HW50ES, announced at IFA in 2012.

Enhanced light efficiency and an optimised optical block enable the VPL-HW55ES projector to reach 1,700 ANSI lumen brightness, delivering clearer images in well-lit environments. The VPL-HW55ES also has an approximately 5,000 hour long lasting lamp due to its improved lamp cooling system.

An optical engine upgrade, contrast enhancer technology and Advanced Iris 3 technology enable a dynamic contrast ratio of more than 120,000:1. This increases black and white levels without diminishing peak brightness to maximise detail during darker scenes. Additional features such as Sony’s Bright Cinema and Bright TV mode, with SXRD panels, enhance the 3D image even further. The projector also has Sony’s Reality Creation technology.

The VPL-HW55ES has a built-in 3D IR transmitter. It is also compatible with an external 3D RF transmitter which provides further 3D synchronisation stability and coverage.

Both projectors have wireless HDMI compatibility as optional accessories. This enables them to receive a video signal from Blu-ray players and game consoles, allowing the AV environment to remain clutter free.

Commenting on the 4K VPL-VW500ES home cinema projector and the Full HD 3D VPL-HW55ES, Tak Nakane, Product Manager at Sony Europe said: “The VPL-VW500ES brings the cinema experience into the home like never before and reinforces Sony’s commitment to lead in 4K innovation from lens to living room. Innovations such as Sony’s 4K SXRD panels provide unrivalled picture quality at high resolution to make the 4K dream a more affordable reality. The addition of the VPL-HW55ES provides a premium 3D home cinema experience and expands the product range from which our customers can choose.”

Both the VPL-VW500ES and the VPL-HW55ES are available from the end of October.

Get ready for Pokemon Bank and New Pokemon 3DS and More

0

In a surprising twist announced this morning during a special Nintendo Direct presentation, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y players do not receive Chespin, Fennekin, or Froakie from Professor Sycamore but are in fact given the choice of a classic partner Pokémon—BulbasaurCharmander, or Squirtle—from the very first Pokémon games, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue! Adding to the excitement, once a player has evolved this Pokémon into Venusaur, Charizard, or Blastoise and obtained its unique Mega Stone, the Pokémon will be able to Mega Evolve while in battle. Mega VenusaurMega Charizard, and Mega Blastoise will possess overwhelming powers never before seen in a Pokémon game. Players can choose fan favourite Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle when Pokémon X and Pokémon Y launch worldwide 12th October, 2013, for the Nintendo 3DS.

More secrets about Mega Evolution were also revealed today. It was previously announced that certain Pokémon needed to hold a unique Mega Stone in order to Mega Evolve, but now it’s known that there is a second requirement players must fulfil for Mega Evolution to occur. Trainers must also obtain a bracelet called the Mega Ring that holds a mysterious stone called a Key Stone. The Trainer’s Key Stone resonates with the Mega Stone held by his or her Pokémon, and together they trigger the Evolution that is normally impossible—Mega Evolution.

Director from GAME FREAK inc., Mr. Junichi Masuda, also announced Pokémon Bank—a new Nintendo 3DS application and service that allows Pokémon X and Pokémon Y players to conveniently store up to 3,000 of their beloved Pokémon on the Internet.  Pokémon Bank gives players the flexibility to store and deposit 100 Boxes worth of Pokémon. This is in addition to the Boxes found within Pokémon Xand Pokémon Y, just like in previous Pokémon titles.

Mega Venusaur Screenshot 3

Additional features of Pokémon Bank include the ability to deposit and withdraw Pokémon from multiple copies of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Once a Pokémon X or Pokémon Y Game Card is inserted into a Nintendo 3DS system or the downloadable version of the game is opened, the Pokémon Bank software can be turned on for use. Players can then transfer Pokémon from multiple copies of the game via Pokémon Bank to one copy of Pokémon X or Pokémon Y.

Pokémon Bank software is activated upon payment of an annual service fee. This charge will support maintenance of the online server that allows players to store up to 3,000 Pokémon conveniently, and will provide the application’s support for future Pokémon titles.

Players who activate Pokémon Bank, will be able to use its linked application, Poké Transporter, which makes transferring many Pokémon caught in other Pokémon games easy.

What used to be a lengthy process to transfer Pokémon from a previous Pokémon game to the latest titles is now a breeze with Poké Transporter—just insert Pokémon Black, Pokémon White, Pokémon Black 2, or Pokémon White 2into your Nintendo 3DS system and use Poké Transporter to transfer Pokémon from those games into Pokémon Bank.

Pokémon Bank will be available in North America on Nintendo eShop. More details about this software, including a free trial period, will be added to Pokemon.com in the near future.

Also announced in this morning’s Nintendo Direct presentation were details for the North American release of two special Nintendo 3DS XL hardware designs featuring imagery from Pokémon X and Pokémon Y.

These systems come in Red or Blue and feature brand new Legendary Pokémon Xerneas and Yveltal. The systems will launch on September 27 at a suggested retail price of $199.99 each.

Review of SimCity from EA

0

The infamous server issues that plagued SimCity on its launch will probably never be forgotten. Even to this day if the SimCity servers decide to go offline for a bit you won’t be able to play your game. I appreciate the new online features in SimCity are heavily reliant on being always online but you can’t help but think an offline mode wouldn’t have hurt too much. Even as I write this (September 2013) a good while after release I occasionally find a server is offline temporarily and I am unable to play my city.

Despite that once you get into a game, SimCity has clearly come a long way. Staples of the franchise are still present like creating residential, commercial and industrial zones that develop over time rather than you building individual buildings. Depending on the needs of your population you will need to play a balancing act between the 3 zones to ensure your city develops correctly and turns a profit.

CurvyRoads_1

On top of the three zones you will be charged with building power, waste disposal, transport and education services to name just a few. Something that certainly helps you reach higher level buildings, and therefore a more advanced city, is that power and water are now transported along roads. Provided you connect a service to a road, which you have to, every other building connected to that road will be supplied. This certainly cuts down on the tedious, and often temperamental, construction of pipes and the like.

You can spend quite some time waiting for the cash to upgrade roads but luckily there is an easy to use upgrade feature. The only thing you can’t do is upgrade from a “normal” road to an avenue – which is stupid. You would need to flatten zones and redesign areas to upgrade from one to the other which basically means you won’t bother and you’ll just build avenues to start with, which can then be upgraded. It’s more expensive but the only real way to build a city if you plan on developing it past the 30 minute mark.

As you build these services your city will become more advanced and so too will the needs and requirements of your citizens. These are pointed out by little speech bubbles above certain people’s houses that may be simple requests or may provide a reward if you meat an objective. The mini-objectives help keep the game as fresh as possible, even late into the game. Usually they are not too complicated but almost act as a guide as to what you should build or do next. The only thing that gets left out of these mini-objective is education.

UniversityCity_2

That is until you start with a small school at which point your Sims can’t get enough of it! This may be mentioned in the tutorial but unfortunately my game would not allow me to select “next” during a step in my tutorial and I had to restart the game, at which point the tutorial disappeared. Even if it had been available again I probably would have skipped it rather than risking getting halfway through only for my game to bug out again.

So this left my first city an uneducated directionless mess. Not a good move at all. Education is certainly the key to a successful city, reducing crime, illness and just about every negative effect your citizens can have. This in turn massively reduces the amount of fire stations, police stations and hospitals you will need; which are not cheap buildings at all.

So my second city was all happiness and sunshine with great facilities and quite a few of the more advances buildings. Zones where balanced and money was coming in well. And then I realized I’d filled the map. Each map on SimCity is made up of a varying amount smaller areas. The different areas can be owned by different players who may help one another by trading goods and sharing resources. Or you can own all of the areas yourself to create one giant interconnected map.

SimsFightFires_1

The problem is it doesn’t work. I was just getting into my game when I realized I’d finished. Sure there where things left I could do to advance my city but absolutely no options to expand. The setup of a game like SimCity is certainly where the greatest challenge lies but once you’re comfortably up and running there needs to be more to do. Frankly at that point I didn’t feel much like starting all over again with a blank slate. I’m sure at some point I would have but I’d like the option to build my city further.

So bad are the map size restrictions that it’s actually quite difficult to fit in all the zones and buildings you want. You will soon reach the limit and have nothing left to do. It also puts a limit on how financially successful your city will be because more Sims equals more spending which equals more profit. But not if there’s no space for them.

Luckily during your brief experience with your city you will be using probably one of the best UI’s available. It’s so easy to use that nobody should have difficulty finding their way around it. As a nice by-product it looks good too blending seamlessly with SimCity’s new “model village” visual style. One thing you certainly can’t complain about is how SimCity looks. Scrolling the map by moving the mouse to the edge of the screen blurs movement (similar to R.U.S.E or Air Land Battle) but never looses functionality.

Time on SimCity is made up of many shorter games building up a city and then abandoning it for another. Although creating a city is user friendly, and looks fantastic, it can’t avoid feeling futile when you know before long you will need to leave it – just because you ran out of space. Despite the increased server stability the completely unnecessary always online requirement can still disable your game, and gamers with unreliable internet connections can’t even consider SimCity. SimCity is a great game that hinders user experience with its own unnecessary features. I think I might have a go on Anno 2070…
