PC gameplay footage from DmC Devil May Cry released

DmC Devil May Cry from Capcom is out tomorrow on the PC, and to keep you going they have released some PC gameplay footage.

ScreenShot0000311_thumb1

In this retelling of Dante’s origin story which is set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC Devil May Cry retains the stylish action, fluid combat and self-assured protagonist that have
defined the iconic series but inject a more brutal and visceral edge.

The Dante of DmC is a young man who has no respect for authority or indeed society in general. Dante knows that he is not human, but also that he is not like the demons that have
tormented him throughout his life. Caught between worlds, he feels like an outcast.

Thanks to his twin brother Vergil, leader of the anti-establishment group called “The Order”, Dante is now discovering and coming to terms with what it means to be the child of a demon
and an angel. This split personality has a real impact on gameplay with Dante being able to call upon angel and demon abilities at will, transforming his Rebellion sword on the fly to
dramatically affect both combat and movement.

Here is some footage from the PC version which is released tomorrow:

Nokia has now opened up their Drive+ Beta navigation program to all Windows Phone 8 devices. Read on for details.

drive_thumb_2EE49B70

Nokia has now opened up their Drive+ Beta navigation program to all Windows Phone 8 devices. Up until now, this navigation app was limited to Nokia handsets only; now all Windows Phone 8 handsets will be able to run this app. This last weekend, my family took a road trip to Chicago; we ran this app on my daughter’s Lumia 822 on the way back from Chicago. It performed admirably, essentially as fast as the on-board navigation system in my Jeep, and with the added speed limit data, my daughter was able to gently remind me of the speed limits on the roads that we travelled. Now owners of other Windows Phone 8 handsets will have the opportunity to run this one! Here is the blog post from Microsoft:

Nokia’s turn-by-turn app Drive+ Beta is now available on more Windows Phones

Starting today, Microsoft and Nokia are making the beta of Nokia Drive+, the company’s turn-by-turn navigation app, available for free to all Windows Phone 8 customers in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. Download it from the Windows Phone Store.

The app remains in beta as the team fine tunes the customer experience. In the meantime, you can access full turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation, offline maps, speed limit warnings, and conveniences such as day and night modes. With today’s release, the team is looking forward to hearing from even more Windows Phone customers through the app’s “feedback” tab, to help make it even better. Give it a try and let them know what you think. Learn more about Nokia Drive+ Beta .

If you are running an HTC or other Window 8 device and are in the US, UK or Canada, go ahead and add this to your phone!

“This deal adds experienced developers to our internal creative teams at a key moment in the cycle of the video game industry,” said Yannis Mallat, president of Ubisoft Montreal.

THQ Montreal

In addition to the team at THQ Montreal, Ubisoft also acquired a new, yet-to-be announced IP in development at the studio. THQ Montreal will join Ubisoft’s development teams, already the second-largest in-house development staff in the world with 26 studios in 19 countries and more than 6,250 people dedicated to video game production.

South Park: The Stick of Truth

South Park: The Stick of Truth is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, and is scheduled for release in calendar 2013.

This acquisition has no material impact on Ubisoft’s current fiscal year (2012/13).

SkyDrive app for Windows 8 and Windows RT adds live tiles

Microsoft have updated their SkyDrive app for Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Start_thumb_35F091D5

This is what was posted on the blog:

Starting today, the SkyDrive app from the Windows Store will start showing you notifications on the live tile when you add new files to your SkyDrive. Now the tile for the SkyDrive app will be useful for more than just launching the app, by providing at-a-glance info on what’s going on in your SkyDrive. Whenever you add new files to SkyDrive, the app tile shows you relevant details. If you add a document, you’ll see the document name, along with when it was added, and what folder it’s in. If you add photos, the tile gives you a nice view of those photos.

I am a big fan of SkyDrive and use it all the time so I am very happy to see this addition.

Ubisoft Releases Update for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online with New Mode, Map and Clan Matches

Today, Ubisoft announced the release of the 0.10.0 update for its free-to-play PC shooter Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online. This latest game update brings a host of new content, including the Holdout game mode, the Balaklava Sub Pen map and the Clan Match feature, as well as several game service improvements and fixes. The 0.10.0 update coincides with the release of the new Triton Pack featuring naval-themed avatars, weapons and armour.

TRITON_ingame-screenshot3

Holdout Game Mode

The teamwork, tactics, and strategies of players will be tested in the newest game mode for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Online. In the Holdout game mode, both teams will contend over a single capture point set in the middle of the map. Take control of the point, and defend it until the round ends to emerge victorious. With shorter round timers, and both teams converging on a single capture point, players can expect fierce and frantic firefights in Holdout.

Balaklava Sub Pen Map

Designed specifically for the new Holdout mode, the Balaklava Sub Pen map is inspired by the formerly classified, underground submarine facility in Ukraine that was operational until 1993.

Symmetrical and compact in design, with only one capture point, the map gives players of all skill levels plenty of opportunities to jump into the fight and start having fun right away. The map offers a lot of depth with multiple strategic areas and approaches to the capture point – whether it be the folding bridge that offers an elevated vantage point, or the tunnel entrances that provide flanking opportunities.

TRITON_ingame-screenshot2

Triton Pack

Complementing the naval theme of the new map is the new Triton Pack. Players will be able to outfit their Ghosts in brand-new helmets and armor vests, equip them with upgraded weapons, and personalize their profile with custom avatars. The Triton Pack will only be available for a limited time throughout the month of January.

Clan Matches

Following up from the introduction of the Clan feature in October 2012, which gave players the opportunity to create and join clans, players will now be able set up custom matches against other clans.

Form a squad from your own clan mates, pick a map of your choice, and send out a challenge to your rival clans – it’s time for all the GRO clans to show off their skills and find out who is the best.

TRITON_ingame-screenshot1

According to Theo Sanders, the game’s Producer:

We’re really excited about the 0.10.0 update. The Holdout mode and the Balaklava Sub Pen map offer new tactical challenges and experiences to the community, and decking out your Ghost in the new Triton gear makes them look awesome.

We’re also keeping our promise to the community with the introduction of the Clan Match feature. Fighting alongside your clan mates and friends, challenging another clan; social competition is such an integral part of the GRO experience, and this feature goes a long way towards fueling this experience.

Exclusive Dead Space 3 Q&A with John Calhoun

1

We have an exclusive Q&A with Dead Space 3 Associate Producer John Calhoun.

DS3_EAx360PFTltd_front01_thumb1_thum

Dead Space 3 cuts to the heart of deep space terror with award-winning suspense, horror, action and sound. Slated for release in the dead of winter, players will embark on a thrilling ride through space that takes them to a hostile new planet, Tau Volantis. There, they must battle violent, subzero conditions and deadly, highly-evolved enemies including new Necromorphs, gigantic boss creatures and – for the first time in the series – a faction of Unitologist soldiers on a misguided mission.

Over to John:

1. How will Dead Space 3 attract new visitors to the franchise? Is pre-play of 1 & 2 a pre-requisite and if not, how do you ensure they’re suitably informed?

The most important thing we can do to attract new players is to make a kick-ass, high-quality game! More than anything else, gamers want fun and thrills; when we deliver on that expectation, people are going to check us out. But we hope Dead Space 3 will also attract new players with the game’s optional drop-in, drop-out co-op experience. For long-time fans, it’s an entirely new way to play Dead Space. And for people who may have found previous Dead Space games too scary or challenging to play alone, it gives them the option to take down the terror with a friend.

Playing the previous Dead Space games is not a pre-requisite to enjoying Dead Space 3. Obviously, veterans will be able to rely on their strategic dismemberment skills and knowledge from past games. But new players will be able to jump into the action with a slick “Previously On” video, and a spine-tingling tutorial level will ensure they know the basics before the action gets too intense.

2. During the past two titles Isaac faced his foes alone, and that was a major factor in setting the mood and atmosphere. How will you balance the original game’s deep sense of abandonment with the camaraderie of additional characters in Dead Space 3?

We’ve always had additional characters in Dead Space games; in fact, knowing that other people are relying on you to survive (or vice-a-versa) is part of what makes our atmosphere unique. The addition of optional co-op to Dead Space 3 hasn’t changed this. If you choose to play in single-player, Isaac Clarke is still on his own. He’s isolated from his squad and has to rely on his engineering skills and wits to survive. There aren’t any AI followers to back him up in a fight, or NPCs that you’ll have to escort through a level. As in previous Dead Space games, you’ll be facing the Necromorphs alone. It’s only when you choose to play in co-op that Isaac is joined by John Carver, a trained soldier with a troubled past. The dialogue and some of the cut-scenes between Isaac and Carver are unique to co-op, making the two experiences pretty different.

3. The schizophrenic-like symptoms caused by the Markers have always been a staple of the Dead Space franchise. How will the dementia affect the main characters of Dead Space 3? Will the gameplay undergo variations? If so, to what extent?

This question is venturing into spoiler territory, so I don’t want to give away too much. If you’ve finished Dead Space 2, you’ll know that Isaac is more or less freed from his Marker-induced dementia. But he continues to carry the Marker signals in his brain, and has the unique ability to understand the Marker’s language. How this plays out in Dead Space 3 is a secret that you’ll have to experience for yourself.

But just because Isaac can fight through the Marker dementia, it doesn’t mean that everyone else is immune. John Carver, for example, sometimes struggles to understand what’s real and what’s not. The way this plays out in co-op is subtle, and we hope players will sometimes question if what they’re seeing is real, or if they’re even seeing the same things at all.

4. How is the co-op going to affect the narrative of the main story? Are the players going to lose something (in terms of story progression, exclusive items etc.) if they decide to play on their own?

Co-op is optional, and fully drop-in, drop-out. This means that the game is designed to keep the story moving along with or without the presence of a second character. The main narrative arc, which is about exploring the frozen plains of Tau Volantis for the key to stopping the Markers, is the same in both styles of play. In single-player, the dialogue and some cutscenes change to focus solely on Isaac – making it clear that it’s up to him, and him alone, to accomplish this goal. In co-op, the dialogue changes to accommodate John Carver, and you’ll learn more about his own personal reasons for wanting to stop the Markers. Nobody will miss out on the main beats of the story, although the tone and content are different enough that we hope fans will try out the game both ways. (And let us know which was your favorite!)

5. Isaac’s voice was often heard on Dead Space 2, in comparison to Dead Space 1. Is this something we should expect to see in Dead Space 3 as well, and if yes, why?

Absolutely! Giving Isaac a voice and relatable personality were big goals in Dead Space 2, and we’re pushing this even further in Dead Space 3 with a more sophisticated animation and cinematic engine. Isaac doesn’t just emote vocally – you’ll see anguish and relief in his facial expressions, eye movements, and body language. Having a more expressive character is a big part of bridging the gap between what the player sees on the screen, and what he experiences in his mind. We try to make sure Isaac only speaks when we think players would have something to say, or have other characters talk to him only when players might have a question that needs to be answered. It’s all part of creating a high-quality, immersive experience.

6. Tell us more about oxygen supply in vacuum areas. It seems that it is a strong survival horror element – will it dramatically affect the gameplay by challenging the player?

The airless environments are foremost about creating a “real space” vibe to the game; it’s not just about creating an element of survival (although it does that, too). Mostly, it’s about letting players experience what it would be like to be in the real vacuum of space. So you hear your heartbeat and breathing more. The ambient audio is muffled, to mimic the experience of sounds being transmitted via vibrations in your suit. Light from the sun is brighter in vacuum areas due to the lack of atmosphere. The gameplay challenge isn’t too significant, but you will have to be mindful to scavenge for O2 tanks whenever your oxygen supply starts to run low.

7. With Dead Space 1 & 2 there were tie-in games, comics, and an anime to become further immerse in the DS universe. Can we expect something similar this time around?

Dead Space 3’s launch is accompanied by a graphic novel, “Dead Space Liberation,” that focuses on John Carver’s backstory. You’ll learn how he came to get mixed up with the Markers and Necromorphs, and why he’s on a mission to destroy them forever. There’s also a new book out, “Dead Space Catalyst,” that dives deep into the overall Dead Space lore that we’ve teased over the past few games.

8. What was the reason behind adding the Kinect functionality? Will it use movement controls or is it solely voice-control? Can you give us some examples of voice commands?

Dead Space 3 supports voice commands via the Kinect. In fact, we’re the first game ever to feature co-op exclusive voice commands! This means you can find your partner, share ammo, or request help just by shouting at your screen. There are also a bunch of commands for all styles of play, such as the ability to browse your RIG’s interface, reload weapons, fire stasis, and more. We added Kinect functionality because we truly think it adds to the Dead Space experience. If your veteran player, you’ll appreciate the ability to navigate straight to your objective screen, or instantly share a pick-up with your friend.

9. Do you feel that the scepticism of Dead Space fans towards DS 3 is justified?

Dead Space 3 is a big game with a lot of new features, but it’s still a Dead Space game through and through. It’s made by the same team that made Dead Space 1 and 2, and believe me when I say WE’RE the franchise’s biggest fans. We not only want Dead Space 3 to maintain the integrity and atmosphere that the franchise is known for, but we’re also in a position to ensure that this happens.

The scepticism comes from the fact that we want to show off all the new stuff, but we have to do it in 1 and 2 minute videos or gameplay segments that aren’t representative of the whole game. If we release a trailer that shows 30 seconds of action, it doesn’t mean that Dead Space 3 is entirely an action game. Similarly, we’re proud of co-op and want to demo it whenever we can – but people then forget that the entire game can be played in single-player, with no AI followers. Dead Space 3 is long, epic, intense, and atmospheric. It can’t be conveyed in a YouTube clip. My advice to fans is to play the game when it launches, or download the demo, and judge for yourself. You’ll see that this is the best Dead Space game yet.

10. Are we likely to see Dead Space continue as a series of games?

Right now, we’re just focused on making Dead Space 3 as polished and high quality as possible. We’ll only think about the future once that job is finished!

Check out Lets Play the Dead Space 3 demo on Xbox 360

With an all-new ice planet, drop-in/drop-out co-op, and exhilarating action, Dead Space 3 will re-set the bar for epic thrills in February 2013.

Hail to the Whale!

Element: WATER

Character Type: Giant

Bio: Thumpback was once a crew member of The Phantom Tide, the most fearsome pirate ship in all of Skylands. But the actual pirating part about being a pirate didn’t interest Thumpback so much as the benefits that came with travelling on a large ship. After all, his real passion was fishing. But when his chance came to finally ensnare the most elusive creature in the sky – the Leviathan Cloud Crab – he was pulled over board and carried off into the horizon. This was actually quite fortunate, because sometime later The Phantom Tide and its entire crew were banished to the Chest of Exile. Thumpback’s pirating days were over, but his legend as one of the first Skylanders had only just begun.

I’ve got my eye on you!

Element: UNDEAD

Character Type: Giant

Bio: Throughout history, there have been many epic battles, though none more bizarre than the legendary brawl between the headless giant and the infamous flying eyeball. It all started with a staring contest, but with the headless giant having no eyes and the flying eyeball unable to blink, it soon escalated into an all out war as the two rivals fought fiercely throughout the land of the undead for over a hundred years! With neither opponent backing down, the two combatants were eventually struck with the realisation that if they were to combine their formidable powers, they would be a force to be reckoned with. By teaming up, the infamous flying eyeball and the headless giant became known as Eye-Brawl – one of the most powerful Skylanders ever known!

On the other end of the scale is world’s Smallest Arcade Machine that stands at just 124 x 52 x 60 mm (4.88 x 2.05 x 2.36 in). The ultimate geek’s toy has been created by 30-year-old Mark Slevinsky. The Computer Engineer from Alberta, Canada, took 6 months to design and build the fully playable device. The next challenge for Mark is fatherhood – “My wife and I are expecting our first child (a son) any day now – he’ll be the right size to play the arcade machine!”
21-year-old Will Johnson from Arkansas, USA, has gone one step further and turned his passion into a hugely lucrative career. Will, known on the gaming circuit as “BigTymer”, has become the Highest-Earning Call of Duty Player. Between 2009 and 2012 the First Person Shooter Pro made $135,000 (£83,000) from winning four different Call of Duty titles on the Major League Gaming Pro Circuit. Will says that “it’s perfect to have solid proof that I am the best in the world at a craft I’ve spent years working on”. However, despite his fame and fortune the American admits that he may have to cut down the amount he plays games or risk his girlfriend “hating” him!”
British talent is also recognised in the videogames almanac. 15-year-old Jacob Gaby from Bushey, this year achieved the Highest Margin of Victory on FIFA. Soccer-mad Jacob was challenged by his brother to see how many goals he could score against the computer. By half-time he had scored over 100 goals, and by the full-time whistle he had set a new record winning 189–0 playing as Barcelona FC against Fulham FC. Jacob, who spends around 7 hours a week playing FIFA, says: “It’s incredible to have the record, but I can’t let it go to my head – I’ve got my school exams coming up!”
Welshman Jann Mardenborough is another to be recognised. Aged 19 he became the Youngest GT Academy Winner. He won the initiative set up by Nissan and PlayStation to bring together the best gamers and give them a chance to drive a professional racing car. Jann has since got his international racing licence and drives for Nissan in the Blancpain Endurance Series.
Other incredible feats recognised in the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition this year include Canada’s Chris Gloyd and Timothy Bell who achieved the Longest Gaming Marathon. The pair lasted an eye-watering 120 hours and 7 minutes on the Resistance series.
85-year-old John Bates from Wisconsin, USA, proves that age is no factor in gaming as he is recorded as having achieved over 14,000 perfect games on Wii Sports Bowling, making him the Oldest Gaming Record Holder.
Guinness World Records™ Reveal Extraordinary New Gaming Feats in Guinness World Records 2013 Gamer’s Edition
LONDON (10/01/2013). Guinness World Records, the global authority on record-breaking achievement, reveal the latest and greatest gaming achievements in the new Guinness World Records 2013 Gamer’s Edition out today. Incredible new feats recognised in the best-selling videogame series include the Largest Collection of Videogame Memorabilia; Highest Margin of Victory against the Computer on FIFA; Highest Earning Call of Duty Player; and the Smallest Arcade Machine.
31-year-old Brett Martin from Colorado, USA, is recognised in the new Guinness World Records 2013 Gamer’s Edition for having the world’s Largest Collection of Videogame Memorabilia, with 8,030 items of merchandise. Brett, a web designer, was given his first item (a Mario figurine) by his parents when he was just 8 years-old; however he only started collecting 12 years ago when he “discovered eBay”. In that period he has amassed a collection worth in excess of $100k. Brett, who is married with children, says: “Many of my friends know I’m a gamer, but I guess after this they’ll realise just how passionate and obsessed I am!”

Interesting trivia also comes thick and fast in the new book too. South Korea makes it into the book for being the First Country to Ban In-Game Sales. In the summer of 2012 South Korea made virtual item sales illegal. The fine for breaking this new law was set at 50 million South Korean won (£28,000).
InnoGames announce Kartuga closed beta to start in February

0

InnoGames has today revealed that the closed beta for hotly-anticipated pirate action game Kartuga will begin in February.

empire_large

When the beta launches next month, pre-registered players will have the opportunity to be among the first to conquer the world from their browser, in this jaw-dropping Unity 3D multiplayer adventure.

Kartuga is a brilliant new browser-based MMO which puts players in charge of one of three fully customisable classes of ship. The game’s core offering is simple: to deliver an ocean full of promise, adventure and potential riches – and tense, nail-biting sea-battles.

Co-operative PvP is very much the focus, with an open world for cool downs and exploring beautiful kingdoms in between battles. Each ship can be customised to suit a particular playing style – with players gaining skill points by levelling up.

And what worlds they are: with Ithosia, Kartu and the Empire of the Sun all available for plundering, players have a wonderful world to explore. And with various sectors within each world offering PvP missions or PvE quests, there’s always an adventure just over the horizon.

“So far, already 50,000 players pre-registered for the game and we cannot wait to show it to them”, says InnoGames spokesman Dennis Heinert. “The game adds new perspectives to the pirate genre. The setting does not have anything to do with clichéd Caribbean parrots, but will lead the players to three distinct areas. This is all free to play and massively multiplayer in a persistent world.”

Players have a few more days to sign up to the closed beta by heading over to www.kartuga.com.

More news on Kartuga will be revealed soon.
