Review: The Smurfs: Dreams

The Smurfs: Dreams continues my obsession with this spectacular franchise. I have played every modern Smurf title and I have Smurfing loved every one. Accordingly, when I knew this was on the horizon, I couldn’t wait to get started. Spoiler alert, it didn’t disappoint and my kids loved it as well! Though this isn’t too easy for younger gamers, children aged 7+ can tackle the platforming elements. However, some challenging moments may need your assistance. Consequently, you may need to be on call to help out.

This 3D platform adventure title was developed by Ocellus Studio and published by Microids. Moreover, it can be enjoyed alone or cooperatively from one screen. Though I didn’t test the latter aspect, I imagine it’ll be a great way to tackle each level. The solo gameplay evolves nicely and I felt that the end game elements were more challenging for adult gamers. Thankfully, the opening stages offer enough to entertain you and provide a gentle learning curve for less experienced players.

The Smurfs: Dreams tells a surreal tale.

Gargamel doesn’t know when to quit. This evil wizard has hatched another scheme to capture every Smurf. His cowardly plan involves a curse and the Smurfs’ favourite bushes. Yet, he doesn’t think about the bravery of a standalone Smurf and this is his downfall. The unnamed hero must enter a dream world and wake every trapped Smurf. If they cannot succeed, the Smurf universe is over and Gargamel will finally get his way.

I love a great fantasy tale and this one was captivating. The strange surreal settings were eye-catching and weird. Furthermore, they highlight key elements of each Smurf’s personality. As such, if you follow the TV show, you will enjoy the extra layers of lore and the added depth. If you are not a massive fan, this matters not. You’ll enjoy the gameplay as it unfolds even if you don’t understand the little Easter eggs.

Balanced gameplay.

The Smurfs: Dreams focuses on platforming basics and some interesting puzzles. Moreover, there are special tools to unlock that change your approach. You can arm yourself with a magical hammer to smash blocks and build new platforms. Alternatively, there is a sticky gun to stop fans and activate switches. Finally, a magical lamp reveals hidden paths and this creates a mind-bending reality.

As you explore each level you must grab fruit to unlock new costumes and find magical mushrooms to unlock new dreams. On top of this, a Smurf is hidden in plain sight. If you can find this sneaky individual, you can unlock more costumes to customise your character. These basic ideas were great as they forced you to explore each stage thoroughly. Moreover, it was rewarding when you found each item.

The game is broken down into minor character dreams and story-progressing quests. Though each idea uses the same core mechanics, the latter option is longer and more challenging. This was great as it gives you something to get your teeth into. The minor dreams were great fun and my kids particularly enjoyed the short sharp levels. Subsequently, there is a nice balance between casual and more hardcore stages.

The Smurfs: Dreams looks great.

The developer has made The Smurfs: Dreams an aesthetically pleasing game. Each world has an airy feel that is magical and unusual. Furthermore, as the game progresses, things turn darker and more sinister. This was perfect as it reminded me of an old-school fairy tale. Luckily though, it isn’t too grim for younger children and I wasn’t worried about gaming-induced nightmares. The level design was clever and I was reminded of the SEGA classic, World of Illusion. The dreamy state and clever perspective-shifting ideas keep you on your toes and make sure you are entertained thoroughly.

The audio was a glorious blend of drama and fear. What’s more, there are some repetitive themes that should have been tiresome, but they weren’t. I loved the familiar sound clips as you knew what was coming. Moreover, it made it easier for my kids to understand each objective without an explanation. On top of this, the sound effects were enjoyable and there wasn’t too much Smurfy language.

Excellent controls.

Tight and responsive controls keep you on the straight and narrow. Additionally, the easy-to-understand control layout was ideal for inexperienced gamers. Thankfully, the simple mechanics were rudimentary and this complemented every core mechanic. This sounds like the game is too easy to play, but it isn’t. Instead, the developers have got the balance just right and the game challenges you as each layer evolves.

Where The Smurfs: Dreams falls short is its replay value. Unfortunately, you only get around 10 hours of gameplay. This was a little short for my liking. However, it can be extended if you search for every collectable or you grab a teammate and relive every level. Luckily the first playthrough is good and this ensures that I wasn’t too disappointed.

The Smurfs: Dreams is a great addition to the franchise.

Though The Smurfs: Dreams wasn’t as long as I hoped, I enjoyed every moment. What’s more, my kids loved the colourful dreams and the glorious audio. Alongside this, the controls were easy to master and I adored the plot. Accordingly, it is a great addition to the franchise and I recommend buying it here! Can you save every Smurf in the village? Jump into each dream, help every Smurf, and thwart Gargamel.

Review: Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank

The Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank is a compact but powerful device. Furthermore, it is stylish, hard-wearing, and suitable for everyday charging. On top of this, if you fly, it is aviation-safe. Accordingly, you needn’t worry about your tech being confiscated by the hardworking security team.

This small power bank has 3-in-1 multi-port charging for increased versatility. Moreover, it has 85W high-powered output and impressive 65W rapid charging. Consequently, this device can charge your valuable tech in no time and can be charged 2 to 3 times faster than its 45W competitors. Therefore, you are rarely out of the game if you have this product in your bag.

What’s in the box of the Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank?

  • The packaging is small and simple. Additionally, it can be recycled.
  • The Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank has a chunky appearance and a reassuring weight. Moreover, the ports are well-positioned and it is robust.
  • A high-powered USB-C to USB-C cable is provided.
  • Learn the basics with the user guide.

Technical aspects.

Power banks are two a penny these days. Everyone has one and finding the next big thing is tough. What’s more, finding the right output for your precious tech is easier said than done. Thankfully, the 85W output is high enough to keep up with the most demanding gadgets. Moreover, the 3-in-1 multi-port connectivity lets you charge your devices with ease. This was ideal whenever we camped or hiked for a day. No one wants their phone, watch, or tablet to run out of juice, and this product never let me down.

I loved the versatility and the rapid output. Yet, it was the high-speed input that impressed me more. The ability to charge this in just 1 hour and 40 minutes was phenomenal. We’ve all been to places with limited plug sockets. Subsequently, you feel guilty when you hog the juice supply. Thankfully, you can get this charged up in no time and get on with your day.

Cuktech has released some figures for Samsung and Apple owners. It claims a 30-minute charge will boost a MacBook Air to 55%, an Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max to 56%, or the Samsung S24U to 68%. These are some impressive figures for some extremely power-hungry items.

Safety.

I’ve mentioned the aviation-safe element. Accordingly, you can be assured that this power bank can go with you on your holiday. However, it is the VO fire-resistant shell and the additional layers of protection that were reassuring. It has short circuit protection, temperature protection, overcurrent protection, and much more.

This was ideal as I’m not willing to plug my expensive gadgets into a poorly designed power source. Thankfully, the reassuring layers of protection gave me the freedom to charge everything without concern.

Build quality.

The Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank has a chunky pillar design. This weighty item feels great in your hand. What’s more, it has a futuristic look that matches any modern aesthetic. Unlike the Cuktech 25,000 mAh alternative, this doesn’t come with a travel bag. Consequently, you’ll have to keep the bits together when you are out and about.

The brushed silver finish is pleasant to look at and I liked the simple black accents. The ports are well-labelled and the handy screen highlights the battery capacity. This was perfect as you are never unsure of the remaining power. Finally, the USB-C cable is strong and flexible. This high-powered tool lets you maximise the potential of this device. As such, if you wish to replace it, make sure you get another suitable high-speed alternative.

Is the Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank worth it?

When I tested the 25,000 mAh device, I loved it. However, it is more expensive than its smaller brother and this will put some people off. The Cuktech 15 20,000 mAh Power Bank hits the sweet spot. It is available for under £45 and its input and output ratings will appeal to a wide audience. Moreover, the levels of protection are great and I like the design. Therefore, this is a great option for gamers, commuters, or those who camp or hike. Accordingly, I recommend buying it here!

Review: The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire is a delightful and imaginative adventure that takes players on a unique journey through a world filled with storybook magic and surprising twists. Developed by All Possible Futures and published by Devolver Digital, this game stands out with its beautiful art style, engaging gameplay mechanics, and an innovative approach to storytelling. In a market crowded with big-budget titles and familiar formulas, “The Plucky Squire” brings a refreshing, charming experience that’s hard to resist. Let’s break down what makes it so
enjoyable and where it slightly falls short.

Story and Concept

One of the game’s strongest points is its unique concept. “The Plucky Squire” centers around Jot, a brave little hero, whose life unfolds within the pages of a storybook. The story takes place in a charming, illustrated children’s book world that’s deceptively simple yet packed with emotional depth. As players progress, they discover that Jot is not limited to the confines of the book; he can break out into the real world, transitioning from 2D storybook landscapes to 3D environments in the room where the book resides.

This clever twist on the concept of an interactive storybook is both nostalgic and fresh, inviting players to explore a world that seems to leap off the pages. The premise of moving between 2D and 3D worlds isn’t just a gimmick; it’s woven into the gameplay in a way that feels seamless and natural, creating a narrative that’s immersive and memorable.

“The Plucky Squire” combines platforming, puzzle-solving, and combat in a way that feels intuitive and rewarding. The 2D segments involve classic platforming, reminiscent of games from the early days of gaming, but with modern polish. Controls are smooth and responsive, making the 2D sections a joy to navigate. The gameplay mechanics in these sections are straightforward but fun, with puzzles that feel challenging enough to engage without causing frustration.

The magic really happens when Jot jumps out of the storybook and into the 3D world. This transition feels like stepping through a portal, as players leave the flat world of the storybook and find themselves in a lively, three-dimensional environment. The 3D segments add another layer of depth, with environmental puzzles that are well-designed and satisfying to solve. Objects that seemed like mere background details in 2D become interactive elements in 3D, creating an experience that encourages exploration and curiosity.

One minor drawback is the occasional inconsistency in difficulty. Some puzzles are surprisingly simple, while others can feel disproportionately challenging. It’s not enough to detract significantly from the experience, but it’s a slight blemish on an otherwise well-balanced gameplay experience.

The art direction in “The Plucky Squire” is nothing short of stunning. The game’s visual style is heavily inspired by children’s books, with hand-drawn illustrations that are vibrant and full of character. Every scene feels like a page out of a storybook, brimming with whimsical details and a cozy color palette that evokes nostalgia.
The transition between 2D and 3D is especially impressive from a visual standpoint. When Jot steps out of the book, the room he enters feels like a delightful combination of real-world elements and fairy-tale charm. Textures, lighting, and shading are all handled beautifully, creating a sense of immersion that makes you feel like you’re part of this magical world.

However, while the game’s visuals are charming, some minor graphical issues occasionally arise, especially during the transitions between 2D and 3D. These glitches are mostly cosmetic and don’t significantly impact gameplay, but they can briefly break the sense of immersion.

The audio design in “The Plucky Squire” is another highlight. The soundtrack is whimsical and uplifting, perfectly complementing the game’s lighthearted tone and storybook aesthetic. The music changes dynamically as players move between 2D and 3D, enhancing the sense of exploration and adding to the immersive experience.

Sound effects are equally well-crafted, from the rustling of pages in the book to the soft hum of ambient noise in the 3D world. Every sound feels thoughtfully placed, adding subtle layers of depth to the game’s already rich atmosphere. However, the game lacks voice acting, which might have added another layer to the narrative. While this choice keeps the focus on the storybook feel, a bit of narration could have further enhanced the storytelling experience.

The Plucky Squire is a relatively short game, with an estimated playtime of around 6 to 8 hours. This length feels appropriate for the story it wants to tell, but players looking for a longer experience might feel a bit shortchanged. There is some replayability due to hidden collectibles and secrets, but not enough to warrant multiple playthroughs for most players.

Overall, “The Plucky Squire” is an amazing, imaginative experience that showcases the magic of storytelling in a way that’s rarely seen in games. Its unique 2D-to-3D mechanic is more than a novelty; it’s a fundamental part of the gameplay that enhances the experience, making it both memorable and enjoyable. The game’s art, music, and concept come together beautifully, creating a world that feels alive and inviting.

While it has minor flaws, such as occasional difficulty spikes and some graphical glitches, these issues are small in comparison to the charm and creativity on display. For players seeking a fresh, story-driven experience, “The Plucky Squire” is a must-play that will leave you smiling from start to finish.

Review: Kvark

Developed by Latest Past, Perun Creative and published by Perun Creative, Kvark is an explosive FPS alternate history cold war Boomer Shooter set in the Czech Republic.

A good game aside, I have an interesting question for the people of Czech Republic. What the hell is going on?  This is the third game I have played that openly wants you to know, it’s in the Czech Republic and the entire thing is post nuclear Hell. Do you guys need someone to talk to?

I can understand the Russians or the Japanese with their tragic histories but my man, who hurt you? Who hurt you?

Boom Boom Pow

There is nothing complicated to understand. You run and evade and you shoot. The gunplay of Kvark is deep and exciting, the weapons are reactive and explosive and the enemies fall with some satisfying gusto.

Trust me, it gets bloody and this just might be my inner psychopath talking, but watching those limbs fly and those heads pop was very satisfying.

Throughout Kvark, you will confront clean-up squads, mutated creatures, and buzzing robots armed with a traditional yet effective arsenal. Each weapon, from the wrench to the pistol, shotgun, assault rifle, long rifle, and grenades, lives up to its promise. The assault rifle stands out as a reliable all-rounder, while the basic pistol excels at precision, capable of taking out heads or severing limbs with ease.

Weapons:

The double-barrel shotgun is a true powerhouse, giving you the exhilarating option to fire both barrels at once. When you pull the trigger, it unleashes devastating close-range blasts that can obliterate enemies in an instant, sending them flying and leaving a satisfying spray of chaos in your wake.

On the tactical side, the rechargeable EMP rifle stands out by giving you a strategic edge. With its charged blasts, you can stun foes, creating the perfect opportunity to regroup or launch a counterattack. It’s a game-changer in tight situations, allowing you to turn the tide in your favour.

Then there’s the crossbow, a weapon that demands a bit more finesse. It may have a slower reload time, but its powerful scoped shots make it incredibly effective for those moments when precision is key. You can pick off enemies from a distance, taking your time to line up the perfect shot.

And let’s not forget the minigun. When managed carefully, it becomes a weapon of destruction, capable of shredding through hordes of enemies with ease in Kvark. The sheer volume of fire it puts out is impressive. Making it a go-to choice for those moments when you need to clear out a swarm.

Okay, Moving on!

Half life Boomer Shooter

I’ve noticed a ton of people online drawing comparisons between Kvark and Half-Life, saying it gives off similar vibes. Personally, I just don’t see it. Sure, both games feature a soldier navigating a military research facility overrun by some kind of alien presence, and there are plenty of Hazmat-suited characters running around. But beyond those surface similarities, I think they’re worlds apart.

Half-Life has a unique atmosphere and storytelling style that sets it apart, while Kvark leans more into chaotic, explosive gameplay and a boomer shooter feel. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. There are no comparisons to be made.

I don’t know, I just don’t get it.

An Old Fresh Take

So there you have it—Kvark is a thrilling dive into a chaotic world that keeps you on your toes. The mix of explosive gameplay and wild visuals makes it a total blast, and you can’t help but get swept up in the madness of it all.

And let’s not forget the Czech backdrop. It’s intriguing how this setting is steeped in post-nuclear vibes. It really makes you wonder what’s up with the country’s gaming scene—are the developers trying to tell us something?

Kvark is really its own beast, embracing the boomer shooter spirit without getting bogged down in the past. If you’re up for some chaotic fun, this game delivers in spades.

After all the gunfire and mayhem, maybe take a moment to chat with the locals, they might have some wild stories about their world that go beyond the game.

Review: Besiege Console

Besiege Console is a game that sits in my most hated category. Physics-based action is often unpredictable and clumsy to play. This leads to frustration, anger, and a quick uninstall. Unfortunately, I cannot cut my experience short when I review a game. Accordingly, I have to put on my big boy pants and suck it up. Luckily, most of my preconceived ideas were wrong and this turned out to be a surprisingly pleasant game.

This physics-based adventure title was developed and published by Spiderling Studios. Moreover, it is a single-player game that is jam-packed with maddening levels. If you love building and destroying stuff, this game is for you. Additionally, if you add medieval equipment and strange locations into the mix, you get a bizarre endeavour that tests your DIY capabilities and patience.

Besiege Console doesn’t tell a story.

The game has an overworld map that must be conquered. Each area has a unique environment and varied obstacles to overcome. However, what it is missing, is a deep and captivating story. This was a shame as Besiege Console could have easily increased its depth in one simple move. Every area could have had an overlord to defeat as you tried to rule a continent. This wasn’t to be, instead, you flit from world to world whilst focusing on your destructive power.

Though the missing plot disappointed me, I loved the action that unfolded. Each level has a special task that must be completed. Furthermore, you are free to design a hulking beast of a siege machine. This was fantastic as you can let your imagination go wild. Moreover, you can test theories and push the envelope when it comes to your destructive prowess.

Get building.

There are 50+ levels of physics-based madness to overcome. During this time, you must add and remove blocks, cannons, grabbers, and other elements to your machine. You are free to create an enormous beast or a streamlined vehicle. Either way, you need to consider the goal of the level and the obstacles you’ll encounter.

The developer has made things easier by adding new items that are relevant to that level. Accordingly, you can’t go too far wrong as you experiment with the tools at hand. I adored creating vehicles with multiple cannons or experimenting with ridiculously tall builds. It didn’t matter what I tried, as I could undo any layer I wished. What was hilarious, though, was when the machine toppled and fell as my planning was ridiculous.

This is where Besiege Console thrives. You are not penalised for your experiments. Instead, it encourages you to be as wild and as crazy as you like! Sometimes things go wrong, but this matters not. Simply erase the poor elements and try something new.

Besiege Console has a basic design.

Visually, Besiege Console will not blow you away. The small levels evolve as the game progresses. However, the level of detail is minimalistic and the colour palette is reasonably bland. Yet, the goals are easy to understand and the free-moving camera helps to navigate each world.

The audio is just as basic. Sadly, the sound effects aren’t as outlandish as I hoped and this was unfortunate. Moreover, the soundtrack isn’t memorable and I was expecting much more. I hoped the developer would include a hearty folksy theme that would match the medieval influences. Sadly, this never materialised and the action suffered as a consequence.

Clunky controls.

Physics-based games are renowned for their challenging control system. This title is no different and controlling your machine is tough. The steering is particularly poor and this makes it hard to slalom past bombs and oncoming troops. Furthermore, climbing rocks can be difficult and depth perception isn’t easy to judge. As such, this adds to the frustration and may put some people off.

50+ levels is a lot of content. If you love the idea of destroying never-ending objects and avoiding enemy projectiles, then this is the game for you. Sadly, though, once you work through each stage, I can’t see a reason to return. Subsequently, replay value and longevity are somewhat limited.

Besiege Console is a good indie game.

Besiege Console hasn’t changed my opinion on this gaming category. I’m still not a fan of physics-based action as the controls drive me mad. Furthermore, there is a sense of luck that generates unnecessary heartache. However, this is a good indie and I appreciate the creative freedom. As such, I liked it despite the frustrations and I recommend buying it here! Can you destroy everything in sight? Pick your parts, study your goals, and build a mean machine.

Review: Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker

The Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker is the perfect distraction for your youngsters. Moreover, it looks absolutely incredible! The 2022 version allows you to select a dragon or an owl. Accordingly, there is a feminine and masculine design to appease any child. I’m reviewing the dragon option and my kids adore it! Furthermore, I think it’s pretty special when it keeps them from being under my feet for 5 minutes or longer.

This compact speaker is blessed with all the goodness of the Amazon Kids+ subscription. Thankfully, a 1 year free sub is included in the package. Alongside this, it can be used alongside other Amazon devices to scream at your children from another room. The Drop-in feature has caused much hilarity as silly and naughty messages are conveyed between floors.

If this isn’t enough for you, there are Alexa commands, parental controls, and plenty of games and apps to enjoy. Consequently, this little speaker packs an almighty punch.

What’s in the box of the Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker?

  • The rugged packaging looks great. The imagery is colourful and it’s sure to excite any child.
  • The Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker is a vibrant masterpiece. The dragon looks amazing and the tactile buttons are easy to use.
  • A power cable is provided to charge the device.
  • Learn the basics with the user manual.

Technical aspects.

This powerful little speaker is effectively a dolled-up version of the adult Echo Dot. Subsequently, the speaker is exceptional and probably too good for its intended audience. However, this matters not as you can enjoy the music that is selected or be amazed as Alexa helps with every homework problem. Alongside this, your children can control smart appliances from the device. Now, if this isn’t something that appeals to you, you can deactivate it from the parental app. After all, who wants their TV or living room hijacked by a ten-year-old?

One of the shortcomings of this device is its lack of battery power. Unfortunately, you must have it plugged in at all times. Accordingly, if you are a bit OCD about power usage, this may make you sweat. Additionally, plugs aren’t always freely available, and this can cause some minor issues. Yet, this shouldn’t be a deal breaker as it has a low power draw and the compact speaker can be housed on any solid surface.

Security.

Being a parent is somewhat worrying. The Internet is a dark place and your privacy has never been so important. Luckily, the Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker prioritises these concerns. Amazon has provided multi-layered privacy protection to keep you and your family safe. On top of this, you can mute the microphone to prevent private conversations from being overheard. This was great as it gives you a reassuring feeling.

Usability.

Just like the Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro tablet, this device is unbelievably easy to use. This was great as my kids couldn’t wait to get started. The box hadn’t even been opened and they were clambering over one another to get the music pumping. Thankfully, this wasn’t an issue as I managed to get the speaker set up in record time. Furthermore, connecting it to the parental app and my Wi-Fi was unbelievably simple.

Once you get things going, you can activate your 1-year subscription service. After this, I suggest looking at advanced apps to improve your user experience. There are plenty to pick from, but we enjoyed Number Blocks, Disney, and Audible to name but a few.

If you are familiar with Alexa, you won’t be taken by surprise. However, I was impressed by the excellent microphone pick-up and how it understood every question my kids threw at it. I’d like to say they used this device for purely educational reasons, but some rather questionable songs were played on repeat. Unfortunately, the immature music was just the tip of the silly iceberg. As such, if you invest, you can expect to hear plenty of jokes, farts, and horrific music.

Build quality.

I love the tactile buttons and the streamlined approach. Moreover, the charging port is hidden at the rear for perfect cable management. This is ideal as it reduces tripping hazards and prevents any unnecessary damage. On top of this, the bottom has a pleasant blue light that activates during commands. This was fantastic as it brought the speaker to life.

I wouldn’t say that this device is bulletproof, but it is pretty hard-wearing. I admit that I dropped it a couple of times and it was left unscathed. However, it landed on carpeted flooring, so this didn’t test it too much. Consequently, I wouldn’t go chucking it about and I had to remind my kids that it wasn’t a toy.

Is the Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker worth it?

Amazon has grabbed this niche market and made it their own. The Amazon Echo Dot Kids speaker doesn’t cut corners and is easy to use. Furthermore, it looks great and it respects your privacy. On top of this, the 1 year subscription is packed with content and the ability to control every aspect is reassuring. Accordingly, this is a superb product and I recommend buying it here!

Review: Railroad Corporation 2

Developed by Corbie Games and published by Iceberg Interactive, Railroad Corporation 2 is a strategy-based train tycoon simulator that emphasizes realism.

Stats say that the average reader will only read the beginning of a review before shooting down to the end. So for my early opinion, here is your word of the day: OVERWHELMING!

It’s a Train Tycoon

Whether you clicked the campaign mode or went head first into the sandbox mode, it won’t take long before you get into the thick list of mechanics in Railroad Corporation 2.

On the surface, it looks like just any other train tycoon; a bunch of buildings, tracks and trains transferring things here and there.

However, after a while, you will be hit in the head by the complications. From managing even the tiniest aspects of your travels, from engine speed to scheduling and cost of operations, you will have your hands full throughout the playthrough. And honestly, I love it!

My preferences

I am not one to go out looking for tycoons or simulators but I do love a good one. I would not shy away from spending a few dozen hours, maybe days, sometimes even weeks on a game. I won’t lie to you, I have an ungodly number of hours of satisfaction.

I even remember a while ago how I got myself hooked to Aquarist. (I wrote an article and everything on my feelings).

But I digress.

In my experience with Railroad Corporation 2, I had an incredibly enjoyable time during the first few days of gameplay. However, as I continued, I started to feel a bit lost. Don’t get me wrong, I genuinely loved the game and found it engaging at the outset.

Yet, after that initial surge of excitement, I noticed that the enjoyment began to wane. What once felt like an exhilarating adventure gradually transformed into a tedious micromanagement slog.

Still a functional and well-versed game but not my cup of tea.

ANALOGY MOMENT

Imagine a boat: it’s a great boat, with a strong engine, great seats and very beautiful decor. You like this boat and would love to spend some time on it.

However, after a while of smooth sailing, you come to realise something off-putting, something worth a second guess, another look. A dawning revelation that you don’t like where this boat is headed.

It is then, at this very moment, that no matter what the comfort levels are or how many cup holders you have, you just don’t care. Maybe a nice Aquatic sighting now and then would give you a moment of thrill and excitement but ultimately, it’s all for a lost cause.

All Aboard!!!

Railroad Corporation 2 is a well-made simulation that pulls players into the detailed world of train management. If you enjoy tackling the challenges of logistics and the fine points of running a railroad, this game offers plenty of depth and strategy.

However, While starting is exciting, it can turn into a bit of a grind as the enjoyment fades under the pressure of constant management.

Overall, Railroad Corporation 2 is a great choice for fans of the tycoon genre, showcasing impressive attention to detail. It’s a game that requires patience and dedication, rewarding players who dive into its systems. While it might not be my favourite, I can see the effort and creativity that went into it.

If you’re looking for a challenging tycoon experience, this game could be just what you need. Just be ready for the complexities that come with it. Enjoy your journey in the world of trains!

Oh yes, I forgot to mention. This is one of the most gorgeous games I have played in a while!

Review: Sonic x Shadow Generations

The Sonic franchise has experienced its ups and downs over the years, but it’s clear that SEGA is returning to form with their latest release: a remastered version of Sonic Generations paired with a brand-new addition—Shadow Generations. This dual package not only celebrates one of Sonic’s greatest titles but also introduces a fresh experience with Shadow the Hedgehog at the helm. The combination of nostalgic thrills with modern improvements makes this one of the best Sonic offerings in recent years. Now with the release of of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie coming up very soon this is a perfect time to dive deep into the history of Shadow.

Sonic Generations Remastered: A Timeless Classic Gets a Shine

For long-time Sonic fans, Sonic Generations is an absolute gem. It’s widely regarded as one of the best Sonic games, and this remaster only reinforces that reputation. Generations still shines with its blend of 2D and 3D gameplay, bringing the perfect balance of speed, platforming, and iconic level design. The remastered version doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, and that’s a good thing. Instead, it polishes the experience with modern visual upgrades, smoother performance, and some added bonus content that enhances replay-ability.

The variety in level design is as strong as ever, showcasing classic and modern takes on iconic stages, from the lush Green Hill Zone to the industrialized Chemical Plant. Each stage is crafted to perfection, blending challenge with pure fun, all while honouring Sonic’s rich history. For those who already love Sonic Generations, the remaster feels like coming home, but with an added layer of sparkle and fluidity that makes the experience feel fresh even years later.

Shadow Generations: A Worthy Addition with New Powers and Puzzles

The biggest draw of this release is the inclusion of Shadow Generations, a game that runs parallel to the events of Sonic Generations. Shadow is no stranger to Sonic fans, but this time, he steps into the spotlight in a game that builds on the foundations of Generations while carving its own path. Much like Sonic’s journey through his past, Shadow’s adventure takes him back through some of his most iconic moments, but with the addition of brand-new mechanics that set the game apart.

One of the most exciting changes in Shadow Generations is the introduction of DOOM powers. These new abilities, like the DOOM spear, allow Shadow to attack enemies from a distance, adding a tactical layer to the game that contrasts Sonic’s speed-focused approach. These powers also provide versatile movement options, making both the hub world and the main levels feel fresh and dynamic. While the core gameplay remains true to the fast-paced nature of a Sonic game, these new abilities keep things feeling distinct and engaging throughout Shadow’s adventure.

The white space hub area in Shadow Generations is another highlight. Borrowing elements from Sonic Frontiers, the open world here is far more refined and enjoyable. Instead of a sprawling, aimless space, the hub is more compact and interactive, featuring optional puzzles and numerous collectibles. The space evolves as players progress, which keeps exploration fun and rewarding. There’s a wealth of extras to uncover, including lore, concept art, and music, which gives players more incentive to slow down and explore the world at their own pace.

Collectibles and Replay-ability

One of the standout features of Shadow Generations is its focus on collectibles. Every level contains three hidden tokens, giving players a reason to revisit stages beyond simply beating their fastest times. This adds a layer of strategy, encouraging players to take different routes and explore new paths in search of these items. The collectible aspect adds depth and longevity to the game, offering a perfect balance between speedrunning and careful exploration.

This combination of high-speed action and exploration makes Shadow Generations more than just a copy of Sonic Generations. It encourages players to think differently about how they approach each level, with the option to either race through or slow down and hunt for secrets. The incentive to collect everything gives players a reason to come back again and again, much like the original Generations.

Visuals: Stunning Worlds with a Mix of Hits and Misses

Visually, both Sonic and Shadow Generations are a treat, although there are a few areas where they could have been improved. The remastered Sonic Generations looks better than ever, with its vibrant, remade classic levels standing out as some of the best-designed in the series. The stages remain visually intuitive, ensuring that players can keep up with the fast-paced action without losing their way.

In Shadow Generations, the white space hub world is a major improvement over the open world in Sonic Frontiers. It’s simple yet beautiful, with evolving visual changes that keep the player engaged. While some stages in Shadow Generations are stunning and a joy to replay, a few are less memorable, with designs that don’t quite match the visual polish of the best levels. Nevertheless, the majority of the game looks fantastic, and the intuitive stage layouts ensure that even the less impressive visuals don’t detract from the overall experience.

Final Verdict: A Solid 9/10 and a Must-Buy for Fans

In the end, Sonic x Shadow generations is a must-have for Sonic fans. Sonic Generations remains one of the best Sonic games of all time, and the addition of Shadow Generations elevates this package to a whole new level. The new mechanics and collectibles in Shadow’s adventure add depth and replay-ability, while the visual upgrades and refined hub world make it clear that SEGA has learned from its past mistakes, especially when compared to Sonic Frontiers. This is a perfect time to hop in and catch up on Shadows story before the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie later this year.

Given the price tag of £44.99 ($58.70) at launch for the standard edition.

With a nearly flawless remaster of Sonic Generations and a well-crafted new experience in Shadow Generations, this game earns a solid 9/10. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the series, this collection offers something for everyone. Given the price tag of £44.99 ($58.70) at launch for the standard edition, and given you get two fantastic Sonic games for that price it is a worthy addition to any library.

Sonic x Shadow generations releases worldwide on all major consoles on October 25th 2024.

Review: CLICKid SNAP10 Digital Photo Frame

The CLICKid SNAP10 Digital Photo Frame from CLICKid is an impressive device. I’ve used digital photo frames before and I haven’t been happy. They are clunky, cumbersome, and just a niche product. Accordingly, when I was offered this to review, I didn’t know what to think. Luckily though, it is the perfect companion to both the CLICKid CAM20 and the CLICKid CAM10. Alternatively, if you love to snap photos on your smartphone, this is a great device to show off your favourite shots.

This deceptively simple photo frame is packed full of wonderful tech. It has auto-rotation, motion sensors, a remote control for a straightforward approach, and hidden storage ports. Moreover, it has a touch display to give it that modern edge. This feature was great, but I always had to clean it as kids and touchscreens to not mix. Yet, this is a minor complaint and maybe I should demand my kids clean their fingers before they touch the screen.

What’s in the box of the CLICKid SNAP10 Digital Photo Frame?

  • The packaging wasn’t as compact as I first thought. However, it looks nice and it can be recycled.
  • The CLICKid SNAP10 Digital Photo Frame is slim and pleasant to the eye. The sleek black surround is modern and the hidden ports help to maintain a streamlined approach.
  • A kickstand is great if you want to have this on a flat surface.
  • The remote control prevents dirty fingers from making the screen filthy.
  • A power cable and adapter are provided.
  • Learn the basics with the user manual.

Technical aspects.

The CLICKid SNAP10 Digital Photo Frame follows a traditional photo frame style and an incredibly modern approach. The latter allows friends and family to share images directly to your photo frame. If you wish to do this, you need to install the free-to-download app and share an access code with any friends. Here, they can send you images that can be stored on the whooping 32 GB of internal storage. The internal storage allows you to store thousands of images or hours of video footage. This was fantastic as my kids could capture photos with their friends and then send them directly to the device with minimal effort.

Once photos are installed onto the device, you may alter them to your liking. Whether you wish them to fit the full display, or to have a pleasant border, it is up to you. I didn’t play too much with these settings as I was happy to let the photos scroll as they were in the slideshow. However, if you wish to adjust anything at any time, you can access each photo from the menu and change it to your liking.

This photo frame supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi for a straightforward connection. Furthermore, the touchscreen has 10-point actuation and is responsive and easy to set up. Finally, the high-definition IPS Panel has an 800/1280 resolution that can be viewed from a wide angle.

Display quality.

My past experiences with digital photo frames haven’t been good! The picture quality has been poor and I was always in a losing battle. Fortunately, the CLICKid SNAP10 Digital Photo Frame is different. The picture quality is vivid and pleasant to look at. Additionally, the high-definition IPS panel can be viewed from different points. Accordingly, if you sit this on your bedside table, you will be able to see it from multiple locations without undermining the picture quality.

Usability.

I was impressed by the straightforward set-up and the responsive touch display. Moreover, the app was great and I loved to see whatever photos were sent to the device. Word of warning, if you have friends with a naughty sense of humour, you may wish to censor or check the images before you allow them into your slideshow.

Though the touchscreen was great, I liked the simplicity of the remote control. Flicking through your images and video footage was amazing. Moreover, starting and stopping each video or adjusting the content was a cinch. The remote is well-labelled and mastering the basics was an easy task.

Build quality.

The CLICKid SNAP10 Digital Photo Frame will look great on your wall or a table. The sleek frame is pleasant to the eye and I loved the vibrant display. Furthermore, the hidden ports keep things streamlined. My only complaint is the lack of a built-in battery. This would have tidied things up further and I’d have preferred this option. However, the power cable is slim and it is easy to hide if this is stood on a desk. If you wall mount it, you will have to create a cable management system to keep things tidy.

The rear ports are robust and using a USB storage or memory card is straightforward. I had no issues or concerns that either would become damaged as you removed them from the photo frame. The frame is made of a hardened plastic and can take a few knocks. Yet, I’d be careful not to hit the screen as it could cause permanent damage to the touchpoints.

Is the CLICKid SNAP10 Digital Photo Frame worth it?

I thought digital photo frames were a 00s fad. As such, I’ve never considered how much things have changed. Thankfully, this digital photo frame changed my perspective. It delivers an incredible experience that brings friends together. Furthermore, it is easy to use and has a nice modern aesthetic. Yes, I wish there was a built-in battery, but this is a minor complaint. Accordingly, I like it, and I recommend buying it here!

Review: Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- Sweep the Board!

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- Sweep the Board! is a bizarre blend of Mario Party action and Anime madness. This strange combination shouldn’t have worked, but occasionally it did. I’m not the biggest anime fan, so many of the crazy nuances were lost on me. However, I am familiar with Demon Slayer, so I was able to identify the key locations and the protagonists. If you have no interest in this Anime series, you can still enjoy the mini-games and the odd action.

This Anime board game experience was developed by Cyberconnect2 and published by SEGA. Moreover, it can be enjoyed alone or with 3 other gamers. If, like me, you tend to play alone, the spare spaces are filled with NPC demon slayers. Though this sounds great, there is an imbalance in the gameplay model that drives you insane. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if the developers can balance things, but it is a shortcoming that disappointed me.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- Sweep the Board! is a game of 2 halves.

Due to the short board game nature, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- Sweep the Board! has no plot. Instead, the unfolding action and protagonist’s character traits take centre stage. This was perfect for Demon Slayer fans as you can hear the sound bites of your favourite characters. Additionally, their personalities shine through and this will make you smile. However, if you have no idea what I’m talking about, you won’t understand the little snippets of lore.

This could be problematic as the game offers little depth. Additionally, unlike other board games, the mini-game aspect is as deep as a puddle. This was a shame as I love the 3 maps and the demonic layer. Unfortunately, each mini-game lacks finesse and they are mostly a combination of button bashing.

Where Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- Sweep the Board! shines is its 2 part action. As each hero romps around the board, they must aim for a goal square. Once you hit this mark, you earn special ranking points that can level each character. Furthermore, the action turns from day to night and here is where the demons come to play.

Demonic beings.

The nighttime aspect was great. The demonic square offers a chance to tackle the evil overlord in a crazy mini-game. This should have been amazing, but most of the opportunities focus on mashing buttons or a weird combination of inputs. Yet, once you thwart the beast, they go into hiding and the gameplay loop begins again.

This almost tedious approach quickly became tiresome. However, when I played it with friends, I loved it a little bit more. The competitive edge shines through and the mini-games were enjoyable. Annoyingly, the aforementioned lack of balance between NPC and humans is overbearing and you never feel like you have a chance.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- Sweep the Board! misses a trick.

Anime and Manga are renowned for an exceptional visual experience. Disappointingly, Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- Sweep the Board! misses a trick. The environment is fantastic and the locations are easily identifiable. However, the characters lack detail and the animation is slow and cumbersome. Understandably, this was way below my expectations and I hoped for better. Luckily, the demonic encounters were good, but this left me wondering why the core gameplay was so ugly.

The audio utilises key sound bites from each protagonist. Additionally, there is larger-than-life music and sound effects to complete the package. If you are not a fan of the franchise, you’ll find this pretty annoying. Yet, if you follow Demon Slayer, you’ll feel right at home. Consequently, it’s a bit of a mixed bag.

Weird controls.

The overworld is an easy place to navigate. The simple UI and dice mechanics will not take you by surprise. However, the mini-games are a weird mixture of button bashing and strange inputs. This approach was bizarre and it makes the action unnecessarily complex. Moreover, it can be frustrating to play. Subsequently, I found myself getting extremely annoyed as things didn’t go to plan.

If you have like-minded friends, you’ll enjoy the banter and the competitive edge. Furthermore, if you love the franchise, there is plenty to keep you interested. However, if you are a solo gamer or you have never heard of Demon Slayer, you are in for a rough ride. Accordingly, replay value and longevity will depend on which camp you sit in.

Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- Sweep the Board! doesn’t quite get it right.

I’m on the fence with this board game experience. On one hand, it is colourful and it captures the theme perfectly. However, the games lack an edge and the control system isn’t good. What’s more, the attention to detail is lacking. Sadly, there are too many shortcomings and I cannot recommend it as a consequence. Yet, more information can be found here! Can you defeat the demons? Pick your slayer, romp around the board, and become infamous.

Review: CIDOO QK61 keyboard

The CIDOO QK61 keyboard from Epomaker is a compact and easy-to-use device. Furthermore, it has tri-mode connectivity and simple-to-understand features. This is the ideal option for anyone who wants a portable and plug-and-play peripheral. This was great if you need to work on your commute but you don’t like those tiny foldable devices. Instead, you can slide this keyboard into your bag and it won’t take up much room.

On top of this, customisation is a key concern for Epomaker. This device has hot-swappable switches for both 3 and 5-pin options. This was impressive as you can customise your device without the use of solder. Furthermore, though this is a 60% form factor peripheral, it has all the power of a full-size alternative. Thanks to VIA programming, you may alter the macros and inputs to whatever your heart desires.

What’s in the box of the CIDOO QK61 keyboard?

  • The tiny box has a simple but pleasant design. Furthermore, it is reasonably robust and this keeps the contents safe
  • The CIDOO QK61 keyboard comes in two colourways. I picked the white option, but there is a black livery if this appeals to you. The design is sleek and streamlined. Moreover, the transparent enter and ESC key have a retro feel. These can be swapped out if you don’t like this look.
  • A keycap puller is provided.
  • Charge the device with the USB cable.
  • Spare keys can be used if you don’t like the transparent ones.
  • Learn the basics with the user manual.

Technical aspects.

This tri-mode keyboard is perfect if you like to work or game at home and you need to work on your commute. The 3 options are easy to select thanks to the tactile rear switch. Additionally, the USB dongle is housed within the keyboard, so you shouldn’t lose it when you are out and about. The wired approach was simple to set up and it’s great if you are staying put for a while. Alternatively, either of the wireless options was a cinch to get going. All of the connectivity choices offer low-latency typing and gaming. Accordingly, you must pick which mode suits your needs.

Whenever you connect wirelessly, battery life is a concern. Thankfully, this comes with an impressive 3,000 mAh battery life. This large capacity is suitable for lengthy gaming sessions and can be charged easily using the provided USB cable. If you are concerned about battery status, you can use the FN key to highlight the remaining battery life. On top of this, if you run low on juice, the FN key flashes to highlight the issue.

Epomaker provides their CIDOO Pearl White Switches as standard. These comfortable switches have a pleasant actuation distance and there is a nice tactile and responsive nature whenever you type or game. If you have a preferred switch type, you can remove these with ease and replace them with whatever compatible alternative you like.

Usability.

The CIDOO QK61 keyboard is an extremely user-friendly device. Though it may not be as advanced as some other gaming keyboards, it is perfectly serviceable and it will appeal to a large audience. The triple connectivity is great and the simple but effective tactile switch was easy to handle. On top of this, if you want to change the macros or inputs, this was a straightforward task.

Build quality.

This keyboard costs less than £50! As such, you’d think that Epomaker would cut corners. However, this isn’t the case. It is a device that has a substantial weight and it feels robust. Moreover, the typing experience is comfortable thanks to the Cherry Profile Double Shot PBT Keycaps. These familiar keycaps have a nice profile that is ideal for typing and gaming. What’s more, the font will not fade and the white will resist dirt and wear and tear longer than its competitors.

If you have a tiny workstation or you simply want more room for sweeping mouse movements, then this is the device for you. This keyboard uses a 60% form factor for a truly compact experience. Though this may worry you, it shouldn’t. The exceptional FN and macroing functionality allow you to execute every command a full-sized keyboard offers. Consequently, you get the design you like without compromising your worktop space.

I adore the sound of mechanical keyboards. Thankfully, the CIDOO QK61 keyboard has a delightful clunky sound. This is enhanced thanks to the multi-layered acoustic materials. Furthermore, the polycarbonate PC plate creates a sense of flexibility whilst enhancing that clacky noise. Finally, the gasket mount isolates the switches from the case. This was important as it reduces vibration and enhances that glorious old-school sound.

Is the CIDOO QK61 keyboard worth it?

If you are in the market for a gaming keyboard, you are spoilt for choice. There are full-sized, mid-sized, and tiny compact keyboards available. Furthermore, you can have vibrant and unusual designs or something a little understated. Thankfully, this device sits nicely in the middle. The south-facing RGB creates a pleasant light show without being too garish.

Moreover, the keycaps and switches are comfortable to use and I love the tri-mode connectivity. Subsequently, I think this is great value and an ideal choice for anyone who wishes to have a plug-and-play experience. As such, I recommend buying it here!

Review: Burnhouse Lane

Burnhouse Lane title

October has been filled with the glow of the bright pumpkin-colored “Hunter’s Moon” and a series of tricks, treats, and terrors. What would be better than to enhance the mood with more hands-on horror and goriness?

For fans of blood and gore, but want something more interactive than Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Terrifier, you might be wanting a lineup of video games to play as the days toward Halloween dwindles away. Developed and published by Feardemic and Harvester games, Burnhouse Lane, a “spiritual sequel” to The Cat Lady, is sure to pique some interest. Burnhouse Lane is a survival action-adventure gamed filled with spooky puzzles, gory scenes, and a choose your own adventure-style narrative.

The game can be played on steam, PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PS5, Xbox One, and the Xbox Series X/S.

Hospice in Hell

Play as Angie Weather, an agency nurse suffering from terminal cancer, on the verge of passing. Her partner had passed away from the same fate some time ago. They had always wanted to travel to Japan together, so Angie takes on her final job to care after George, an elder who lives on a tucked away farm, hoping to earn enough money to travel before her life ends. Players will oscillate between farm life with George and his community neighbors like sheep herder Ciaran, to a seemingly phantasmagoric town called “Burnhouse Lane.” The latter is essentially a purgatory for “sick” people.

Angie Weather and her husband, who passed away from terminal cancer.

The story is filled with antonymous themes of evil and good; of life and death; and of hope and suffering. There are seven chapters in the game, each featuring a somewhat digressive plotline, though all filled with somberness and Angie’s goal of “winning her life back.”

Having elements of choose your own adventure, players will be able to select different dialogue choices. You can play nice, force information out of others with “Mr. Gray’s charge” ability, or remain apathetic towards the universe’s dilemmas. Depending on what you choose, there will be branching additions or submissions from the narrative and an ultimate one of three endings.

The seven deadly chapters

Burnhouse Lane incorporates several styles of gameplay, including solving puzzles (there are five major ones to solve in order to complete the game), as well as instances of stealth-based combat, aiming and shooting a gun, mild platforming, but majorly the game is a point-and-click. It is a wide variety, but not to the point where the game is not sure of what it wants to be. The genres work together coherently and smoothly.

Angie and Mr. Gray in Burnhouse Lane

However, the mechanics feel quite sluggish. Playing as Angie feels . . . slow, as if there is a sort of horizontal gravity working against the player. Toggling through the inventory is also slow and clunky. Even when a certain scene emits a sense of urgency, pulling up the inventory destroys all semblance of that feeling.

To save the game, Angie will need to smoke a cigarette at a nearby ashtray. They appear frequently, but if you happen to miss it or just not save the game for a while, Burnhouse Lane can be rather boring to repeat. The game segments are not re-playable for enjoyment reasons. Once the puzzle is solved, there’s not more to it. Unless you want to restart and go through different dialogue options for alternate endings, Burnhouse Lane is a slog to get through all over again.

A tale of gore and grim

Burnhouse Lane‘s art style is bizarrely fascinating. The game features a visual mix of hand-drawn imagery and realistic cut-and-paste photos, giving off an eerie, strange, and satisfying surrealism. There are tons of blatant gore as well.

Horrifying image in Burnhouse Lane

The game is fully voice-acted, and it sounds pretty natural. While the voiced dialogue can slow down the game, it adds more realism and immersion into the setting. The sound design was lead by micAmic and others. The music does not particularly stand out, but it will certainly give players the creeps. It is “atmospheric” to say the least.

Trapped in purgatory

There is a content warning for this title. Burnhouse Lane includes a myriad of sensitive topics ranging from violence, homicide, dementia, overindulgence, terminal illness, to suicide. It is very much not for the faint of heart.

Mr. Gray talking about death form Burnhouse Lane

A big issue I have with the game is that the fantastical elements do not seem to serve as a symbol for anything specifically. Each chapter has its own different story and set of characters for the most part, varying in quality. Some chapters are thought-provoking tear-jerkers, while others are kind of lazy and heavily tropey. Playing as a cancer victim hardly serves much purpose. Angie attends to George for money, and she is able to enter Burnhouse Lane due to her terminal illness. Her ultimate goal is to complete five huge tasks to mystically overcome her fated death . . . which feels almost tone deaf. There is no “magical cure” to cancer, and maybe this would not be so uncomfortable if these tasks had any allusion to Angie’s actual struggles.

Angie Weather has 6 months left to live with terminal cancer

Playing as a lonely, diseased, suicidal woman is intense for no clear reason, especially since all the other characters come with their own onslaught of issues. Burnhouse Lane feels like it is trying too hard to be dark and deep. It would make more sense if the storyline reflected Angie Weather’s life and problems, specifically her cancer . . . but it just doesn’t. The plotlines instead center around the typical “kill the bad guy” and emphasize the grotesqueness of fatness to an almost offensive degree.

Final thoughts

I will say that Burnhouse Lane kickstarted the spooky season for me, and I did enjoy the peculiar cast of characters, the creepy art direction, and the couple of interesting stories like the “Bloody Mary” chapter and all the interactions with Jenny. But, there were also chapters like “The Little Lamb Eats the Wolf,” which was insanely stereotypical and shallow. Pastor Rob is a psychopathic, sadistic serial predator that Angie (of all people) needs to exterminate. Oh, okay.

Blood in Angie Weather's hand

There are three endings, one of which is the “golden” ending. I am unsure as to why this is considered the best outcome. Without spoiling, the golden ending feels unfulfilling and hamfisted. There are bittersweet and realistic moments between characters but overall it just did not feel right. It almost undermines the deep struggles of terminal cancer and the face of death, in my opinion.

Personally, I am not too attached to Burnhouse Lane. The chapters do not flow together well, the gameplay is sluggish, and the motifs are overly off-putting. However, the visual design is something to behold and the voice-acting is a great touch. The characters are dynamic and ever-evolving and the atmosphere will certainly get players into a dark, Halloween-ready mood.

Review: Bloodhound

Bloodhound is an iconic game. The old-school imagery and aggressive music match the never-ending hordes of monsters and the fast-paced action. This title is reminiscent of the ’90s and ’00s FPS experiences, so if you are a fan of this category, you’ll adore the gruesome and relentless madness that unfolds.

This FPS title was developed and published by Kruger & Flint Productions. Furthermore, it is a single-player game that is loaded with guns, gore, and demonic beings. The arsenal of weapons is impressive and the array of harsh monsters is better still. Moreover, there are plenty of bosses to defeat and loads of grim layers of hell to explore. Accordingly, though it doesn’t tread any fresh ground, it is a gruelling and daunting experience, nonetheless.

Bloodhound tells a demonic tale. jjj

The Cult of Astaroth are hell-bent on unleashing demonic creatures into the world. These mental cultists wish to upend the balance and create hell on earth. However, they didn’t expect the Order of Keepers of the Gate to stand in their way. This bullish group have no qualms about grabbing a gun and annihilating everything they see.

This simple plot is as deep as a puddle. However, when you are killing everything in sight, it matters not. I adore the brutal nature of each stage and the gloriously pixelated graphics. Furthermore, the ear-splitting sound effects will make you smile. If you then add in the ridiculous arsenal of weapons, you get a game that is unbelievably violent and brilliantly absurd in equal measures.

The hero looks a demonic sign in Bloodhound.

Too much, too soon.

Though the introduction of never-ending monsters was great, the developer has dumped weapon after weapon at your feet. In theory, this is great, but you never truly get to experiment. As new toys are added, I find myself dumping my existing arsenal. This was a shame as everything felt rushed.

The constant battles follow this path as well. Exploration should be at the fore, but you rarely get a chance to take in your surroundings. As soon as one battle is concluded, another begins. Now, this was great if you enjoy a skirmish, but it was a bit too much for my liking. The lack of downtime and the one-upmanship quickly outstayed its welcome. Consequently, it would have been better to keep some powder dry and allow a few quiet patches to dominate proceedings.

Bloodhound is brilliantly old-school.

I’m of an age that adores pixelated and gross FPS titles. Doom springs to mind whenever I discuss this genre. However, Bloodhound does an incredible job of capturing this essence. I adored the low-quality graphics and the spouts of blood. Additionally, if you love to massacre your fallen foes, you can do so at pleasure. The linear gameplay pushes you through each demonic location and you soon become immune to the shock factor. This was a shame as I enjoyed the dark touches and the interesting stage design.

If you love thrash metal and uncomfortable sound effects, Bloodhound will appeal to you. The soundtrack is beyond incredible and I could listen to it repeatedly. What’s more, the weird noises that come from your opponents will make you laugh, especially when you shoot them in the face with a shotgun.

Pick your weapon and take down the demons in Bloodhound.

Clunky controls.

The developer has focused on an old-school experience. Accordingly, the controls have a delightful clunky nature that may confuse modern gamers. However, retro-loving players will adore the lack of polish. Though things weren’t that smooth, it was easy to master and shooting every fast-moving foe becomes an enjoyable challenge.

Replay value and longevity aren’t at the fore. Once you smash your way through the action, I’m not sure there are many reasons to return. There are an array of difficulty settings and plenty of achievements to unlock. Yet, the action rarely changes and this creates an unfortunate sense of deja vu.

Bloodhound is a classic FPS.

Though the controls and lack of replay value may disappoint, Bloodhound is a classic FPS. The gore, guts, and violence are complemented by the exceptional soundtrack. The audio is the best aspect of this game and I’d happily listen to it on repeat. If you love retro shooters, this should be on your list. Consequently, I recommend buying it here! Can you extinguish the demonic cult? Grab your guns, kill your foes, and relish every violent moment.
