DESOLATIUM is a wonderful Lovecraftian-inspired experience. Furthermore, its classic approach and familiar mechanics ensure that it is easy to understand and simple to play. However, some complex moments will tax your brain whilst testing your resolve.

This point-and-click adventure was developed by Superlumen and published by SOEDESCO. Moreover, it has some eureka moments as you piece together every problem you face. Therefore, if you love this genre, and you have the patience to see the wood for the trees, it will be right up your street.

DESOLATIUM tells a twisted tale. 

I adore anything Lovecraftian. The insane storylines are complemented by mind-twisting moments and absurd monsters. Additionally, developers have a mountain of creative licence at their disposal. Consequently, you are taken on a strange adventure that twists and turns throughout. 

DESOLATIUM follows 4 protagonists. Each of these characters is searching for a missing person. A cult has captured the missing individual, and here is where the madness begins. As you undertake your journey, you’ll witness some horrific and bizarre sights. Yet, it is this insane storytelling that links it to the Lovecraftian theme.

Explore the bookshop and find the hidden treasures.

Old-school mechanics. 

This genre has evolved. However, there is a special place in my heart for the trailblazers. As such, I was thrilled to see a fixed-screen perspective. This rigid approach forces players to examine, manipulate, and combine every usable object they encounter. Once you exhaust every possibility, you must move on by clicking open doorways or the edge of the screen.

This static gameplay forces players to examine every nook and cranny. Furthermore, there is a lot of back and forth as you desperately try to solve each puzzle. Talking of puzzles, the developers have mixed this up nicely. Subsequently, there are some genuine eureka moments and a sense of reward when you get things right. 

DESOLATIUM looks fantastic. 

Though DESOLATIUM takes a retro approach, visually, it is amazing. The attention to detail and the shocking imagery are captivating. Moreover, the first-person perspective is immersive and enhances the oppressive and creepy nature of the action. 

The audio was equally good. The minor-toned tracks are sinister and uncomfortable to listen to. Alongside this, the sound effects are interesting, and the acting is of a good standard. Accordingly, the developers have done a wonderful job. 

Get some advice by chatting to the mysterious man.

Responsive controls. 

This genre is better with a mouse and keyboard. However, DESOLATIUM’s control setup is excellent. The responsive inputs and smooth on-screen cursor ensure that it is simple to play. 

Where this is lacking, though, is replay value and longevity. Disappointingly, there is little reason to return once you’ve completed it. However, the first playthrough is great, so it is still worthwhile.

DESOLATIUM is weird and wonderful. 

Though this won’t be for everyone, I loved its old-school approach and excellent story. Additionally, the acting was fantastic and, graphically, it was well-considered. Furthermore, the puzzles are challenging without being too unforgiving. Therefore, I enjoyed it and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you escape the cult? Explore your surroundings, solve the puzzles, and keep on running.

If I was to be picky, I’d say that the bass can be overpowering at times. Consequently, this can cause problems during heavy artillery moments. However, this problem rarely rears its ugly head, and it shouldn’t cause too many issues. 

The microphone utilises 3 stage profiling for voice monitoring. Subsequently, you can adjust the sound of your voice as you talk to your friends. Alternatively, if you wish to mute your chat altogether, you can flip the mic into the off position. This was a great design choice that helps to maintain privacy.

The audio quality of the Victrix Gambit Wireless Gaming Headset. 

The most important aspect of any headset is its audio quality. Thankfully, the Victrix Gambit Wireless Gaming Headset delivers an impressive range of tones. Furthermore, the meaty 50mm drivers reduce distortion whenever the volume is cranked up. 

If you then consider the excellent Dolby Atmos and the customisable EQ, you can get the balance just right. If you don’t fiddle with the settings, I found the bass to be somewhat overpowering during loud, busy moments. Yet, if you tweak things, this issue is almost unnoticeable. 

What impressed me, however, were the excellent highs, the powerful mids, and the balance of the low tones. Consequently, once you remove the minor bass issues, you get an excellent headset that competes with its peers. 

Usability.

The chunky but smooth dials help to adjust volume levels and game/chat balance. However, a lack of audio cues will be an irritant for some. Yet, once you get the settings right, you’ll adore every exceptional moment you experience. Alongside this, the free-to-download Dolby App helps you to get the most out of this device. 

The Victrix Gambit Wireless Gaming Headset can be used wired or wireless on both Xbox and PC. If you are an Esports enthusiast, this device is tournament-ready thanks to its in-line audio system. However, if you are a casual gamer, you’ll love the straightforward wireless dongle. Simply plug this into your console, turn on the headset, and away you go.

Build quality.

The audio quality is exceptional. Yet, I was more impressed by the hardy build quality. This spectacular device has plush earcups that are made from vegan leather. Additionally, the headband is comfortable and the earcups can be adjusted with ease. 

Alongside this, the dials and buttons are tactile and easy to locate. However, the use of a micro USB-B port was an odd choice. I’d have preferred if the manufacturer had used a modern USB-C alternative. Thankfully, though, the 16-hour-plus battery life ensures that this is a minor issue.

Everhood: Eternity Edition is one of those games that may have slipped your radar. This understated indie title doesn’t break the mould. However, its blend of genres and challenging mechanics make it stand out. Additionally, the retro aesthetic is somewhat unusual and this will appease retro lovers.

This old-school RPG was developed by Foreign Gnomes and published by Blitworks Games. Moreover, it utilises rhythm-based action and bullet hell mechanics. Accordingly, you must feel the beat, listen to every wonderful song, and dodge an insane plethora of deadly notes.

Everhood: Eternity Edition tells a bizarre story. 

I love the bizarre nature of retro games. The developers had the creative freedom to generate any plot, no matter how absurd it sounded. Consequently, you never knew what would happen. Furthermore, the characters were colourful, strange, and interesting. Thankfully, Everhood: Eternity Edition ticks each of these boxes.

You play the part of a wooden doll. This hapless individual has their arm stolen and this is the catalyst for a crazy adventure. En route, they encounter a range of weird people and creatures. These strange entities have music coursing through their veins, and they challenge you to a classic dance-off. However, this winner-takes-all mentality is deadly. If you win, your opponent is thwarted. Yet, if you lose, you’ll die, and you must respawn and try again.

Simple mechanics. 

Though much of the action was odd, the gameplay mechanics were straightforward to understand. Effectively, the story is punctuated by short, sharp rhythm-based battles that test your reactions. Additionally, you must stay calm and cool as musical notes hit you like a bullet from a gun. 

Each of these encounters is complemented by stunning and original music. Moreover, the claustrophobic arena enhances the difficulty. If you consider that each foe has a unique style and range of attacks, you have your work cut out.

Every fight asks you to navigate a tiny arena. This compact space is filled with neon blocks that must be avoided. Whether you dodge them, jump over them, or roll past them is your choice. However, if you get hit, you’ll become hurt and eventually die. Consequently, you must avoid every bullet hell projectile that is thrown your way. 

Everhood: Eternity Edition is gloriously old-school.

Though the action is brutally tough and undeniably strange, it is gloriously old-school. The grim colour palette and pixelated finish won’t appease everyone. However, I adored the simple approach and the dated aesthetic. Additionally, the odd character models enhanced the unnerving and unsavoury nature of this title. 

Alongside this, I cherished the original soundtrack. The varied music rarely hit a dud note. What’s more, the upbeat and aggressive tunes will get your heart pumping. As such, though it is occasionally unfair, you won’t mind revisiting every aggressive and OTT arena.

The controls could have been better. 

Though Everhood: Eternity Edition is easy to master, the controls should have been tighter. When a developer utilises bullet hell mechanics, you are in for a tough time. Yet, if the controls are also slow and clunky, it makes matters worse. Consequently, the frustrating controls make you scream with rage. 

I adored the maddening action and the brutal bullet hell mechanics. However, there were some game-breaking bugs that ruined the fun. Subsequently, this was annoying. Yet, despite the issues, it has replay value and longevity.

Everhood: Eternity Edition is a great indie title. 

Though I found some minor flaws, Everhood: Eternity Edition is a great indie title. Its retro approach and cruel gameplay will put some gamers off. Yet, if you can see past the blocky imagery, you’ll experience a weird and wonderful tale. Moreover, the action is rewarding. As such, I love this game and recommend buying it here! The amber-tinted lenses reduce harsh contrasting colours whilst protecting your vision from blue light and UV light. Moreover, the chunky frames are wonderfully masculine. As such, if you wish to stand out whilst you stream, then these are the glasses for you. Alongside this, if you love the Assassin’s Creed franchise, you’ll adore the fetching livery.

On top of this, these glasses are part of GUNNAR’s signature range. Accordingly, you’ll enjoy some extra layers that are omitted from the base-level models. As such, not only will you enjoy the patented lens design, but the G-Shield protection is anti-reflective and oleophobic (smudge-resistant). Therefore, your viewers will not get distracted during your streams, and they are easy to maintain.

Review: Prince of Persia The Lost Crown

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown is wonderfully old-school. However, its smooth animation, incredible level design, and intelligent Metroidvania mechanics are something to behold. Additionally, it will test your patience, skill, and staying power. As such, the further you progress, the tougher the action becomes. Yet, it is this challenging approach that makes this one of the best Metroidvania titles to be released in recent history.

This action-adventure title was developed by UBISOFT MONTPELLIER and published by UBISOFT. Moreover, it is a phenomenal 2D Metroidvania experience that tells a rich and interesting story. Alongside this, there are some beautiful combat elements and a healthy smattering of boss battles to overcome. Accordingly, this has all the right ingredients to be a modern classic!

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown utilises a glorious 2D playstyle.

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown takes a break from tradition.

Unlike its predecessors, Prince of Persia The Lost Crown moves away from a tried and tested storyline. Yes, the setting and atmosphere are familiar, but the story focuses on a new protagonist. What’s more, there is some profound lore and a tale of deceit that must be seen to be believed.

Instead of taking the role of the Prince, you control an ungodly hero called Sargon. This insanely skilled fighter is part of a badass group known as the Immortals. Each member of this team is deadly and talented, but Sargon takes things to a new level. Consequently, when a traitor kidnaps the Prince and takes them to Mount Qaf, things go south almost immediately. Unfortunately, the simple rescue mission is unnecessarily complex as the team must battle with time and the curse of the Simurgh.

Classic mechanics that are brilliantly executed.

The Metroidvania genre can drive you to distraction. Furthermore, it is easy to become lost with the constant back and forth. However, Prince of Persia The Lost Crown balances this element perfectly. Thanks to the excellent world map and the generous learning curve, you never feel out of your depth. Moreover, the incredibly challenging moments are reserved for the latter portion of the game. Subsequently, you will be comfortable with the action before you get out of your depth.

Unlocking new skills and abilities is par for the course. Yet, the blend of platforming moments and seamless combat pushes you forward on a fluid journey. Alongside this, the story is wonderfully executed and the different areas of the map are intriguing to explore. If you then consider the upgrade system and the amulets that improve your abilities, the developers keep you guessing throughout. 

Meet the Immortals.

Parkour and combat.

The additional skills and abilities are mind-blowing and impressive. Sargon evolves to become a parkour champion who can overcome the greatest and most challenging of obstacle courses. The developers realise some segments’ toughness and allow you to skip the toughest bits if you wish. However, I’d advise against this as the sense of achievement outweighs the frustration of failure.

If the platforming/parkour moments fail to test you, you may be pushed during the endless combat encounters. The gloriously colour-coded fights push you to parry, dodge, and master an array of combos. On top of this, you are expected to unleash monstrously powerful attacks to break your opponent’s defences. This was phenomenal, as the combat could have turned into mindless hack-and-slash action. Instead, it tests your reactions, patience, and skills throughout.

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown is aesthetically pleasing.

Visually, Prince of Persia The Lost Crown is distinctly old-school. The classic 2D Metroidvania approach has a wonderfully nostalgic edge. Yet, it is the modern polish, warm colour palette, and buttery smooth animation and combat that make this stand out. Furthermore, the excellent cinematic and the sense of magic and wonderment capture your imagination. Consequently, I found it tough to look away from this well-constructed title.

Alongside this, the audio was phenomenal. The soundtrack is unbelievably atmospheric and the sound effects are dramatic and exciting. Additionally, the acting drives the plot forward without being absurd, annoying, or OTT. However, somehow the developers have managed to capture the essence of the early titles whilst evolving the franchise. As such, this will impress newcomers and veterans alike.

Unbelievably impressive controls.

The colour-coded fighting and the excellent parkour/platforming moments make Prince of Persia The Lost Crown a joy to play. Additionally, the straightforward and well-conceived tutorial ensures that you never feel out of your depth. What’s more, the ability to skip the hardest challenges without being penalised ensures that it is user-friendly and enjoyable from beginning to end.

A playthrough will take you around 20 to 25 hours. However, exploring every nook and cranny will take much, much longer. Alongside this, there are plenty of ways to upgrade the hero to change your playstyle. Consequently, this has both longevity and replay value.

Prince of Persia The Lost Crown will blow you away.

I love how the developers have retained the soul and spirit of the original titles. Yet, they have evolved the gameplay well beyond my wildest dreams. Thankfully, Prince of Persia The Lost Crown is everything you want from a Metroidvania game. Moreover, it’ll test your skills, reactions, and logic as you explore a bizarre, curse-filled world. Accordingly, you’d be a fool not to try this, and I recommend that you buy it here! Can you complete your mission and save the young Prince? Explore Mount Oaf, defeat every foe, and learn new skills along the way.
