Quick Thoughts

My initial thoughts when I took the CP30 out of the box was that it was slim, sleek and looked very cool. It is very heavy, but then you would expect that given the material it is made out of!

Look out for the full hands-on review this weekend.

Aleratec Announces CFast to SATA Adapter for HDD Duplicators

Aleratec also announced this week the Aleratec CFast to SATA Adapter that makes three of its most popular hard disk drive duplicators compatible with CFast cards.

gI_76309_350120

CFast cards are small mass storage devices. Designed as the successor to Compact Flash memory cards, they offer faster data transfer. About the size of a matchbook, these solid state drives combine the Compact Flash form factor with SATA technology to provide reliable, removable mass storage for portable devices such as cameras and PDAs.

The Aleratec CFast to SATA Adapter makes it possible, using selected Aleratec hard drive duplicators, to duplicate CFast memory cards or to copy from a CFast card to a SATA hard disk or vice versa.

Aleratec hard drive duplicators are an essential tool for building and upgrading computer systems. The Aleratec CFast to SATA Adapter expands the functionality of these already vital tools.

The Aleratec CFast to SATA Adapter is compatible with the following Aleratec hard disk duplicators:

  • 1:5 HDD Copy Cruiser IDE/SATA (Part 350112)
  • 1:1 HDD PortaCruiser (Part 350108)
  • 1:1 HDD Copy Cruiser Mini USB 3.0 SATA Hard Disk Drive Duplicator (Part 350115)
  • 1:3 HDD Copy Dock Duplicator (Part 350117)

The Aleratec CFast to SATA Adapter 2-Pack is available for shipment now with an Estimated Retail Prices (ERP) of $49.99 and is available from Aleratec’s dedicated resellers and distribution partners.

I got to spend some time at CES with Aleratec, and they discussed this product, along with a number of others with me – more on those soon.

Nintendo Announce the Nintendo Network

0

This week, Nintendo have announced the Nintendo Network for the 3DS and the forthcoming Wii U.

40

This is what Nintendo said during the briefing:

As those of you who have enjoyed playing “Mario Kart 7” that we launched late last year should know, its online competition mode includes the system called “Communities.” Each player can create his or her own online “Community” and decide the rules and conditions of the races to be conducted there, and anyone who enters the designated “Community number,” can join to enjoy the matches there. With that system, the company is offering a new kind of network service, which is different from the network services Nintendo has been offering under the name of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

For “Mario Kart 7,” we have already started using as the name of this new network service…

…“Nintendo Network” Service

The Nintendo Network service is our network platform which will cover the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U.

Unlike Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which has been focused upon specific functionalities and concepts, we are aiming to establish a platform where various services available through the network for our consumers shall be connected via Nintendo Network service so that the company can make comprehensive proposals to consumers.

For example, competitions and communication among users, as well as the sales of digital content, will be covered within the Nintendo Network.

For the digital sales of the content, we are also considering the future possibility of digital distribution of packaged software, which is often referred to as “software download sales.” This concept was built into the design of the Nintendo 3DS, and we already have the necessary infrastructure. We will prepare the same infrastructure for the Wii U. However, we have not decided the concrete timing of when we will start it. The decision must be made by taking into consideration such factors as the relationship with the wholesalers and retailers, and the best way to be embraced by consumers, as well as the environment surrounding the market and consumers, such as the required memory capacity on consumers’ SD memory cards. However, as an option for the future, the significance of this business field will increase.

Also for the Wii U, we are planning to introduce a personal account system compatible with Nintendo Network. With this, for example, the ease of using a video game system when the hardware is shared by multiple family members, which has been a challenge we needed to tackle, shall be improved, and we will also be able to construct and offer the system by combining a variety of different services and content.

This looks like it could be rather interesting – more news when we get it.

BBC News App for Android Tablets

The BBC have released their News App for Android for large tablet devices.

BBCNews_Android_Tablet_App

This is what the BBC posted today:

I’m delighted to announce that BBC News app for Android is now available for large tablet devices. The app is available to download from the Android Market in the UK.
BBC Worldwide will soon be launching an international version of the app for audiences around the world.

This follows the success of the BBC News app for Android smartphones, which has been downloaded more than three million times globally since launching last year

This latest version, developed by our in-house team, gives an optimised experience for larger tablets – on devices running Android’s Honeycomb 3.0 operating system and above. (Smaller 7.1-inch tablets will continue to receive the smartphone app).

It offers a simple way of navigating through the key news sections in both landscape and portrait mode.

You can personalise these to suit your interests; we’ve made it easy to share stories and the app also provides On Demand video within stories, in both 3G and wi-fi.

We’ll be offering the News Channel live in a later release. We’re also working on homescreen widgets.

Growing numbers of people are accessing BBC News on mobiles and tablets. In an average week, the BBC News sites and apps are visited by around 9.7m users worldwide on mobile and tablet devices. That represents about 26% of the total.
The BBC News product development team will be working on further mobile and tablet improvements over the coming year.

Microsoft Bing Charity Campaign Day 5 – Life Cycle

This week, Microsoft’s search engine – Bing – will showcase the work of five small UK charities, enabling each cause to talk about the valuable contribution they are making to the communities they work in.

The final of the five charities to appear on the Bing Homepage (today) is Life Cycle. Life Cycle inspires, educates, equips and connects like-minded people with the knowledge and confidence to make cycling part of their everyday lives, reaping the benefits of physical exercise and using it as a practical means of transport.

Bing Charity Day 5

Additional information about the challenges that these charities seek to tackle are available by clicking on the Bing homepage hotspots. You can also watch in-depth videos with the founders and staff and find out more about each cause, including details of how you can make a donation or help, by visiting www.bing.com/HelpYourBritain.

The five charities featured throughout the week will mark the start of a longer on-going campaign, with Bing handing over its Homepage to a new UK charity on the final Friday of every month. This is where Bing users have the opportunity to nominate a charity that they would like to see featured on the Bing homepage by submitting entries via the Help Your Britain page on Bing.com.

Seagate Increases Dividend, Extends Share Buyback Program

0

Seagate announced an increase to the dividend and an extension of the share buyback program.  Read on for details.

Seagate Technology plc (NASDAQ: STX) today announced an increase in the dividend from $0.18 per share to $0.25 per share, and an extension of the share buyback program by another $1.0 billion.  Here are the important parts of the press release:

Seagate Technology plc Increases Quarterly Cash Dividend by 39% and Announces New Share Repurchase of $1 Billion

CUPERTINO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Seagate Technology plc (“Seagate” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ:STX) today announced that its Board of Directors (the “Board”) has approved an increase to its quarterly cash dividend from $0.18 per share to $0.25 per share, an increase of 39%. The increase is effective with the dividend payable on March 1, 2012 to shareholders of record as of the close of business on February 15, 2012. The payment of any future quarterly dividends will be at the discretion of the Board and will be dependent upon Seagate’s financial position, results of operations, available cash, cash flow, capital requirements and other factors deemed relevant by the Board.

Additionally, the Board has authorized the Company to repurchase an additional $1 billion of its outstanding common shares (the “January 2012 authorization”). The January 2012 authorization extends Seagate’s commitment to enhancing shareholder value by utilizing the robust cash generation ability of its business. To date, Seagate has utilized approximately $1.1 billion against the existing $2 billion share repurchase authorization approved by the Board on November 29, 2010 to repurchase 67.8 million shares. The remaining balance of the November 2010 authorization ($0.9 billion) is expected to be utilized by the end of fiscal year 2012 (June 29, 2012), market and other economic conditions permitting.

“These actions by the Board demonstrate our ongoing commitment to maximize shareholder value,” said Steve Luczo, Seagate chairman, president and CEO. “The Board and the management team remain confident in the company’s ability to maintain a strong balance sheet and sustain exceptional cash generation from the business.”

Seagate expects to fund the dividend and share repurchases through a combination of cash on hand, future cash flow from operations and potential alternative sources of financing. Share repurchases under these authorizations may be made through a variety of methods, which may include open market purchases, privately negotiated transactions, block trades, accelerated share repurchase transactions, or by any combination of such methods. The timing and actual number of shares repurchased will depend on a variety of factors including the common share price, corporate and regulatory requirements and other market and economic conditions. The share repurchase authorization may be suspended or discontinued at any time.

On January 4th, Seagate announced preliminary fiscal Q2 2012 results.  Their quarter ended on December 31st, and this was the first report since closing the Samsung acquisition.  Seagate stated

Update to Fiscal Third Quarter 2012 Financial Outlook
The company continues to believe that during calendar 2012 unit demand will exceed supply and combined with the high growth rate in the demand for raw storage, the exabyte shortage will be more pronounced than the unit shortage, and as a result pricing is expected to remain stable.

Seagate sees strong market fundamentals in the hard drive business, no doubt impacted by the hard drive shortage from the Thailand floods.  Increasing the dividend and buying back shares with the extra cash flow should help bolster the share price.

STX closed at $19.80 today, up $0.12, or 0.6%.
