Review: Destiny 2 – Forsaken

After being genuinely hopeful and excited for all the changes made in the base game of Destiny 2 on its release, it soon became a case of same old Bungie when it came to the lacklustre DLC content expansions in Curse of Osiris and Warmind, although I really enjoyed Warmind it did feel as though Destiny 2 had reached its peak way before its first year was up. Bungie have been very vocal about taking player feedback and making changes to the core of Destiny 2 in order to bring people back and with the start of the second year of Destiny 2 content now launched with Forsaken, it is very obvious to me that Bungie are focused on looking ahead, and if this content is any indication, the road could be very bright indeed.

This review is really going to focus on the Forsaken campaign as well as the changes to the game that have been made along with it including the new PvP/PvE mode Gambit. The new Raid does not go live till next week but I have spent the best part of 48 hours playing through the campaign and post campaign content enough to get a really good feel of how Destiny 2 is going to be going forward so I will be focusing on that rather than waiting for the launch of the new Raid as personally, Raids are not the reason I play Destiny 2.

There is a massive shift in tone for Forsaken and as all the trailers have already revealed over the last few months, the big impact this content will have is that it kills off possibly the most loved character in Destiny since the original game released, that of Cayde-6. Forsaken starts with Cayde-6 beaten down and about to be killed by the returning character of Prince Uldren just before the cutscene switches to the events leading to this moment with player as their chosen Guardian accompanying Cayde-6 to the Prison of Elders after receiving a distress call to say that a riot has started in the prison and the player must assist Cayde-6 in restoring order.

I really enjoyed the major shift in tone for this campaign story, it has enough weight to it that just by playing through it you appreciate the feeling at all times that this is a game changing moment narratively for the Destiny universe and its something that expansions and new content should do with Destiny which is why the first expansions for Destiny 2 failed to hit the mark for me. They felt like side activities where what I wanted was something to drive the main story forward. Sadly the price for this meant the best written character since the fist game was killed off, but the impact of it is what drives Forsaken forward in a positive way all the same.

Now the first elephant in the room that must be commented on is the fact that the original voice actor for Cayde-6, Nathan Fillion, did not return to voice him for this expansion. Why that is the case is still not fully known, we know that Forsaken and the idea to kill of Cayde-6 was two years in the making from developer interviews at Bungie, so why or how they failed to have Fillion return is just baffling. Instead Nolan North who also replaced Peter Dinklage as the voice of Ghost, takes the role and as good as North is, his attempt to imitate Fillion in the delivery of the dialogue and his mannerisms for Cayde-6 are glaringly out of place for me. The performance is not terrible but when you hear him doing his best ‘Nathan Fillion doing Cayde-6’ impression throughout the first hour of the story campaign, it sticks out and for me took me out of the story a little too much the first time I ran one of my guardians through the opening missions. It is disappointing that the original voice actor who made the character so iconic couldn’t come full circle at the end but as a character, the loss of Cayde-6 is going to be something fans will not forget.

Right away that loss has changed the relationship between the remaining head Guardians in Zavala and Ikora in how they respond to the murder of Cayde-6 at the hands of Prince Uldren and his new entourage of the Skorn Barons. Ikora is angry and thirsty for revenge and wants to send the Guardians to the Reef to take down Uldren and his Barons but is shocked when Zavala refuses by saying that the Guardians are not an army to be sent out for vengeance, and their job is to remain on Earth to protect it and the system as well as The Traveller. What happens next was a big surprise and I will not spoil how it happens because it was a genuine goosebump moment for me, but you as your Guardian take it upon yourself to go and hunt down Uldren with one single purpose in mind, to kill him for murdering Cayde. This is a rather dark motive whilst understandable, puts you at odds with Zavala for the very first time who will not sanction your actions but gets the understanding and motivation from Ikora to get revenge for her friend. This is the kind of relationship change I feel was needed to refresh the current Destiny universe going forward, and adding that little moral grey area when it comes to wielding the power of a Guardian and deciding how best to use it.

Campaign will then see the player head to the newest region for Destiny 2 in The Reef’s Tangled Shores where you will need to hunt down the eight Barons protecting Uldren and who are also responsible for taken Cayde-6 down. Each will require a certain power level increase for the player and with the new power limit raised to 600 and player level of 50, there is certainly room to quickly level up in order to meet this new challenge but will come to the changes in power levels a little further on. This is a campaign that will take a good few hours to complete which is a good thing compared to previous DLC which was over far too quickly. The need to increase your power levels does give it a false pace as you spend time levelling up but it is all very much worth it by the end of the campaign which happily leaves plenty of room for more story over the next year for Destiny 2.

This has been by far my favourite expansion story yet for Destiny 2 and again is another example of Bungie looking back to locations and characters from the original game now able to return to make the world of Destiny feel even bigger by revisiting locations left behind when Destiny 2 launched. The post campaign content is massive and filled with plenty of things to do including a rather moving tribute to Cayde-6 which rewards you with the Ace of Spades, Cayde-6’s very own hand cannon and a very formidable weapon indeed. But of course, as with all Destiny expansions, the story campaign is just the appetiser for what is perhaps the biggest change to the game since it launched this time last year in 2017.

So much has changed with Forsaken that is it is very obvious where Bungie felt those changes were desperately needed to both refresh gameplay but to also try and resolve so many of the complaints that has plagued Destiny 2 far sooner than it had for the original game. The weapon system has been completely revamped with weapons types previously locked away under the Kinetic, Energy and Power class of weapons brought in with Destiny 2 now far more open with many being reclassed back to how they were in Destiny 1. Shotguns and Sniper rifles are no longer locked away as Power weapons and instead can now be equipped under kinetic or energy allowing for more freedom in weapon choice and loadouts making sniper rifles especially far more viable for players. It is by far yet another instance of Bungie reverting back to how things were in the original Destiny and something players and myself have hoped for to be implemented.

The surprise came in the way players upgrade or infuse weapons and armour now with Forsaken’s changes and this was a strange change which is going to take some getting used to. Players can still game powerful weapons or armour and use Legendary shards and glimmer to infuse their favourite items to increase their power levels but now, and just like in Destiny 1, you will require certain materials from each of the world hubs in order to complete the levelling up. Previous picking up items such as Akane Dust on Titan was almost pointless for how you used it before Forsaken, but now such planetary materials are required in large numbers to infuse things making it a must for players to return to the hub worlds in order to farm these materials which has slowed down the infusion process especially when some of the high power infusion upgrades require Master Work cores which are not so easy to come by.

Bounties are now a huge factor of Destiny once again with daily bounties from just about every person you can speak too offering challenges to complete for rewards. Bounties were a huge reason I enjoyed firing up the first Destiny when playing solo just to go and be in the world for a couple of hours to complete them and it was something I did feel Destiny 2 was lacking but no more, and with the new large amount of room players have to store bounties to complete as you go along for normal gameplay, Crucible and Strike activities, there really is just an abundance of things to keep players going for now until the next content drops later this year with the Annual pass.

Possibly my favourite addition to the Multiplayer side of Destiny for either game has to be the new mode Gambit, something I can quickly becoming especially fond of. Gambit pits two teams of four Guardians against each other and blends the two worlds of PvP and PvE together so effortlessly. At the start of each match the newest character to Destiny, The Drifter, randomly selects which enemy the two teams will fight against. Each team will then be tasked with fighting this enemy to collect shards which must then be deposited in their teams’ ‘tank’ with the aim to deposit enough to summon the Prime Evil taken boss who must be taken down before the other team can defeat theirs. What makes it new and exciting is that both teams are separated but by depositing shards they will send ‘blockers’ to the other team which lowers their tank until they defeat the blocker. Once a team member has deposited ten shards they will then have the opportunity to ‘Invade’ the other team’s location to kill them and disrupt their play and should they be fighting a Primeval Boss, each kill the invader makes gives more health to the boss.

This mode is truly exhilarating and requires solid team work and it is har to decide which is more satisfying, invading another team and taking them all out or cutting off their invader before they can do any damage. This is so much fun from the normal PvP and even when playing with Randoms the action is still just so enjoyable. The Drifter as a character will also play a part in the future as a full content drop will feature his story and the secret he carries with him could be another big change in the Destiny universe.

So far just a couple of days out from Forsaken’s launch I have a far more optimistic outlook for Destiny 2 in its second year than I previously had. The story campaign and post campaign content is compelling and all the changes made to the base game systems are welcome and bring a much needed feeling of connection to the first game compared to the complete overhaul and throwing away many of the things Forsaken has brought back to the game. I still do not like the business model that is linked to the different versions of Destiny 2 in order to get Forsaken such as owning the original DLC before you can use Forsaken and when other gaming publishers are starting to drop the Season Pass, the Annual Pass is still an expensive purchase after Forsaken to keep Destiny 2 up to date without knowing what that pass actually contains.

But the future for Destiny 2 is back on track and as long as Bungie stay committed to responding to player feedback and making the changes required to keep the game fun and relevant for fans, this sequel is finally what I expected it to become even if it has taken a full year for Bungie to learn from its mistakes. Destiny 2’s playing world is huge now and with the two new locations with Tangles Shores bringing back The Reef but also the Dreaming City, the high level region which has its own secrets to discover, I am excited to see what will happen next now that Bungie officially have taken their gloves off.

I will miss Cayde-6, but I will carry his Ace of Spades with pride and will always remember him fondly, as I finally can with Destiny 2.

Review: Planet Alpha

Perhaps the stand out game I played at EGX Rezzed a few months ago was this surprising title from Team 17. The visuals caught my eye immediately as I made my way through the Xbox demo room and I patiently waited for my chance to try the demo and was taken back when a tap on the shoulder revealed I had unknowingly lost 30 minutes to playing the preview. It just grabbed me and I straight away entered into my phone’s calendar its release date with a simple reminder: Planet Alpha, BUY THIS GAME!

Planet Alpha marks the 100th game published by TEAM 17 which is a remarkable thing indeed. As someone who really cut their gaming teeth on the AMIGA, games from TEAM 17 became the foundation of why I fell in love with gaming so now in 2018 to see them still able to blow my mind and refresh that love of gaming says so much about them. Planet Alpha is so very much everything that I have come to expect and enjoy about TEAM 17 and the games they bring out. 25 Years and TEAM 17 still have that magic.

Planet Alpha is one of those very interesting games that simply allows the visuals and the gameplay to bring the player into its world but does so without any spoken dialogue or text on screen to provide any narrative to what or why things are happening to the player. It allows players to discover and react to the game world itself without any distractions or hand holding and things may not make any sense to begin with, the player will naturally start to pick things up and learn how they can interact with that world with little details that the more observant players will see.

The game starts off with the player discovering themselves on a strange alien planet, waking up in their spacesuit but without a space ship nor weapon. As you slowly take control of this astronaut it is clear that he is injured, slowly walking with a limp as you slowly move him off screen to the right. The first ten minutes are just moving this game in a prologue with the only text being the names of the developers appearing on screen as you slowly move through the screens, taking in the changing environments before the astronaut collapses near some caves that look as though they have been sculptured by some lifeform as they appear to look like human faces. Falling to the ground the last thing the player sees is the last cave suddenly filling with light.

Returning to the game and now the Astronaut has suddenly been healed and is able to run, jump and climb but still not text or spoken dialogue to explain anything, just the natural player instinct to go exploring and as you do the ever-changing environments come to life showing amazing wildlife in the background with some bird like creatures being disturbed by your movement. Planet Alpha is all about the player exploring the world before them to look for clues about where they are, why they are there and what happened to them and like a story, the further you progress the more the game opens up for you.

Visually this is just one beautiful and stunning treats for the eyes with bright vibrant colours and fantastical creatures and locations and complimented by an outstanding musical score which just wraps itself around the player’s senses. The developers clearly understood and wanted players to stop and take everything in around them as they added a wonderful little mechanic which is triggered whenever the player stops moving and the camera will start to pull itself back to reveal more of the world around the Astronaut before zooming back in the moment the player begins to move again. This will happen quite often as the player moves into an area filled with fantastical animals all doing their own thing and the instinct to just stop to take in all in will happen many times as you make your way through the game.

Gameplay wise this very much reminds me of titles such as Limbo, where all you can do is simply traverse through the world, making discoveries and solving the puzzles. There is a lot of trial and error involved as reacting to environmental moments such as platforms collapsing and timing your jumps to reach the next platform can sometimes catch you off guard when the pace of the action picks up resulting in a few cheap deaths before having to try again. The jumping here can be frustrating at times with an almost light than air feel to the jumping which makes precise jumps difficult as you may at times have to rely on the momentum of that section to carry you across such as sliding down a collapsing rock pile to give you the speed needed to make the distance to reach the next platform. Jump too soon and you won’t make it just as jumping too late will make you crash into the platform and die. This issue also happens further into the game as the environmental puzzles become more complicated with precise jumping the only way to navigate it so prepare to die quite a bit but thankfully the checkpoint system is rather kind.

Planet Alpha features no direct combat but this does not mean it lacks enemies who are only interested in killing you. The prologue introduces an evil robot species who crash land on the planet just as the players makes their first big discovery of advanced technology on the planet that appears to have been there for hundreds of years in the ruins of a civilisation now lost. These robots will shoot on sight forcing the player to enter the stealth mode which I found to be a little hit and miss. By crouching you can remain fairly unseen so hiding in the vegetation or behind rocks can block the direct line of sight of enemies however if they do see you either by patrolling and catching the player as they move or just the player making a mistake leading to them being shot. The environment can be used to hide behind but it can also be used to deal with enemy threats such as purposefully getting the attention of a robot guard so they investigate your position and should there be dangerous wildlife there, it may attack the robots and taking them out of your way. It can feel a little finicky to start with but after you do this a few times it becomes more instinctive but sometimes until you can see that solution, constantly being wiped out by enemies is a little disheartening at times.

Planet Alpha is a really wonderful indie title that does borrow mechanics from similar game however it does do its own thing. Mechanics such as the ability to control the day and night cycle of the planet to change the environment such as using it to make plants blossom so they can be used as platforms or places to hide. It can also be used on the alien technology as well to solve puzzles by changing the time on the planet to activate devices. What I will say is that the puzzles are never too taxing, and often just a case of either holding down the left or right trigger till the time of day is correct so can be very simple but this is really to keep the progress and movement through the game fluid and flowing.

I really enjoyed this game and what it offers in gameplay and visual treat which had me stopping just to take in the scenery whilst the almost ethereal musical score just washed over me. Though some sections could be frustrating when precise jumping was called on, the wonder of discovering surprises and secrets kept me hooked. It is very easy to become immersed in this world and the puzzles which never really become difficult, make it an interesting experience enough that when all the factors and elements come together make Planet Alpha a great must have indie title for your collection.

V-Rally 4 drives off for the UK tomorrow

0

Bigben and Kylotonn Racing Games are proud to announce the release of V-Rally 4 with a trailer that presents the different disciplines of the game. Speed, sensations, and spectacle are to be expected!

Each discipline offers a unique and different driving experience. V-Rally 4 also allows racing fans to put their skills to the test and to learn new driving techniques in Rally, Extreme-Khana, V-Rally Cross, Buggy, and Hillclimb.

Faithful to previous V-Rally games, the Career mode takes you on a tour of the world with the objective of becoming the champion in each category. To do so, you’ll have to win races, unlock and purchase new vehicles, improve them, and make choices about the way your career is managed. It’s up to you, for example, to decide if you’ll specialise in one discipline or if you’ll compete in all the categories right from the start. You must also recruit teammates (agents, mechanics, engineers, etc.) who will have an impact on your results.

In total, 22 environments, each offering various tracks, are available (on asphalt, gravel, snow, sand…). And for the 6 Rally environments (Monument Valley, Sequoia Park, Safari, Japan, Siberia, Malaysia) you can create special stages: the road network is made up of hundreds of intersections and the stage generator offers thousands of possibilities by opening or closing intersections. It’s impossible to learn all the tracks by heart, so you’ll have to pay close attention to your co-driver’s notes.
Principal characteristics:
V-Rally Mode: V-Rally’s Career mode represents the heart of the experience.
Quick race: quickly access all the game’s content (vehicles and environments), for all categories. There’s nothing better for training, testing vehicles, and getting used to their particularities.
Multiplayer: online with up to 8 players, or offline split-screen.
22 environments and Stage Generator: numerous pre-generated tracks and the ability to drive created special stages in Rally mode.
Vehicle customisation: in Career mode, a livery editor allows you to completely customise your vehicle and give it the colours you want!
More than 50 cars: Collect legendary historic (Lancia Delta S4, Porsche Carrera SC Safari, Mustang Fastback…) and modern (Ford Focus RS RX, MINI John Cooper Works, Volkswagen Polo R WRC…) cars

The Mate 20 lite is available to purchase from RRP £379 at Carphone Warehouse and Vodafone from today, with EE to follow from October. The device will be available in two striking colours; Black and Sapphire Blue.

Anson Zhang, UK Managing Director, Huawei Consumer Business Group commented: “At Huawei, we are committed to launching devices that disrupt the status quo. Key features of the Mate 20 lite include:

AI-Supported Features:

Armed with a new Kirin 710 SoC and 4GB of RAM, the Mate 20 lite delivers next-gen AI innovation, resulting in a dramatically improved performance, battery life and photography experience that is central to the device.

  • AI Shopping Assistant – When users see something they want to purchase while browsing the web, they simply long-press the image with two fingers, and the AI will identify the item and share a link to where users can buy it on Amazon. Alternatively, users can snap a photo of the item whilst out and about and the AI will bring up the prices online.
  • Enhanced Communication – Ensures a smooth call experience with AI noise cancellation. This integrated function nullifies noisy backgrounds, transforming all calls to high quality conversations. If users lose cellular reception, the Mate 20 lite will put the call on hold instead of dropping it and reconnect once connectivity resumes.
  • Curated Albums – Thanks to AI advancements, the days of manually managing photos are over. The Mate 20 lite comes with an AI Smart Gallery, which uses smart algorithms to automatically sort photos into albums.
  • AI Game Suite – AI optimises gaming performance thanks to dynamic resource allocation, providing smoother switching between 4G and WiFi for the best gaming experience while a smart alert system manages your distractions allowing you to answer calls and game at the same time without breaking your flow.
  • 360 Degree Face Unlock – Unlock your phone at any angle thanks to the Mate 20 lite’s simple, fast and intuitive face unlock feature.

Photography Features – Front Cameras:

  • AI-Powered System – Enhanced 24MP RGB + 2MP Depth front cameras recognise more than 200 different scenarios across eight categories – Blue Sky, Beach, Plant, Night, Stage, Flower, Room and Snow – optimising photos scene-by-scene for flawless shots every time.
  • HDR Pro Support – The front cameras support real-time HDR preview and video recording, producing outstanding clarity with rich, vibrant colours, even in dark environments or on back-lit subjects. The HDR Pro also uses RAW image data to greatly improve the quality of the final output, as well as the speed of the process.
  • 3D Portrait Lighting – The five professional lighting effects (including soft lighting, butterfly lighting and stage lighting), combined with Huawei’s 3D facial modelling, can precisely recognise the five facial zones of a subject and identify which areas need to be enhanced.
  • 3D Qmoji – This fun feature leverages the dual front camera to generate a personalised 3D Qmoji (in GIF or video formats), perfect for animating and expressing yourself to share with friends on social media.

Photography Features – Rear Cameras:

  • Intelligent Shooting Experience – The on-device, AI-powered system has studied more than 100 million images to be able to recognise over 500 scenarios in 22 categories including Portrait, Blue Sky, Snow, Ancient Building, Fireworks, Plant, Cat, Dog, Text, Food, Car and Night. The AI automatically identifies different scenes and adjusts the camera settings accordingly, providing users with the best possible results using the 20MP RGB + 2MP depth enhanced rear cameras.
  • Smart Composition – This feature helps beginner photographers properly frame their shots before pressing the shutter button. With practice, users will be able to pick up basic composition techniques with help from the Mate 20 lite.
  • AI-Enhanced Bokeh – The majority of dual-camera smartphones already on the market have difficulty differentiating the subject from the background, so the resulting background blur effects are improperly rendered. To address this pain point, the Mate 20 lite leverages a dedicated depth camera and specialised AI algorithms to accurately trace the outlines of subjects, creating natural portraits with authentic bokeh.
  • Super Slow Motion – In slow motion mode, users can capture a snippet of action at 480fps, and then play it back 16 times slower.

Ultimate Viewing Experience:

  • Featuring a 6.3-inch 19.5:9 FHD+ (2340×1080) HUAWEI FullView display, the Mate 20 lite boasts a notched design, providing a great field of view for the ultimate mobile entertainment experience.

Preview: The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan

0

The recently announced The Dark Pictures anthology has certainly made at least a few fans of the horror genre happy. It’s rare to get a new horror themed game and the fact that it’s being developed by Supermassive Games makes it even better – the same team that developed the excellent Until Dawn. This time round the team will focus on a group of characters for each of these entries in the horror anthology and the first one titled Man of Medan takes places inside a cursed ship.

Like with Until Dawn, Supermassive Games have managed to get at least one recognisable face in Man of Medan in the form of Shawn Ashmore. Expect the same level of detail found in Until Dawn, when it comes to the characters, if this demo is anything to go by. The focus of the playable build was on two if the main characters called Fliss and Brad. The duo have somehow found themselves being led at gunpoint around the dark corridors of the Medan ship by a French speaking character called Danny, who is looking for his missing friend called Olsen. The game offers no way to resist against Danny as he forces the pair to walk on further ahead, as if they are his personal radiation canaries on the lookout for anything spooky and deadly.

What is clear from the start is just how creepy it feels to play through Man of Medan. If anything, this feels like the true sequel to Until Dawn since it resorts to using similar tricks to ensure that players never feel safe at any point.

Given the dark setting of a rundown ship, it’s handy that most of the objects Fliss (playable character) can interact with are clearly highlighted. It makes it easier than fumbling about in the dark for anything that looks remotely useful.

As with Until Dawn, the sound and camera angles are efficiently used for maximum dread effect. A simple walk down a narrow corridor is made to feel like torture as the camera angle focuses in front of the characters with the odd loud noise most likely making players jump. Supermassive Games have seemingly become so crafty at creating these jump scares that it’s impossible to not get tricked, no matter the fact that they are expThe Dark Pictures:ected from the genre. For most of us, there is no bigger fear that not knowing what lies ahead or just around that dark corner and the narrow corridors and other creepy locations of a derelict ship make for the perfect location.

The button prompts make use of a timer around them showing players how long they have to react that makes it easier to see them since it makes them more visible on-screen. It also seemed like the game is quite forgiving when it comes to pressing the incorrect button or just not being quick enough. On one occasion towards the end, the character was given three opportunities to get away from permanently joining the undead creatures that roam the boat, after the incorrect button was pressed twice. This could be handy if the full game is just as forgiving, given that it makes it easier for more players to keep the characters alive for longer and perhaps get to experience everything that the story has to offer.

Walking around the section of the playable demo build was interesting and it even felt claustrophobic at times, so it will be interesting to see how the rest of the story can build upon this. After all, the demo takes places at least two or three chapters after the start of the story, so it’s difficult not to wonder how it can sustain this level of dread if it all takes place inside the ship.

Although the dialogue between the characters felt clunky and forced at times, it might make sense to have characters talk in such a manner to give it a teen slasher horror movie vibe. Even if it doesn’t feel natural for characters to play jump scares on each other for laughs under such dire circumstances. Oddly enough, a second playthrough of the demo seemed to demonstrate a slightly different relationship between Fliss and Brad. Some of the scripted events seen in the first playthrough were still there, but at other times their interactions seemed more relaxed. It could be that this is a sign of how the superb consequences system that Supermassive Games integrated in Until Dawn will work in Man of Medan. In Man of Medan players can make decisions based on a Moral Compass system that will affect how various events play out. In Until Dawn, some of these choices affected the relationships between characters and their interactions, but they also resulted in deadly outcomes for some of them. Although this small section of Man of Medan only had a few choices to make, one of them was a life or death situation, where the character was made to choose between her own safety and that of another character. The way that the whole sequence played out came off as confusing, but it’s definitely a good example of how quickly the stakes can be raised in this game.

As with Until Dawn, characters can also find information by carefully examining items and in this case it results in finding “secrets” clues. It’s not clear from this demo if finding these will result in the characters getting a better grasp of what is going on inside the ship.

It’s remarkable that Man of Medan managed to make such a positive impression in the short amount of time spent playing the demo. Although the choices presented in this section are fairly simple, it’s still interesting to see that players are offered the choice to mold how the story plays out. If it’s anything like Until Dawn, then these choices could change the way the story plays out further in. However, for now what matters is that Man of Medan is looking like another promising game from the development team who seem very keen at making as many players as possible terrified of what lurks in the dark.
