Win The Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season on DVD

To celebrate the release of The Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season on DVD and Blu-ray, we are offering you the chance to win a copy on DVD.

THE WALKING DEAD: THE COMPLETE SEVENTH SEASON sees the return of cast favourites; Andrew Lincoln as Alexandria’s reluctant hero, Rick Grimes; Jeffrey Dean Morgan as the leader of the brutal Saviours, Negan; Chandler Riggs as Rick’s son, Carl Grimes; Noman Reedus , as crossbow-wielding Daryl Dixon; Melissa McBride as Carol Peletier who secludes herself from Alexandria after she is forced to question her ruthless methods; Lauren Cohan as survivor Maggie Greene; Danai Gurira as katana-wielding warrior, Michonne; Sonequa Martin-Green as former firefighter, Sasha Williams; and Tom Payne as Paul “Jesus” Rovia, recruiter and a supply runner for the Hilltop Colony.  This season also introduces a fan favourite comic book character; The Kingdom Ruler Ezekiel, played by Khary Payton with his pet Bengal tiger, Shiva.

THE WALKING DEAD’s record breaking season 7 premiere dramatically kicked off as Negan brutally forced Rick and Alexandria to fall under his will after killing two fan favourites in the highest rated THE WALKING DEAD episode to date. After the Saviours impose cruel and corrupt rule upon Alexandria, Rick realises that Negan cannot be reasoned with. He and his group have to prepare to go to war with the Saviours and take Negan down once and for all. Victory will require more than just the supplies and numbers in Alexandria and while in pursuit of more weapons, food and new fighters, Rick and the group will be tested in ways we’ve never seen before. They’ll explore a world that is much bigger than anything they’ve encountered and discover new factions (The Kingdom, Oceanside and The Scavengers) that will aide and test Alexandria’s fight against the Saviours. The group will rise up and band together with new allies, but are they prepared for an all-out battle with Negan and his army?

Watch the featurette about Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander

Watch the new featurette with Alicia Vikander discussing stepping into the iconic role of Lara Croft for the film.

Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen.  Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class.  Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone.

Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death.Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan.  But her mission will not be an easy one; just reaching the island will be extremely treacherous.  Suddenly, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Lara, who—against the odds and armed with only her sharp mind, blind faith and inherently stubborn spirit—must learn to push herself beyond her limits as she journeys into the unknown.  If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider.

Review: MARVEL Vs Capcom Infinite

Two things I have a passion for are MARVEL and Capcom, both have been a part of my life growing up from boy to man via comic books, animation, films and video games. The MARVEL Vs Capcom fighting game series has always brought all those passions together wonderfully and after recently enjoying Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 as a remastered game, there was really no better way to build hype for the latest in the series MARVEL Vs Capcom Infinite. Sadly however, there are infinitely more problems with this new instalment that just spoiled it all for me.

I am just going to start off by saying that I really did have high hopes for this game but trailers leading into the release did concern me with how the game looked in terms of art style and from what I had seen in the story mode side to it. I like a good story mode in a fighting game and always find it a good way to get to know the roster and experience the universe of that game to help become more immersed in it. Mortal Kombat X and Injustice 2 managed superb story modes while the very late addition of one to Street Fighter V was a waste of time and Tekken 7’s story mode was fun to watch but terrible to actually play. I did not expected to play another horrible story mode for a while but then MARVEL Vs Capcom Infinite went and trumped both of them with a disappointing and lazy story mode that only highlighted the shortcomings of this game.

Before we get to the story mode let me cut right to the chase. The two biggest issues I have with this game come in the art style and the character roster. Visually this game looks like a hybrid mess of previous MvC (MARVEL Vs Capcom) titles have had previously and a mobile game. It is not quite the CGI level of Injustice 2 or Tekken 7 but it has completely lost the charm of the animated comic book style of previous games and it is off putting, especially in the story mode where Captain America looks like a cos playing Brock Lesnar and Spider-Man has become so body builder that there is really no way he could go back to being Peter Parker without Aunt May asking if he is on steroids. I just really dislike how most of the characters look in this game, a distraction that instantly put me in the “oh what have you done and WHY??” mood.

Next we have the roster itself, which at 30 characters is and should be impressive in any fighting game. But then you notice something rather strange, that there are no XMEN universe characters at all. No Wolverine or Cyclops and no Doctor Doom or Magneto. This all comes down of course to licensing issues but a MvC game without the XMEN line-up just looks and feels wrong and for me as a fan of the series, it suffers as a result even before you jump into the action. Once you have come to terms with that disappointment then you then also notice that out of this 30 character line up, only four of the characters are female. Then out of all the available Capcom and MARVEL universes that they could use, only Chun Li, Captain Marvel, Morrigan and Gamora. The lack of real diversity is bewildering to me after you have to already accept the removal of the XMEN cast of characters is astounding. Four female characters is just nuts when you consider how Black Widow is planned for DLC but would have been perfect for this roster in the story mode considering it has Hawkeye who only pops up in a couple of cut-scenes. It is so infuriating to see that whilst being confined by the licensing issues with the XMEN to then see just how unimaginative the remaining roster is when you think about the iconic female characters both MARVEL and Capcom could easily have used.

Which brings me to the story mode, a campaign mode that is dull and uninspired to the point where getting through it all is a true challenge of patience and perseverance. Ultron from MARVEL Universe and Sigma from Capcom Universe have chosen to work together and use the six Infinity Stones to reshape all of reality so only Robot life exists and using the two stones of Reality and Space, they are able to merge their two universes together leading to the Convergence event. Heroes from both Universes must now work together to track down the four remaining Infinity Stones of Soul, Mind, Time and Power to stop the new big bad in UltraSigma and try to restore both universes. This mode is a blend of cut-scenes to tell the story mixed with fights to progress through. Thanks to the visual style already being horrible for me, the wooden and lacklustre voice acting simply becomes the icing on the cake as characters are thrown together almost randomly at times in order to mix up the fights throughout the campaign. Story wise it is also a mess with the convergence event never really explored with the story kicking off almost three months afterwards with occasional flashback with some characters to fill in a little back story but it became a tedious mode to experience and though it does give a good taste of the new gameplay style, it was really underwhelming to play through.

Now it does sound like I hate this game right now, and at this point I am more frustrated and annoyed by its shortcomings and bad decisions then enjoyment of it as a game. Which is really annoying because once you get into the very core of this game, the gameplay, it really is a fighting game worthy of your attention both as a fan of the series or newcomers and the new fighting system actually works really well once you begin to master its depth. The Arcade mode is a fun way to experiment with different team ups and the Missions mode really is a superb tutorial as it uses a “do this” style of teaching techniques, moves and combos to the player. I appreciate the efforts made to bring in the newcomer or just casual fighting player by using certain Auto modes to help being a player into the action such as the Auto combo which allows repeatedly pressing light punch to trigger a basic combo which is visually impressive on screen.

I like the stripped down 2 Vs 2 tag team style of fighting with the new character switch mechanic really shining through for me. Players can now switch out their characters at any point of the fighting to either conserve their health or to link them into a fighting combo for extra damage. Timing the switch takes some practice and learning the best switch link combos can take time as players experiment with different characters to see which compliment each other the best but when you do start putting powerful link combo strings together, it can be devastating but a real treat on screen with some seriously impressive animations for the powers on display from characters. The work that has gone into some of the characters as well for their move sets is also fun with stand outs being Ghost Rider and Frank West who has some insane combo moves.

The Six infinity stones now play a part with their powers now available in a fight to aid the player. Like the super combo meter which builds during the match, the infinity stone will also have a power meter which after reaching half way can be activated to use its full power such as the Soul Stone being able to revive a downed character or the Time stone which will quickly charge the supermove meter or the Space stone which will trap your opponent character in a force shield cage preventing them from escaping or switching out. Learning which stone suits your play style with the combination of characters you pick alongside learning how to pull off the hard hitting combos whilst studying other characters in order to defend against them makes this truly one of the deepest fighting games of recent years. It can feel button mashy but only to the point where you start to figure out the combos and timing then it becomes far more masterful.

Online action is fluid as well with no server issues at time of writing and I really appreciate fighting games that go out of their way to be inclusive of new comers by offering which MvC Infinite does, in the way of a Beginners League alongside casual and ranked matches so those just getting a feel for the online can go into this beginners league and practice whilst experiencing the online. The learning curve is quite high though once you move to the conventional modes but the training area is a crucial way of taking a team into it to try out moves and combos and see how well they work together with your own play-style. Taking this game online is huge fun and the first time I had the MvC feeling again with Infinite.

So what do I really think of MARVEL Vs Capcom Infinite, well to put it simply, it is a mess of a game. The strength of the gameplay is not enough to really put this alongside the likes of Tekken 7 or Injustice 2 though it is a good reason to want to play this game. The downsides however do hold this back from being a complete experience for me as a fan of the series and a fan of fighting games. I do not like the visual styling, the story mode is a wasted opportunity and the lack of diversity in the roster after it has already suffered a massive loss in terms of not having the XMEN Universe included just give this a half done feel which only makes the full on price of £45 and above for this both physical and digital for me instantly makes this a title for the bargain bucket of sales and like Street Fighter V, the gameplay alone is strong but not strong enough to make this a must have fighting game.

Nest announces Hello video doorbell and more

0

Nest Labs, Inc. has today announced a home security solution that includes the Nest Secure alarm system, Nest Hello video doorbell, Nest Cam IQ outdoor security camera, and corresponding software and services.

  • Nest Secure alarm system – A home security system designed to be tough on intruders and easy on you. The Nest Secure starter pack includes these products:

○        Nest Guard is an all-in-one security base that provides the alarm, keypad and a motion sensor, along with a friendly voice.

○        Nest Detect is a category first: a sensor that detects both motion and open or close movement in one compact, battery-powered product. Put it on a window and it will know when it opens. Stick it on a wall and it senses motion in a room. Place it on a door and it can do both.

○        Nest Tag is a convenient fob that can attach to a keychain, allowing you to easily arm and disarm Nest Secure without a passcode. Nest Tags are easy to share with family members and trusted people who regularly enter the home, like dog walkers.

  • Nest Hello video doorbell – Nest’s first video doorbell combines the trusted security and intelligence of a Nest Cam with the familiar convenience of a doorbell.
  • Nest Cam IQ outdoor security camera – Nest Cam IQ is an intelligent security camera that knows a person from a thing. Nest Cam IQ can identify when someone’s in your home, alert you, and automatically track that person as they move. Nest Cam IQ delivers 1080p HD video, HD quality audio, and 24/7 live streaming.

“Today, Nest is delivering on the next phase of our strategy to create the thoughtful home,” said Marwan Fawaz, chief executive officer of Nest. “We’ve had quite a year so far, expanding into 11 more countries, growing our product portfolio with the successful launches of Nest Cam IQ indoor and the Nest Thermostat E, and today we’re disrupting yet another product industry: home security. By building product experiences our customers love, Nest has experienced more than 60% growth on devices shipped in recent years and continued to expand to millions of homes around the world”.

Nest Secure

Nest Secure is the first alarm system that is actually enjoyable to live with, designed to be convenient for homeowners as they come and go.

“When we looked at the home security market, we saw a similar landscape to when we entered the thermostat market,” said Matt Rogers, Nest’s founder and chief product officer. “Just as people tend not to use programmable thermostats because of their complexity, the current home security offerings are also a huge pain to live with – whether it’s bulky hardware, false alarms or loud and stressful countdowns. That’s why 43 percent of people with alarm systems don’t ever arm them.* We set out to design a product that isn’t just effective during a security incident, but is delightful and easy to use when people are at home with their families, living their lives, which is the vast majority of the time.”

Everyone in the family has a different routine, so Nest provides multiple ways to arm and disarms: by tapping Nest Tag onto Nest Guard, through the Nest app, or by entering a code on the Nest Guard keypad.

Nest Secure makes it easy to monitor from anywhere, sending a notification if something needs attention. You will have the option to add additional monitoring and deterrence by adding Nest Cams to their system, which is all controlled from the same Nest app.

Nest Detect sensors combine both motion and open/close detection so they can be placed on either doors, windows or walls. They also provide the option to temporarily bypass the alarm on the way out, with the press of a button, thanks to a feature called Quiet Open. And if someone forgets to turn on the alarm? Nest sends a Remind Me notification to arm it directly from the app.

Nest Guard is designed to remain on guard – with battery backup and an optional cellular backup service – even if Wi-Fi is down or the power is out. And with an easy, voice-guided setup that doesn’t require tools, screws or wires, it’s simple for either the customer or a Nest Pro to install.

Nest Hello Video Doorbell

Nest is shipping intelligent and powerful cameras. But there is one important area of the home not completely addressed by Nest Cams – the front door. It’s the place people come in and out. Where the action happens. And one of the first places burglars check for occupants.

Nest Hello can detect a person, then send an alert and a snapshot, even if that person doesn’t ring the bell. With Nest Aware, customers can get alerts when strangers or suspicious activity like people talking or dogs barking are detected.

Nest Hello customers can engage with guests and strangers at the door from anywhere and have a natural conversation with HD Talk and Listen. Echo suppression and ambient noise cancellation ensure it’s easy to hear each other, even on noisy streets. A list of pre-recorded responses makes it easy to quickly and effortlessly answer visitors with one tap from the app.

Nest Cam IQ Outdoor

Buying a security camera is driven by the peace of mind that comes from knowing the home and family are protected. But when it comes to keeping an eye on the home, we know people don’t want more information, they want better, actionable information.

Earlier this year, with the launch of Nest Cam IQ indoor, Nest introduced one of the most intelligent and powerful cameras on the market to bring better security to the inside of your home.

Now, Nest is extending that intelligence outside. Featuring a brand new design, Nest Cam IQ outdoor is a camera that does more and requires less time from customers. Instead of just showing what’s happening, it will deliver critical, actionable information via an alert – like spotting someone unfamiliar in the yard – so users know that the alert is important.

Google Assistant on Nest Cam IQ Indoor

Not only is Nest bringing new hardware to its camera portfolio, but will provide customers with the option to add the Google Assistant to Nest Cam IQ indoor. It’s the first security camera to have the Google Assistant built in and will be available via a free software update for all current and new customers this winter.

The Google Assistant adds a new level of intelligence to Nest Cam IQ indoor, including the ability to ask questions, control the home, and manage tasks.

Security Product Integrations

Through the Works with Nest program, Nest has been working with partners to create integrations with its portfolio of new security products.

Nest has been working with Yale, which brings 175 years of expertise in locks, to build a modern take on a secure deadbolt. The new lock, as well as Nest’s own products, leverages both the Thread and Weave technologies to securely communicate with Nest Secure and other Nest products, even if the power is out or there’s no Internet connection. The Nest + Yale lock will be available early next year.

Customers can disarm the Nest Secure alarm system when they unlock the Nest + Yale lock, and they’ll be able to unlock the door when they notice a friend (or delivery person) through the Nest Hello video doorbell.

Nest will also launch a new accessory, called Nest Connect, that will ensure Nest Secure will work in large homes, as well as enable the Nest + Yale lock, and similar products, to connect to the Internet and be controllable via the Nest App.

When it comes to security, making a home seem like it’s occupied can provide powerful deterrence. Works with Nest products including lights, switches and plugs from companies such as Lutron, LIFX, and Philips can connect with Nest security products to make it look like your home when Nest notices you’re away. That can help prevent break-ins from happening.

And with Chamberlain’s MyQ-enabled garage door openers, users can get a notification if they’ve  left their garage door open. Then they can close it from wherever they are with a tap on their phone.

The Works with Nest program, using technologies such as Thread and Weave, enables Nest products to work seamlessly with products from other manufacturers as a complete system.

Review: Knack 2

A sequel was released in the last two weeks which thousands of fans had been waiting years for. Expectations of fierce battling and the chance of becoming true heroes brought these players together all excited on September 6th. It had been a long wait but thankfully it was a worthwhile wait. That game…Knack 2.

Yeah I know Knack 2 right. The original Knack was a launch title when the PlayStation 4 was first released and the reaction to it was mixed to say the very least from players and the gaming press alike. I came rather late to owning a PS4 but Knack was a title that I wanted to play and thanks to a very generous PSN sale I picked it up for an absolute steal. After all the negative things I had both heard and read, I was not sure what to expect but was genuinely surprised to find that I really enjoyed it. Knack was a fun action platformer which looked great, played great and whilst the story and characters were a little generic, I had a really great time both playing and streaming it. So when I heard a sequel was finally coming out I was pleased to see it becoming a series because I felt there was enough here to start a PlayStation game series.

Knack 2 is bigger than the first with a much longer and deeper story with far more action in terms of actual combat than the original which is made clear from the very opening which sees Knack and Lucas standing on a building looking down to see their city under attack from advanced yet mysterious robots with Lucas claiming that is all his fault. Knack jumps into battle hoping to save the city in a prologue that will teach new players the basics of how Knack works but also to reacquaint those who played the original with the world and this unlikely hero in Knack, also in thanks to a very obvious but clever explanation of everything in the opening cut-scene to the game. The twist is that the opening then leads to what the main game is, a flashback journey where the player experiences the journey right up to the point where the opening kicked off.

Knack 2 really is big improvement on the first game both in terms of how it delivers the story but more importantly in the gameplay. Knack is still able to absorb the surrounding relics around him which causes him to grow in size and strength but the platforming sections will still require him to shrink all the way down to navigate small areas. It is still impressive to see how big Knack can get but at the simple pressing or the R1 button to instantly shrink back down to his littlest form, which at his biggest size of 32ft tall to drop down to 2ft is is visually impressive. Combat wise Knack can still punch, kick and body slam enemies to oblivion and at points through the game will learn new powerful moves to aid against the ever increasing powerful enemies that will be thrown in this path.

There is something to be said about the ease of which Knack is to pick up and play with a refreshing common sense approach to the puzzle sections that players will need to navigate in order to keep pushing Knack forward in an area. The only real place a player may get caught in is the combat where it really just becomes a numbers game for Knack as he is often outnumbered by enemies with a mixture or simple minions to more deadly attacking foes that will challenge the player’s reaction times. The almost over simplistic elements at time are balanced out by the length of the campaign itself which for me came in at just over twelve hours which was a surprise. Even when you complete the game it offers more to do with its New Game + mode which will allow you to carry over any skills and collectibles from your first run into a new game to do it all again but perhaps at a higher difficulty. There is no way to collect every collectible either in just a single playthrough just as it is not possible to unlock everything on the new skill tree where as Knack levels up, the player can unlock new skills which can boost his attacks to be faster and hit harder and improve his health whilst adding new moves to his combos. This need to replay the game multiple times never feels cheap either due to the fact that this is just a fun game to play. Plus once you have completed the main story at least once, it opens up challenge mode in the Extra Content menu option which offers time attack levels and also the Coliseum which tasks the players with defeating waves of enemies in the quickest time possible for as long as Knack can survive. I have to say for the asking price at time of writing of just £29.99, this game offers a lot of content which the original game did not and adds a satisfying replay value to everything.

But it does have some issues and these are relatively minor ones but for me personally, rather annoying ones. During the story, the human side characters will join Knack for the journey but leave all the fighting to Knack and then after you have avoided hazards and battles enemies to move towards the next section, they will either be there waiting for Knack or show up just as you did. This kinda breaks the video game logic for me because if they could so easily and safely get their butts to where I had to go but Knack has to risk his life to fight, shrink, jump and solve puzzles to get to the same place, why not just go with the humans, hell why not just shrink down and just get a piggy back through the whole thing. Like I said, minor but annoying!

Then you have what should have been the best new feature for Knack 2 which just ends up being a more “oh just why didn’t you let us do this online’ frustration, the new co-op mode. Knack 2 can be completely played in two player co-op with a second blue coloured Knack joining the action. In Co-op the new Knacks can even join forces in combat either by attacking the same enemies for the rather clever way in which one Knack can punch the other Knack causing their relics to fly out and hit enemies like a machine gun almost. It is tremendous fun to play in co-op which is why the fact that is restricted to local co-op only is just so disappointing. I really struggle to understand why games in 2017 still refuse to allow online co-op when they have local co-op included. Yes sofa shared play is great fun with friends and Knack 2 benefits from it but it would also greatly benefit if the co-op was also online, something that bugged me here and also in other titles such as the recent LEGO games. It is a great new addition to the gameplay but with online factor it could have been amazing.

The story is well told and fun to experience but again, the rather beige and boring side characters that pop up in cut-scenes as almost filler content holds the story back for me. Then you have the relationship between Knack and Lucas which never really clicked for me in the first game and especially now in the sequel. The voice acting just fails to make the characters connect in any real way and it grates on me how Lucas takes credit for pretty everything Knack does with the “we” all the time, cheeky git. The rest of the game is really solid with the visuals which are striking and good set pieces in the action and platforming which has nice little touches even if the camera position at times fails to help see where Knack needs to go at times.

Perhaps the biggest mistake though with Knack 2 is just how under marketed this game was before release and having the same launch date as Destiny 2 was really just cruel because Knack 2 is so much fun to play and the series now that it is one, deserves to have more of a presence in the PlayStation 4 family and line up of games then it has. With the improvements made in this sequel and the story teasing a third, Knack 2 delivers a fun experience for gamers of all skill types with plenty of replay value and even if restricted for sofa co-op only, a great reason to share it with a friend.

Knack 2 is a sleeper hit title for me of 2017 which has great potential to offer even more if a third game is released. I only hope Sony PlayStation see the sense and finally invest faith in it as a series and allows it to keep growing bigger and better….just like Knack himself.

Review: Sony Xperia ZX Premium smartphone but is it any good?

A few months ago Sony announced the new Sony Xperia XZ Premium, the review unit was kindly sent into review from Vodafone.co.uk, many thanks. Phones generally concentrate on one or two areas where they shine, and Sony has always been about the camera, which to tell you the truth, is pretty awesome on the new Xperia XZ Premium.

There are two colours to choose from, which are of a deepsea black, luminous chrome. We were sent the deepsea black coloured phone, and it’s incredibly shiny and sensitive to fingerprints. The XZ is covered in glass, giving the phone a premium finish. The top and bottom parts of the handset are strangely made from plastic, which does ruin the aesthetic somewhat.

Back off the Sony Xperia ZX Premium

There is Gorilla Glass 5 present to give the phone some protection as well. I have no doubt that you would want to get this into some kind of case as quickly as possible. Fingerprints alone will quickly turn this handset into a greasy nightmare. The bezel that surrounds the screen is quite thick too, which I feel is a little unforgiving in this day and age, considering Samsung and Apple are coming out with sleeker looking handsets.

Fingerprints alone will quickly turn this handset into a greasy nightmare. The bezel that surrounds the screen is quite thick too, which I feel is a little unforgiving in this day and age, considering Samsung and Apple are coming out with sleeker looking handsets.

Holding the device I had not a problem, the square shape isn’t enough to put me off. The only problem is the physical size of the handset. There’s no way that even someone with the largest of hands is going to be able to reach to the top of the screen while using the handset with one hand.

The lock/unlock button on the right-hand side of the handset doubles as a fingerprint scanner, which does give the phone a sleek look as there are no physical buttons present. It’s easy to reach too and reacts pretty quickly to your thumb.

The volume rocker is just above and again, looks sleek.

The jack plug for headphones is placed on top, which I love. It means wired headphones can lead away from your pocket nicely if stored upright. The USB-C port has been placed on the bottom in a standard fashion. The whole device has an IP68 rating, which means it’ll survive a dunk in the bath if you’re like me and knock your phone off of the side on a regular basis.

The screen is a selling point too. Coming in at 5.5 inches, with a 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160. However, most of the time you’re going to be seeing a 1080p downscaled version. 4K resolutions only activate once 4K resolutions have been detected in the media you are watching. So this means anything streamed from Amazon Prime, or now Youtube HDR or even something recorded from your video camera.

The reason Sony has opted to do this is that running a 4K resolution on a mobile will destroy battery life very quickly. Downscaling the resolution ensures the battery life will continue to be spent over the course of a day rather than a few hours.

Even still, because of the Triluminos screen and 807ppi, colours still looked pretty amazing.

The specifications are pretty standard for a flagship handset. Inside is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, paired with 4GB RAM. There’s even 64GB storage that’s available as standard, no other sizes though. It’s a decent size but this phone advertises its 4K screen pretty heavily. If you’re going to be storing a lot of 4K content, then be prepared to have to invest in an extra microSD card. It supports cards up to 256GB.

After running a Geekbench 4 session we can give it a final score of 1918 on a single-core processor and 6470 on a multi-core processor.

The performance was as expected. Launching graphically heavy apps were a smooth quick process and didn’t give any issues in things like dropped frames or even stutter.

The Android 7.1 version that comes with the handset is only littered with minimal Sony bloatware and didn’t really get in the way of my overall experience.

Camera

The Xperia XZ Premium’s rear camera is excellent. with a 19-megapixel snapper with an aperture of f/2.0, “predictive” phase detect and laser autofocus for quick lock-on in both well-lit and low-light conditions. The sensor is 1/2.3in in size, too, so the same as all its major rivals. As for the front-facing camera, that’s a 13-megapixel, f/2.0 camera with a 1/3in sensor.

The main feature that Sony seems to be used to draw people in is its slow-motion capture. One notable change is the increase in frames per second during the slow-motion action shots.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVZwWD4LOWI&feature=youtu.be

Usually, phones increase their rate to 240-frames per second, but Sony gives you a seriously impressive 920-frames per second. That means this phone is able to capture so much more detail and quality in its slow-motion shots. Pair this with the colourisation and impressive sharpness, and you’ve got yourself a blinding shot.

However, the way you capture a slow-motion shot is extremely fiddly and could be enough to put some people off. To activate slow motion you first have to be recording a standard video. From here you need to click the dedicated slow motion button to activate the feature.

The Good
  • Specification matches top tier mobiles
  • Graphically heavy and demanding apps launch with ease
The Bad
  • The design looks a little dated now
  • Slow motion camera mode is fiddly to capture a good shot

The Sony XZ Premium is a very solid phone. My only issues with the device issue are the design. There’s nothing really wrong with the handset’s specification at all and definitely sits on par with other flagship devices in terms of speed, camera quality and even screen resolutions. It just looks very dull compared to other handsets on the market. But for those wanting a phone that looks very business ready, then this is the handset for you. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is available through Vodafone for as little as £46 a month.
