Review: Empty Shell

0

Rogue-like or Rogue-Lite

Empty Shell is a stylish rogue-lite horror game. Randomly generated maps that change each time you start a run are used in Empty Shell. Empty Shell is developed by CC Arts and it seems to be one of their first projects. Published by a Polish company, Hyperstrange, the game released on Nintendo Switch on 12th March 2024. The version reviewed here is the Switch version.

A rogue-lite is similar to a rogue-like, a rogue-like being a game where you explore, fight, and die. The player then repeats the run and no weapons, or key items that the player may have collected are saved for future runs. In other words, in rogue-like games, the player is often fighting enemies in dungeons, exploring, finding new paths to make progress, but then, when the player dies, they have to return to the start of the game with nothing that they’ve collected being saved. In a rogue-lite, you keep any key items that you found on previous runs.

In Empty Shell I noticed that some of the electronic devices that you find (that help to describe the game world) are kept on your next run. So, over time, you build up a library of lore documents. Each time you play the game, a character is given to the player and there is detailed biography information of the character that you are playing as. For example, I could be a 22-year-old named John Smith. The background to the game is that there is a group of people being held against their will and one at a time, they are sent into a facility in order to complete certain objectives. For the group, they hold fear of the facility as no one who goes there ever returns.

Horror

There is a clear Squid Game influence in the way that the characters are being held against their will, and sent to complete dangerous tasks. This is similar to the Netflix show, Squid Game. The game is definitely a horror title. There is little or no music as you explore the facility, but there are sound effects and generally an eerie sound design. I feel that the sound design isn’t perfect as the absence of a thematic soundtrack means that Empty Shell isn’t exactly a game that you can sit and chill to. However, it is appealing in other ways. The survivalist elements of being left in a facility swarming with monsters with only a shotgun, some shells, and a shovel does give you an adrenalin rush, and the gameplay is addictive and suitable for a playthrough every so often.

The combat with your melee weapon (which could be a shovel, or iron bar) is satisfying. You can almost feel the edge of the shovel crushing an enemy giant spider’s thorax. However, because the graphics are in black and white, and you see the action from a top down perspective, you can often hardly see what kind of creature you are fighting. There are spiders, zombies and other creepy monstrosities crawling towards the player at most times. It is wise to save ammunition for when you really need it and use the melee weapons on most enemies.

Gameplay

The game controls like a twin stick shooter. You hold the R button to engage you’re rifle or shotgun and then use the second analog stick to aim. It actually controls similarly to Diablo and other Diablo-like action RPGs. A game that I would say Empty Shell is very similar to, is Undead Storm and Undead Storm: Nightmare on DS and 3DS respectively. However, Empty Shell is many times more polished, has serious lore woven around it, and generally doesn’t feel like a budget game (unlike Undead Storm). Ironically, Empty Shell probably will fill the same gameplay niche as Undead Storm for most people who play it.

However, the genre of rogue-likes is prone to eliciting frustration in its players and Empty Shell is no exception. There is little feeling of progression when the player dies repeatedly and is sent back to the start of the game multiple times. Rogue-Likes aren’t my favourite genre of videogame so I’m sure that if you do like rogue-likes, you’ll enjoy Empty Shell because even though it’s not within my favourite genre, I enjoy playing it in bursts.

Conclusion

Overall, Empty Shell is an enjoyable Rogue-lite with a unique look and great horror elements. Reminiscent of past horror games, and with satisfying combat, Empty Shell is great to play in short bursts. While the gameplay loop may put some people off, if you are a horror fan, you could do a lot worse than Empty Shell. Furthermore, there is a wealth of lore hidden around the facility, and if you let the story ensnare you, you could get addicted to the experience of running through the facility narrowly escaping death at every turn.

Review: Pocket MP3 player

The Pocket MP3 player from Majority is an affordable and user-friendly device. Moreover, it has a beefy battery and it is lightweight. Accordingly, it is ideal for walkers, runners, and those who hate cumbersome tech. If you adore UK-designed goods, then this gadget will get your juices flowing. This compact music device was designed in the UK and the quality and expertise shows.

Alongside this, it has a whopping 16GB internal storage and is compatible with up to a 128GB external micro SD memory card. Accordingly, you’ll enjoy hours of non-stop music. If you then consider the vibrant HD screen, the built-in organiser, and the handy sports clip, this music player ticks many boxes.

What’s in the box of the Pocket MP3 player?

  • The packaging is compact and eye-catching. What’s more, it is recyclable and informative.
  • The Pocket MP3 player is tiny! This miniature device looks great and is easy to handle. Moreover, the tactile buttons ensure that it is simple to use.
  • Charge the battery with the small USB cable.
  • Wired headphones create a hassle-free connection.
  • Learn the fundamentals with the user manual.

Technical aspects.

The 300 mAh battery delivers an impressive 34 hours of music. Furthermore, 30 minutes of charge gives you 5 hours of playtime. As such, you rarely run out of juice. However, the battery life is reduced if you utilise the Bluetooth functionality. I was happy with the lower power capacity as the convenience of wireless audio outweighs the wired alternative. Yet, if you are happy with wired earphones, the supplied pair are more than suitable. The Bluetooth 5.0 connection is strong, stable, and has a low power usage. Consequently, it is ideal if you wish to workout or walk for long periods.

Alongside this, it is straightforward to add music to the Pocket MP3 player. Simply plug the device into your PC or laptop and transfer the files. Alternatively, load them onto your memory card and away you go. Either way, you are up and running in no time and I loved its no-frills approach. This MP3 player supports an array of file modes and this versatility was appreciated. Whether you have WAV, MP3, OGG, or APE, it matters not.

Usability.

Where the Pocket MP3 player excels is its usability. The vibrant HD screen and clean UI were great to look at. Additionally, navigating each section was a cinch thanks to the tactile buttons. Once your music is loaded onto the device, you can organise it into playlists or simply allow it to select a tune for you. This rudimentary design makes this an ideal tool for technophobes. Subsequently, you can ask a tech-savvy friend to get your music sorted while you enjoy the benefits.

If this wasn’t enough, there is a calendar, stopwatch, and voice recorder. These minor elements may not be to everyone’s taste, but they are handy. Moreover, they are simple to use and easy to look at.

Build quality.

This tiny device only weighs 33g. This lightweight design makes the Pocket MP3 player one of the lightest audio devices I’ve handled. Moreover, it is so small that it is barely noticeable when you wear it on your top or place it in your pocket. The monochromatic casing is made from hardened plastic and this ensures a robust finish. On top of this, the buttons are responsive, and the lock switch is easy to operate. Furthermore, the 3.5mm audio jack is sturdy. The provided headphones won’t blow you away, but they are suitable, refined, and pleasant enough.

The HD screen is a joy to navigate, and it is neither too bright nor dull. I had no issues using this in blazing sunshine nor was it problematic during low light. As such, this is the ideal tool if you like to work out at random times. The USB-C port is well-positioned, and I experienced no problems when connecting the cable. Finally, the sports clip is robust, and it offers enough pressure that the device never moves.

Is the Pocket MP3 player worth it?

Available for under £30, the Pocket MP3 player impressed me. It has a great battery life, quick charging, stable Bluetooth, and it is easy to use. Moreover, it is robust and perfect for walkers and sports people. Consequently, if you wish to be free from your phone, but still have the option to listen to some tunes, then this is the product for you. Accordingly, I love it and I recommend buying it here!

A Closer Look

Final Thoughts

If you have ever thought how useful it might be to have a second monitor but didn’t have the room, the DUEX PLUS Portable Laptop Monitor is definitely for you.

Setting up the monitor was very quick and easy – place the magnetic plates toward the monitor side and remove the stickers, center the screen against the back of the laptop, open the laptop and slide the monitor out and swivel the screen to the correct viewing angle, then connect the cable – that’s it! The laptop works with either a USB-C or a USB-A connection.

You can then setup the screens however you want them either in Windows or on a Mac, it even works with a Nintendo Switch!

The quality of the screen is excellent and it is very lightweight (only 1.3 lbs) making it very portable (which after all is the whole point of getting it). There is a 270 degree viewing angle so you should be able to find that perfect position for wherever you are. You can use the monitor in either portrait or landscape mode and even adjust the brightness too.

The whole process is simple and I found myself wondering how I ever managed to get by without that second screen. If you have ever thought that a second screen would be useful but didn’t have the room or wanted or needed it to be portable, then take a look at the DUEX PLUS Portable Laptop Monitor – you won’t be disappointed.

Review: Skaramazuzu

A soothing story driven fetch quest.

Skaramazuzu is a rather interesting project. The premise is rather basic , you wake up with no recollection of who or where you are. The art style even though quite simple is very clear, from the character you can interact with to all the objects in the over all world that can be used or picked up. Following in the footsteps of its art direction , the gameplay is also very simple. The games mechanics only require you to walk and talk to various character who are in possession of some item that you will need, and since they never have the need for said item themselves you are free to grab it off them. For a price. The entire game is you finding out more about the situation you found yourself in by chatting away to certain creatures in this ‘limbo’, and then fetching something for them so that they may give you an item that you were tasked to fetch for someone else.

Other than these characters and creatures you will also find yourself interacting with items, keyholes and rotating mechanisms in order to find 4 orbs spread around the games world in order to finally learn exactly what and who you are.

I will not mention anything about the story as the game is rather short, I have completed it within 3 hours or so. it is definitely a nice experience if this is the sort of game you are into. To me the walking back and forth and talking with the same no voice acted characters to see if there’s something I missed was tedious, but definitely rewarding when my brain finally clicked and I solved the puzzle / riddle. The game is sitting at $10.59 which in my opinion isn’t worth it for a 3 hour experience with no replay-ability factor but that may be due to me not being a fan of such games. With that in mind I still commend the game for what it is. A story focused puzzle experience, and this it does pretty well.

Review: The DioField Chronicle

0

Having every signature feature of a typical Square Enix fantasy RPG: a world-devouring invasion powered by the Empire, precious crystal which is the source of all magic and a band of gathered heroes that comes from all different places, The DioField Chronicle is born with great expectations and I almost could not wait to step on another Final-Fantasy-Style adventure with some more tacticle touches when I first set my eyes on it.

Surprisingly, TDFC is not your boring and cliche tactical rpg where you have to dully select tiles for all your troops to move to, wait for their turn to attack and relentlessly calculate the consequences of your every action. Instead, SE has brought its notoriously famous real-time battle system. Amphibious assault? Pincer Maneuver? Or perhaps feint your opponent with a line of shield walls while your assassins take out their leaders? TDFC is such a tactical game with untold flexibility and freedom where you can order your troops to do almost everything while still remaining strategically challenging.

Now the tower of expectations is piling up higher and higher: a brillaint fantasy journey filled with courage and tears while controlling your heros to defeat their enemies in all kinds of imaginitive and clever ways, TDFC seems to have it all! What could go wrong, right?

The Storytelling that missed the Story

Trapped in the middle, quite literally and geopolitically, of a stalemate between the powerful empire of the east dreaming of a world-conquering westward expansion and the uncompromising alliance of the west, the Island Diofield is known to be rich with the only power source of magic: Jade. Although far from being an original story, the setting embodies unlimited potentials and I was very intrigued to see how the story would unfold.

Then I spend the next three hours within the game as a member of a mercenary group residing on Diofield Island with no knowledge whatsoever of what is going on in the outside world, running errands. There were no particular reasons that the game offered me, as in why should I care about what I am doing: Instead of a bad plot, TDFC offered me no plot. I am either running to a mining site to kill undeads defending a noble house from bandits simply because I was asked to.

The only thing I knew less than the storyline of TDFC is its characters. Start with an initial group of three and then soon to a group of five, even with five hours into the game, most of them are still mere collections of tags and a pretty face rather than a real person to me. I have no insight of who they are, and what they want or why they decide to stick together. In the second battle after the tutorial, I encountered a sharpshooter named Icarion who has always worked alone on a mission to destroy a bandit camp. After the mission, without any clear indication of why, Icarion asks to join the mercenary group and fight alongside me.

In retrospect of the first few hours of the game, it felt like the game just wanted to rush over the boring prologue of world-building or character introduction and instead drag me into as many battles as it can. I have seen similar tricks being done in other games like Monster Hunters, but even so, a basic story that at least allows on some level a connection between gamers and the game could only help not hurt.

The Tacticle Gameplay that missed the Tactics

The real-time battle system is a real revolutionary design. In TDFC the gamer controls their heros on different maps to fight different enemies in an overhead view, just like every other tactical games. However, TDFC eliminated all the tiring and boring feature like a turn-based battle or tile limited movement and instead offered complete control for the heros at all times, which would satisfy evne the most spontaneous gamer, like me. The pros and cons battles without rests, but unrefutablhy the battles in TDFC is certainly more realistic. More importantly, TDFC appears to have fully overcome the biggest challenge typical tactical games would face: the loss of gamer’s interest through the ridiculously long period for them to master all the details of the battle system.

But very soon into the game, it becomes clear the TDFC has little more to offer than what first appears to have. TDFC is not Dynasty Warriors which requires no brain at all to enjoy, but the battle system is shallow enough for there to be almost no room for the presence of tactics. The game could be hard, but only through the accumulation of enemy numbers; it could be challenging, but only in terms of how to satisfy the 4-minute time limit required by a perfect mission. Only seldom have I felt the satisfaction of beating my enemy with carefully planned movement, scrutinized troops positioning and calculated resource/mana management, which is ironically the biggest attraction of a tactical game.

Conclusion

The DioField Chronicle is not without its perks. Its map designs are as usual for a SE fantasy rpg, immersive and diverse, which truly allowed me to believe that one second I may be fighting on the central street downtown and the next second I am feeling the breath of a sleeping volcano. I criticized the lack of story and tactics, yet undeniably lowering the bar and canceling the sometimes obnoxious world-explaining narration does open the game to a wider audience in this hasty time where patience is seldom found.

In the end when I decided to stop playing TDFC, the only feeling I had was regret. Perhaps the story was going to truly unfold in a magnificent way later, or maybe there will a new feature introduced that will make the battle difficult and riveting, but unfortunately, the game has lost me way before it had a chance to introduce them.

Review: Planetiles

0

Planetiles is a serene city builder simulator accompanies with roguelike element. It’s developed and published by MythicOwl.

Craft Your World

Planetiles offers players to craft their world on a selected planet. Players play as a creator to build a natural habitats. Player is provided different level difficulty based on the planet they choose. Player will be introduced the puzzle system and quest objective. The gameplay is works like a city building simulator in mix with fill in gap puzzle. Player’s ultimate objective is fill in the map with no gap and achieve the target points to unlock the technology.

Puzzle Land Building

As the game begins, players will jump into tutorial session. A planet is waiting for player to decorates with lands and structures. Player may starts build an island then expands across the map with a variety kinds of terrains. Player can fill the gaps with rain-forest, sand, mountains, fields, etc. Once condition met, a construct will erects on the terrain. Each terrains may produce different kind of structures. Besides that, fill in the gaps following the quest’s instruction will complete the quest and gains extra point.

Fill the Gap

Here’s the main mechanism of the game. Players’ challenge is fill in the gap by building the terrains with specific number of block. Also, player can shuffle the chunk of blocks once condition met. Thus, player has to arrange the blocks to fill in the gap in a limited space. Once conditions met, player can choose a terrain to evolve. Player may discovers many kind of structures through the planting the tiles. The evolution depends on player. However, there’s also risk in fill in the gap. Once certain conditions met, player will be offered an upgrade comes along with a cataclysm. The cataclysm will affect the map randomly and might devastate the following progress.

Natural Cataclysm

During the selecting the planet difficulty, the planet’s information will shows the forecasted cataclysms. The cataclysms are set according to the difficulty. Once condition is met, it will be triggered along side with the upgrade. Player has to equip the risk management technology to counter or lower the damage it causes. There are many kinds of cataclysm and all are meant to destroy the tiles and structures player has built. Thus, player has to be careful in picking the technology equipment in order prepare the incoming disasters.

Mind-Puzzling Relaxation

As I start playing the game, its engaging experience brings surprise to me. Do not be fooled by its casual-like appearance as it does requires some thinking to do. It’s wrong to think planting down the tiles without concerning the consequences will fills in all the gap. In my humble opinion, it’s not just about fill in the gap. It’s about trying my best in evolving the terrains into populated lands and working my best to counter the cataclysms with my technology. In overall, I recommend to give this game a try if players want to try a beginner level city building simulator genre.

Review: Trinity Fusion

Trinity Fusion takes some well-trodden mechanics and makes them its own. Furthermore, its combination of weapons, perks, and enemies keeps you on your toes throughout. On top of this, it can be exceptionally challenging and this will appease sadomasochistic gamers. Accordingly, it’ll tick plenty of boxes for lots of people.

This rogue-like Metroidvania title was developed and published by Angry Mob Games. Moreover, it has Hack ‘n Slash elements, a swathe of platforming moments, and the defining cruelty of a Souls-like. Consequently, this isn’t a game for the faint of heart. If you can somehow break the learning curve and master the core mechanics, you experience an exceptional game that breaks the mould.

Trinity Fusion wants you to end it all!

Who’d have thought that death and destruction could spark new life? Well, that is exactly what is required in Trinity Fusion. Parallel universes are breaking down and the multiverse is dying. Subsequently, the end is nigh and that’s a worrying thought. However, 3 characters in 3 parallel existences must overcome an array of problems and monsters to save the day.

The story is probably the least original element of this title. Even then, it’s not that bad. Instead, I rolled with the punches and enjoyed the madness that unfolded. As each character has a blend of skills that differs from its parallel self, I focused on this rather than the plot loopholes. Additionally, each vast level distracts you as you fight waves of enemies and try to survive.

Plenty of variety.

I was impressed by the volume of weapons and perks on offer. As you explore each level, you collect 2 different currencies. Moreover, there are weapons to find and a character progression system to exploit. Each combination of ridiculous weapons and crazy perks alters your approach. If you then consider each protagonist’s strengths and weaknesses, plenty of variety is on offer.

Death and failure are all par for the course. Moreover, the challenging bosses and excellent combat take some beating and getting used to. On top of this, losing your way during each sprawling stage was familiar ground for this genre. I adored the blend of unusual levels and the sneaky bonus areas that tested you further. Furthermore, the fear of failure and loss adds a dramatic layer that makes Trinity Fusion uncomfortable but rewarding to play.

Trinity Fusion is polished but old-school.

2D side-scrolling games will always be popular. Yet, this distinctly old-school approach may seem wasted on modern machines. Though this was reminiscent of the early 16-bit era, I loved the vibrant colour palette and clean lines. The polished finish is extended to the smooth animation and the lush character models. The variety of monsters and the superb landscapes are phenomenal to observe.

The audio is just as impressive. The combination of a daunting soundtrack and harsh sound effects was perfect. Moreover, though the acting was occasionally cheesy, it worked well with the theme and story. Consequently, the punchy audio complements the challenging but high-energy action.

Excellent controls.

The simple-to-understand layout and timely tutorial were great. Additionally, the responsive inputs ensure that Trinity Fusion is easy to play. Unfortunately, it is a tough game to master, but this simply pushes you to try harder.

The developers have been generous with the difficulty settings and additional game modes. Furthermore, the challenging action and varied gameplay keep you returning for more. Therefore, this has both longevity and replay value.

Trinity Fusion is a great indie title.

Standing out from your peers is not easy. Yet, Trinity Fusion smashes its opponents and wins the race. This indie title plays with much-loved mechanics and makes them its own. Moreover, the action is a fantastic blend of difficulty and reward. As such, I love it and I recommend buying it here! Becoming a hero is never easy. Stay alive, tackle every foe, and destroy the multiverse.

Review: MLB The Show 24

One of the most lovely things about video games is that even if you are not a gamer, you can always find a game that attracts you, because there are many games based on movies, series, books and sports, and easily attract the fans of these industries to the video games, so that they buy the new version every year and even buy new consoles to play the newer and more optimized versions, over time, they become interested in other games and the number of gamers increases.

The first game of the MLB: The Show franchise, which was developed by San Diego studio, was released in 2006, and since then a new version has been released every year, MLB: The Show quickly became very popular and is currently the most famous baseball simulator, and it is welcomed by baseball fans every year.

Diamond dynasty: you build your team and you can play in single player and multiplayer modes, single player modes have four different modes: mini seasons, conquest, showdown and play vs cpu, and multiplayer modes have five modes: ranked, battle royale, events, play vs friends and casual, by playing in diamond dynasty you can get packs that contain players, uniforms and team equipment and you can strengthen your team. Players and other items that you get by opening the pack can be sold and by selling them you get stubs, by selling quickly you get the amount determined by the game itself, but you can sell the item yourself at your wnted price in the marketplace. These stubs are used to buy stronger players or more packs and items in the marketplace.

The gameplay is smooth and it is a complete baseball simulator, and with the variety of game modes, it prevents the gameplay from becoming repetitive.

VISUALS

Visually, it is not bad at all, but for a game that releases a new version every year, and its maps are not very different from each other, the quality of the sand and grass textures is not acceptable, and the facials of the players could be better.

Performance and resolution are stable and have no problems.

REMOTE PLAY

After experiencing the first two hours, I felt that this game can be very enjoyable on the PS remote play and I was completely right, you don’t need to press different buttons at the same time, so it can easily be played with touch controls. When you are lying down, you can easily enjoy the game with your phone.

MLB The Show Companion App

With the MLB the show companion app, you have access to the market and packs shop and you can make your purchases with your phone, the face scan feature helps you put your face on the character you create in the road to the show game mode. You can see your team’s performance or get news about the game.

CONCLUSION

MLB The Show 24 is a great baseball simulator that has a very enjoyable gameplay that does not have annoying bugs and can entertain you for a long time with its various game modes.

Visually it’s just fine but it could have been better.
