Review of Disney Infinity

478_InfinityLogo_ENG

Ok let’s start at the beginning with Skylanders first before I get into Disney Infinity, when Activision brought out Skylanders – Spyro’s Adventure two years ago it was a huge gamble from Activision. The idea that players would buy a game and use related figures to expand the experience seemed too expensive and very risky since it would look like a money grab. Not only did the experiment work, but it also created a big franchise.

Disney is a juggernaut with its vast library of television and film characters which most people know. The game is split into two modes, each with different mechanics. The first is Play Sets, which takes the world of a movie or series and transforms it into an adventure with appropriate tasks. Though each play set differs in content and focus, the basics are similar.

Infinity_X360_SP_Bundle_ENG_ESP_POR

You’re given an open world to explore with no load times, but the worlds are quite small, so don’t expect Saints Row type game. You’re free to do as you please, and there are plenty of side-quests to occupy your time. There’s also a litany of world-specific collectibles and achievements. Specific missions propel the tale forward, and they are the most important aspect if you want to progress. While the sets can be played solo, you can also play them in co-op. Due to the split-screen nature of co-op, players can play together or independently as long as they stay within the same area of the map.

Included in the starter pack are three play sets with three corresponding figures. The first play set is Monsters University with Sulley. Instead of doing an adaptation of the movie events, the game focuses on a nebulous time within the movie universe, so it’s spoiler-free for those who haven’t seen the film yet. The Monster University game begins at the start of Fear-it Week, when Monsters University and rival school Fear Tech compete in a series of tasks and games to rack up points. With school pride on the line, it’s be up to you to clean up the mess caused by Fear Tech students and then travel to their campus to create some mischief.

Monsters University is set up with a focus on stealth and platforming rather than combat. Though you fight a few Fear Tech bullies with toilet paper guns, paintball guns and a charge move, scares are your main mode of offense, and they are more effective when you sneak up on an unsuspecting target. When you aren’t scaring students, you’ll set up gag items that launch an unsuspecting student into the air, get him painted or send him down a sewer. Beyond this, you’ll collect stuff and do fetch quests, like painting over rival posters, dressing up students or getting rid of toilet paper and banners from your campus

MonstersU_5

The lack of dedicated combat limits the appeal of this play set, but it’s perfect for those who just want to goof off. There are lots of people you can throw for no good reason, and the focus on prank traps really opens up once you obtain more traps that you can chain together. There are even ramps and half-pipes on which you can perform bike tricks.

You won’t be doing anything complicated, but it’s a nice diversion. The variety of fetch quests keep the player engaged since the game spaces out activities before they start to repeat. There’s rarely a time when you don’t feel like you have anything to do, and when you consider the size of each location, that’s a good thing.

With Pirates of the Caribbean making up the second play set of Disney Infinity, and with this play set it provides an alternate take on the second and third films. Playing with the included Captain Jack Sparrow figure, you race against time to stop Davy Jones from obtaining the treasures required to rule the seas. You want the same treasures to stop the Kraken that Davy Jones controls.

389_JackSparrow1

The Pirates of the Caribbean play set has straightforward platforming action. You’ll solve light puzzles or jump from ledge to ledge to reach higher places or find hidden treasure chests. Swordplay is your main form of combat, and you’ll duke it out with Davy Jones’ crew. You have secondary weaponry in the form of pistols and bombs, but their reload times are quite long, so you have to mix things up to make your attacks effective.

Review of Black Ops 2: Apocalypse DLC From Activision

Back to it’s origins is the theme for the final DLC pack in the season pass for Black Ops 2. With two out of four multiplayer maps being re-imaginings and the new zombie map starring familiar faces, is this faithful fan service, or are they on the cusp of stagnation?

Frost_-_River_tour_1377622300

Frost takes place in a snowed over European city, with a dreadfully narrow bridge, of which no-one dares cross due to ample sniper coverage. Flanking routes adorn the sides, giving players who have a sense of survivability an avenue to travel. A central, frozen canal river resides perpendicular to the general passages of combat, providing a quick; sneaky way to cross the breadth of the map, often undetected. Several rooms overlook high-traffic areas, perfect for sitting quietly in a corner; frustrating the run ‘n’ gunners. Several long lines of sight grace this map making a long range assault rifle or LMG a useful choice for the majority of encounters.

Pod, an atypical example of how visions of utopia often, in media at least, turn into a literal warzone. An overgrown palette of clambering vines and dilapidated structures provide the setting for a good mixture of close and mid-range combat. A natural looking environment makes a change from the fashionable ‘clean’ look of some previous maps and creates an almost believable theatre. Small pods are dotted about in predictably tactical positions, overlooking entrances and each other, often giving you something to shoot at. The outer skirts hold some particularly nasty lines of sight for those who love to exploit the head glitch spots too.

Takeoff_-_T_minus_10_1377622305

Dig is the first of two remakes in Apocalypse, taking it’s inspiration from the classic World at War map: Courtyard, it’s frenetic outdoor corridors house some ferocious SMG and shotgun battles, whilst the wily may find solace via clambering to a vantage point. Blindly charging into the centre will reward you with a killcam faster than you can scream an obscenity as there are many canny places to hide and spy around the outskirts. If you do plan on taking the aggressive stance, you’d better brush up on corner peeking as the square map is somehow filled with them. With many clamber points; being able to take unpredictable routes throughout the map, objective based games can be surprisingly more tactical, the downside being the inevitably large amount of deaths from behind!

Takeoff is the final multiplayer map on offer, reminiscent of the original Black Ops map Stadium from the First Strike DLC. Favouring verticality and large open areas ripe for air superiority, it’s a snipers paradise. Or in other words, frustrating! Easily defendable vantage points are rife, making certain game-types a nightmare to traverse between objectives. My best survival technique involved a silenced SMG, and sticking to the outskirts at all times, manly! Domination is hectic to say the least, but then, Domination is always hectic! With a couple of power points under your teams control, the enemy shouldn’t stand a chance.

Origins_-_German_Robot_1377622403

Origins, by far the packs largest draw, sees the original gang banding together again in a new zombie adventure. With a 1000 ft. roaming robot, wonder weapons aplenty and an all new Easter egg to discover, most players will find solace here. Multiple individual generators powering small sections of the map as opposed to the classic ‘power on’ switch, allows a little more exploration and planning that can go into the starting phase. Set in the era of WW1, trenches and no-mans land are the suitable battlegrounds of Origins. Again, a lot of new material, and lore, has been implemented into zombies. New elemental staffs can be created, a giant tank can be ridden around on and new armoured zombies will destroy you if you’re not geared up properly. A whole slew of secrets awaits those with four players, patience and a penchant for exploration, perhaps there’s even an end besides dropping dead at the hands of the horde?

Despite the always on par zombie offering and the entertaining, if not a little tired multiplayer maps, with Ghosts just around the corner, you’d probably be better off putting the cash towards that instead. Although a solid offering, it’s timing of release was simply too late in the games life-cycle to warrant a purchase from many but the hardcore. Without any special features or new playlists on offer, the resounding bang it deserves to go out on, ends up as more of a fizzle to mark the end of one of the best shooters of this generation.

Dark Horse Comics announces The Witcher comic

Dark Horse Comics proudly announces its next hit video game tie-in series, The Witcher, based on the critically acclaimed games by CD Projekt RED.

witcher

From Paul Tobin, the Eisner Award–winning writer of Bandette, with art by Joe Querio (Lobster Johnson, B.P.R.D.) and covers by Dave Johnson (100 Bullets), comes a riveting comic based on The Witcher, a series of dark fantasy RPGs with a character-driven, nonlinear story set in a gritty living world and inspired by a series of extremely popular novels that have been translated into nineteen languages. The comic series introduces a new adventure featuring Geralt of Rivia—a witcher, one of the few remaining monster hunters.

Traveling near the edge of the Black Forest, in the land of the Angren, monster hunter Geralt meets a widowed man whose dead and murderous wife resides in an eerie mansion known as the House of Glass, a place of endless rooms where horror waits around every corner. Geralt will have to use all his witcher prowess to solve the manor’s mystery and survive.

With the two Witcher games already available, fans can get to know Geralt even before the release of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2014 on PC, Play Station4, and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft. The Witcher games have collectively earned over 270 awards and sold more than five million copies worldwide.

The Witcher #1 will be available for purchase on March 19, 2014, in comic shops everywhere!

Win a copy of Irritum from indie-developer Nick Padgett

Irritum, the first release from sole indie-developer, Nick Padgett is a 3D puzzle-platformer that focuses on the sensitive issues of depression and suicide, and we have 20 copies of the game to giveaway.

Screen_Shot_2013-05-21_at_12_45_43_PM

Irritum is a game revolving around the concepts of depression, and suicide. The player finds themselves in purgatory with no memory of their past life. Two mysterious beings, Cassus and Sollus, guide the player in their journey of discovery, and lead them either to retribution or oblivion. The only thing you know is to keep moving forwards, either collecting your memories in each level or ignoring them completely. Either discover the purpose of Irritum, or escape it.

The gameplay for Irritum is a 3d platformer with a puzzle-like twist. The player must use inter-dimensional planes to reach the end of each level, but they can only have one plane activated at a time. For example, the player can activate red platforms and interact with them as normal, but when blue is activated, the player will float through red platforms as if they did not exist. The player also has the ability to create a ghost of themselves that is immune to damage, and reverse gravity at their will to overcome difficult obstacles.

Irritum is available now for £7.49 for the PC, Mac and Linux.

Here is a trailer for Irritum:

GTA Online: Half a Million GTA$ Stimulus Package this Month

0

Given some of the recent technical issues during these first days of GTA Online, and now that things are starting to look much smoother (touch wood!), we are planning to provide a special stimulus package for all who have played or will play Grand Theft Auto Online this month.

We will be dropping a cool half a million GTA$ in the GTA Online bank accounts of all players this month, starting as early as next week.

gta online money

‘Don’t Spend It All in One Place!’

In order to keep the current worldwide in-game economy balanced, we will be providing this GTA$ to players via two deposits of $250,000. We will announce specific dates as soon as possible, but are currently hoping to be able to make the first deposit by the end of next week (after we’ve confirmed that issues causing game progress loss have been fixed) with the second installment to happen by the end of the month. For players who experienced cloud server errors, connection issues, and lost game progress and characters in these first days of GTA Online, we hope this GTA$ helps to facilitate a fresh start or makes your continued life in Los Santos and Blaine County extra sweet.

Below are a few more details on how it will work. Stay tuned for tips on how to make the most of GTA$ cash, info on ways and places to earn more cash fast, as well as updates on all the new GTA Online content additions we’re working on for this fall and beyond.

  • You must play or have played Grand Theft Auto Online at any time during the month of October 2013 in order to qualify for the GTA$500,000 deposit in your in-game bank account.
  • Players will first have to install a forthcoming GTAV title update which we expect to happen next week. That title update (1.04) is expected to fix the remaining instances of issues that have caused vehicle purchase loss and will also enable the functionality through which we’ll be providing this GTA$ stimulus cash to players.
  • We will announce at the Rockstar Newswire when each deposit is made.
  • Each of the two GTA$250,000 deposits will be made by Rockstar and should automatically appear in the in-game GTA Online bank accounts of eligible players. Beyond downloading the forthcoming title update mentioned above, there should not be any additional special action required by eligible players to redeem.
