Review: Worms W.M.D.

The Worms game series from Team 17 has been firmly embedded into my gaming heart and soul ever since my Commodore Amiga days, and I have been happily playing the series on each gaming platform I have chosen in every console generation since then. In fact I still have the original Worms installed on my Amiga 1200 hard drive I have in storage. It is such an iconic and well known gaming series that you can ask any gamer if they known or played Worms and they will all say yes. So when I learned that the current generations of consoles were finally going to get a new Worms game I was more than just a little excited, aptly named ‘Worms W.M.D.’, it was time to see what the next evolution of this series had in store for me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VaEEz9RiJcE

When it comes to the Worms series, there are a particular set of elements that have to come together for it to really succeed for fans of the series and to attract new fans. Those elements run from the amazing and various battlegrounds in the levels you fight on, the legendary weapons you use to destroy the other teams and the brilliant customisation features that allow you to create your own teams and put your own personal twist on them. I am happy to say that this latest entry has all the above and more.

Worms W.M.D. brings together everything that has made the series so fun to play over the years, it takes no time at all to feel right at home in the game if you are familiar with the games but just in case you are new to it, Worms W.M.D. has an excellent tutorial campaign that eases players into how it all works from selecting and firing particular weapons to how to move your team of Worms around the level. The tutorial missions also introduce the new features such as vehicle combat in tanks, helicopter gunships and the new Mech suits. Each tutorial has a medal system to mark how fast you can complete the mission, with the ultimate goal of setting a new ‘World Record’ time, which is very challenging indeed to try and beat.

Worms WMD 3

For those who enjoy playing solo, Worms W.M.D. offers a great Single player campaign that takes you through ever increasing challenging levels against AI controlled teams that vary in size and skill throughout. Each mission will have a set of side objectives to complete such as keeping your team alive or dispatching the enemy in a particular way and with a certain weapon. The basic aim is to simply defeat all enemy team to win but having these side objectives adds a nice little replay value to each mission for the perfectionists. The levels are well designed adding the new vehicles to mix up the action gradually and the levels themselves also hold secrets as well. On first look each map looks like the traditional 2D environments fans know well, but now you can move inside building to either collect crates for materials and new weapon discoveries or to take cover. This adds a new level of strategy in planning your attacks and in defensive manoeuvring to each turn. The single player campaign is a great way to practice using the weapons and getting used to the varying environments you will battle on before you take it to the next level should you choose to.

That next level is the Multiplayer side, one of my personal favourite modes in recent Worms games. Worms W.M.D. brings an array of options for the multiplayer side. For the competitive players it has a ranked online mode and for the less competitive but still want to challenge others online it also has an unranked option. Local play allows you to play offline against friends in a sofa versus mode or you can set up to play AI teams. Having the ability to set up private matches as well is great to invite friends to play online. All these modes give a very deep multiplayer side to this game which has always been one of the most fun aspects to Worms, the ability to challenge and share the experience with others and especially friends.

Worms WMD 1

Customisation is also rich in this instalment, with the usual personalisation of creating custom team names and team members. Now you can customise the outfits your worms will wear, the style of dialogue they speak, the fanfare and celebration dance when you win and the gravestones your team will use should they fall. You can also create ‘schemes’ where players can set the AI difficulty, health amount, player turn and match times which will be great when creating private games with friends. For me this is the Worms game with the most customisation options and it encourages players to take more control of the Worms experience and that is always a good thing and creating teams is always great fun.

Creating new things also brings me to perhaps the greatest feature in Worms W.M.D., that of crafting. Crates no longer only contain weapons to be used but some can also contain materials that can be used to craft new weapons to use. Currently held weapons can also be dismantled to turn them into materials to be used for crafting new weapons as well, all helping to give an edge to planning your next attacks. To craft a weapon you simply bring up the same menu you would use to select the attack you are going to use and use the right bumper to switch to the crafting menu where the weapons you are able to craft can be selected. It takes one full turn to craft the weapon but the nice little twist is that you can even craft weapons during an opponents turn. This strategy enables you to be rather sneaky in your planning, by crafting on an opponents turn, the weapon will be available on your next turn and it prevents them from knowing you are taking time to do the crafting. Crafting also gives you time to see the positions of the enemy teams as well as learning the layout of the environment to pick a weapon that will help bring you victory as long as you can find the materials needed, which is why exploring buildings is a key element in a match.

Worms WMD 2

Worms W.M.D. brought back all the reasons I loved the original Worms games and a reminder of just why they time and again succeed in evolving the series each time.By returning to the classic gameplay fans have loved, Worms W.M.D. is great fun to play and still holds a challenge for players of all levels. The crafting element along with the new vehicles all create engaging battles and the now famous Worms sense of humour binds it all together so fluidly that the customisation has never been more rewarding. Nice touches such as the nods to other Team 17 games also helps in making Worms W.M.D. a must have for any fans of the series and a very tasty party game for friends to enjoy.

It is time to grab your holy hand grenades, add a coat of wax to your mech suit and let your Super Sheep fly once again and it now even better than ever and it is a deserving game to celebrate the Worms 21st Anniversary.

Review: Maldita Castilla EX – Cursed Castilla

You would be hard pushed to talk to any gamer of a certain age to find one that has no experience playing the iconic side scrolling action game Ghosts n Goblins. The class story of a Knight fighting evil and monsters to save the day is one that has held up over many gaming generations and in the current climate of retro styled games flooding current consoles, it still holds up today. Now a PC game from 2012 has added its own take on this gaming genre and instantly has all the aspects that made Ghosts n Goblins so popular. Madilta Castilla Ex – Cursed Castile pays both respect to the past age of gaming and brings it up to date for a modern player but can it live up to the legacy that inspired it?

Poor old King Alfonso the VI of Leon in the Castilla Kingdom, it is never easy for a monarch. His reign made worse when demons capture the tears of a young witch and use them to create a gateway to their world, allowing more to enter and threaten Castilla. The King summons his greatest knights led by Don Ramiro and sets them on a quest to end the evil.

Straightaway you can see just how much the influence of the 16 Bit era has influenced this game. The visuals are gloriously retro and instantly make you feel as though you have stepped back in time and playing on an old generation Megadrive instead of the modern Xbox One console, the main menu and music are a full on nostalgia trip on their own. If you are someone who played on 16 Bit consoles then this will no doubt resonate with you adding that all important retro buzz such games look to create and this is before you have even entered the game itself.

Maldita_Castilla_EX 2

Once you do the trip down memory lane continues and you can see how much Ghosts n Goblins has inspired this game and it is important to say that it does feel like it has been inspired rather than simply trying to imitate it. You can see how much respect Abylight Studios the developers have for the original genre in every little detail from the animation to the level designs and character models. It successfully blends together to conjure memories of playing the very games that inspired this one and leaves you as the player with a great big smile whilst playing.

The gameplay is also a throwback to days gone by in gaming, offering a real challenge in difficulty but never feels cheap or forced to frustrate the player. It starts off with the familiar side scrolling levels but soon adds in a vertical element to the platforming changing the level layout to mix things up. You take control of Don Ramiro throughout the game, despite at times being shown amongst his three travelling companions, you only play as him. He has the ability to throw weapons, starting with short swords but these can be changed via power ups obtained from treasure chests to daggers, axes and bombs. Deciding which type of weapon to use will be important when tackling the different stages and enemies you encounter from slow-moving zombies, other knights to airborne enemies like harpies and evil bomb dropping birds.

Fighting your way through the stages will take you to the various boss fights, each with a different attacking style but all with a large health bar you will need to whittle down to defeat it. Boss fights are fun and there is a real sense of achievement for beating them as doing so will take you to the next chapter and level. The difficulty is strict but not impossible and the classic health bar consisting of only three hearts for Don Ramiro can quickly disappear so it is rewarding when you reach a checkpoint allowing you to continue from that point should you die instead of having to replay the entire level again. Having such a low health bar with every enemy hit taking a heart adds a degree of tension to each fight and level but thankfully the old school style of picking up food to regain health is a welcome relief to the action. That action is excellently enhanced by the musical score which flooded my mind with more nostalgia of playing Golden Axe, and was a very lovely touch to the experience.

Maldita_Castilla_EX 3

There is a danger whenever developers try to venture into retro gaming and can end up creating something that simply feels like it has copied something gamers used to love but only end up missing what made it so favoured. Madilta Castilla Ex – Cursed Castile managers to respect its muse Ghosts n Goblins as a game and genre and maintain a refreshing take on so many elements to make it a great game for players of that generation and more modern gamers. It is a fantastic trip down memory lane and the depth in its simplicity of gameplay and challenge makes this a must play for fans of retro style games.

Great arcade action with brilliant old generation gaming elements makes this game a wonderful cocktail to savour and is definitely worth giving a go to step away from the blockbuster big budget AAA tiles of today’s releases.

Review: Linksys MAX-STREAM AC600 USB Adapter

A Closer Look

It is rather small!

MGT Review Linksys AC600 - 4

Final Thoughts

The first thing you notice when you take it out of the box is just how small this USB adaptor actually is, just take a look at the picture above of it in my hand. The size is perfect because you can leave it plugged into your laptop or desktop PC and it doesn’t get in the way, or knocked when you use your machine.

The setup was simple – you just plug it in and let Windows take care of the rest. There is a driver CD if you need it, but Windows 10 took care of everything for me. All I needed to do was to disable my existing Wi-Fi adaptor (it was built-in to the laptop) and then connect the AC600 to my wireless network.

One thing to note is that the AC600 only works with Windows – so if you have a Mac then it’s not going to work.

The AC600 is dual-band, and so works with either a 2.4 GHz network or a 5 GHz network.

I immediately noticed a significant speed increase over the “old” Wi-Fi adaptor on the laptop – if you have a newer laptop they you might not notice as much of an increase, but certainly the older your existing kit, the more of an increase you are likely to see.

To get the most out of the AC600 you will want to connect it to a Max-Stream router, such as the Linksys AC5400, which in the case of this review we did (and look out for the AC5400 review soon).

If you want to get the fastest possible speeds from your Wi-Fi network, then look no further than the Linksys AC600, its a must have piece of kit if you don’t have an up to date Wi-Fi adaptor.

The Linksys AC600 is available now priced £24.99.

Review: Linksys MAX-STREAM AC1900+ Wi-Fi Range Extender RE7000

If your wi-fi signal doesn’t reach everywhere around your house, you really need an extender, and Linksys have just released a brand new one called the MAX-STREAM AC1900+ Wi-Fi Range Extender RE7000, and here is our review.

Review MGT Linksys AC600 Wi-Fi USB - 6

The first range extender; with MU-MIMO and Seamless Roaming, the Linksys RE7000 works with any Wi-Fi router, however when paired with a Linksys Max-Stream router it can provide even greater performance to Wi-Fi devices all around the home with Room-to-Room Wi-Fi.  The combination of a Max-Stream router and range extender creates a single network in the home with a single network name (SSID) so users can roam throughout their home without having to manually connect to the range extender.  The Linksys Max-Stream Range Extender also features Spot Finder Technology (Patent Pending) to show users where to place the range extender using a mobile device for optimal performance. Crossband Technology maximises the simultaneous use of both bands, while Beamforming focuses and strengthens the Wi-Fi signal.  Additional features include:

Final Thoughts

The RE7000 is fairly small and just plugs into a spare power socket. Unlike other extenders it doesn’t have a pass-though socket for another device to plug into so that you don’t lose a power socket.

Setting up the RE7000 was very simple – just plug it in, switch it on, wait for the light on the front to start blinking orange and then use Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) if your router supports it. You have to do this twice, once to extend your 2.4 GHz network and once to extender your 5 GHz network. The whole process only takes a few minutes to complete.

It’s easy to tell if the set up was successful – the light on the front goes green. If you don’t see green just try it again.

You can also setup the RE7000 via a web browser, which is also fairly simple, but if your router supports WPS just use that is its so much easier and quicker.

You should then move the RE7000 to the midway point between your router and where you are having Wi-Fi issues. You can also see the connection quality from the light on the front. Solid green is ready to use, solid orange means its a weak signal (but will still work) and blinking orange means it cannot connect back to your router and you should find somewhere else to plug it in. I found this really simple method very useful and it saved me a lot of trial and error to find the best location.

You can also use the web setup to view the SpotFinder view which will show you the signal strength.

Review MGT Linksys AC600 Wi-Fi USB - 7

And that was it – the RE7000 was up and running in the correct location and I had a wi-fi signal. And not just any wi-fi signal, I had a strong and fast wi-fi signal, something I didn’t have there before! Because I had used the same SSID as the rest of my wi-fi network my devices just automatically connected and carried on working, no mucking around having to select a different network name, simple! This is all part of seamless roaming when Max-Stream Routers are paired with Max-Stream Range (in my case I was using the new Linksys AC5400 router, but more on that in a separate review).

I also liked that there was a Gigabit Ethernet port on the RE7000 so I could connect it to another device, such as my Xbox in order to get a faster connection.

If you are having wi-fi issues and you want a very simple and easy to set-up extender, with very fast speeds, then look no further than the AC1900 RE7000 extender, you won’t be disappointed.

The AC1900 RE700 extender retails for around £109.99, but as usual look for the best deal.
