Events: MCM X EGX

0

MCM X EGX has been a long time coming! This new hybrid event has hit the ExCel centre and I couldn’t wait to get into the action. The buzz of the crowd and the hype surrounding new games always get me excited. Consequently, I hoped that this refreshed approach would bring life and energy to a UK eventing staple.

News of games and attendees has been thin on the ground. Accordingly, I went into the event somewhat unaware of the manufacturers and publishers I’d be meeting. However, this mattered not. I knew that there would be 100s of interesting booths and plenty of people to chat to. Luckily, this was the case and this article will point out my favourite encounters.

Where this new combo event falls short is its lack of games. Subsequently, if you are attending and hoping to get your hands on plenty of interesting indie titles, you will be left wanting. However, if you love a good time, high-energy vibes, and Manga/Anime, you will find enough to keep you entertained throughout.

What impressed me during MCM X EGX?

SureFire Gaming.

This affordable gaming peripheral brand is the ideal choice if you want to kit out your gaming PC or console rig. They offer a vast range of RGB-inspired goods and I was impressed by the build quality and the pricing. Moreover, the staff were happy to discuss the technical aspects of each product whilst listening to your everyday needs. As such, if you want something that looks and feels great but won’t upset your bank manager, then this is the brand for you.

ModRetro Chromatic.

I love retro gaming because of its dated appeal and striking gameplay. Accordingly, when a manufacturer builds a console that improves this experience, I can’t wait to get my hands on that device. This console not only looks phenomenal, but its eye-catching screen delivers perfect Game Boy colours. Additionally, it works with original Game Boy cartridges for that genuine nostalgic feeling. James Refelian will be covering this product in more detail.

Let your creativity go wild.

LEGO.

Everyone loves LEGO! Big or small, simple or complex, there is a build that will match your needs. Luckily, LEGO blew it out of the water with their free llama and Yoshi building kits and stunning models. On top of this, there were some classic games and a sneak preview of the LEGO Horizon Adventures. This game was fun, simple, and eye-wateringly colourful. As such, this is the ideal option for kids and lovers of the franchise.

Sylvanian Families.

If you follow my reviews, you’ll know I have 3 young girls. Subsequently, Barbie and the Sylvanian Families take pride of place among the toys. When I saw the stall advertising an army of different families and some adorable dioramas, I couldn’t help but smile. My mind wandered off to Christmas and I could see how every family and accessory would please my girls. Consequently, if you are in the same position as me, you may want to give this stall a visit.

Time to get your fantasy on.

Dungeons and Dragons.

MCM X EGX focuses heavily on board games and a fantasy edge. As such, it didn’t surprise me that Dungeons and Dragons (on its 50th anniversary) has a massive influence here. There are vast gaming areas reserved for would-be heroes. What’s more, there is a sneak peek at the upcoming DM’s handbook (this can be purchased on-site). This latest book release comes off the back of the success of the Player’s Handbook. I will be reviewing both of these items so keep your eyes open for those articles.

If you have never played D&D or you have misconceived ideas about it, then I suggest spending a large chunk of your time with the passionate and well-informed staff. You’ll leave this booth with a newfound appreciation for this classic adventure experience.

Time for gaming.

Blue Prince.

RAW FURY is a publisher who rarely lets people down. Their games are fantastic and they delivered another impressive array of titles. My favourite one was Blue Prince! This unusual but visually impressive game captured my imagination. Furthermore, there is a sense of drama, luck, and planning. What’s more, the acting was great and the eye for detail was second to none. Though this game hasn’t got a release date, I suggest adding it to your wish list.

PolterGuys.

I always find an unusual indie game that may be overlooked. PolterGuys is a fun and competitive multiplayer experience. A group of 4 individuals must compete with one another as they escape the path of the rampaging spectre. There are special items to collect and the ability to boost your speed to stay ahead of the game. However, special items can be a game-changer and staying alert is a must in this fun and silly casual title.

MCM X EGX scratches an itch.

Sadly, EGX has been on the decline since Covid. The industry has changed and publishers, developers, and gamers have had to roll with the punches. I hoped this hybrid event would spark life into the gaming element, but it is too compact to stand out from its comic book partner. Accordingly, though there is plenty to see and do, you may feel deflated if you have come just for the gaming. However, if you love to mingle and want a great day out with like-minded individuals, this is the event for you.

Your Guide To GTA Casino Missions

0

Source: https://unsplash.com/photos/person-sitting-on-gaming-chair-while-playing-video-game-Mf23RF8xArY

The GTA Casino was a big hit when it was first introduced in 2019, offering a fully customizable penthouse apartment as well as gaming opportunities. The Diamond Casino & Resort update also added several missions that were specific to the casino. They can come with big rewards, can now be completed solo, and are considered some of the most enjoyable in the game.

Similarly, online platforms like Betblast casino provide players with a diverse range of gaming options, bringing the excitement of high-stakes gambling to a digital audience.

Casino Gambling Restrictions

The Diamond Casino offers gaming opportunities for a lot of GTA Online players, but not all. Rockstar has disabled gambling for players who live in countries with strict anti-gambling laws. Some players get around this ban by using a VPN and choosing a server in a country with no restrictions.

While this works in The Diamond Casino, using a VPN won’t help in real online casinos if your access is restricted by your participation in the Gamstop service. However, Techopedia’s experts say there are a lot of casinos that operate outside this service. According to tech writer Kane Pepi, using cryptocurrency and joining one of these casinos enables restricted players to circumvent these restrictions.

The GTA Casino

While you won’t win real money at The Diamond Casino, you can win a ton of in-game money, as long as gambling is enabled in your area. The casino was introduced in 2019 as part of The Diamond Casino & Resort update and it offers games like poker, blackjack, roulette, and slot machines for lucky players. It also has a host of online missions for players to participate in.

Start Casino Missions

To start casino missions, players need to first obtain a VIP membership for the casino and purchase a Master Penthouse. As such, it costs at least $1.5 million to start playing the missions. Once you’ve met these requirements, you will need to head to the staff-only area to choose which of the missions you want to participate in.

Rewards

Rewards range from $50,000 to $100,000, although the exact amount you earn depends on various factors including the order you complete them in. Below, we highlight the available missions and have included the rewards if you complete them in the order set out. Completing missions for a second or subsequent time will see the rewards drop.

As you can see, the individual mission rewards aren’t enough to reimburse you for the cost of the Penthouse, but you do get to keep your swanky new apartment even when you’ve finished all six missions. And, if you finish the missions in the right order, you get an additional half a million dollars and there is a handful of additional bonuses that can take the prizes to more than a million dollars and you get an armored vehicle to keep. These additional bonuses are:

  • $50,000 if you don’t lose a life during the missions
  • $100,000 if you play as a crew member
  • $100,000 and the Paragon R vehicle if you are the crew leader during all missions
  • $500,000 for completing the missions in the correct order, as set out below

When the missions were first launched, they had to be completed in parties of two to four players. Since the Los Santos Drug Wars update, they can be played solo, although this will make the missions a much more challenging affair.

The Missions

To get all the rewards on offer, players will have to play through the missions at least twice. This enables them to play as a crew member and the crew leader. To get the biggest possible reward, the missions should be completed in the following order.

Loose Cheng

Loose Cheng is the first mission you should tackle and rewards $50,000 for its successful completion. In this mission, you are tasked with rescuing Tao Cheng from a derelict motel.

Housekeeping

Housekeeping rewards you with $50,000 and is the next mission to take in order. Here, you need to help the casino’s head of security deal with troublemakers on the casino floor.

Strong Arm Tactics

The third mission is Strong Arm Tactics, which rewards players with $50,000 and sees The Diamond Casino management team enter into possible negotiations with the Duggan Investment Trust over a possible buyout. It is definitely an attempt at a hostile takeover.

Play To Win

Another $50,000 is rewarded for Play To Win, the fourth mission in the series. In this mission, you seek revenge on the Duggan family by taking out their profitable oil ventures.

Bad Beat

Bad Beat is the penultimate mission to take, and offers a $50,000 reward. In this mission, players take on Thornton Avery’s uncle, Avery. Avery’s mercenaries rappel onto the roof just as Thornton issues a warning in a bid to make peace.

Cashing Out

Cashing Out is the final mission in the series. It rewards $100,000 for successful completion and, in it, players finally confront and take on Avery Duggan. The fight takes place at Avery’s ranch where players will be met by a lot more of Avery’s mercenaries.

Review: Barbie Project Friendship

Growing up I was into Action Man and other boy toys from the 80s. Accordingly, Barbie wasn’t on my agenda. However, roll on nearly 40 years and my house is filled with every Barbie you can imagine. As such, when Barbie Project Friendship was announced, my 3 girls squealed with delight! Their excitement was palatable, and my look of horror must have been amusing. Yet, here we are, as I take a deep dive into the moralistic and high-energy world of plastic dolls.

This 3D adventure title was developed by Casual Brothers Ltd and published by Outright Games. Moreover, it is a single-player and cooperative title that is brimming with cheesy one-liners, love, and an uncomfortable sense of doing the right thing. This vibrant and simple game is aimed at a younger audience. Consequently, the action is rudimentary and adults will frown repeatedly, What’s more, the simple fetch quests and mountains of basic quick-time events will not challenge experienced gamers. Yet, this matters not as my kids were fascinated by the straightforward design and the colourful world.

Barbie Project Friendship is sickly sweet.

Call me cynical, but I don’t believe that the world can be improved by love, friendship, and turning the other cheek. Yet, these points are the foundation of Barbie Project Friendship. Subsequently, it is so sickly sweet that it is almost vomit-inducing. This feel-good nature runs through every aspect of the game. However, it is the story and the characters that are overflowing with pleasantries and a gravity-defying moral compass.

The Barbie’s are on a trip down memory lane. As they head to a beloved Malibu landmark, the Malibu Waves Community Center, they realise things are wrong. This once beautiful place is rundown and someone threatens to shut it down for good. But these enthusiastic girls will not let a little thing like hard work put them off. No, instead, they ask for the help of their friends as they reopen the beach, the workshop, the camping area, the arcade, and the Amphitheatre.

A grand story but simple ideas.

Though the story and the atmosphere are larger than life, the mechanics and core ideas are rudimentary. The gameplay revolves around plenty of fetch quests and some simple quick-time events. On top of this, there are some interesting “Overcooked” style minigames and some rhythm-based action to keep you entertained. Each of these ideas was simple by design and this was ideal for their intended audience.

Thankfully, the excellent tutorials explained every element. Consequently, your kids can play this with little guidance. However, the lack of guidance for each core mission was frustrating. Running around every small area trying to find a person or item was frustrating. Somehow my kids never got tired of the searching and I watched on as they wandered aimlessly across each area.

The basic connecting missions progressed the story nicely. Additionally, the introduction of new characters kept the action from becoming boring. As such, the game flows at a nice pace and though it wasn’t deep or challenging, it kept my kids entertained throughout.

Barbie Project Friendship lacks polish.

Barbie Project Friendship is colourful and it has some varied stage design. Yet, it lacks polish and the character models were a little plain to look at. On top of this, the animation wasn’t great and I noticed some visual glitches. Thankfully, none of these things impacted the gameplay and my kids didn’t notice, nor were they bothered by the shortcomings.

The audio was like nails down a chalkboard. Every soundbite and repeated phrase made me bite my lip. I don’t understand why the Barbies sighed when they wanted to undertake each task. Yet, they insisted on sounding annoyed even though they were happy. With this strange design quirk to one side, the music is upbeat and the story is well-delivered. Though it wasn’t my cup of tea, it works well with the theme.

Kids will master this immediately.

The developer has done a great job with their controls. Every task is well explained and the gameplay flows nicely as a consequence. Moreover, the tutorials explain what is required and the responsive inputs keep you moving in the right direction. My only complaint is a lack of sprint functionality. Sadly, the protagonist saunters everywhere and this drove me nuts.

Replay value is at rock bottom. Barbie Project Friendship has a few collectables to find and some costumes and decorative items to unlock. However, once you have done this and you have completed every mission, there are limited reasons to return. Thankfully, you can come back to play the mini-games if you wish, and I’m sure my girls will do this repeatedly.

Barbie Project Friendship is ideal for doll-loving children.

If your child loves Barbie or a colourful and high-energy world, they will cherish this game. The simple approach was great for younger gamers and there is nothing offensive in sight. The lack of bad language and violence was refreshing and I appreciated the simple controls and thorough tutorials. Accordingly, though it drove me mad, my girls adored every moment. Therefore, I recommend buying it here! Can you save this beloved Malibu landmark? Explore the community centre, ask for help, and fight against all odds.

Review: Starship Troopers: Extermination

Starship Troopers: Extermination didn’t wow me like I expected it to. I’ve dabbled with Helldivers 2 and I hoped that this would hit those dizzying heights. As it is, there are plenty of flawed moments that may leave you feeling frustrated. However, if you don’t compare it to its well-received counterpart, there are plenty of elements to enjoy. Moreover, if you grab some like-minded friends, you will find plenty of fun mechanics that keep you coming back for more.

This FPS was developed by Offworld Industries Ltd and published by Knights Peak. Moreover, it is a single-player and online cooperative multiplayer affair. As such, this can be enjoyed by a large and varied audience. I tried both modes and I have to say that the single-player campaign is laughable at best. Unfortunately, it doesn’t shine and it feels like an afterthought. The same can be said for the Galactic Front live-service campaign (more on this later). Thankfully, the multiplayer action is great fun and there are genuine dramatic and challenging moments that get under your skin.

Starship Troopers: Extermination doesn’t read the room.

The Starship Troopers franchise is a satirical beast that is loaded with action elements. It works so well because the balance between the 2 layers is perfectly considered. If one was slightly off, the films would have been awful and they’d have probably flopped. Unfortunately, Starship Troopers: Extermination misses the satirical element altogether. This was a shame as I’d have loved the story and the cinematic cutscenes to grab the theme by the balls. Disappointingly, this didn’t happen and the developer has allowed the hellish action to sit at the fore.

You must join the Deep Space Vanguard as they engage the menacing bug threat. The hordes of arachnids swarm each battlefield as the Mobile Infantry tries to complete its goal. The fast-paced and often fluid gameplay is challenging to keep on top of. However, there are handy mission guides and your teammates to turn to if things go south.

Starship Troopers: Extermination: 16-player multiplayer madness.

The core game mode for Starship Troopers: Extermination is the 4 squad 16-player online matches. These brutal encounters ask you to complete an array of missions whilst tackling every wave of bugs. The game normally culminates in a base-building exercise that is followed by a horde-based encounter. If you survive this, you must make it to the escape ship and get the hell off the planet.

Each of these elements sounds fantastic by themselves, but when you put them together, they can be challenging to overcome. The base building is reasonably intuitive and working together with 15 strangers was oddly rewarding. As time ticks away, you must place walls, ammo, guns, auto-turrets, and much more. If you complete your base in time, you can stand guard and tackle wave after wave of horrible space bugs. Yet, if you haven’t been quick enough, you’ll have to fight off the horde whilst you establish a safe perimeter.

Once you survive the intense battle, you must sprint to the awaiting escape ship. This simple element was one of my favourite features. Though it shouldn’t have been every man/woman for themselves, it often was. If you are heroic, you may stop to help fallen comrades. However, this leaves you vulnerable and I’m not sure they’ll return the favour. I know they won’t as I was left to bleed out on many occasions.

Choose your warrior.

In typical genre fashion, there are plenty of classes to choose from. Do you wish to snipe and stay out of the battle or are you a lover of flames and risking your life? Either way, there are plenty of options available. You’ll want to understand how your class complements another when you team up with strangers. After all, if you are all hiding in the shadows with a sniper rifle, your teammates will need your support.

Where Starship Troopers: Extermination excels is its dynamic battlefields and the remains of every bug you thwart. This was spectacular as the battlefield was an ever-evolving threat that changes the way you think. As you slay the bugs, their bodies pile high like a gruesome trophy. This was splendid to look at but caused no end of problems. If the bodies pile up against your walls, the bugs can use them as a ghastly ramp to attack you. Alternatively, you can become trapped within a dead bug prison and this affects your ability to fight and your ability to stay alive.

Luckily, you can destroy the bug corpses to clear a path. This was such a great mechanic as the world felt truly alive. What’s more, you may choose to keep each bug corpse as a reminder of your success. Either way, it is truly gruesome and I love the twisted sci-fi edge.

The shortcomings.

The recently added single-player campaign is god-awful. The missions are terrible and the settings aren’t much better. Moreover, the AI is so stupid that I’d have been better off without them. I know most people will buy Starship Troopers: Extermination for the online action, but people still want a great single-player campaign. Unfortunately, the developers have not delivered on this aspect, and that was a shame.

The Galactic Front clan-focused gameplay was equally poor. This afterthought option should have been great fun and challenging. However, it’s very lacklustre and I wasn’t inspired to push it to its limits. Additionally, if you are a casual player, you don’t get a sense of urgency or reward as you complete each unified mission.

Starship Troopers: Extermination could do with some polish.

Each mission feels massive. It doesn’t matter if you are tackling a classic base-building exercise or you are running around gathering resources. The environments are varied and moving between waves of bugs was enjoyable. On the other hand, you can sit in your base and tackle the oncoming bug army. Both are valid contributions and you get equal enjoyment from either approach.

What wasn’t so good, was the lack of polish. The textures feel off and some of the landmarks and environments felt flat. Though you don’t get much time to examine the world in great detail, it should have looked much better. Additionally, the animation felt janky and the bug movement wasn’t as smooth as I hoped.

The audio fares a little better as the soundtrack is loud and aggressive. Moreover, the voiceover work is good and each mission is well-explained. Alongside this, the sound effects are suitable and each bug will make your skin crawl. I had to turn the volume on my headset down as the constant banging, shooting, and noise made my ears ring. However, you will adore the uncomfortably loud audio if you like to be semi-deaf after each round.

Decent controls.

The control system works well with a gamepad. It has an intelligent controller layout that is simple to understand and master. First, Starship Troopers: Extermination pushes you into a tutorial mode that explains combat and base building. This was necessary and I didn’t feel that the 20-minute quest was a waste or outstayed its welcome.

The afterthought single-player campaign and guild missions were a letdown. The developer needs to rework these elements to enhance replay value and longevity. Though I enjoyed the multiplayer campaign, I’m not sure it would grab my attention forever. As such, it risks alienating its audience unless new content is added.

Starship Troopers: Extermination was fun but flawed.

Starship Troopers: Extermination is a fun multiplayer experience. Whether you play this with friends or strangers, you will enjoy the fast-paced action and the never-ending bug waves. However, it isn’t as polished as expected and the gameplay is flawed. Furthermore, there isn’t enough depth in its current state. Accordingly, I’m on the fence. Though I can see it losing its appeal quickly, I’m still enjoying it and recommend buying it here! Can you defeat the filthy bugs? Pick your class, find a squad, and wipe out the bug menace.

Review: The Smurfs: Dreams

The Smurfs: Dreams continues my obsession with this spectacular franchise. I have played every modern Smurf title and I have Smurfing loved every one. Accordingly, when I knew this was on the horizon, I couldn’t wait to get started. Spoiler alert, it didn’t disappoint and my kids loved it as well! Though this isn’t too easy for younger gamers, children aged 7+ can tackle the platforming elements. However, some challenging moments may need your assistance. Consequently, you may need to be on call to help out.

This 3D platform adventure title was developed by Ocellus Studio and published by Microids. Moreover, it can be enjoyed alone or cooperatively from one screen. Though I didn’t test the latter aspect, I imagine it’ll be a great way to tackle each level. The solo gameplay evolves nicely and I felt that the end game elements were more challenging for adult gamers. Thankfully, the opening stages offer enough to entertain you and provide a gentle learning curve for less experienced players.

The Smurfs: Dreams tells a surreal tale.

Gargamel doesn’t know when to quit. This evil wizard has hatched another scheme to capture every Smurf. His cowardly plan involves a curse and the Smurfs’ favourite bushes. Yet, he doesn’t think about the bravery of a standalone Smurf and this is his downfall. The unnamed hero must enter a dream world and wake every trapped Smurf. If they cannot succeed, the Smurf universe is over and Gargamel will finally get his way.

I love a great fantasy tale and this one was captivating. The strange surreal settings were eye-catching and weird. Furthermore, they highlight key elements of each Smurf’s personality. As such, if you follow the TV show, you will enjoy the extra layers of lore and the added depth. If you are not a massive fan, this matters not. You’ll enjoy the gameplay as it unfolds even if you don’t understand the little Easter eggs.

Balanced gameplay.

The Smurfs: Dreams focuses on platforming basics and some interesting puzzles. Moreover, there are special tools to unlock that change your approach. You can arm yourself with a magical hammer to smash blocks and build new platforms. Alternatively, there is a sticky gun to stop fans and activate switches. Finally, a magical lamp reveals hidden paths and this creates a mind-bending reality.

As you explore each level you must grab fruit to unlock new costumes and find magical mushrooms to unlock new dreams. On top of this, a Smurf is hidden in plain sight. If you can find this sneaky individual, you can unlock more costumes to customise your character. These basic ideas were great as they forced you to explore each stage thoroughly. Moreover, it was rewarding when you found each item.

The game is broken down into minor character dreams and story-progressing quests. Though each idea uses the same core mechanics, the latter option is longer and more challenging. This was great as it gives you something to get your teeth into. The minor dreams were great fun and my kids particularly enjoyed the short sharp levels. Subsequently, there is a nice balance between casual and more hardcore stages.

The Smurfs: Dreams looks great.

The developer has made The Smurfs: Dreams an aesthetically pleasing game. Each world has an airy feel that is magical and unusual. Furthermore, as the game progresses, things turn darker and more sinister. This was perfect as it reminded me of an old-school fairy tale. Luckily though, it isn’t too grim for younger children and I wasn’t worried about gaming-induced nightmares. The level design was clever and I was reminded of the SEGA classic, World of Illusion. The dreamy state and clever perspective-shifting ideas keep you on your toes and make sure you are entertained thoroughly.

The audio was a glorious blend of drama and fear. What’s more, there are some repetitive themes that should have been tiresome, but they weren’t. I loved the familiar sound clips as you knew what was coming. Moreover, it made it easier for my kids to understand each objective without an explanation. On top of this, the sound effects were enjoyable and there wasn’t too much Smurfy language.

Excellent controls.

Tight and responsive controls keep you on the straight and narrow. Additionally, the easy-to-understand control layout was ideal for inexperienced gamers. Thankfully, the simple mechanics were rudimentary and this complemented every core mechanic. This sounds like the game is too easy to play, but it isn’t. Instead, the developers have got the balance just right and the game challenges you as each layer evolves.

Where The Smurfs: Dreams falls short is its replay value. Unfortunately, you only get around 10 hours of gameplay. This was a little short for my liking. However, it can be extended if you search for every collectable or you grab a teammate and relive every level. Luckily the first playthrough is good and this ensures that I wasn’t too disappointed.

The Smurfs: Dreams is a great addition to the franchise.

Though The Smurfs: Dreams wasn’t as long as I hoped, I enjoyed every moment. What’s more, my kids loved the colourful dreams and the glorious audio. Alongside this, the controls were easy to master and I adored the plot. Accordingly, it is a great addition to the franchise and I recommend buying it here! Can you save every Smurf in the village? Jump into each dream, help every Smurf, and thwart Gargamel.

Review: Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank

The Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank is a compact but powerful device. Furthermore, it is stylish, hard-wearing, and suitable for everyday charging. On top of this, if you fly, it is aviation-safe. Accordingly, you needn’t worry about your tech being confiscated by the hardworking security team.

This small power bank has 3-in-1 multi-port charging for increased versatility. Moreover, it has 85W high-powered output and impressive 65W rapid charging. Consequently, this device can charge your valuable tech in no time and can be charged 2 to 3 times faster than its 45W competitors. Therefore, you are rarely out of the game if you have this product in your bag.

What’s in the box of the Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank?

  • The packaging is small and simple. Additionally, it can be recycled.
  • The Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank has a chunky appearance and a reassuring weight. Moreover, the ports are well-positioned and it is robust.
  • A high-powered USB-C to USB-C cable is provided.
  • Learn the basics with the user guide.

Technical aspects.

Power banks are two a penny these days. Everyone has one and finding the next big thing is tough. What’s more, finding the right output for your precious tech is easier said than done. Thankfully, the 85W output is high enough to keep up with the most demanding gadgets. Moreover, the 3-in-1 multi-port connectivity lets you charge your devices with ease. This was ideal whenever we camped or hiked for a day. No one wants their phone, watch, or tablet to run out of juice, and this product never let me down.

I loved the versatility and the rapid output. Yet, it was the high-speed input that impressed me more. The ability to charge this in just 1 hour and 40 minutes was phenomenal. We’ve all been to places with limited plug sockets. Subsequently, you feel guilty when you hog the juice supply. Thankfully, you can get this charged up in no time and get on with your day.

Cuktech has released some figures for Samsung and Apple owners. It claims a 30-minute charge will boost a MacBook Air to 55%, an Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max to 56%, or the Samsung S24U to 68%. These are some impressive figures for some extremely power-hungry items.

Safety.

I’ve mentioned the aviation-safe element. Accordingly, you can be assured that this power bank can go with you on your holiday. However, it is the VO fire-resistant shell and the additional layers of protection that were reassuring. It has short circuit protection, temperature protection, overcurrent protection, and much more.

This was ideal as I’m not willing to plug my expensive gadgets into a poorly designed power source. Thankfully, the reassuring layers of protection gave me the freedom to charge everything without concern.

Build quality.

The Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank has a chunky pillar design. This weighty item feels great in your hand. What’s more, it has a futuristic look that matches any modern aesthetic. Unlike the Cuktech 25,000 mAh alternative, this doesn’t come with a travel bag. Consequently, you’ll have to keep the bits together when you are out and about.

The brushed silver finish is pleasant to look at and I liked the simple black accents. The ports are well-labelled and the handy screen highlights the battery capacity. This was perfect as you are never unsure of the remaining power. Finally, the USB-C cable is strong and flexible. This high-powered tool lets you maximise the potential of this device. As such, if you wish to replace it, make sure you get another suitable high-speed alternative.

Is the Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank worth it?

When I tested the 25,000 mAh device, I loved it. However, it is more expensive than its smaller brother and this will put some people off. The Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank hits the sweet spot. It is available for under £45 and its input and output ratings will appeal to a wide audience. Moreover, the levels of protection are great and I like the design. Therefore, this is a great option for gamers, commuters, or those who camp or hike. Accordingly, I recommend buying it here!

Review: The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire is a delightful and imaginative adventure that takes players on a unique journey through a world filled with storybook magic and surprising twists. Developed by All Possible Futures and published by Devolver Digital, this game stands out with its beautiful art style, engaging gameplay mechanics, and an innovative approach to storytelling. In a market crowded with big-budget titles and familiar formulas, “The Plucky Squire” brings a refreshing, charming experience that’s hard to resist. Let’s break down what makes it so
enjoyable and where it slightly falls short.

Story and Concept

One of the game’s strongest points is its unique concept. “The Plucky Squire” centers around Jot, a brave little hero, whose life unfolds within the pages of a storybook. The story takes place in a charming, illustrated children’s book world that’s deceptively simple yet packed with emotional depth. As players progress, they discover that Jot is not limited to the confines of the book; he can break out into the real world, transitioning from 2D storybook landscapes to 3D environments in the room where the book resides.

This clever twist on the concept of an interactive storybook is both nostalgic and fresh, inviting players to explore a world that seems to leap off the pages. The premise of moving between 2D and 3D worlds isn’t just a gimmick; it’s woven into the gameplay in a way that feels seamless and natural, creating a narrative that’s immersive and memorable.

“The Plucky Squire” combines platforming, puzzle-solving, and combat in a way that feels intuitive and rewarding. The 2D segments involve classic platforming, reminiscent of games from the early days of gaming, but with modern polish. Controls are smooth and responsive, making the 2D sections a joy to navigate. The gameplay mechanics in these sections are straightforward but fun, with puzzles that feel challenging enough to engage without causing frustration.

The magic really happens when Jot jumps out of the storybook and into the 3D world. This transition feels like stepping through a portal, as players leave the flat world of the storybook and find themselves in a lively, three-dimensional environment. The 3D segments add another layer of depth, with environmental puzzles that are well-designed and satisfying to solve. Objects that seemed like mere background details in 2D become interactive elements in 3D, creating an experience that encourages exploration and curiosity.

One minor drawback is the occasional inconsistency in difficulty. Some puzzles are surprisingly simple, while others can feel disproportionately challenging. It’s not enough to detract significantly from the experience, but it’s a slight blemish on an otherwise well-balanced gameplay experience.

The art direction in “The Plucky Squire” is nothing short of stunning. The game’s visual style is heavily inspired by children’s books, with hand-drawn illustrations that are vibrant and full of character. Every scene feels like a page out of a storybook, brimming with whimsical details and a cozy color palette that evokes nostalgia.
The transition between 2D and 3D is especially impressive from a visual standpoint. When Jot steps out of the book, the room he enters feels like a delightful combination of real-world elements and fairy-tale charm. Textures, lighting, and shading are all handled beautifully, creating a sense of immersion that makes you feel like you’re part of this magical world.

However, while the game’s visuals are charming, some minor graphical issues occasionally arise, especially during the transitions between 2D and 3D. These glitches are mostly cosmetic and don’t significantly impact gameplay, but they can briefly break the sense of immersion.

The audio design in “The Plucky Squire” is another highlight. The soundtrack is whimsical and uplifting, perfectly complementing the game’s lighthearted tone and storybook aesthetic. The music changes dynamically as players move between 2D and 3D, enhancing the sense of exploration and adding to the immersive experience.

Sound effects are equally well-crafted, from the rustling of pages in the book to the soft hum of ambient noise in the 3D world. Every sound feels thoughtfully placed, adding subtle layers of depth to the game’s already rich atmosphere. However, the game lacks voice acting, which might have added another layer to the narrative. While this choice keeps the focus on the storybook feel, a bit of narration could have further enhanced the storytelling experience.

The Plucky Squire is a relatively short game, with an estimated playtime of around 6 to 8 hours. This length feels appropriate for the story it wants to tell, but players looking for a longer experience might feel a bit shortchanged. There is some replayability due to hidden collectibles and secrets, but not enough to warrant multiple playthroughs for most players.

Overall, “The Plucky Squire” is an amazing, imaginative experience that showcases the magic of storytelling in a way that’s rarely seen in games. Its unique 2D-to-3D mechanic is more than a novelty; it’s a fundamental part of the gameplay that enhances the experience, making it both memorable and enjoyable. The game’s art, music, and concept come together beautifully, creating a world that feels alive and inviting.

While it has minor flaws, such as occasional difficulty spikes and some graphical glitches, these issues are small in comparison to the charm and creativity on display. For players seeking a fresh, story-driven experience, “The Plucky Squire” is a must-play that will leave you smiling from start to finish.

Review: Kvark

Developed by Latest Past, Perun Creative and published by Perun Creative, Kvark is an explosive FPS alternate history cold war Boomer Shooter set in the Czech Republic.

A good game aside, I have an interesting question for the people of Czech Republic. What the hell is going on?  This is the third game I have played that openly wants you to know, it’s in the Czech Republic and the entire thing is post nuclear Hell. Do you guys need someone to talk to?

I can understand the Russians or the Japanese with their tragic histories but my man, who hurt you? Who hurt you?

Boom Boom Pow

There is nothing complicated to understand. You run and evade and you shoot. The gunplay of Kvark is deep and exciting, the weapons are reactive and explosive and the enemies fall with some satisfying gusto.

Trust me, it gets bloody and this just might be my inner psychopath talking, but watching those limbs fly and those heads pop was very satisfying.

Throughout Kvark, you will confront clean-up squads, mutated creatures, and buzzing robots armed with a traditional yet effective arsenal. Each weapon, from the wrench to the pistol, shotgun, assault rifle, long rifle, and grenades, lives up to its promise. The assault rifle stands out as a reliable all-rounder, while the basic pistol excels at precision, capable of taking out heads or severing limbs with ease.

Weapons:

The double-barrel shotgun is a true powerhouse, giving you the exhilarating option to fire both barrels at once. When you pull the trigger, it unleashes devastating close-range blasts that can obliterate enemies in an instant, sending them flying and leaving a satisfying spray of chaos in your wake.

On the tactical side, the rechargeable EMP rifle stands out by giving you a strategic edge. With its charged blasts, you can stun foes, creating the perfect opportunity to regroup or launch a counterattack. It’s a game-changer in tight situations, allowing you to turn the tide in your favour.

Then there’s the crossbow, a weapon that demands a bit more finesse. It may have a slower reload time, but its powerful scoped shots make it incredibly effective for those moments when precision is key. You can pick off enemies from a distance, taking your time to line up the perfect shot.

And let’s not forget the minigun. When managed carefully, it becomes a weapon of destruction, capable of shredding through hordes of enemies with ease in Kvark. The sheer volume of fire it puts out is impressive. Making it a go-to choice for those moments when you need to clear out a swarm.

Okay, Moving on!

Half life Boomer Shooter

I’ve noticed a ton of people online drawing comparisons between Kvark and Half-Life, saying it gives off similar vibes. Personally, I just don’t see it. Sure, both games feature a soldier navigating a military research facility overrun by some kind of alien presence, and there are plenty of Hazmat-suited characters running around. But beyond those surface similarities, I think they’re worlds apart.

Half-Life has a unique atmosphere and storytelling style that sets it apart, while Kvark leans more into chaotic, explosive gameplay and a boomer shooter feel. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. There are no comparisons to be made.

I don’t know, I just don’t get it.

An Old Fresh Take

So there you have it—Kvark is a thrilling dive into a chaotic world that keeps you on your toes. The mix of explosive gameplay and wild visuals makes it a total blast, and you can’t help but get swept up in the madness of it all.

And let’s not forget the Czech backdrop. It’s intriguing how this setting is steeped in post-nuclear vibes. It really makes you wonder what’s up with the country’s gaming scene—are the developers trying to tell us something?

Kvark is really its own beast, embracing the boomer shooter spirit without getting bogged down in the past. If you’re up for some chaotic fun, this game delivers in spades.

After all the gunfire and mayhem, maybe take a moment to chat with the locals, they might have some wild stories about their world that go beyond the game.

Review: Besiege Console

Besiege Console is a game that sits in my most hated category. Physics-based action is often unpredictable and clumsy to play. This leads to frustration, anger, and a quick uninstall. Unfortunately, I cannot cut my experience short when I review a game. Accordingly, I have to put on my big boy pants and suck it up. Luckily, most of my preconceived ideas were wrong and this turned out to be a surprisingly pleasant game.

This physics-based adventure title was developed and published by Spiderling Studios. Moreover, it is a single-player game that is jam-packed with maddening levels. If you love building and destroying stuff, this game is for you. Additionally, if you add medieval equipment and strange locations into the mix, you get a bizarre endeavour that tests your DIY capabilities and patience.

Besiege Console doesn’t tell a story.

The game has an overworld map that must be conquered. Each area has a unique environment and varied obstacles to overcome. However, what it is missing, is a deep and captivating story. This was a shame as Besiege Console could have easily increased its depth in one simple move. Every area could have had an overlord to defeat as you tried to rule a continent. This wasn’t to be, instead, you flit from world to world whilst focusing on your destructive power.

Though the missing plot disappointed me, I loved the action that unfolded. Each level has a special task that must be completed. Furthermore, you are free to design a hulking beast of a siege machine. This was fantastic as you can let your imagination go wild. Moreover, you can test theories and push the envelope when it comes to your destructive prowess.

Get building.

There are 50+ levels of physics-based madness to overcome. During this time, you must add and remove blocks, cannons, grabbers, and other elements to your machine. You are free to create an enormous beast or a streamlined vehicle. Either way, you need to consider the goal of the level and the obstacles you’ll encounter.

The developer has made things easier by adding new items that are relevant to that level. Accordingly, you can’t go too far wrong as you experiment with the tools at hand. I adored creating vehicles with multiple cannons or experimenting with ridiculously tall builds. It didn’t matter what I tried, as I could undo any layer I wished. What was hilarious, though, was when the machine toppled and fell as my planning was ridiculous.

This is where Besiege Console thrives. You are not penalised for your experiments. Instead, it encourages you to be as wild and as crazy as you like! Sometimes things go wrong, but this matters not. Simply erase the poor elements and try something new.

Besiege Console has a basic design.

Visually, Besiege Console will not blow you away. The small levels evolve as the game progresses. However, the level of detail is minimalistic and the colour palette is reasonably bland. Yet, the goals are easy to understand and the free-moving camera helps to navigate each world.

The audio is just as basic. Sadly, the sound effects aren’t as outlandish as I hoped and this was unfortunate. Moreover, the soundtrack isn’t memorable and I was expecting much more. I hoped the developer would include a hearty folksy theme that would match the medieval influences. Sadly, this never materialised and the action suffered as a consequence.

Clunky controls.

Physics-based games are renowned for their challenging control system. This title is no different and controlling your machine is tough. The steering is particularly poor and this makes it hard to slalom past bombs and oncoming troops. Furthermore, climbing rocks can be difficult and depth perception isn’t easy to judge. As such, this adds to the frustration and may put some people off.

50+ levels is a lot of content. If you love the idea of destroying never-ending objects and avoiding enemy projectiles, then this is the game for you. Sadly, though, once you work through each stage, I can’t see a reason to return. Subsequently, replay value and longevity are somewhat limited.

Besiege Console is a good indie game.

Besiege Console hasn’t changed my opinion on this gaming category. I’m still not a fan of physics-based action as the controls drive me mad. Furthermore, there is a sense of luck that generates unnecessary heartache. However, this is a good indie and I appreciate the creative freedom. As such, I liked it despite the frustrations and I recommend buying it here! Can you destroy everything in sight? Pick your parts, study your goals, and build a mean machine.

Review: Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker

The Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker is the perfect distraction for your youngsters. Moreover, it looks absolutely incredible! The 2022 version allows you to select a dragon or an owl. Accordingly, there is a feminine and masculine design to appease any child. I’m reviewing the dragon option and my kids adore it! Furthermore, I think it’s pretty special when it keeps them from being under my feet for 5 minutes or longer.

This compact speaker is blessed with all the goodness of the Amazon Kids+ subscription. Thankfully, a 1 year free sub is included in the package. Alongside this, it can be used alongside other Amazon devices to scream at your children from another room. The Drop-in feature has caused much hilarity as silly and naughty messages are conveyed between floors.

If this isn’t enough for you, there are Alexa commands, parental controls, and plenty of games and apps to enjoy. Consequently, this little speaker packs an almighty punch.

What’s in the box of the Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker?

  • The rugged packaging looks great. The imagery is colourful and it’s sure to excite any child.
  • The Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker is a vibrant masterpiece. The dragon looks amazing and the tactile buttons are easy to use.
  • A power cable is provided to charge the device.
  • Learn the basics with the user manual.

Technical aspects.

This powerful little speaker is effectively a dolled-up version of the adult Echo Dot. Subsequently, the speaker is exceptional and probably too good for its intended audience. However, this matters not as you can enjoy the music that is selected or be amazed as Alexa helps with every homework problem. Alongside this, your children can control smart appliances from the device. Now, if this isn’t something that appeals to you, you can deactivate it from the parental app. After all, who wants their TV or living room hijacked by a ten-year-old?

One of the shortcomings of this device is its lack of battery power. Unfortunately, you must have it plugged in at all times. Accordingly, if you are a bit OCD about power usage, this may make you sweat. Additionally, plugs aren’t always freely available, and this can cause some minor issues. Yet, this shouldn’t be a deal breaker as it has a low power draw and the compact speaker can be housed on any solid surface.

Security.

Being a parent is somewhat worrying. The Internet is a dark place and your privacy has never been so important. Luckily, the Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker prioritises these concerns. Amazon has provided multi-layered privacy protection to keep you and your family safe. On top of this, you can mute the microphone to prevent private conversations from being overheard. This was great as it gives you a reassuring feeling.

Usability.

Just like the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro tablet, this device is unbelievably easy to use. This was great as my kids couldn’t wait to get started. The box hadn’t even been opened and they were clambering over one another to get the music pumping. Thankfully, this wasn’t an issue as I managed to get the speaker set up in record time. Furthermore, connecting it to the parental app and my Wi-Fi was unbelievably simple.

Once you get things going, you can activate your 1-year subscription service. After this, I suggest looking at advanced apps to improve your user experience. There are plenty to pick from, but we enjoyed Number Blocks, Disney, and Audible to name but a few.

If you are familiar with Alexa, you won’t be taken by surprise. However, I was impressed by the excellent microphone pick-up and how it understood every question my kids threw at it. I’d like to say they used this device for purely educational reasons, but some rather questionable songs were played on repeat. Unfortunately, the immature music was just the tip of the silly iceberg. As such, if you invest, you can expect to hear plenty of jokes, farts, and horrific music.

Build quality.

I love the tactile buttons and the streamlined approach. Moreover, the charging port is hidden at the rear for perfect cable management. This is ideal as it reduces tripping hazards and prevents any unnecessary damage. On top of this, the bottom has a pleasant blue light that activates during commands. This was fantastic as it brought the speaker to life.

I wouldn’t say that this device is bulletproof, but it is pretty hard-wearing. I admit that I dropped it a couple of times and it was left unscathed. However, it landed on carpeted flooring, so this didn’t test it too much. Consequently, I wouldn’t go chucking it about and I had to remind my kids that it wasn’t a toy.

Is the Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker worth it?

Amazon has grabbed this niche market and made it their own. The Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker doesn’t cut corners and is easy to use. Furthermore, it looks great and it respects your privacy. On top of this, the 1 year subscription is packed with content and the ability to control every aspect is reassuring. Accordingly, this is a superb product and I recommend buying it here!
