Review: Assassin’s creed Shadows

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is undeniably a modern Assassin’s Creed title, fitting firmly within the RPG era of the franchise. From the moment I jumped into the game, I found myself enjoying it immensely.

Visuals & World Design

The game looks absolutely stunning. The recreation of feudal Japan is incredible, with an immense amount of detail put into the world design. Whether exploring castles, villages, or countryside, the atmosphere is immersive. The animations for both parkour and combat are fluid and remain enjoyable even 60 hours into the game. Armor, weapons, and character designs are all well-crafted and fitting for the setting.

Traveling on horseback, however, taught me one important lesson: stick to the roads. While there are numerous activities, random events, and hidden tombs or shrines along the way, the dense mountains and forests make off-road travel nearly impossible, with little reward for trying to cut a journey short.

One of the game’s standout features is the introduction of seasons, which change dynamically over time. These seasonal shifts aren’t just visual; they impact gameplay as well. For example, in winter, ponds that Naoe could previously hide in freeze over, turning into hazardous ice that affects combat and movement.

Equipment & Loot System

The equipment system takes a step back compared to Valhalla. Rather than collecting and upgrading full Armor sets, Shadows reverts to a more Diablo-style loot system akin to Origins and Odyssey. Players frequently pick up new weapons and Armor with higher stats. However, legendary items are unique, one-time pickups found in enemy strongholds. These legendary items unlock “engravings,” which can be transferred to other weapons at the forge. These engravings range from basic percentage stat boosts to incredibly overpowered mechanics.

Different engravings on equipment can significantly alter a player’s build, allowing for a more tailored combat experience. When multiple pieces of equipment are equipped with complementing engravings, the result is a highly satisfying power spike. This encourages players to experiment with different combinations, rewarding those who strategically plan their loadouts and explore the world to find more legendries to provide devastating synergies that can enhance both offense and defence.

Combat & Playstyle Differences

Combat is fun and engaging, and when it starts to feel stale, the ability to switch weapons—each with distinct mechanics—keeps things fresh. The game’s two protagonists, Naoe and Yasuke, feel fundamentally different. Yasuke is a powerful samurai with a direct approach to combat, while Naoe, as a shinobi, specializes in stealth and agility.

I found myself switching a lot since you can do so at pretty much any time while in the open world. I actually can’t decide which I prefer more, Story wise they both have engaging stories and I cannot chose one over the other. Gameplay wise, I love running through rooftops inside and enemy castle under the cover of the night and taking unsuspecting enemies until there are none left to protect my target. Playing as Naoe makes me feel like I’m the predator in a horror game. Where as busting down a gate as the one man army Yasuke and dismembering everyone that tries to stop me is a fun power trip.

Characters & Storytelling

Naoe and Yasuke not only play differently but also have vastly different worldviews. Naoe is driven by revenge, often ruthless in her decisions, while Yasuke is more compassionate, creating tension between the two. It was genuinely interesting to uncover both of their pasts and accompany them throughout their journey. In classic Assassin’s Creed fashion, the main story revolves around taking down a group of primary targets. However, this entry introduces a wide variety of organizations and enemy factions to battle beyond the main storyline, making for a deeper and more layered experience.

That being said, there are moments where player choices feel meaningful. For instance, while preparing to assassinate a target, I overheard villagers discussing how grateful they were for the target’s presence. This prompted me to investigate further, leading to the discovery that the target had changed their ways. Instead of killing them, I was given an option to spare them—a subtle but powerful feature that encourages players to pay close attention to their surroundings and NPC conversations.

Naoe and Yasuke not only play differently but also have vastly different worldviews. Naoe is driven by revenge, often ruthless in her decisions, while Yasuke is more compassionate, creating tension between the two. While some missions allow players to choose whose decision to follow (e.g., killing with Naoe or sparing with Yasuke), the actual impact of these choices seems limited. In one instance, despite making a different decision, the outcome remained the same, with the only variation being a dialogue exchange between the characters.

Base Building & Customization

The household base-building system in Shadows expands upon Valhalla’s settlement mechanics. Players start with a basic house and stable but can gradually build up their land with additional buildings that provide new mechanics and passive buffs. The forge, for example, allows weapon upgrades and transmog options. There are plenty of other buildings that can be freely placed, customized, and utilized for various benefits. For players who enjoy base-building, there’s a wealth of cosmetic decorations and pets to find, buy, and place around the grounds.

Throughout your journey, you will encounter various allies who can be recruited to gain both active skills and passive bonuses when upgraded. These allies are not automatically available; instead, you must complete their side quests, which often involve complex objectives and moral choices. Depending on your decisions, there are ways to fail in recruiting them, as some choices can cause them to reject your offer. This system adds an extra layer to those that join your cause.

Final Thoughts

Assassin’s Creed Shadows delivers a visually stunning, immersive experience with dynamic gameplay changes through its seasons, dual-character system, and engaging combat mechanics. While the loot system may not be for everyone, and story choices don’t always have significant consequences, the game still offers plenty of depth and rewarding exploration. Whether you’re here for the stealth, the samurai combat, or the world-building, Shadows provides a solid entry in the Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Review: TSW5 London Overground Mildmay Line

Train Sim World is renowned for its after-market DLC. Though this is a divisive topic, I like extending a base game with relevant and fresh content. Today I’m looking at the TSW5 London Overground Mildmay Line pack. This detailed option allows train enthusiasts to drive over the iconic North London route. Moreover, you may test your skills as you drive a classic BR Class 378 EMU.

This train-driving simulation game was developed by Incredible Trains and published by Dovetail Games. It is a single-player experience that allows gamers to drive trains and explore each station en route. Additionally, there are minor tasks and plenty of train-driving scenarios to complete. Finally, you may take time in a realistic timetable challenge or enjoy the sandbox mode.

TSW5 London Overground Mildmay Line adds plenty of content.

It is difficult to put into words how much content the TSW5 London Overground Mildmay Line DLC adds to the base game. Effectively, you can get as much or as little as you like from this interesting addition. I’m originally from London and I’ve passed over this route plenty of times. However, unlike other train driving routes, I’ve never driven this one in real life. Consequently, I was fascinated to see the signal locations and the different challenges my London colleagues face regularly.

The basic concept doesn’t move too far from what you’ve already enjoyed when playing TSW5. You are free to jump into the action or dive into the training school to get a helping hand. Alternatively, you can complete 1 of 5 tailormade scenarios to tune your skills. Either way, you will become a virtual expert on this particular route by the time you’ve completed every goal.

Realistic action.

TSW5 London Overground Mildmay Line is a combination of realism and flaws. This was tough to accept as I enjoyed the base game and found it to be extremely well-polished. Unfortunately, this DLC doesn’t hit those heights, and fans of the franchise will be rightly annoyed.

The core concept is as realistic and in-depth as you’d expect. The controls are phenomenal and successfully starting, moving, and stopping are achievements by themselves. If you then consider every safety system you must adhere to, it is a real challenge to keep on top of every aspect. TSW5 London Overground Mildmay Line is ultra-realistic in this regard. Safety systems can be isolated for an easier time, but hardcore enthusiasts will push themselves to the limits.

TSW5 London Overground Mildmay Line lacks life and passengers. For reasons unknown, passengers do not board your train. Furthermore, they miraculously appear on the platform or disappear in a puff of smoke. It was very bizarre and completely counterintuitive to the other highly realistic ideas. Luckily, the audio is strong and every sound is accurate. Moreover, the glorious ambient noises will bring a smile to your face.

Drive your EMU across the outskirts of London in TSW5 London Overground Mildmay Line.

Exceptional controls.

Though I have my complaints, the controls aren’t one of them. The clear UI and well-explained driving school ensure that newbie train drivers and hardcore enthusiasts will be up and running in no time. This isn’t to say you won’t have issues, but a methodical mindset should keep the wheels rolling.

Replay value, longevity, and value for money are up for debate. I wasn’t disappointed by the length of each run or the tasks on offer. However, I know people will moan about the cost-to-hours ratio. Furthermore, 1 extra traction for around £25 could be poor value.

TSW5 London Overground Mildmay Line is a good addition to the franchise.

I’m not a spotter and I cannot identify whether the developer or publisher has identified every minor flaw. I have to accept the level of detail to be accurate and I hope the routes and train layout are practically perfect. To this end, I think that TSW5 London Overground Mildmay Line is a good addition to the franchise. Yes, I have my complaints about the random passenger issue, but the rest of the action is to a high standard. Accordingly, I like this DLC package and I recommend buying it here! Do you want to drive a classic train across an iconic route? Grab your driver key, pull on your uniform, and enjoy the demands of London train driving.

Review: TSW5 Cardiff City Network

I have recently covered the TSW5 London Overground Mildmay Line and scored it an 8.5 out of 10. I loved every element except for the passenger loading and a lack of energy. Consequently, when I was offered the TSW5 Cardiff City Network DLC, I was a little apprehensive. I hoped that the Welsh passengers wouldn’t let me down, and I can gladly say they didn’t. This latest DLC ticks many boxes and train enthusiasts will love it.

Dovetail Games developed and published this single-player train-driving simulator. It is the first time Welsh routes have been included in this much-loved franchise and it has some amazing scenic tracks to drive across. Moreover, lovers of old-school DMUs will enjoy or endure both class 150 and 153s. These bone rattlers are loud, smelly, and reasonably uncomfortable. However, you have the best seat in the house, so sit back and enjoy the view.

TSW5 Cardiff City Network will make many people smile.

Driving from the Welsh capital into the iconic but deprived valleys was a treat. Additionally, exploring Canton Depot and traversing some challenging scenarios was incredible. Whether you drive Cardiff Queen Street to Cardiff Bay or along the Merthyr lines, you will not be disappointed. The rattle of each DMU as it slowly moves across rural tracks was brilliant. Furthermore, I loved stopping to explore each station en route.

This DLC has seen some new improvements that will impress train enthusiasts. The eye for detail brings each traction bang up to date. Sockets, livery, door panels, bathrooms, and bike racks match modern rolling stock. What’s more, the cab layout is remarkably accurate and I loved the use of mimic indicators and retro switches for the lighting controls.

Plenty of scenarios.

Gamers will adore TSW5 Cardiff City Network’s content. 5 scenarios, loads of weather fronts, and challenging moments await budding virtual train drivers. On top of this, you can freely drive to your heart’s content or tackle one of hundreds of timetabled services. There is coupling and uncoupling to complete, St David’s Day to celebrate, and biblical weather to contend with.

Though some of the scenarios may seem a little far-fetched, the action was ultra-realistic. Hardcore fans can keep the safety systems rolling as they test their skills. Alternatively, the systems can be isolated for a more relaxed experience. Either way, you will adore the sense of speed and the pressure a modern train driver faces.

TSW5 Cardiff City Network has exceptional graphics.

Wales isn’t called God’s country for no reason. Despite the ever-present woeful weather, it is a beautiful land. The lush green fields race by and the pretty towns highlight the wonderful history of this proud nation. Though the modern city landscape isn’t that attractive, I loved the developers’ focus on detail and the exceptional realism.

The audio blends incredible train noises with stunning ambient sounds. The ping of your AWS or the sound of the wheels profiling never gets old. I adored the accurate hustle alarms and the shrill but necessary sound of the horn. In short, TSW5 Cardiff City Network sounds impeccable.

Exceptional controls.

I’ve played TSW for years and the controls are always tight and easy to understand. Additionally, I have driven both 150s and 153s across the Cornish mainline and Falmouth and St Ives branches. As such, the familiar layout wasn’t a challenge. Yet, if you have not driven a train before, you will not struggle to master the inputs.

Replay value will depend on your desire to witness every mile and chain. If DMUs are not your thing, you may struggle with the rattling and the slow acceleration and braking. However, if you want to see Wales from a driver’s point of view, you will return for hours of driving.

TSW5 Cardiff City Network is a great addition.

It has been a long time coming, but this Welsh addition to the franchise was worth the wait. TSW5 Cardiff City Network is unbelievably good and train enthusiasts will adore the chance to explore some incredible locations. Aesthetically it is pleasing and I love the attention to detail. Accordingly, it is worth every penny and I recommend buying it here! Can you master the DMU and explore God’s country? Pick up your driver’s key, study your route, and get to work.

Review: C1450M Williams Racing Race Set

It is that time of year again when the F1 hype starts taking hold! No one knows what the new season will bring and excitement and anticipation are at an all-time high. Will your favourite team come out of the stalls and win, or will the race favourites run away with it for another season? Whatever the outcome, there is a way to bring the fun and energy of F1 into your house. The C1450M Williams Racing Race Set is an exceptional Scalextric set from the Hornby Hobbies brand. Not only does it look incredible, but the build quality is out of this world. Accordingly, excited fans young and old can enjoy some racing fun no matter how heavy-handed they are.

This striking set incorporates 2 Williams FW45 cars from the 2023 season with Logan Sargeant and Alexander Albon. Though this season wasn’t the most impressive as the team only banked 28 points, the design and livery were eye-catching. Additionally, many would argue that the team had a run of bad luck and the car never got the respect it deserved. Luckily, you can rectify that issue when you invest in this exceptional Scalextric race track.

What’s in the box of the C1450M Williams Racing Race Set?

  • The packaging is large and robust. Consequently, it is hard-wearing and the contents are well protected.
  • The C1450M Williams Racing Race Set does not disappoint. The set comprises 10 track pieces and 4 possible track layouts.
  • 2 ergonomic controllers are provided.
  • Track supports and a braid pack are included in the box.
  • Power the set with the transformer and powerbase.
  • A guide helps you with the track layouts.

A trip down memory lane.

Scalextric was a gaming staple growing up. The smell, noise, and fun of constructing every track was a phenomenal rite of passage. Though modern Scalextric sets are bigger, heavier, and more impressive, they have that incredible nostalgic edge that drags every adult back to their childhood. Furthermore, there is something magical about the tactile and simple nature of each race.

Theoretically, your race could be over in moments. After all, it is 2 cars whizzing around a small racetrack. However, in reality, you lose hours as everyone in your household wants to get involved. Whether you love racing or not, once the track is set up, it is irresistible! The sense of competition and drive brings out an animalistic instinct. There is no letting your kids win and no taking part medal is awarded. The C1450M Williams Racing Race Set is all about the glory and racing for the win.

Usability.

Adults should be patient, but that is rarely the case. When you have something as cool as a Scalextric to play with, you want to dive right in. Thankfully, the C1450M Williams Racing Race Set is extremely easy to set up. Moreover, the guide ensures that you can test each of the 4 layouts with ease. If you are new to the brand, you may wish to take your time so you do not damage the click-to-connect parts. However, if this isn’t your first rodeo, you’ll be up and running in no time.

Keeping on top of your laps and the winner can be tricky. After all, the cars race around the track at lightning speed. Thankfully, a handy lap counter takes away the stress. This was an essential tool especially when my kids were arguing about who was the champion. Facts do not lie and losers do not get to stay on. Subsequently, fights were kept to a minimum and winners kept going until someone finally defeated them.

Build quality.

If you want a Scalextric set that will last the test of time, invest in the C1450M Williams Racing Race Set. Every element of this product is exceptional. The 2 cars have unique racing liveries. Whether you select the standard Williams colours or the Gulf livery, you will love the chunky and highly detailed model. Each sizeable piece is strong and will not flex like cheaper alternatives. This is ideal if the planned surface isn’t perfectly flat. The track can lay on practically any table or flooring without concern.

Connecting every track piece can be a worrying time. The loud clicks can be disconcerting and disassembling each track can be equally worrisome. Thankfully, the hardwearing nature of the material reduces the risk of damage and I had no concerns whenever I changed the layout or stored the pieces back in the box.

Finally, each race can be a marathon session. As such, you want the controllers to feel great. Luckily, the ergonomic design reduces stress and fatigue. Moreover, they are the epitome of comfort. You don’t get that sharp and nasty feeling that cheap alternatives deliver. Instead, every aspect feels high-end and great in your hand.

Is the C1450M Williams Racing Race Set worth it?

Whether you are excited about the new F1 season or not, a Scalextric is a timeless item. No matter the theme, you will adore the fast-paced and dramatic outcome of every race. The smell of dust burning and the noise of the cars whizzing around each track is exceptional. Moreover, the build quality is out of this world and the eye for detail will impress fans of the Willaims team. Accordingly, the C1450M Williams Racing Race Set is unbelievably good and I recommend buying it here!

Review: Suikoden I & II Remaster

The Suikoden I & II Remaster mega bundle is a dream combination! This franchise has long been my favourite, and I’m lucky enough to own the original disc-based games. However, remastering is the modern fad and I couldn’t help but be drawn into this trap. I have covered many remastered titles and I always feel a little dirty. This experience was different. I felt like a child reliving that first playthrough, which is a great feeling. Accordingly, if you have played this series or are new to it, you will enjoy the magic and sparkle of both unique titles.

KONAMI developed and published this JRPG adventure. Moreover, as expected, it is a single-player game with a dated aesthetic. The second game in the series is much cleaner and representative of a shift to modern standards. The first, however, is a beautiful walk down memory lane with its pixelated imagery, sharp colours, and refined mechanics. In short, both are great, but Suikoden I lives and breathes old-school in every sense.

Suikoden I & II Remaster tells a tale of rebellion.

Everyone loves a story of an underdog and their rebellious ways. Suikoden I & II Remaster is dripping in this upstarting and small victory mindset. Along the way, you will recruit people from every walk of life. These nobodies and occasional heroes show that an honourable approach and a high moral standing are the way forward.

Both games have similar themes running through the core storyline. Yet, some differences will resonate with you for one reason or another. I always preferred Suikoden I as I adore the downtrodden people and the sudden uprising. This isn’t to say Suikoden II is poor by comparison, because it isn’t. Both games focus on core geopolitical scenarios and the fight for land and rights. Moreover, there is a wonderful army of protagonists and classic antagonists to overcome.

Time to recruit.

The ability to explore a vast world and recruit an army of nobodies and heroes was revolutionary. However, this idea may seem dated by modern standards. I can’t help but smile at the thought of hiring a farmer, chef, cartographer, wizard, and so forth. Each of these recruits will not form part of my 6 strong party, but they are helpful to my resistance, nonetheless. They help to build my headquarters and bring unique elements to my growing force. After all, who doesn’t fear a band of 100+ underdogs and their pissed-off ways?

Playing the first game first isn’t essential, but it is advised. There is a bonus if you recruit every would-be warrior and this makes a huge difference in Suikoden II. What’s more, many of these fighters return in the sequel, so it is easier to follow the action if you play the titles as intended.

What’s different?

A remaster wouldn’t be a remaster unless there were some minor differences. Thankfully, Suikoden I & II Remaster retains much of its original charm. This will appease the hardcore fan base and shouldn’t annoy new players.

The script has been overhauled slightly to remove some of the issues and clean things up. As a youngster, I skimmed over these problems, but they’ve irked me for much of my adult life. Consequently, though there are some minor problems, the script and dialogue now flow nicely.

Other major changes focus on visual improvements rather than key gameplay alterations. The character portraits look sharper and the UI is cleaner and easier to work around. Moreover, there is an autosave feature which is useful for forgetful gamers. On top of this, you can now fast-forward battles if you have the patience of a toddler.

Suikoden I & II Remaster looks amazing.

Suikoden I & II Remaster looks amazing! I could just be horribly biased, but I was impressed with the modern touches. The sharper colours and crisper lines make this pleasant to the eye. However, this modern polish doesn’t undermine the old-school roots. The pixelation and vibrant colour palette are undeniably dated. Furthermore, the simplicity of the UI and the character models tweak your nostalgia-fueled heartstrings.

The overworld is a thing of beauty, but I adore the different combat approaches from each game. Turn-based gameplay expands to a massive grid-style army battle with runes and commands. This evolving approach gives lovers of every type of RPG something to look forward to. I preferred the simplicity of the first game, but I enjoyed the challenge and design of the second instalment.

The audio doesn’t disappoint. The soundtrack is as glorious as it always was. The blend of drama, anger, grit, and determination drives the story and each battle forward. Yet, it is the inclusion of new ambient sound effects that makes this pop. The world feels alive and it was a joy to fight, explore, and relive this hectic and oppressive world.

Spectacular controls.

As a child, I was relatively adept at playing computer games. Subsequently, I never struggled to pick this up and play. Thankfully, that has continued through my adult life and this remaster was equally easy to master. The control system is a joy to experience and the inputs and control layout are brilliant. New to the series gamers will enjoy learning the fundamentals and exploring the different combat elements.

Suikoden I & II Remaster combines hours of enjoyable gameplay. If you are a completionist, there is so much depth and plenty of characters to recruit. Though the first instalment is relatively short, the sequel is larger, more challenging, and bound to keep you coming back for more.

Suikoden I & II Remaster is a raving success.

It would have taken a lot for me to dislike this remastered game. Thankfully, KONAMI did everything right and only improved areas that could move the series forward. This wise choice will appeal to gamers of all descriptions. Moreover, though there are some dated elements, they are wonderfully complemented by the modern polish and the incredible storytelling. Accordingly, this is a raving success and I recommend buying it here! Old-school gaming doesn’t get better than this. Pick your party, explore a vast world, and prove that underdogs can win!

For The Kitchen

The first thing that we’re going to be looking at is tech for the kitchen. There are now some amazing pieces of tech for the heart of the home, but one of the best is definitely the smart fridge. This has made life so much easier for so many people all because you can hook it up to your phone and see what is inside your fridge no matter where you are. Thinking of something for dinner tonight? Gone are the days of standing in the store, not knowing what you need and what you don’t. Gone are the days of making lists, leaving them on the kitchen countertop, and then having to stress the whole way around the store. On top of this, you can also set it so that you get alerts when you’re running low on a specific item or if you are reaching the use by date.

In The Garden

When you decide to get out in the garden and make it look decent again, it’s not going to be easy. You’re probably going to need pieces of tech such as a strimmer, a lawnmower, a weed wacker and so much more. It will take you some time to get through all of the mess to create the beautiful garden that you are thinking of, but that’s okay, with the help of this tech it will go faster than if you had to do it all by hand.

Also, if you want to add a patio or some decking, but you don’t want to hire someone to do this for you, you can do it yourself. For instance, if you often forget things or you need to set timers then you might benefit from a smart speaker. They can also play your music through them and can be used to call other smart speakers in your home. If you want to know what people in the household want for dinner then you could ring upstairs and someone will answer. It doesn’t just stop at your household. Certain personal assistants and speakers can be used to video call and voice chat with friends and family across the land. Check out the various ones on the market to see which ones will be best for you.

Location Sharing

Finally, there is tech out there now that knows exactly where you are at any given time. When you are out and about, your friends and family might want to know your location. This is perfectly normal and it can be used to ensure you are safe at all times. Location sharing became a thing when snapchat was released, thanks to their map sharing function. Friends now knew each other’s whereabouts and could find them if they ever went silent or they knew they were in trouble.

If you are traveling or you go abroad then share your location as you never know when it could save your life. Location sharing makes your life a whole lot easier as you won’t always need to reply to messages asking where you are. Location sharing is available through most platforms now, whatsapp, snapchat, and imessage.

Review: PNY Pro Elite V3 Type-C

In December 2024 I reviewed the PNY Pro Elite V3 USB flash drive. This robust and compact beast impressed me with its professional build quality and high speed. However, the traditional USB-A connection was frustrating as it restricted its uses. Thankfully, PNY has listened to the feedback and released the PNY Pro Elite V3 Type-C. This phenomenal storage device has rapid read and write speeds and up to 2TB capacity. Accordingly, it is the ideal device for content creators and anyone who needs to handle massive files.

This impressive device delivers up to 1000 MB/s read speeds and up to 800 MB/s write speed. This makes it a ridiculously fast device when you consider its compact nature and price point. What’s more, the modern USB-C connection is compatible with many mobile phones and PCs or laptops. This versatility makes it a great option if you have the latest setup. Alternatively, the aforementioned USB-A version may be more suitable if your PC is missing a USB-C port.

Technical aspects.

The PNY Pro Elite V3 Type-C is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Flash drive as such, it is future-proofed and up to 256 times faster than a USB 2.0 device. Now, this may not seem important, but when time is money, you want your files to be transferred quickly and safely. Fortunately, this device does that and I wasn’t disappointed. Furthermore, I never struggled with overheating and there were no compatibility issues. This ensures that inexperienced users will not struggle no matter the data they handle.

I tested the product using CrystalDiskMark. There are plenty of other suitable programs, but this is my go-to option. I used this to test my SK Hynix drives and this will be my benchmark. The advertised speeds look great on paper, but how did this drive fair when I transferred large 4K movie files from my PC onto the device? Well, in short, it was remarkable!

Benchmark scores.

The USB-A version delivered 945 MB/s read speeds and 735 MB/s write speeds on average. As such, this was what I was hoping to beat. Unsurprisingly, though, the PNY Pro Elite V3 Type-C delivered almost identical results across 5 different attempts. 946 MB/s read speeds and 732 MB/s write speeds on average were the outcome. This was phenomenal as you are guaranteed exceptional performance no matter which USB connection you choose.

Build quality.

I’ve reviewed and purchased many PNY products in my time and they never disappoint. The latest design and metal casing are perfect for professionals who wish to create a great first impression. Additionally, no one wants their data to be damaged because the drive they use is woeful. Thankfully, this one is so well built that you can throw it in your bag, pocket, or draw and it will take the rough and tumble.

The push mechanism is strong and I had no issues with this design. The USB-C male connection was well protected in the metal casing. Moreover, there is a handy opening to connect a clip to keep the device close to hand.

Is the PNY Pro Elite V3 Type-C worth it?

If you want a rapid device that is well-built, easy to use and has a modern connection, then this is the device for you. I love the premium finish and the hard-wearing case. Furthermore, the read and write speeds are on par or better than many of its similar-priced peers. Consequently, you are getting a fantastic device with all the pros and no cons and I recommend buying it here!

The PNY Pro Elite V3 Type-C has been awarded the Movies Games and Tech Gold Award.

Review: The Executive – Movie Industry Tycoon

Developed by Aniki Games and produced by Goblinz Publishing and Maple Whispering Limited, The Executive—Movie Industry Tycoon is a movie production simulation Tycoon that focuses on the financial and critique sides of the industry.

There are many Tycoon games in the market, and it becomes hard to get your game some attention. It’s a hard industry, and only the original and the really good can stand out. With that said, why on earth would you release such a generic concept for a game in this oversaturated market?

Well, somehow, it came under my radar, so let’s talk about it- let’s talk about The Executive.

Another day Another Tycoon

The Executive – Movie Industry Tycoon, what I will be referring to as The Executive from now on, is a complete package game. It’s a Tycoon, it’s a simulator. In short, it is what you can imagine.

You start the game and choose difficulty. There is not much difference between the four choices. Starting from inheriting money from parents to picking up a loan from the bank, it merely decides your starting capital and debt(if any).

From there on, select your company name with logo and Character name and face.

Once the game begins, you have a list of things you can do. Look at analytics, hire talent or just simply make a movie. The budget of the movie, the number of cast members, and the genre/theme of the film are selected from available options. As The Executive moves forward, you are expected to embark on research that will allow you to add more styles, themes, and concepts to make movies.

Your progress or lack thereof can be seen by the condition of the office on screen. The ultimate goal is to make a profit.

So, a functioning little Tycoon. Sadly, I feel I have seen or played the same game as The Executive many times before. Let’s explore that feeling.

Lack of Executive Reason

Having played the game, I can’t help but say that The Executive doesn’t bring anything new to the table. It follows the same formula as countless other tycoon games, offering a standard experience without innovation.

The gameplay, from selecting your starting conditions to producing movies, feels overly familiar and lacks any unique features that would make it stand out in the crowded genre.

It’s a case of ticking off all the expected boxes without offering any fresh twists or deeper mechanics to keep players engaged.

The Executive just does not have any big wow moments. Don’t get me wrong, it is a perfectly functioning game. Infact, in a situation where I have nothing else to play, I would happily give it more time. A scenario quite unlikely to happen..

Even this review feels like it is going in a loop. Just not much to discuss, as the game offers nothing new. Let’s just wrap it up.

Just Another Amongst Others

The Executive – Movie Industry Tycoon does exactly what you expect but not much more. It’s a solid game that functions well, but it doesn’t bring anything new or exciting to the table.

In a genre saturated with similar titles, it struggles to distinguish itself and quickly fades into the sea of other tycoon games.

While it could entertain for a short while, it lacks the depth or innovation needed to keep players invested in the long term. If you’re looking for something fresh or groundbreaking, The Executive likely won’t scratch that itch.

It’s a perfectly fine experience, but one that’s all too familiar, and in this oversaturated market, that’s simply not enough to make it stand out.

Review: Parkitect

Parkitect filled me with nostalgic vibes. I’m of an age where Theme Park, Theme Hospital, and the original Sims games thrived. These titles were silly, complex, and just a joy to play. Accordingly, for me to consider Parkitect in the same vein is high praise indeed.

This park-building simulation game was developed by Texel Raptor and published by Blitworks. Furthermore, it is a single-player title that uses a bird’s eye perspective. This was key as each park can become hectic and you want to keep on top of things. Like its peers, you are expected to juggle multiple elements at once. Satisfaction, new rides, and ratings are the aim of the game. Alternatively, you can do the bare minimum and grab as much cash as possible.

Parkitect is fun from the off.

I rarely jump into a game with both feet. I like the idea of taking my time and I feel my way into the action. However, Parkitect was different. Though the action and setting are unique, it had an undeniably familiar edge. This was great as I could get up to speed in no time at all. Moreover, I was having fun from the opening gambit.

The exceptional tutorial helps set the scene, but the ability to play through an array of scenarios or the sandbox mode was great. I admit that I spent most of my time playing through the 30-odd scenarios. In short, they were fantastic, fun, and pretty challenging. Unlike the freedom of the sandbox, you are asked to complete tasks to get through each level. This rigidity was entertaining and I liked the goals.

Just as fun as its dated peers.

To say that Parkitect is as good as its dated peers is some statement. Yet, I can easily make that comment! The simplicity of the gameplay and the fast-flowing action was impressive. Combining these elements with the incredible UI and challenging gameplay was a master stroke.

Watching your park grow and evolve across the massive arenas was fascinating. Additionally, managing finances and customer satisfaction was tough. Furthermore, planning a seamless park where guests and staff coexist but remain apart wasn’t as easy as you’d hoped. This balancing act was the perfect storm and something that keeps you returning for more.

Parkitect looks great.

There are plenty of special and ultra-realistic games. However, I have a soft spot for dated and pixelated affairs. The harsh colours and rough textures remind me of my youth. Moreover, the sense of rigidity in the largest of spaces makes you focus on the details.

The audio was as loud and as fun as you’d expect. Whoops of joy and the odd scream of terror are matched by some unfortunate sounds. These noises demand centre stage and they overpower everything else. This isn’t a complaint as I loved the sense of fun and the occasional moment of danger.

Great controls.

Parkitect would have been better with a mouse and keyboard. However, I think the controller setup is good and I could navigate every obstacle with ease. This doesn’t make it perfect, but I think the developer did a fine job of making this genre work on a console.

I wasn’t able to complete every scenario for this review. This may be disappointing, but it gives me a reason to keep playing. On top of that, the sandbox mode is gloriously addictive. With so many rides to install and plenty of details to focus on, this will keep you busy for hours.

Parkitect is a great example of the genre.

Recently, the Two Point franchise has taken control. Yet, I think that Parkitect cuts a nice slice of the pie for itself. The action is retro without lacking originality. Additionally, it is great fun and super addictive. Accordingly, it is a great game and I recommend buying it here! Can you run the park of your dreams? Pick your ground, install some rides, and start spinning those plates.

Review: Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land

0

The Atelier series has long been celebrated for its charming narratives, deep alchemy mechanics, and colorful worlds, and Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land looks to continue this tradition while introducing a vast open-world and a fresh protagonist. Developed by Gust and published by Koei Tecmo, this entry shifts away from the cosy settings of past games, instead placing players in a ruined continent where alchemy is outlawed, setting the stage for a more mystery-driven adventure.

A Story and Characters Worth Exploring

One of the strongest aspects of Atelier Yumia is its story and characters. The narrative is genuinely engaging, offering an intriguing world full of mystery and discovery. Yumia and her companions are well-developed, and their interactions help drive the adventure forward. The themes of alchemy being outlawed and uncovering lost knowledge give the story a unique edge that stands out from previous entries.

Great Mechanics, But Too Many of Them

The game introduces several compelling mechanics, including alchemy synthesis, party tactics, skill trees, and base building. The alchemy system remains the heart of the experience, allowing players to experiment with crafting powerful weapons and items based on the materials they gather. The party system and combat skills add layers of strategy, and the base-building mechanic provides a fun distraction—at least at first. However, with so many gameplay systems in play, some features end up feeling underdeveloped or unnecessary.

Base building is a feature I typically enjoy in games, and I spend hours trying to create a comfortable and immersive home base. However, in Atelier Yumia, it feels out of place. The game sets up an adventurous tone with ruined structures and a makeshift camp, yet allows players to build mansions with street lamps and fountains. There are no options for realistic survival elements like tents or makeshift shelters, making the mechanic feel more like a cosmetic add-on rather than a natural extension of the game’s world-building.

A Beautiful Yet Disjointed World

The visuals are a mixed bag. On one hand, character models, UI design, crafting animations, and menus are absolutely fantastic. They are crisp, detailed, and polished to perfection. On the other hand, the open world feels hastily put together, as though it was assembled from pre-made assets. The environments lack the handcrafted charm of RPG’s, with copy-pasted terrain and randomly spawned gathering materials that sometimes make sense and sometimes don’t. The large map size doesn’t compensate for a lack of thoughtful design, and a more compact, carefully crafted world would have made this addition to the series near perfect.

Pointless Mechanics & Inconsistent Exploration

Some mechanics feel like they exist just for the sake of adding content. For example, lockpicking serves no real purpose—it’s simply a minigame where you spin circles until they fit, without any challenge or risk. Similarly, exploration mechanics feel redundant. While players can repair ladders and ziplines, they can also triple-jump and scale terrain, rendering many of these environmental additions and most puzzles pointless. In some cases, I bypassed entire puzzles simply by climbing the geometry in unintended ways. This inconsistency detracts from the intended level design and makes the world feel even more like a randomly generated MMO map than a carefully structured RPG setting.

What else gave me old MMO vibes is the lack of variety in enemies. Not only being somewhat un-inspired but also I spent so many hours looking at the same designs and if I got lucky a palette swap of something I fought a few hours back. That’s not describing ALL the enemies in the game, but there are certainly long stretches where they get quit stale.

Combat and Progression Issues

Combat is serviceable but suffers from balance issues. The game’s difficulty is too forgiving, partially because of how easy it is to overpower yourself early on. By simply exploring areas ahead of the intended level curve at no risk, I was able to gather powerful materials and craft incredibly strong weapons, making the first boss a breeze. Some form of progression lock or better scaling might have helped maintain a steadier challenge throughout the game.

Final Verdict: A Game With Potential, But Lacking Polish

Despite its shortcomings, Atelier Yumia still offers a fun and engaging experience, especially for fans of the series and alchemy mechanics. The story, UI, and animations are definite highlights, and the synthesis system remains a strong point. I will recommend this to anyone that wants to chill, gather, craft and switch off for a while. However, the poor world design, redundant mechanics, and unbalanced progression prevent it from reaching the heights of its predecessors. I would love to score it higher, but as it stands, it lands at a 6/10.

Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land is available March 21st on all consoles.
